Inside: Dear Readers, We hope everyone enjoyed reading the October and December issues of our new ISB Insight Magazine. Here comes the vibrant March issue filled with excellent news about our students’ outstanding achievements: Top of the World Certificate for the highest mark in the world in the IGCSE Sociology Exam, Fencing Champions Awards and Winners of the ESU Junior Public Speaking Competition, just to name a few. In this issue you will find out who these students are and what motivates them to be the best. As always, we have been very busy and productive here at ISB. We have plenty of reasons to celebrate, to be thankful and to be proud. We invite you to read about the students’ continuous learning in the Class Articles pages. You will find out who are the Stars of the Week, who won the Golden Mouse and Golden Shoe awards, what the Student Council has been up to and which projects and competitions students participated in. We are very thankful to PTA for their constant support and for organising the Winter Show for the Primary School. We are also very proud of the Diploma of Excellency awarded to ISB by the Ministry of Education of Romania and for ISB becoming an ECDL Examination Centre.

It is a privilege for me to be in the middle of it all, to be able to work with students, teachers and the school’s IT department to put together this “time capsule” of our school. It is a team effort and just before we say it is “good for printing”, we briefly go one more time through its pages and we are very impressed with the amount of work and energy everyone has been putting into teaching and learning. Events, projects, school activities, celebrations and awards will become one day the sweet school memories of successful and fulfilled adults. “The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you”. Winter, Arctic Animals & Balloons in Nursery L MRS. LUMINITA LASCU, NURSERY TEACHER

After the winter holiday the children in Nursery started the second term with great enthusiasm, ready to play and learn new things. We have been learning about Winter and the clothes we ha ve to wear in cold weather. We have talked about why we need to wear them and where on our bodies we put them, e.g. hat on our head, gloves on our hands. We have made different pieces of clothing including, woolly hat pictures, and scarves with repeating patterns and a pair of mittens, painting on one and printing it onto the other to make them the same. We practice matching patterns on hats, scarves and gloves and played number games to recognise numerals and to match the number to the quantity eg. buttons on mittens or snowflakes. Another topic we have been learning about was ‘Arctic animals’. Everybody was excited to make penguins, walruses and polar bears to decorate our classroom displays. A

We are happy to tell you that most of the children can name basic 2D shapes – square, circle, and triangle, and some are beginning to use mathematical vocabulary to describe them. We also practiced counting up to 10 objects from a larger group independently when we tried to see how much fish the penguin ate. We also measured ourselves against an Emper-

We know now those big blocks of ice from the Poles can float and that many objects made of wood can float too. We also know how to blow up a balloon using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, it was so much fun!

Why outdoor play is so important for Early Years children MRS. VICKY SEESHAAN, EYFS DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Here at ISB we strongly believe that outdoor play is a vital for your children’s well-being and development. It is also loads of fun! We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and outdoor learning all year round is a key aspect of our curriculum. Being outdoors has a very positive impact on your children’s learning and development. It allows children to explore, take risks, use their senses and interact with different environments, weather, seasons and the natural world. Children are able to play on a large scale outside and burn off energy they may not be able to inside the classroom. This in turn has great benefits for their general health and gross motor development. Even in the cold weather being outside will have very positive benefits for your children.

All there is to know about Goldilocks and The Three Bears MS. CORINA DUME, RECEPTION TEACHER Daniel “ The jam porrige is my favourite”

During Literacy in Reception C we have been discussing the story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. We used a bag of clues and children had to guess the story we are talking about. After that we read the story and we talked about the characters in the book and the setting of the story. The children have been using the Role Play Area to act out the story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’

with masks. We made porridge and ate it with different flavours such as jam, honey and sugar. The most preferred flavor was the jam porridge.

