As if presents another duel between the wily bird and the kindly elephant. In this episode, our two familiar heroes (from the previous album, Bigger than you) set each other a challenge to invent ever more powerful characters, as each seeks to dominate the other. As things escalate, the elephant triumphs once more. For as imposing as he may be, his adversary always has a weakness somewhere. A tale for younger children telling of relationships to the other. 2 years + - 17 x 20 – 32 pages – ₏11

The first is not only a picture book, it is also a toy in its own right: it moves, it functions, it misleads and there are many ways to look at it. It is also a competition where readers have to find the connections between competitors, and references to other tales, songs or stories: the fox who cuts the cheese to save time, or the little white horse who believes that everybody else is running behind him, and that he is all on his own out front. The first is a catalogue of characters that will mark children’s imaginations as well as their daily lives: the heroes are those from the works of La Fontaine, Lewis Carrol, MĂŠliès, and Daudet etc. (like the kinder egg, the louse and snakes and ladders). 2 years + - 17 X 22 – 32 pages – â‚Ź13.40

09/12/13 16:22

Go snail go is the first edition of a work created in the seventies by the Swiss designers and architects, Elena and Jan Kroell. It is a paean to taking things slowly and a reflection on the relationship between writing and images in children’s picture books. The snail may seem to have made a great start, but he is very soon overtaken by the prose and he can’t keep up. The album meanwhile loses patience with the snail and leaves the little creature to wallow in his slow distracted life. The timeless tale of sucker snail, replete with seventies styles graphics that are still as fresh today as they always have been. 2 years + - 17 X 22 – 32 pages – €13.40

Looks like Mr. Wolf is in a good mood today. He still terrifies everyone he meets, until he asks them for ingredients – for a giant cake. He has a whale of a time with the flour from the sleeping miller, the milk from the goat, the eggs from the chickens and Little Red Riding Hood’s butter. His guests are all victims from fairy tales; they are going to be delighted. Even though the wolf is an excellent baker, he is still a wolf and his cake is only one part of a feast he has been lovingly preparing. Once a wolf always a wolf. An album combining the legendary characters of fairy tales which, through both text and illustrations, plays on the dangers we may feel and then forget, even when they are staring right at us. 3 years + - 24 X 19 – 32 pages – €15

Author: Olivier Douzou Illustrator: Frédérique Bertrand

It all starts with an interview in the street: “Are you for or against smacking children?” parents and children alike take a stand. Eventually a child steps forward to tell a tale illustrating his own experience, and the real story begins. Once upon a time there was a king who smacked his son so hard that the son split in two. One of the two halves carried on appearing before his subjects but, when he did, he had to stand in profile; the other however rebelled and was locked away in a tower. A picture book that asks questions about the nature of punishment and power and the thin line between authority and violence. And when the final page turns and the book closes, parents and children can start to talk about this sensitive and very topical issue. The duality of authority and violence is also to be found in both the writing of the book and its layout on the page, or in the confrontation of two distinct systems of narrative, one classic (the tale), the other more contemporary. 4 years + - 21 X 27.7 – 64 pages – €16 approx.

WAF AND WAF

Author: José Parrondo

The adventures of a little hat man (Waf) and a dogdog (Waf) whose peregrinations lead us into a series of situations as crazy as the protagonists themselves. For in this world nothing is as it seems: like Waf and Waf, we find ourselves confronted by laws that obey only the imagination. Children will have to look hard and use their gray cells to work out what’s wrong with each picture. Bags of fun in store for all! In the silent comic strip tradition, each page-long scene is presented as a speech-bubble-less series of pictures. Some strips have been created with input from Anne Herbauts. 4 years + - 18 X 24.5 – 48 pages – €16

Meet the Zoorgalo troop with paulo, the barley sugar swallower, Sidonie, the sausage tamer, Michel and Michelle the fork throwers, Jojo the cocoa breather and, of course, Rosa, the bearded lady, who is selling candy floss. Mademoiselle Zita has read Rosa’s cards and has revealed four keys to Rosa’s future. On her journey, Rosa will encounter Bluebeard, the gas station attendant, love, lethargy and finally happiness. Renaud perrin’s magnificent linocuts lead us through a mysterious circus landscape, with nothing left out. Simply walk through the pictorial world and savor. The tour de force of this work lies in its deliberately candid “classic” narrative which, page by page, questions the themes of nomadism, ephemerality, otherness and elsewhere, when they are disturbed by the sedentary, the sustainable, routine and inertia. 5 years + - 22.5 x 30 - 40 pages - €17

RICHARD MARNIER

MY DAD’S IN A CAGE

Author: Agnès de Lestrade Illustrator: Morgan Navarro

On the estate where Loli lives, the young hoodlums call his father “the boss”. If Loli’s dad is a boss of anything at all though, he’s the boss of his vegetable patch. He’s not a wheeler and dealer kind of boss by any stretch of the imagination, because his serious passions are planting, growing, tending and harvesting. It’s never easy to get anything growing amid the high-rise project tower blocks, but Loli’s dad has created a real garden. Tired with trying to make ends meet, he attempts to steal three steaks from the supermarket, one for his wife, one for little Vasco and one for Loli. Caught in the act, in the ensuing mêlée, Loli’s dad ends up fighting and hitting a policeman, before winding up in jail pending trial. Before the verdict is passed, locals organize a defense campaign. Their weapons? Radishes and leek soup. 8 years + - 12 X 17 – 80 pages – €6.80

