One morning, a half-asleep Chloé, who had forgotten to put on her glasses, gets on the wrong bus. Instead of heading to school, she sets off for a strange and unusual world full of wild and wonderful monsters of all shapes and sizes. Fortunately Zorgo, the charming skeleton driving bus 666 has promised to drive her home once his shift is over. He saves her from the clutches of the vampires, whom she followed to the ball, from the clutches of the devil, with whom she has signed a pact, and from the clutches of both the phantoms and the zombies. A journey through the classics of horror literature, during which horror turns into hilarity, in the company of a heroine who knows no fear and who adapts to all circumstances. 01/08/13 12:06

Did you know that a chicken lays 120 eggs per year ? Think of the savings we can make if we raise chickens in the garden. Mary embroils her unwilling family into her ecological adventure. First she sets about building a chicken run with recycled materials, then she purchases the chickens, installs them, feeds them and waits for them to lay. What Mary doesn’t know is that chickens can also be destructive animals capable of tearing a garden apart in no time. And that cute, fluffy chickens can also turn into powerful roosters who crow for the benefit of the community. A fable that joyously pinpoints the naivety of adults’ nostalgia for a country life, when they don’t know the first thing about it. 01/08/13 11:57

SCHOOL TIME !

Today, Boris is nowhere to be found and the toys are getting bored. Ah ! There he is ! At last ! Boris was at school. That’s all. Hang on… « School » ? What’s that ? Boris looks like he’s had a great time and starts talking about what he did. The toys refuse to listen. A whole crowd of tiny Borises running around in all directions and making the teacher shout is their idea of a nightmare.

Virginie Aladjidi Caroline Pellissier Nathalie Grenier A big family means lively mealtimes at huge tables full of people, long walks in the forest, shouting, laughter, rambunctious games, friends popping round, and tons of people, all the time. Watch out, though, the inevitable news is never far away : « Sweethearts… we have some happy news to tell you… »

I SAY YES ! Boris says « No » to everything. Even when he means « Yes ». Did you sleep well, Boris ? « No! » Are you hungry, Boris ? « No ». Do you want to play football, Boris ? « No ! » His parents and the toys don’t know whether they are coming or going. Until one day, Boris’s dad decides to take him literally. « Fancy an ice cream, Boris? » « No! » Boris discovers that saying yes does have its advantages.

THE CROCOLION

15/07/13 10:24

Antonin Louchard Dad is really clever. He knows Africa like the back of his hand : what’s the biggest tree ? Easy, the baobab. The highest mountain ? Kilimandjaro ! The longest river ? The Nile. He knows everything, period. But does he know about Africa’s most dangerous animal, the Crocolion ? And does he know why it’s so dangerous ? Come on, it isn’t difficult ! It has a lion’s head at one end and a crocodile’s head at the other !

It’s Christmas Eve and Boris is awoken by his toys who are even more excited than he is. They’re waiting up to see Santa Claus. « Oh dear, oh dear, toys. » Fortunately, Boris is on hand to tell them that Santa only comes when you’re asleep, and when the toys finally do get to sleep, Boris places small gifts around the tree for each of them. The next day, the toys are overjoyed. « Okay, that’s enough ! » Boris wants to know what the real Santa Claus has brought him.

BLOW YOUR NOSE ! How can anyone be nice, sweet and charming when they have a snotty nose ? Boris wants a kiss, a compliment, a kind word. He’s tried everything he can but nothing works. Whatever’s wrong ? Fortunately the toys are there and their prescription is radical. « Boris ! Blow your nose ! »

Margaux Duseigneur

MARGAUX DUSEIGNEUR

Lola sets out into the jungle looking for her friend Fortune. But the jungle is full of dangers. She has to cross a bridge, find a hiding place, cross a creak in a boat, and help a bird in danger. Using the detachable banana leaves that slip into the slots on the pages, the reader helps Lola overcome the challenges in store : repairing the roof of a shelter, building a trap, and weaving the sail of a boat. A book-cum-game that enables children to live an exhilarating adventure in the heart of the jungle.

THE PARROT’S CAGE

Alice Gravier Laëtitia Bourget « With Mum, I’m the cuddliest little boy in the world, and with my sister Lili, I’m an absolute charmer. » « In the recreation yard, I’m the one who keeps the peace. » Cuddly, sweet and strong, the perfect little boy. At least, that’s how he describes himself. But the illustrations tell another story and, gently and ironically, contradict the perfect portrait the boy creates for himself, opposing the fairytale image of the ideal child with that of the terrible rascal brimming with mischievousness. The delightfully retro, detailed illustrations humorously depict children’s’ great spirit of freedom.

SYLVAIN ALZIAL

La Cage du Perroquet MERLIN

Sylvain Alzial Merlin Adapted from a Persian folktale, La Cage du perroquet is the story of a rich merchant from the East who owns a magnificent and highly eloquent parrot. Alone in his golden cage, the beautiful bird is dreadfully bored. One day as he is preparing to travel to India, the merchant asks the parrot if he would like a gift. The bird replies : « Master I believe India is the land of the parrot. Please send my greetings. Tell them I am alone in a cage, and that I am terribly bored. Tell them I am thinking of them and may they spare a thought for me. » In reply the master gives his parrot one of the finest gifts known to man : freedom. And teaches him the best lesson in the world : « Stop talking and freedom will be yours. »

Marie-Lou loves watching her grandmother work. She is an excellent seamstress. She follows her grandmother’s fingers as they wend their way across the fabric and listens to her hum a song in a language she doesn’t recognize. « What is that song ? » she asks herself. Marie-Lou knows that her grandmother is hiding a secret, and for her birthday she asks her to reveal it. Her grandmother agrees to divulge it in her own way and embroiders a doll’s dress. The little girl discovers her family’s secret and learns at last where she has come from. The illustrator of L’Oiseau Arlequin and Le Cavalier bleu leads us through the personal world of a little girl, a world where threads and fabrics mingle with thoughts and memories and where images of the past echo those of the present. For the secret in question has been quietly hidden T throughout the pages.

out redevient noir.