Speedy Pizzas made by Reception K MS. KITTI & MS. ANGELA, RECEPTION K

Reception K became interested in using objects as telephones in order to call for a delivery pizza. One of the children suggested we make a pizza delivery shop in the role play area of our classroom. Some of us brought different sized pizza boxes from home. We made a big batch of playdough to create our pizza dough. We decided on some toppings (tomatoes, olives, onions and green peppers) and found pictures on the internet that we printed out and laminated to add to the pizza. The children even began to add glitter as

‘spices’ and cut up small pieces of yellow wool as ‘cheese’. We added aprons and chefs hats, a small oven as well as pizza cutters and rolling pins. We practised our phonics by writing menus and taking telephone orders. After a few days we discovered we needed a delivery bag, a driver’s hat and even

a motorbike! After working at “Speedy Pizza” for a week we experimented with making our own real pizzas, choosing the sauce, toppings and the right amount of cheese to place on top. We cooked them in a giant oven and they looked delicious. After all our hard work, we got to do the best part….eating them! Yum- yum!

Year 1 are going back in time to explore houses from the past and investigate materials

Year 1 children have been working very hard this term during English lessons. We started looking at and discussing non -chronological reports and wrote a variety of our own. We also described people and events in order to develop to writing and reading awareness. We have now started a new unit - Simple Rhymes. We have read and recited poems ande recited poems and rhyming texts, becoming aware of rhyming words. We even tried to write our own version of a popular rhyme! This term in Maths Year 1 have been discovering lots of new things! We learnt how to solve word problems, listening for clues to tell us whether

to take-away or add. We also learnt to count in 10’s and are learning to identify the Tens and Units in a 2 digit number. We had a lot of fun in our data handling lessons, sorting different objects into groups, making picture graphs and creating Venn diagrams. We used both our own and a given criteria to sort objects and pictures. In Humanities we have been talking about houses and homes. We used pencils and paint to create pictures of our own homes, thinking carefully about what they looked like. We have also been investigating houses from the past. We have compared the features of old and new houses and have started to find out about how household items have changed in the last 100 years. We created our own old homes used printing

techniques. In Science Year 1 are learning about Materials. We learned what materials are, where they come from, what they are used for and what their properties are. We went on a “Materials Hunt” around the school and in our classrooms to find them in different objects and observe how they are used. We also made a Materials Investigation Book where we wrote our observations after we closely looked at materials. Later on during the term we learned about fabrics and what they are made of. We learned which materials are manmade and which of them are natural. We used magnifying glasses to observe fabrics and learned a range of adjectives to describe them.

Life in Year 2 this half term MRS. KAREN WILLOUGHBY, YEAR 2 YEAR LEADER AND DEPUTY PRINCIPAL KEY STAGE 1 Year 2 boys are dressed to impress

This term in Year 2 we have all worked really hard preparing for our year group production as well as getting involved in all the other special activities that were taking place in school such as Science week and Inclusion week. English: In English we focused this term on developing our reading voices. We practised in our production sessions with the use of expression and fluency. We were able to further our skills in our English lessons, the children really enjoyed looking at the wonderful work of Julia Donaldson especially the story Room on a Broom. Maths: In Maths this term we have been exploring more Time, Capacity

and Number Work. The children got involved in lots of fun activities such as estimating how long it would take to do different tasks and then trying to do them against the clock. The children practised measuring liquids and we even made our own secret recipes using militres and litres.

Music: In Music lessons the children came together to work on composing their own pieces of music. They practised using a range of different instruments to follow a beat and then they worked together to compose and perform their own piece of music.

Science: In Science we have enjoyed carrying out fun experiments and learning some cool ‘wow!’ science facts. The children were encouraged to explain the different scientific processes using new vocabulary. They have got better at forming a hypothesis based on what they already know and they eagerly await the results of their experiments to conclude their work.

Finally in Year 2 we really benefited from the activities we did in Inclusion Week. As a year group the children learned that whilst it is very important to work hard in school, it is equally important to develop and maintain strong friendships. We explored different strategies to help each other to feel happy and included in school. We really hope that every child in school feels valued, safe and happy.

This half term Year 3 had a lot of fun learning about Living and Nonliving things. Now we can tell you how to identify if something is living or non-living. We enjoyed playing the Tic-Tac-Toe game which is like Naughts and Crosses but played with picture cards. We looked at the

Year 4 fly to Neverland MR. SCOTT CABLE, MR. SCOTT CABLE

It has been a dramatic start to 2015 this term in Year 4 with the teachers and children very busy preparing for our forthcoming production of ‘Peter Pan’. The children have worked very hard to learn their lines, perfect their acting and fine tune their best singing voices for what we are sure will be a spectacular show. Our English work this term has also been dramatic as we have been reading and discussing other short play scripts in our ‘Play scripts’ unit. We identified the key features of play scripts and used these to write and perform our own. There was also tension in our first English unit of the term ‘Stories about problems and issues’ which provided us with some excellent discussions of real life problems.

