Not me/Me too Mario Ramos 48 pages / 170 x 170 mm / Board Book New edition / CD with files available

Children often compare themselves to the people surrounding them. Here the child compares to animals (dog, elephant, monkey, sheep) because it's more fun! «The elephant is huge. I’m not. The elephant has a long nose. I don’t. Yet there is one thing that the elephant makes just like me...» Mario Ramos was born in Brussels in 1958 of a Belgian mother and a Portuguese father. While studying graphic communication, he discovered the fabulous drawings of Tomi Ungerer and Saul Steinberg. He started by creating several posters, drawings for the press and finally books for children, which have become his main activity. «To make little ones and adults laugh and think is the most beautiful recompense.» Mario Ramos has published more than 30 books at Pastel. He left us in December 2012.

The Blankeater 40 pages / 210 x 295 mm CD with files available

Julien Béziat

The other day, something terrible happened to my blankies. It happened when I was at school, Berk my duck told me all about it. First something weird came into my bedroom. Nobody paid attention to it, it looked like a soft potato. It snuck beside Rabinoo, and then… GULP! It gulped him down! At the same time, the thing morphed into Rabinoo’s shape. The blankies looked at it and understood: it was a blankeater! Julien Béziat was born in 1978 in Périgueux, France. Growing up, he drew and painted beside his father while sharing his mother’s love of books. After receiving his degree from the University of Bordeaux, he became a professor of fine arts and earned his Ph.D. While he was working and studying, Julien began to write and illustrate for children. He now lives in Bordeaux with his wife and two children. Mäko, his first book has been awarded with the Montreuil Youth Book Fair Prize.

The Gold Coin Illustrations: Marius Text: Rascal 36 pages / 230 x 200 mm Coprinting opportunity

Bears are big and men are small. Bears are playful and curious. So are men’s young ones. Bears hunt seals. Men sometimes hunt bears. Nanook sings, banging on his tambourine, and the white bear dances to his song.

Rascal was born in Belgium in 1959. After working in advertising, drawing posters for the theatre and having different jobs, he decided to devote himself to children’s books. He has been awarded the Great Prize for children’s literature of the French-speaking community of Belgium for 2009-2012.

A grey mouse found a huge gold coin in a field. Since she already had all she needed, Mouse asked herself what she could do with her treasure. Unable to find an answer, she decided to pay a visit to her friend Frog. -Look what I’ve found, my friend! -A gold coin! Gosh! Exclaimed Frog. If destiny had wanted me to find it, I would have given it to you. -You really are my best friend! Mouse said. -As true as frogs have pretty thighs! -Then it’s for you! Marius lives in Brussels. The Golden Coin is his first picture book.

Littl’horse 32 pages / 245 x 245 mm CD with files available

Martine Bourre

Littl’horse is bored in his paddock. Every morning, he eats grey balls at the bottom of a bucket. Every morning, he looks at the green grass, over there, in the distance. In his paddock, Littl’horse turns round and round. He turns faster and faster like a horse on a merry-go-round. This morning, the grass over there, is greener than yesterday. In his paddock, Littl’horse shoots his hooves above the fence. Martine Bourre was born in Paris in 1949 and now lives in Normandy. She has written and illustrated about a hundred books for children. In each new book, she is surprised by an encounter, an adventure, a world to be expressed and the inextinguishable pleasure of animating animals throughout the pages. “If I were to illustrate my most cherished word, freedom, I’d try to outline a galloping horse with one single brush stroke.”

Pizza Emile Jadoul 32 pages / 200 x 200 mm Coprinting opportunity

32 pages / 210 x 295 mm CD with files available

Lucien doesn’t like the coming of winter. Leaves fall, his tree is cold and birds fly away. But winter also has nice surprises in store. And Lucien’s father knows how to warm up trees and his son’s heart.

Once upon a time there were a dog, a pig, a duck and a hen. “I’m hungry,” the dog says. “Me too!” The pig says.“Is it time to eat already?” The duck says, surprised.“I’m not very hungry!” The hen says.“How about we have pizza?” The dog suggests.“Good idea!” The duck and the pig reply.“I’m not interested!” The hen said.

Catherine Pineur was born on the 14th June 1969. She studied illustration at the Saint-Luc Institute in Liège and at the Decorative Arts in Strasbourg. She lives with her two children in the middle of the Belgian countryside, surrounded by hills, cows, hens and geese... Émile Jadoul was born in 1963 in Avennes, Belgium. Since he left the Fine Arts Academy, he’s been living in the countryside in a house in the the woods, out of which rabbits and foxes regularly come, as well as pigs and even bears! All these animals inspire him with pictures full of colour. When he’s not drawing in his studio, he talks about his work and gives classes to future illustrators.

