WON’T ANYONE GET ANGRY ? Toon Tellegen illustrated by Marc Boutavant Hardcover picture book, 19 x 27 cm, 80 pages, €15
Ages 6 & Up
E
very night the hyrax scolds the sun for setting down; every day the elephant can’t fight the urge of climbing up trees; under the rose bush, the worm’s anger competes with that of the beetle; the door-to-door crayfish brings all sorts of angers to the mouse’s house; in the middle of the woods, the hippopotamus and the rhinoceros run straight into each other but each refuse to budge; and so on. But then one day, anger seems to have disappeared and all the animals are worried… In twelve brilliant, funny and poetic stories, Toon Tellegen develops the whole range of shades of anger to remind us that, far from resembling hatred, this spirited emotion can appease, connect, resolve, and lead to tears of laughter.

FATTYPUFFS AND THINIFERS André Maurois & Vercors Hardcover binding, 225x285mm, 104 pages, €19
All ages
I
n 1930, still traumatised by the First World War in which he took part, André Maurois writes Fattypuffs and Thinifers, a plea for peace and coexistence between people addressed to children. First published in 1984 and translated in more than 10 languages, the book remained out-of-print for several years. Eighty years later, the text retains all the strength and meaningfulness which makes it a classic ripe for rediscovery by today’s children. On a day out in the forest, two brothers, plumb Edmund Double and thin Terry Double, accidentally find the entrance to a long escalator that descends into the Earth and ends on a narrow quay. In this imaginary underground land live the Fattypuffs, fat and congenial epicures, and the Thinifers, thin and irritable work alcoholics. These age old enemies are on the verge of yet another war when the two brothers make their visit. Due to their very distinctive physical difference, Edmund is urged to board the Fattiport ship outbound to Fattyborough, while Terry is embarked on a vessel to Thiniville. They each discover very different landscapes and customs: round and bubbly baroque architecture vs. sharp spires and high buildings, idleness and food profusion vs. abstinence and competitiveness. If not for the friendly intervention of the two brothers, who could have predicted that the obese pleasure-seekers and skinny grumps could merge into a peaceful and compromising united nation?