After the death of her mother, Brune goes to live with her aunt and her aunt’s husband in a village by the Atlantic Ocean. Brune is a silent solitary teen who has never met her father. She spends her time on the beach, taking photos and making sketches of the seascape. She is on the beach the day a woman is murdered. Maybe Brune saw something that might help the police find the murderer. Suddenly, a lot of different people become interested in her and her pictorial archives: the police naturally; but also a mysterious figure who tries to attack her twice. The day her uncle is arrested by the police as a suspect, Brune finds herself confronted by her family’s political past, including that of her mother. Gradually she discovers the conspiracy of silence surrounding their political militancy and secrets, especially the big secret of Brune’s real origins. In Ocean file, Claudine Aubrun creates a subtle, yet tangled web of intrigue, with a delicious atmosphere, while also painting an irresistible portrait of a teenage girl, living by the ocean during the summer, a story that is sure to capture the hearts of teenage boys and girls alike. 13 years + - 14 X 20.5 – 120 pages – €9.60

Baltimore 1924. Eleanora is one of the black kids surviving on her own resourcefulness in segregationist America. Eleanora lives alone with her mother, Sadie, who is struggling to hold down her job and to not succumb to alcoholism. Eleanora has never met her father; she is told he is a jazz musician in New York. Eleanora can stand up for herself; she talks tough and fights hard; she has done the round of reform schools, and brothels. But Eleanora has dreams: to someday meet her father, and to sing, because in segregationist America, jazz and the blues is the only way out of the dead-end life, the only salvation for Black Americans. Soon she starts playing at jazz clubs, and finally encounters her father. Her own exceptional voice gets her noticed and, at the age of 18, she signs a contract with Columbia to cut her first vinyl. The novel tells the true story of a little girl growing up, a girl who would later call herself Billie Holiday. To recount Eleanora’s exceptional tale, Louis Atangana invents his own jazz lingo in a tribute to the Afro-American language of the time. 13 years + - 14 X 20.5 – 128 pages – €9.60

casseurs de solitude

“There’s always something we can do,” thinks Lucian after his mother is suddenly sacked from her executive position after sacrificing herself to her work. This is a phrase that could apply to all eight of the stories in the collection, which tell the tales of other teens, confronted by unknown or difficult situations, who are forced to act positively, and show solidarity, bravery and clear-headedness. There is always something we can do, something that somehow works. Thus we meet Adra, threatened by female circumcision, and saved by a network of solidarity. There is also paloma and his horse, Magico, that people are trying to take away from paloma. There is Zoe, confronted by her father’s homosexuality, and more. Nine stories introducing a varied cast of characters, creating a community of young people who each find themselves at a decisive point in their lives. 13 years + - 14 X 20.5 – 160 pages – €11 approx.

Author: Ahmed Kalouaz Ludovic lives a normal peaceful life of a normal peaceful high school student. Until one morning when the police turns up at his house to arrest his father, pierre Brigneau, on charges of complicity in a fraud network, the ponzi gang. Ludovic and his mother are left totally clueless as to how a serious accountant could choose a career in delinquency. And: “Whatever did he spend the money on?” When his father is released from prison several months later, trust within the family has totally disintegrated, a situation not helped by the fact that his father has nothing to say about his misdemeanors. However, he does invite his son on holiday, just the two of them together, in an old camping car. On their journey through magnificent landscapes, father and son start to open up to each other. pierre tells of his youth, his break-up with his parents, and how he met an old miner, a member of the resistance during the Second World War, who was like a second father to him. But Ludovic is still yearning to hear about the one thing that really matters, the true secret of his father’s crime, so that wounds can begin to heal. In this subtle, moving work, the author offers a beautiful portrait of a father-son relationship. 12 years + - 14 x 20.5 - 160 pages - €11

Author: Elise Fontenaille

Californian teenager, Mina, is invited, for the first time, to visit the Dominican Republic, where her father was born, by her cousin, Antonio. Antonio introduces her to her great-aunt Abela, so that Mina can finally learn the history of her family, as her father refuses to say anything. The journey begins to change her life. Sitting in a magnificent garden that once belonged to her greatgrandparents, Mina learns of the tragic story of her grandmother, Minerva, and her two sisters, all of whom were killed in 1960, on the orders of the then-dictator, Rafael Trujillo. Élise Fontenaille tells a cruel tale with breathtaking twists and turns, where the monster is a bloodthirsty tyrant with a penchant for young girls and beautiful adolescent princesses who are forced to gamble with their lives. The three Mirabal sisters are famous heroines in Latin America, and the day of their death, 25 November, has now become the international day for the elimination of violence against women. 13 years + - 14 X 20.5 – 64 pages – €8.70

Benjamin is an average teen, i.e. totally obsessed by girls. He’s a good looking kid too, and when spotted by a modeling agency rep in the street, they sign him up instantly. His first job takes him to South Africa for an underwear commercial. Suddenly, hanging around beautiful women turns his obsession into a nightmare. Vincent Cuvellier’s novel humorously breaks down taboos, and tells us of the triumphs, trials and tribulations of teen boyhood when kids only have one thought on their minds. 13 years + - 14 X 20.5 – 96 pages – €9 approx.
