Highlights Shared Services • Strategic and day-to-day fiscal management services to area schools/districts were expanded, optimizing resources and providing financial leadership to Allendale, Spring Lake, and Hamilton districts, as well as Wavecrest Career Academy and Innocademy. • Through the Ottawa Area Information Technology Consortium, leadership and day-to-day support services were provided for Holland, Saugatuck, Hamilton schools, and Wavecrest Career Academy.
System Stability • InQwizIT, a powerful student assessment software to support Delta Math and other learning assessment tools, was fully implemented in 2012-13 following a successful pilot study the previous year. • To optimize system functionality, OAISD staff consolidated the hosting of the Infinite Campus student information system for Allendale, Holland, and Zeeland districts, as well as Wavecrest Career Academy and the West Michigan Academy of Arts and Academics. Additionally, a special education component was launched and is currently being used in several districts.
Public Awareness • OAISD staff launched an innovative new education collaborative called Ottawa Area Schools, Doing More. Together. to showcase the high quality education taking place in local communities and ultimately impact economic develop in our region. During the 2012-13 school year, 24 business and community organizations agreed to partner with our area public and faith-based schools on this initiative. OAISD received a 2013 Communicator Award of Distinction from the International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA) for its ground-breaking pro-education Doing More. Together. website.
Student Achievement
Regional Talent Development
• The American Correctional Association (ACA) identified the Juvenile Services Center educational program as a “Best Practice” format that should be adopted by other facilities across the nation.
• Thirteen local businesses, 80 students, and 26 master teachers teamed up for the second year of the futurePREP IChallengeU Program, in which students were challenged to solve complicated, real-world issues at one of the participating businesses. In the two-week process, students learned about the inner workings of the businesses and industries that they were partnered with, earned four college credits through Grand Rapids Community College, and were awarded college scholarships.
• At Sheldon Pines School, school-wide English Language Arts (ELA) and Math benchmarking and progress monitoring assessments were implemented in order to identify where the student is performing academically. This allows teachers to differentiate instruction based on student need rather than focus solely on grade level content standards. • Ottawa Area Center was honored by the Michigan Department of Education as a “Beating the Odds” school for being one of the most successful programs in Michigan that is meeting the educational needs of students with moderate to severe cognitive impairments. • Highly customized professional development was prepared and delivered within all area school districts addressing the change in classroom instruction that will be necessary in order for students to prepare for the new level of rigor included in the Common Core. In addition, professional development for all districts focused on the new Smarter Balanced Assessment that will measure student proficiency. • An exciting new partnership with the Van Andel Education Institute located in Grand Rapids, Michigan was developed to help students across the region “think like scientists.” OAISD funding provided support for multiple local districts to participate in immersion trainings and the training of teaching staff. • The Early On and Infant Programs continued to provide a multitude of services (occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech, teaching, service coordination, teacher consultants, etc.) to over 900 children and families. In addition, Parents as Teachers served 80 families in home visits monthly and Play N Learn Literacy Groups served around 300 families throughout the county monthly. • Through the Great Start Collaborative, the OAISD launched a county-wide campaign stressing the importance of preschool; and created and implemented a joint application for Head Start preschool, Great Start Readiness Preschool, and tuition assistance preschool.
• OAISD engaged with Holland/Zeeland Model Community Initiatives, Lakeshore Advantage, and Michigan West Coast Chamber of Commerce for planning and development of a new futurePREP program called Connections which officially launched this fall. The Connections program is designed to inspire and prepare 6th-12th grade students for career success as they explore a myriad of career opportunities available in our community. • A 6,000 square foot renovation of the Careerline Tech Center Culinary Arts program was initiated to provide students with a new state-of-the-art learning facility. The renovation features a new demonstration kitchen (in lieu of a traditional classroom) with tiered seating and video monitors for optimal viewing. The renovation also created a retail outlet where customers can purchase “grab and go” food type items created by the students. • A new Solutions Development Model was implemented within M-TEC’s Corporate Training Institute. This model attracted local companies from the Fortune 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 lists with ongoing customized training requests.

Through the Doing More. Together. partnership, we are sharing real-life, and often untold, stories about our schools that demonstrate why education should be valued, and how students, community members of all ages, and businesses benefit from a strong school system right in our own marketplace and community. We invite others to share a story or two of their own about our local schools through the Doing More.
