year 03 | point of entry
as a point of entry, we were tasked to define the relationships within the urban context of Manchester, in particular the areas surrounding Moss Side, Hulme, Oxford Road Corridor. and the Manchester Science Park. spliting up into smaller groups within the atelier, we analysed the urban context in five separate topics, each identifying how the built environment has been shaped through time. the relationship with the Contact Theatre were important in addressing the effectiveness of the site.

noise pollution is a constant factor within our livelihoods, especially in the centre of major cities. manchester is not exception, and with oxford road being one of the busiest routes in europe, noise pollution in the area can be relatively high. sound drives an important role in the quality of living within a city, can effect daily livelihoods and may contribute to a city being unattractive for people to move to. during the day, sound varies from people to traffic, and during quiet hours and rush hour.

the site is located on oxford road, one of the busiest roads in manchester. just south of the university of manchester, it is within a student area, and adjacent to the contact theatre, manchester academy and a row of shops and restaurants. the two streets on opposite sides of oxford road connect the suburban areas to the city centre, notably hulme and moss side.
SOUND INTEGRATION “A SOUND ORIENTATED SITE”
RELATIONSHIP OF SURROUNDING CONTEXT
the proximity of the contact theatre, manchester academy, and oxford road allow the site to be connected to the elements of performance and arts. with such sound orientated elements, a programme can formulate, whereby announcing the area as a performinance and arts territory. the connection to the shops and bars can be made in allowing access from both sides, interacting with the site and opening up the negative spaces that exist currently.

TERRAIN | VISIONARY MOULDING LANDSCAPES
by extracting the flat surfaces within the site, interesting topographies can be achieved to channel sound and vision. the fluctuated landscape becomes a part of the programme, whereby dissipiating sound, or essentially allowing sound to channel into the site. by creating mounds closer or afar from the roads, it creates a higher vantage point, and the negative space becomes natural landscaping that could engage with the programme of the site.

POINTS OF ENTRY
upon analysing both sites in terms of secluded areas and proximity, I have opted to use site 01, which is just in front of the contact theare and set back from oxford road. the relationship to oxford road is an interesting element to consider, and how contact theatre can be brought into context from its often ignorance from existence. by using this site, sound will be a factor of consideration, the placement of entities will become a major factor in how the building would funcion in a noise orientated area.

EXPLORATION TERRAIN TESTING MODEL
the diagrammatic model experiments with variable terrains available from the given control points. the negative space taken from the landscaping becomes replaced by a roof, in which the building itself will lie.

adjustments in design
examining the design I had come to in 3.1, some spaces within the site and the proposed building were slightly larger than usual. the interaction between the building and the site context is an important aspect in the scheme. to address this, I went back and analysed the fundamentals in how I wanted the site to interact. the site being an area of sound and performance, with the relationship to the contact theatre being one of the key points to radicate. floor space and utIlisation was important in designing a building for the programme, and not for the site given.

exploded axo & construction sequence GRIDSHELL the structure consists of a timber frame fixed with a glulam gridshell structure that supports the roof, lending it capable of bearing loads for access. lateral timber beams hold the double glazed panels in place at each level, providing sturdiness to the facade and ensuring the building is air tight. the use of timber across the entire building gives it a fliud and free forming look, as well as look minimal and elegant. the building is also designed to be easily disassembled, moreover the use of timber pays an important role. the single slab foundation holds the building in place, no permanent part of the building is fixed to the ground, leaving it to be extremely portable if in needed of moving or renovation works.

the cut section shown displays the triple storey height of the building, consistenting mainly of two materials, timber and glass. these materials give the building a lightweight and minimalistic feeling, with some intensive reinforcement and detailing with the timber frames to ensure stability and comfort. the highlighted regions in grey shows the below ground elements.

IN-FRAME DETAIL
this zoomed in section shows the layers and fixings on the roof structure. the glazing sits into place through the glulam gridshell roof, fixed with screws and bolts. the glazing is further fastened by EPDM glazing tape and softwood.

these interior perspectives are taken from the top floor, looking down onto the triple storey atrium space and the exposed timber gridshell. the music recording studios are located on this floor. there is also a vantage towards the outdoor perfomance space from this level.
