Following the Golden Rules is very important. We reward good, responsible behaviour in a number of ways, including giving Golden Time at the end of each week.

How to support reading at home *New Reading Diaries and Award System • Read with your child - early readers benefit from hearing good readers and this is an opportunity to share and discuss information presented in texts • Give encouragement and praise whenever your child chooses to read • Talk about characters, settings, plots and events in texts • Encourage your child to read a wide variety of texts • Encourage your child to express their opinion about texts, to justify their reactions • Encourage your child to try different ways to work out a word they don’t know • Discuss how the meaning of an unknown word was worked out • Ask questions about the text your child is reading

How to support writing at home *New text books and resources • Read with your child. Reading aloud helps with vocabulary • Talk about how the different ways texts are organized, e.g. recipes, comics, newspapers, stories • Provide opportunities for your child to write at home e.g. e-mails, invitations, shopping list, diary • Scrapbooks • Support spelling attempts and praise their willingness to “have a go”. Humanities and Arts Previously known as Topic. Unit 2 Ancient Egyptians
The children will use a range of different sources to find out about: What life was like for the rich and poor Egyptians Understand Hieroglyphs and the Egyptian number system How pyramids were built Mapping skills of ancient and modern Egypt
Unit 3 Invaders and Settlers
The children will find out about why people invaded and settled and how they lived in: The Roman period The Viking period The Dacia period
Unit 4 Habitats A strong link with Science. The children will: Find out about a range of different habitats Life cycles of insects and mini beasts Food chains in different climates and regions How to improve the local habitats.
PSHE • New units of work which are more specific to life in an international school.
• Unit 1: New beginnings and goal setting.
Looking at making a fresh start and looking towards the future.
• Unit 2 Dealing with difficult issues. For example
how to deal with death, illness, changes beyond your control
• Unit 3 Friendship and Bullying. This will include Anti-Bullying Week in February and will include lessons on how to be a good friend and what to do if you are bullied or witness bullying.
• Unit 4 Becoming active member of society.
This will end with the popular Enterprise Day. Lessons before hand will look at the importance of jobs and money, charity work, and rights and responsibilities.
• Unit 5 Personal well being. The focus will be on family, anti-smoking work, friendships and maturing and taking responsibility for our own action.
Science Split into 5 units, one per half term: 1. Humans and Animals (Biology) 2. States of Matter (Chemistry) 3. Electricity and Magnetism (Physics) 4. Sound (Physics) 5. Living things and the environment (Biology)
Specialists • Romanian or Turkish – 2 lessons per week (2 x 50 mins) • P.E – 2 lessons per week (2 x 50 mins) • Music – 1 lesson per week (50 mins) • ICT – 1 lesson per week (50 mins)
S.E.N and E.A.L • Cristina Guralivu and Andreea Handrea are our SEN team (Special Educational Needs). • Mariana Dutescu provides English as an Additional Language (EAL) support for Years 3 and 4.
Assessment
Teacher assessment (formative) is used throughout the year in each lesson. Summative Assessment • English and Maths assessments are currently being investigated, more information and parent workshops to follow. • Science – 1 short assessment at the end of each unit • Written reports are given at the end of terms 1 and 5. The format for report is also currently under review
Homework Homework • Given daily – should take 30-45 minutes. Emailed via educare • Reading homework – weekly. • Education City www.educationcity.com
Home-School Communciation Educare (http://educare.lumina.ro/) • Class teachers will be emailing parents on a weekly basis via educare system which provides each teacher’s email address to allow for responses. • Daily messages with homework and other information e.g. Star of the Week Reading records & meetings • Messages can also be written in home reading records. • For longer discussions, email directly to arrange an appointment or contact the primary secretary via phone or email (primary.office@isb.ro)
Late arrival & absence pro Late arrival – all children (primary and secondary) must report to the school office on arrival (in the middle of the gallery area downstairs) Absence • due to sickness, parents required to inform school office by 9:00 • requests for future absence to be made in writing to the principal Early dismissal – provide a note or phone the office explaining reason for early dismissal, parent/driver to sign early dismissal book in the office
Key Dates • Year 4 production – mid February, date to be confirmed. • Year 4 residential trip – 3 days and 2 nights, May 20-22 • Class assemblies – one per year • School trips – normally 1 per half term.