In Maths we worked tirelessly to improve our mental and written calculation methods for all four operations during our ‘Number and Problem Solving’ unit and now can use from a range of strategies to solve these. We enjoyed showing of our mental skills playing games like ‘Fizzbuzz’ and ‘Shootout’ and started solving increasingly complex word problems, some involving three or four steps! We are currently making good progress with our second unit of the term ‘Measures and Problem Solving’ and we especially enjoyed measuring and comparing our bodies.

Our Science work this term has been electric and we have really enjoyed making a range of circuits using different components in our unit ‘Electricity and Magnetism’, we are looking forward to exploring magnetism. We also greatly enjoyed Science week and can now perform and explain a range of experiments using items we can find at home. All in all it has been busy but enjoyable and successful term in Year 4 and we can look forward to our final production of our show and a well earned half term break.

“How is made?” Year 5 Trip to Danone Yogurt Factory MR. ROBIN MORRISON, YEAR 5 TEACHER Students sample products from the factory

In January, Year 5 visited the Danone yogurt factory in Colentina. The purpose of this field trip was to see how yogurt was manufactured and what goes into every pot. Students learned that milk is collected from dairy farms across Romania and brought to the factory. After adding the bacteria, the milk is incubated at about 46°C until firm. Fruit is then added to flavour. They also learned that the fruit and bacteria are imported from Germany. Students watched thousands of cartons being filled with yogurt and packaged ready for the shops and they tasted many of the products made in the factory which made this trip a one off experience.

Year 6 Having Fun on the Ice Skating Rink David,

“We went ice skating at Cismigiu Park. It was freezing cold, even though we stormed to the oval rink. At first the ice felt uncomfortable, but later on we got used to it. Some children fell a lot, however they never gave up. On the other hand, I was somewhere in between. I am not professional, but it was not the first time. Mainly we had a great time.”

A very nice lady told us about how they make bread and even let us touch the dough. There were some very big machines mixing all the ingredients. After that the pieces of dough were put on a conveyor belt and then they were put in the oven. At the end we got to taste the warm bread and even got to sample of the other types of bread and cakes for free! Really enjoyed it!” Ilinca ( Year 6M)

The ESU Junior Public Speaking Competition is aimed at students aged 8-11 who want to improve their speaking and presentation skills and their ability to think analytically on their feet, while enhancing their speech writing skills. The competition also helps to develop confidence in its participants. The theme of this year’s competition was ‘Life is a journey, not a destination’. The region round of the competition

“I was very excited at the beginning, a little scared, too. The room was full of people, parents and children. When it was my turn, my legs and my hands were trembling. However, I was able to say the whole speech and I tried to answer the questions. I had a lot of questions. It was a great experience. I will be there again next year!” Daniel (Year 4F) “I won second prize which was a great honour as only half of the children won a prize. Last year, I won the first place with a speech on the theme ‘Communication’ which seemed to me a lot easier subject to talk about. I think the contest

perfectly. After a week of really much oral practice, the day of the final round came. They were 130 children in total, split in 5 rooms. In my room they were 27 kids. I had to wait about 40 minutes till the judge called my name. Once again I said my speech perfectly! Then a guy asked me one question, and then my friend asked me another one. Actually, my answers helped me to get a better score. It was only one moment when I thought I was not going to win a prize because the others’ speeches were very good. But I got First Place! “Peace” at the Primary Art Week MS. REBECCA FOX, HUMANITIES AND ARTS COORDINATOR

