Philippe Corentin dreams that people will be content to read his books and have fun rather than devote studies, theses, and exegeses to his work. He also dreams that his biography will be kept to these words: “Born in 1936. Father in 1971. Grandfather in 2000.” Finally, he dreams that commentaries on his work are reduced to citing his favorite aphorism: “It’s very simple. There are three rules to follow for pictures books. The problem is that no one knows them.” This year, his legendary modesty will suffer, as he is the hero of an anthology of his works and featured in “My Favorite Author”, a booklet dedicated to him that will be offered to readers.

A Tomato Feast There was a little, shriveled seedling on sale. Hana noticed it and asked her father for it. She then repotted it, watered it, cared for it, and protected it from the caterpillars. On the first day of vacation, she took it with her to spend the summer at her grandmother’s house. Her parents disapproved, but Hana held her ground. Later, a typhoon blew through the garden, but the plant, rooted there, resisted. Nature often rewards those who care for her. In the middle of the summer, Hana will be able to invite all her family to a tomato feast!
Although Satomi Ichikawa is a big traveler, she hadn’t returned to her native country Japan in twenty years. Recently, three successive shows gave her the opportunity to set down her bags in the house she grew up in, where her mother still cultivates an immense garden. Suddenly, Satomi learned to admire what she had detested and viewed as a chore when she was a child, and every morning at five o’clock she made drawings of working the earth, watering, and weeding. Thus this picture book was born, a surprise and a reconciliation.

The Wolf Behind the Book Poor little Marie! She has only one consolation in life: the three books by her bed that she reads at night by candlelight. They all tell stories about the ferocious wolf in the Dark Black Forest. But then her awful cruel step-mother, not content with forcing her to slave away all day long like Cinderella, chucks her treasure into the fire. It’s too much! Marie flees for the Dark Black Forest, a bit worried all the same. But an extraordinary surprise awaits her there. The wolf is not at all the one we thought he was...
The idea for Mathis’ story was born a long time ago. It comes from his reminiscences, his adolescent refuge reading Lovecraft and Jack London’s White Fang, and the scenery of his childhood in the mountains in northeastern France. But it’s also a revolt against mean stepmothers who burn books. Do you think he’s exaggerating? Not at all: the misadventure happened to one of his friends.

Troy The Iliad precedes the Odyssey, yet is not as widely read. That’s a shame, because it is an epic poem teeming with just as much passion, and it’s “even more fantastic,” according to Yvan Pommaux. In order to reenact the famous and misunderstood Trojan War, provoked by a beauty contest between goddesses and cheating to become the mother of all endless, absurd, lying wars,Yvan took inspiration from the mise en scène of contemporary mangas: simultaneous plans, a complex tale, and paramount images.

A painter, illustrator for press, and an author and illustrator of books,
Claude Ponti
48 pages, 310 x 195 mm, €18,80
created his first book for children in 1985 for his daughter Adèle. Ponti was rather surprised to observe, during his encounters and at conferences, that not everyone who read Meye-Luv necessarily understood that the parents of Isaeus weren’t dead... because they’re still living. He wanted to send out a reassuring wink to all those in mourning: the parents are alive, and not abusive, but they allow their daughter to go live her own adventure.

In Volume I of her life (Meye-Luv), Isaeus let herself get swept away by ventures she hadn’t chosen, like a car accident. She learned a lot, and now, in Volume II of her life, Isaeus decides to leave and experience ventures that she decides upon herself. That’s better. The proof: instead of undergoing, she liberates. Instead of suffering, she heals. Instead of being alone, she encounters. There is only one constant: Luvvy Duvvy, her chubby cuddler, who remains with her, by her side, and doesn’t leave her, no matter what happens.

Let no one reproach
Emmanuel Cerisier for publishing another book on the Roman era and the gladiators: he never grows tired of it, because he adores it! Rome, its forum, its narrow streets, its intoxicating atmosphere. The Coliseum in particular fascinates him. Not long ago he rediscovered the work of the painter Gérôme and his cinematographic scenes of gladiator combats.

Octavius and the Gladiator Rome, summer of 80 A.D. The emperor Titus is at his lowest in terms of esteem from his subjects. After a series of misfortunes, the least of which isn’t the great fire that destroyed the city, he decides to elevate his position by offering the people one hundred days of sumptuous circus games. The parades of animals and the gladiator combats will be held in the sparkling new Flavian amphitheater, the Coliseum. But during this uneasy, violent period, the city is teeming with conspiracies. One of them is aimed at Verus, one of the most famous gladiators of all time. It will take the boldness and ingenuity of two itinerant fruit sellers, Octavius and his friend Antonia, to foil the plot.

No Tutu for Seurat’s Horsewoman Jeanne, the daughter of a seamstress, would never be able to pay the entry at the famous Fernando circus.Yet she is going to have the opportunity to attend the rehearsals, see the clowns and horses, and even become friends with Victor, an apprentice clown, when she delivers a new silk tutu to Miss Jenny, the horsewoman. In the stands, a painter, Georges Seurat, discreetly sketches what he sees. But then, help! While Jeanne is watching him draw, someone steals the tutu. Over the course of their investigation in Paris, Jeanne and Victor will discover the city and the secrets of Seurat’s touches of color.
already loved Seurat. Remaining faithful, she now pays him a moving and precise homage through her choices in colors and ambiance. She imagined this story from a photo of a child from the era and a painting by Signac, Les Modistes. In order to be able to evoke Seurat’s paintings, whose décor is often the world of the circus, she imagined a young girl delivering tutus, clowns, a horsewoman, and... the painter himself!

Fabian Grégoire wanted to invent a Christmas story and go back to the ambience of his childhood Decembers without falling into corny cliches. He had always wanted to talk about gestures and tools, and evoke the nobility of a skilled trade. He spent time in Meisenthal, a glassblowing city, where he learned an incredible true story about sugar embezzlement – and his project was in the bag. And then there are the silver reflections in the Christmas decorations!

The Christmas Glassblowers At the glassworks factory in Goetzenbruck, in the northeast of France, the work is tough, but magical. All year long, they make and send out their famous glass for watches and eyeglasses to the four corners of the planet. And this Christmas Eve is even more beautiful: the blowers are shaping balls and pinecones to decorate Christmas trees. Two young apprentices, Charles and Stefan, are allowed for the first time to make objects for themselves with melted glass, handling the jacks and wooden blocks. They will even have the privilege of entering the silver plating workshop with Charles’ father, where the chemist works in secret, transforming the glass balls into mirrors...
