ACTES SUD

The idea for Olga Sedakova’s first work came about as the author explains: “We’d spend our summer vacations in the country, and every morning my niece Dacha would come and wake me up. Some days before we had celebrated her fifth birthday with a homemade shadow puppet show portraying The Story of Caliph Stork by W. Hauff, which deals with the theme of metamorphosis. To put off the horrible getting-out-of-bed moment, I’d mumble to her, but in my sleepy state, I generally had no idea what I was saying. One morning, I launched into the story of Olia, and when I finally woke up, Dacha asked me to write it down.” Gabriella Giandelli provides a series of moving illustrations to illustrate this book of extraordinary metamorphoses. 5 years + - 32 pages – 23.5 x 25.5 cm – hardback – ¤15

As well as exploring the myth and its associations, the work goes one step further: kids use a poem about a chimera to find the creature’s characteristics before drawing their own version on the opposite page. To help children, there is a sheet of body parts – heads, torsos, legs, tails and wings – for selection and assembly so as to create totally new chimeras. The body parts are based on ancient engravings and give the new creatures, whether octo-rhinos, ele-potami or giraff-a-doodles, a naturalist dimension. A unique activity book that is also beautiful, creative and smart!

MERYPTAH AND THE MYSTERY OF THE TOMB OF TUTANKHAMEN Author: Aude Gros de Beler The pharaoh Tutankhamen is not long dead and has been laid to rest in the Valley of the Kings; his tomb, it is said, contains unimaginable riches. Two sons of tomb decorators, Meryptah and Nakht, live in a village to the west of Thebes. One evening when playing in the mountains, the two boys hear voices and discover thieves looting the pharaoh’s tomb. Hence in the heart of the forbidden valley, a dangerous adventure for the children begins in their quest to protect Tutankhamen’s sacred treasures. THE SONS OF THE SKY Author: Pascal Vatinel Once upon a time in the Middle Land, there lived a wise and aged emperor. The time comes to decide who will replace him after his death. But how can he possibly choose between his twin sons, Kan and Li? Both are outstanding emperor material but both have such different personalities. So the emperor decides to set them a challenge, and answer this riddle: “how to choose the new emperor?” Kan, the brave hunter, and Li, the great intellect, both set out to prove their superiority. Kan captures a dragon to impress the emperor but exacerbates tensions between the Dragon-folk and Tiger-folk. To restore peace in the Middle Land, the boys have to combine their talents, and in the course of their adventures, they come to understand that only by uniting opposites, can they rule with true wisdom. THE NEW KING OF FRANCE Author: Gilles Abier One fine morning, Adrien announces to his mother and his step-father that he’s to be the new king of France. “No more familiarities, from now on you have to call me Louis.” Dressed in satin pantyhose and wig, he demands that the family obey his orders, even his father-in-law’s kids who are obviously far from impressed by his latest scheme. To try to relax the atmosphere, Adrien’s grandmother suggests they spend the weekend with her old friend, Hubert de la Roselière, who lives in an old manor house, a real one, complete with leaking pipes, icy draughts and endless gardening. Adrien learns that being a king isn’t just about wearing a crown. EXCEPT THAT Author: Anne Vantal Valentin is fond of numbers. On the way to school he checks the exact number of steps it takes to walk to school from the garden gate, then from the first crossroads, then from the bus stop, etc. And with zero deviation, or that would mess up his statistics. Valentin is a “special” boy. But one morning his daily ritual is disturbed by a wallet that he finds on the ground. Being a noble soul Valentin decides to return it to its owner. Thus commences a long journey across town, a brave escapade that brings a beautiful encounter.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, Tallulah will be forced to sit through every show. And to cap it all, everyone envies the life she leads. “You’re living the dream!” they say. There’s no way she’s going spend her summer moping around like that - even if it does mean disobeying her folks, and pulling off the impossible task of finding both Adele and her cat “UhohImintrouble”.

TEEN ADVENTURE NOVELS THE SURPRISING LIFE OF ELLIS SPENCER Author: Justine Augier In the futuristic world of Naol, dream and doubt are prohibited. Results are all that count and all praise the merits of a hyperactive life. All that is except for Ellis Spencer. A puny, shy, and absent-minded child, Ellis is the complete opposite of her two brothers, Allan and Richard, who are real “model” children. The girl causes her parents no end of worry and they send her to the Academy, a special school for problem children. Her new environment gives Ellis the chance to realize she is not alone as an outsider. A fellow student, Peter, who is outspoken in his opposition with the national ideal, attracts her attention and he gradually manages to convince her to become part of a secret resistance network struggling against electronic tagging and a lifetime of enforced labor. At first the clandestine network terrifies Ellis, but soon she understands how it offers her a chance to be herself and engages in its struggle. As he learns to live with the illness, Paul finds precious comfort in Anaïs, his classmate, and Arthur, a child he meets in hospital. Thanks to them, Paul manages to explain his illness to the rest of the school and in the process learns more about it and to accept it.

Impressed by the power and resistance of the dogs he has encountered in the frozen north, he has the crazy idea to use husky-drawn sleds to supply the snow-clad Vosges front. GIRL'S DEPARTMENT Author: Denis Lachaud Tina is secretly in love with Theo Tayeb. She has even started karate lessons so that she can be with him, even if it means the combat sport might stop her behaving like a girl “should do”. By the way Tina wonders why such a behavior isn’t for girls. She also starts asking serious questions about what her parents really do for a living and begins to suspect them of being secret agents. Tina is a girl who asks a lot of questions especially about what she thinks people might be hiding. “Why,” she wonders, “do we always hide what we really think and only say things that we don’t think at all?”

Suddenly something sparks back to life within her and Marie refuses to have her soul sucked out. She’s determined to let no one stands in the way of her dream: to become a hairdresser. THE NEOLITHIC AGE STEP-BY-STEP Author: Anne Augereau Illustrator: Loïc Méhée The Neolithic age was a period of profound change marking a break with prehistory - not for nothing is it also known as the Neolithic Revolution. In France, historians place the period between 5800 and 2500 BC, but it was born two thousand years earlier in the Near East. During this period, our fundamental living patterns radically changed as sedentary lifestyles developed. Hunting and gathering gradually diminished as food sources and instead homo sapiens started raising animals and tilling the land. Gradually, animals were domesticated to become an integral part of home life. Villages began to spring up, bringing major transformations such as early housing and community life, while tools and utensils became more refined. Today, all these inventions form the basis of our civilization.