Madame Leprince de Beaumont Nicole Claveloux In this republication of Être publishers’ original work, the tale of Beauty and the Beast tale is here recreated in the original language of Madame Leprince de Beaumont with all its olde worlde magic. Nicole Claveloux’s visual world offers a delightful setting for the work : the delicate, detailed images offer sublime yet sometimes terrifying portraits that focus on the poetry and cruelty of the story. This traditional-styled book with its canvas spine, black and white silver-enhanced engravings and its illuminated dropped initials, is beyond doubt a timeless classic.

Marguerite Duras Katy Couprie Few remember that, in the early seventies, Marguerite Duras, published a children’s album. Ah ! Ernesto is the story of a young boy who refuses to go to school because at school he is taught « things that he doesn’t know ». Ernesto’s parents decide to go see the teacher to tell him about Ernesto’s decision. What follows is a rambling exchange which asks essential questions about the nature of knowledge and teaching, questions that are still as relevant today. 2014 is Marguerite Duras’s centenary year, so the timing was perfect to republish this work. Katy Couprie’s illustrations (author of the Dictionnaire fou du corps, (Bologna Ragazzi Award) offer Duras’s long forgotten work a beautiful second life.

Jean Lecointre Outis is the name that Ulysses gave himself to escape the Cyclops in Homer’s Odyssey. It is also the name of the hero in this modern Odyssey, recreated and corrected by Jean Lecointre. Will Outis get to Athens station in time to meet his wife and son ? First he has to sail the Styx, avoid the bewitching Sirens, escape from the nymph Calypso’s island, take part in a barbecue organized by the Cyclops, so it is highly unlikely Outis be able to belie his reputation as an eternal late arriver. We also see Heracles cause traffic jams because the Hydra is decapitating people on the motorway, as well as centaurs fighting in bars. With this highly colorful twist on the Odyssey tale, the author leads his readers once more into a wonderful madcap world.

Virginie, the daughter of Sylvia, is getting married. The event is set to reunite a very large family, all of whom have their own opinion on the event. Monologues follow monologues – the uncle, the brother and the mother, etc. Through each portrait emerges the special relationship that each member of the family has to money : the spoiled child, the former trader, the computer hacker, the cynical manager, the Mafioso who’s received a death threat, the environmental protester, and the celestial mendicant. Each presents the seduction of money, a vision that is immediately belied by the following portrait, which sends the mind spinning and provides a brilliant reminder that money has no smell.

e veux qu’on vienne me chercher ! Maintenant ! Pourquoi on m’a enlevé mon chiffon ?

THE WINGS OF THE SYLPH

Hervé Giraud Private Botillon set out for the First World War and found himself at the front. In the midst of the fire, the footsoldier has no idea what’s happening to him. The story of Private Botillon alternates from one chapter to the next with the tale of a family reunion in the present day, to celebrate the hundredth birthday of the great grandmother, Private Botillon’s daughter whose father died in battle so she never knew him. The family’s younger generation is busy playing war in the garden and their battles provide a joyous contrast with Private Botillon’s account. The narrative is told in two voices to evoke the bloodshed of the early twentieth century, the echoes of which still resound today. While the history passages are moving and harsh, the contemporary section is humorous and light, and the dual tones work well together to tell the story of the Great War.

Jeanne Benameur She is 17, and with her high school diploma in her pocket, university awaits, as well as freedom in the students residence far from her parents’ home. We are in the seventies, the universities are hotbeds of revolution and on her first day, a young man starts haranguing the lecture room ; his discourse is very eloquent. She knows nothing about politics but he leaves an impression on her and she desires him. The novel starts in the young man’s bedroom, the bedroom in which she blooms into a lover. Alongside the man, she grows, and discovers that she too has something to say and yearns to say it. She also manages to exorcize the demons of her youth which until this point have prevented her from become a woman. Jeanne Benameur returns to our catalogue with a powerful, personal tale. An ode to freedom, love, and sensuality. Her last novel published by Actes Sud, Profanes, won the RTL/Lire prize.

Pascale Maret As a baby Lucie was found at the foot of a tree in the forest. Welcomed and adopted by loving parents, she grew up like all children. Passionate about dance, she dreamed of playing the role of a sylph, the air spirit, a cross between angels and elves. When she joins a dance academy, she is finally cast in the role and throws herself body and soul into rehearsals, ignoring her tutor’s advice to take care of herself and the bumps growing on her back. Lucie is the offspring of a human and a sylph and is an exceptional being. As she is walking through the forest, she meets her sisters. She lacks their lightness but in contact with nature she is finally able to spread her wings. Naturally she must keep her metamorphosis a secret. A novel that transports the reader into a world of dance and fantasy.