Primary Art Week from 15th to 19th December 2014 had the theme ‘Peace’. During the week the children learnt the importance of peace and working peacefully together to create some wonderful pieces of art. Children in Year 1 created dream catchers, clay peace medals and even creates some yoga inspired Mandalas. The children in Year 2 worked together to make a superb dove which can be seen hovering in the Year 1 and 2 corridor, come and take a look! The children in Year 3 got messy with the clay sculpturing and painting clay doves, and the year 4 children worked together on many

different pieces of peace art. The children in Year 5 spent lots of time ripping, cutting and scrunching up pieces of paper to make eye-catching collages which featured some famous faces known for their peace speeches and songs; John Lennon and Martin Luther King. Last but not least the Year 6 students showed off their drawing skills with some great peace drawings. Samples of Peace Art from each class was put

on display in the Gallery throughout the first half term, I hope you all got a chance to take a look at it. As well as individual and group work within the class the staff and students from the Pre-School and Primary school worked together to make a huge Peace Tree by drawing round their hands. The tree is proudly on display in the Gallery, if you haven’t seen it yet come and see, you will need to look up though!

Sensational Scientists MR. ANDREW MORGAN, SCIENCE COORDINATOR

In the first week of February, ISB primary celebrated ‘Science Week’. Each year group performed a different experiment every day or watched demonstrations that helped show a certain scientific principal. These covered a variety of topics including: floating and sinking objects; dissolving; air pressure and centrifugal forces. Children

The ‘Star of the Week’ and ‘Star of the Month’ awards are in place to formally recognise the excellent work and behaviour of the students in our school. Each week on a Monday children from Year 1 to Year 6 are chosen by their teachers and teaching assistants to receive the ‘Star of the Week’ award. This award can be given for many different reasons; good behaviour, an excellent piece of work, kindness and lots more. The children are very proud when they get this award. We had a double session for our first KS2 student council meeting of 2015 such was the amount of ideas that the children wanted to discuss. Each idea was keenly debated and dissected before the council made their final decision to agree with the idea and try to promote it within the school or not. Some of the main ideas agreed upon for the school’s other stakeholders to consider were: a projector for the multipurpose room to help with P.E lessons, working sinks in every classroom, the

Sliding on the ski slope of Predeal MS. ADRIANA COCORA, PE TEACHER

On the 18th February, pupils and teachers meet in the ISB gallery to go on a very exciting ski trip to Predeal. Once they arrived at the hotel in Predeal, the students were excited to get into their rooms and see who they would be sharing the room with. After lunch we had our first ski session. Putting the boots on for the first time, and carrying the skis to the slope can be tiring and the first time is always a challenge!!! However, Ms. Adriana, Mr. Mustafa and Mr. Hasan were very impressed that all of the ISB children were dressed properly and ready to go on the slopes. The students experienced nice skiing and had great fun during the three days trip. There were different activities in the

During December I was able to take part in an intensive 2 day training course in the U.K to learn more about teaching phonics as both a spelling, writing and a reading strategy. The course has evolved after lots of research by it’s creator Debbie Hepplewhite who has devised a way of teaching phonics as a code to children. Teaching

We all had a fabulous time

evenings, including “Talent show”, “Board Games”, “Chess”, “Spoon Cards Game”, “and Twister”. At the end of the trip we had challenges like the “Cleanest Room”. On the last day some of the children were getting a little tired and their boots seemed to be getting heavier, but their attitude was fantastic! This trip is another story of their life that has been a great success and a fantastic experience for the children to segment and then blend the letters helps them develop the three key areas of communicating in English. It was good to get both the background information as to why she developed the alphabetic code but also learn more about teaching children the 51 units of sound and practical tips about helping children learn them. Of course at I.S.B we have a planned lesson each day for delivering and revising the units of sound but there are many times during the day when ‘incidental’ teaching can arise. I valued the opportunity to discuss theories with the leaders of the course and with other teachers who had also traveled from around Europe and the U.K to develop my understanding and approach to phonics. I know that this course will have a good impact

children. Whether they were a beginner, medium or advanced, all of the children listened, skied very well, had fun, made new friends, met new challenges as the snow began to get a little icy in the last day but all have shown great development! Yunus (y4), Ilayda (y4), Alexia (y4), Ali (y4), Robert (y5), Sikander (y5) and Celal (y4) pilot ‘Sputnik’ in outer space and come back to Earth as kings who are on a mission to awake ‘Sleeping Queens’. They use their skills not only to defeat dragons and knights, but also to sell their rugs in a market in ‘Marakesh’, get rid of nasty rats in ‘Rat-a- Tat- Cat’ or build amazing structures as the ‘Architecto’. The games available for this club are challenging and relaxing at the same time.They offer children a nice