Anne-Isabelle Le Touzé Text: Carole Fives

36 pages / 295 x 210 mm Coprinting opportunity

When the children leave school in the evening, the teacher rests. She sleeps under her desk, just like all the other teachers. Except those who sleep in the storage cupboard. These teachers are easy to recognize: they have chalk stains on their pants. Around midnight, the teacher awakes. She tiptoes out of her classroom… And joins her friends, the other schoolteachers… This is party time! Carole Fives is both an author and a visual artist, with a double degree in Philosophy and Fine Arts. She lives in Lille, where she teaches in an arts and graphics school. She writes for adults and for children. Anne Isabelle Le Touzé was born in 1963 in Paris, France, where she spent her early years. She then lived in Congo and subsequently in Rennes, back in France, where she studied at the Fine Arts Academy. Kitty Crowther

Poka & Mine series: 7 titles

Very early this morning, Poka and Mine go fishing. They settle down along the lake. "And now?,” Mine asks. "We are waiting for the fish to bite," answers Poka. Poka will quickly join his daughter for a cup of tea! Kitty Crowther was born in Brussels in 1970, from a Swedish mother and a British father. Children’s literature - especially that from Great Britain and Scandinavia - has always been a passion for her. A falling tooth! As far as birds can remember, nothing of the like has ever happened. It’s time for Anna to grow up and climb down from her Treedad. Céline Sorin was born in Paris in 1972. She first worked as a speech therapist with elderly people, then in a Deafness and Mental Health Centre for children. She always tried to establish a relationship and revive communication. Ogre flies 36 pages / 200 x 260 mm Coprinting opportunity

Illustrations: Edith Text: Rascal

Winter came early that year and when he woke up, Ogre could not push the door open to step outside for too much snow had fallen overnight. Ogre thus threw his legs in one of the windows and sunk into snow up to his big red leather boots. Then he saw something wriggle in the far distance. He first thought it was a pet, a cat or a rabbit, but when he came closer, he understood it was no such thing. It was a wing. White and quite big. If I am meant to have wings, I’d rather have two than one! Ogre thought. Rascal was born in Belgium in 1959. After working in advertising, drawing posters for the theatre and having different jobs, he decided to devote himself to children’s books. He has been awarded the Great Prize for children’s literature of the French-speaking community of Belgium for 2009-2012. Edith was born in Marseille in 1960. In 1990, together with Yann, she signed the first volume of the comic series Basil et Victoria (Prix Alph’art in 1993), which was soon made into a cartoon. She then illustrated many picture books for Pastel, as well as many young-adult novels. In 2000 she returned to comics. Her latest book is a graphic novel, La chambre de Lautréamont (2012). Edith has two children and has been living in Le Havre since 1991.

Dolls are for girls Illustrations: Jean-Luc Englebert Text: Ludovic Flamant

40 pages / 140 x 190 mm CD with files available

My mom’s sister is weird. The weirdest thing she has ever done is to make a rag doll for my little brother’s birthday. The other weird thing is that my little brother did looooooove this present. “I will call you Cindy.” When my brother said he wanted to sleep with Cindy, my father said: “Not a big deal, he’ll get over it.” The following day, he took the time to dress her and also to share his cornflakes with her. Mommy thought it was cute. But my dad said: “Now, it’s too much! No! That’s enough!” Ludovic Flamant was born in Namur in 1978. He clearly remembers crying at the age of twelve because he was no longer able to play with his Playmobils. So he waited for the wish to come back. In the meanwhile he wrote for adults: a novel, some theatre… And then it came back! Now he plays every time he writes for children. He lives in Brussels with his son and daughter. Jean-Luc Englebert was born in Verviers, Belgium, in 1968. He attended courses at the Saint-Luc Institute in Brussels and, after being tempted by comic strips, became an illustrator of children’s books. His stories are tender, illustrated by luminous and sober watercolours. He lives in Brussels and has two daughters.

Léo Rau is a family venture with recreational aims. Its two partners are Rascal and his son, Lucas Nottet. As a child, Lucas loved to invent stories with a cast of characters and his brother Marius used to set them in panels and balloons. Neil Desmet was born in the Parisian suburbs in 1975. He spent his first years in Paris, then studied illustration at the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels, after having been tempted by comic strips. Neil Desmet now lives in Brussels, with his companion, their two daughters and a cat.
