Year 5 Team

CAMBRIDGE CURRICULUM: ENGLISH – 250 MINUTES (5 LESSONS OF 50 MINUTES) GUIDED READING & PHONICS – 150 MINUTES (5 LESSONS OF 30 MINUTES) MATHS – 300 MINUTES (6 LESSONS OF 50 MINUTES) SCIENCE – 120 MINUTES (2 LESSONS OF 60 MINUTES) NATIONAL CURRICULUM OF ENGLAND AND WALES: HUMANITIES (HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, ART & DESIGN & DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY) – 150 MINUTES P.S.H.E – 50 MINUTES (INCLUDING TIME FOR CLASS COUNCIL)

Curriculum We now follow the Cambridge International Curriculum. •

English Every day. Develops all forms of communication in English (Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing.)

Maths Every day. Focuses on mental and written calculating, as well as areas such as shape and space and measurement.

Science 2 lessons a week. As a core subject. Focuses on developing scientific inquiry

Humanities: Combines History, Geography, Design Technology and Art. These are taught through a common theme, which changes every half term.

PSHE: Personal Social Health Education: We aim to teach our students about issues such as bullying, change and dealing with conflict.

ESL is provided for pupils with limited English.


Daily Routine It is important that all children arrive at school on time to line up outside the main building for 8:25am.

Assessment – tests. TEACHER ASSESSMENT (FORMATIVE) IS USED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR IN EACH LESSON. SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT ENGLISH (READING AND WRITING) – TO BE CONFIRMED MATHS – ASSESSMENTS AT THE END OF TERMS 2 AND 5 SCIENCE – ASSESSMENTS AT THE END OF EACH UNIT WRITTEN REPORTS ARE GIVEN AT THE END OF TERMS 1 AND 5. THEY WILL INCLUDE ACHIEVEMENT AND EFFORT FOR ALL SUBJECTS AND CURRICULUM LEVELS FOR ENGLISH AND MATHS.


Homework & Communication •

Each child will receive a Reading Diary. This is used for students, parents and teachers to record reading tasks. Parents should check this book on a daily basis and sign it at the end of each week.

Class teachers will communicate with parents on a weekly basis via Educare about class activities and upcoming events. Personal appointments for more serious matters can be made through the office.

Children in year 5 should spend between 45-60 minutes on homework each night which includes reading.


Assemblies and productions Assemblies Monday - Whole School Assembly Wednesday - key Stage 2 Assembly • During the Key Stage 2 assemblies parents may be invited to see different classes perform or share work relating to their topic/school work. Productions • Each year group will host a production for the parents to come and watch. Year 5 will perform this year in November. We would love to see you all there.


Uniform and Trips •

It is important that all children wear the correct school uniform. Please ensure to label/name all items of clothing. Primary – Blue school shirt, dark blue school trousers or skirt. Black/Dark shoes please. No studs allowed. On PE days, children will be expected to come to school wearing their uniform and change into a proper ISB PE kit before the lesson. Girls should not wear jewellery. • All KS2 pupils will go on an educational trip each half term. • Residential trips are compulsory and so much fun.


Clubs •

After school activities greatly enhance the curriculum. There are a wide variety to choose from for both children and parents.

Including… Academic clubs, Sports, Music, Languages, Computers, Cooking, and much more.

How to support reading at home *New Reading Diaries and Award System • Read with your child - early readers benefit from hearing good readers and this is an opportunity to share and discuss information presented in texts • Give encouragement and praise whenever your child chooses to read • Talk about characters, settings, plots and events in texts • Encourage your child to read a wide variety of texts • Encourage your child to express their opinion about texts, to justify their reactions • Encourage your child to try different ways to work out a word they don’t know • Ask questions about the text your child is reading


Reading at home with Bug club


• Every student has an account. Homework will be given out every week for Maths, English and/or Science.