ISB Debating Club recently competed in the ‘Winston Churchill Future Leaders International Schools Debating Competition’ at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Bucharest. The team competing for ISB comprised of Vlad Filip Chiorescu, Ana Anghel, Stefan Sauca and Julia Galebiewska. Despite having the youngest team in the competition, our competitors were able to secure two draws. ISB drew their match with the eventual competition winners IBSB. ISB

were eventual runners up in the Silver Plate Final and received their prizes from Ireland’s Ambassador to Romania. Gaining individual honours in the competition was Year 7 ISB student, Stefan Sauca, who was awarded

‘The Top Junior Debater Prize’ by a panel of experts. It was a great team effort by our young students and we will take that experience into our forthcoming debate fixtures with IBSB and the Christian Academy in 2015.

It’s Term 2 already and Fitness Club hasn’t lost its popularity, even though is on a Friday afternoon, after a busy week. When was the last time you heard a woman say she wanted to sweat? Fitness Club transformed the horrendous workouts into something motivating and fun. The beginning was really tough, just like all beginnings are, but once the participants got past their initial reluctance, they tend to have a more balanced approach to fitness. I like to call them Warriors, because they understood that fitness is not about looking better, it’s about being healthy. Fitness Club is a well-rounded physical activity programme which combines

Now that the days are shorter and that much darker, it is all the more appropriate that Mr. Posner’s Year 9 class have been studying the literary genre of Horror. The class has analysed Edgar Allan Poe’s uniquely disturbing vision in “The Tell-Tale Heart”, in which we discovered how the writer expressed feelings of madness and fear, together with explaining the effects this can have

on the reader. To demonstrate their writing skills, each student produced a horror story using a single point of view, to get a feeling of just how hard it is to create a “page turner”. With all of this in mind, the class has recently applied their knowledge to

Winter Arts at ISB MR. IAN MCSHANE, DRAMA / HEAD OF CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS

In December we mounted our first Arts Week. This included themed lessons, lunchtime quizzes, a concert, the Art Exhibition and the Secondary Arts Week Assembly. The week got off to a flying stop when an unnamed Creative Arts teacher (let’s call him ‘me’) organized an elaborate treasure hunt centred around all of the posters in the main school concourse. Whilst printing out the question sheets, all of these posters were taken down to make space for the Art Exhibition. Perhaps that teacher should have first consulted the Head of Creative Arts (let’s also call him ‘me’.) Anyway, the students proved much smarter and the treasure hunt was comprehensively won by Kevsar and Selda of 8B. Well done, girls. The Arts Week Assembly was a showcase of the talent across all secondary year groups, including musical performances, drama and films.

Humanities Department News

MR. ANDREW PALMER, HEAD OF HUMANITIES

The Humanities departments are very happy to welcome our new Business and Economics teacher, Mr. Ian Howgill. Mr. Howgill, who has taught all over the world including in China and Tanzania, brings with him a wealth of experience. This will be invaluable to our Key Stage 4 and 5 students as they approach the examination period. He has settled into ISB very well and has now adjusted to the temperature difference from Bali which was 300C this Christmas. He has replaced Mr. Mihai, who will be sorely missed by students and colleagues alike.

A Humanities classroom

We hope that you enjoy the pictures from Mr. Robertson’s Year 9 class which demonstrates some of the high quality work that has been done within Humanities this year. The display is on Native Americans. The department is now finalizing trips field trips for the upcoming Humanities week including visiting

the mud volcanoes near Buzau, a coastal study in Constanta, a museum trip within the city and a reservoir trip to Lake Vacaresti. Finally students are reminded that they are always welcome to join or ask for extra revision sessions during the run up to their final exams this summer.

History and Rememberance MR. IAN ROBERTSON, HISTORY TEACHER

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Year 9 History students helped in the selling of poppies to help two charities that provide practical support to ex servicemen and women who have served in the military for their respective countries. Students kindly gave up their lunchtimes and morning breaks to sell paper poppies, a symbol of the conflict of 1914-18. Students raised in excess of 1300 Lei for the Royal British Legion and the Romanian War Veteran Association. The British Embassy and Romanian Veterans sent their thanks for the sterling work of the students and praised their thoughtfulness to others. Thank you to everyone who supported the cause at ISB.

During the 19th century, where it was played among the upper-class as an after-dinner game. It has been suggested that the game was first developed by British military officers in India or South Africa who brought it back with them. A row of books was stood up along the center of the table as a net, two more books served as rackets and were used to continuously hit a golf-ball from one end of the table to the other. Early rackets were often pieces of parchment stretched upon a frame, and the sound generated in play gave the game its first nicknames of “whiff-whaff” and “ping-pong”. In the 1950s, rackets that used a rubber sheet combined with an underlying sponge layer changed the game dramatically, introducing greater spin

On Friday, 30th January 2015, ISB organized the 1st Edition of InterSchools Table Tennis Competition. 18 players, age 12 to 18, competed during the 4 hours tournament in order to go home with one of the trophies or with a medal. Winter Sports Activities MRS. INGRID STANCIU, ECA COORDINATOR

It became a tradition for ISB students to experience winter sport activities every year. Chilly, snowy days were calling our kids outdoors. Ice skating, tubing, skiing and sledging activities made a memorable day for Key Stage 3 students who went on a day trip to Predeal resort. Although skiing is the favorite activity during the winter, “there’s nothing better than gliding through the cool air on a sled” said Lidia, year 7 student.” Sledding is fun for all ages” said Ms.Bianca and Ms.Alina, who also experience winter sport activities beside the students. And “who says inflatable can only be used on the water?” said Andrei, year 9 student. On the way back to Bucharest, everyone agreed that winter sport

On the other hand, the children (and Teachers!) in Key Stage 2 were Ice Skating in Cismigiu Park between 21st and 23rd January 2015, while participating in a fun physical activity.

A new interactive course is used for Spanish lessons. It is offered by BBC and it is called Mi vida loca. Students learn how to speak Spanish with lessons, courses, audio, video and games, including the alphabet, phrases, vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, activities and more. Year 7 & 8: stART with abstract art! MS. BIANCA GAINUS, ART & DESIGN TEACHER

Student’s attraction to abstract art can be easily explained: simple shapes or playful patterns, electric and strong colors and the idea that you don’t need to master a difficult drawing method in order to obtain an interesting abstract art piece that you could proudly hang on your wall, at home. So this topic was the best to start our semester with! Now… What is abstract art, anyway? Picasso thought that there wasn’t such thing like abstract art, while some art critics take the view that all art is abstract – because no painting can be more than a brief summary (abstraction) of what the painter sees. Where’s the truth?

Well, the students had to research about and come up with their own definition about abstract art. After this we explored some interactive techniques for obtaining an abstract art piece: string & ink and asemic writing. For the first one, the students worked in pairs- and had a lot of fun because that’s an opportunity you don’t meet every day: to share the same artwork (and the work behind it!) with your favorite colleague or your best friend.

The 23rd of January 2015 was a great day for some of the 7I students. After a tiring day at school we had the chance of having fun. Together with Mrs Derya Karabulut we went on a fun adventure at Unirea Mall. It was one of the best days we ever had together with our teacher. The best part of this trip was Laser Maxx where we had two rounds of playing.

Rocks and weathering processes MR. GEORGE POPESCU, SCIENCE TEACHER

Year 8 students studied this semester the formation of rocks and investigated the weathering processes in Science. Although most people would find this topic quite boring and difficult, the students in year 8 considered it fascinating. One reason could be the large variety of interactive activities, workshops, demonstrations and projects, which helped them understand the differences between physical, chemical and biological weathering, identify the characteristics of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks, explain the rock cycle

and enhance their presentation and investigation skills. The pictures speak for themselves. During the Rock Chop Workshop ,the students used different types of chocolates to model the formation of all types of rocks. The students also made imprints in soft clay using shells of snails and oysters, then poured plaster on

top and allowed it to harden over night. The next day each student took home his own hand-made fossil. The activity helped them understand the mechanisms and conditions for forming fossils in marine environment. The students have learned about the only rock that floats on water – pumice, during the investigation of characteristics of igneous rocks.

“Year 10 has been really good so far, I really enjoy the way in which we have a lot more choice and freedom compared to previous years in the ways in which we can study. Although they are an essential part of our studies, I’m glad that Educare puts less emphasis on class work and homework marks, as results are far more important than the way you achieve them, in my opinion. Regarding the lessons, I have really been enjoying most of my courses, especially my Social Science of choice. As for the things I didn’t enjoy...well...there’s French which is far more difficult this year, but so are all the other subjects.” Valentin, Year 10B “How is life in year 10? I need to admit that we do have really funny moments sometimes an also really enjoyable.I know that in those years we need to prepare for our future jobs. So overall this year is a pretty

“Life in year 10 is very fun, even more fun than I expected. I expected that it will be hard and that I won’t understand anything. The only downside is that we get a lot of homework. There was a change this month for 11I, as due to other teaching commitments Ms. Janet Hunter was replaced by Mr. Barnaby Davis as the form tutor. It has been a smooth transition, and the students have continued to narrow their focus and concentration as the time for mock exams approaches. As aspects of this, the students have considered the role positivity and critical thinking play in achieving their potential in the IGCSE examinations. This resulted in the adoption of certain positive catch phrases, and the banning of the word ‘can’t’ to describe their abilities! The students have also been thinking about how their upcoming exams will help them in their later life, and how they can work towards their ideal professions. As part of this, most of the form group have signed up to take the Career Progression Assessment offered by Preview.

Group discussions and sharing ideas is an important part of the process

This well respected appraisal helps students to match their interests and abilities to a career path, and then offers guidance on how to achieve said career.

Setting achievable targets require focus

This includes the A level choices that would be most beneficial for each student, an area that many are starting to seriously consider.

Year 13 New Year’s Dinner CATINCA, ISB PREFECT On 18th of December we, Year 13 students, gathered at school for a special dinner; special, for it was our last Christmas spent as ISB students. It was an evening spent in chatter, laughter, the never-ending clicking of the shutter as numerous photos were taken and we were too distracted to eat. We talked about the past: silly stories from our first day in Year 10 or for some of us even earlier than that, first meetings with people we never thought we would get to know so well over the years. We laughed about the present because really, the photos wouldn’t stop and we were hungry! And we

asked about the future. We haven’t even graduated yet or said goodbye and we were already wondering when our class reunion would take place. In 5 years? Or maybe 10? It was a great dinner which turned out even better once we started sharing gifts. Because who can say no to gifts? Each and every one of

us received a present from their respective “secret” Santa. We did try to humour Mr. Ahmet, our form teacher, and keep it a secret at first, but we could only hold our curiosity for so long. We ended the evening with, of course, even more pictures because there never seemed to be enough.

The traditional ISB Alumni New Year’s Dinner was organised on the 27th December at the school. 33 alumni members who joined the event had a fantastic time. They enjoyed the delicious ISB food and shared fun memories of their school life. Board games and scavenger hunt activity brought former class mates in the same team or competing against each other again. “Alumni dinners are part of ISB’s tradition of brining former students together after years of graduating from this institution. We are extremely proud of our Year 12 student, Miss Aruna Popescu, who has achieved the highest mark in the world in Sociology from Cambridge International Examinations. Aruna attained this remarkable result in the International General Certificate of Education (IGCSE). The IGCSE examinations from Cambridge University, which take place in May/June every year, are the gold standard in academic qualifications for students aged 14 – 16 years old. The International school of Bucharest offer over 19 IGCSE’s to their students who regularly obtain grades equal to or in excess of the students in the UK.

Aruna achieved 7 A* and 1 A grade in the IGCSE examinations. She is currently studying Sociology, Economics, History and Spanish in her AS-levels and she is hoping to read Law at one of the most prestigious universities in the UK. Parents Teacher Association (PTA) invited the amazing actors from Pasee Partout Dan Puric Theatre to take us all, students, parents and teachers through a beautiful journey of winter stories. At the opening of the theatre show, the children’s choir sang songs that they have prepared together with their teachers.
