Data from the Office of the Superintendent of Instruction (OSPI) State testing is required by Washington State (RCW 28A.230.095) and federal law. The federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), enacted in 1965, is the nation’s national education law and shows a longstanding commitment to equal opportunity for all students. On December 10, 2015 President Obama reauthorized ESEA as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). These state and federal laws result in elementary students being regularly tested by the State to assess their progress as they move through school. State tests at the elementary level which fulfill the federal Every Student Succeeds Act include the following: • Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA): English Language Arts (ELA) and Math tests (3-5) • Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS): Science test (5)

COVID-19 Pandemic In an effort to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Governor Jay Inslee ordered all schools in Washington closed as of March 17, 2020. While the initial order mandated school closures only through April 24, 2020, the order was extended to the end of the 2019-2020 school year due to increasing COVID-19 infection numbers across the state. The Issaquah School District submitted its plan for remote learning at the end of March 2020, and remote learning began for all students on Monday, April 20. Students and staff moved to an online classroom setting, using various platforms such as SeeSaw, Classlink, and Office 365. District laptops and internet hotspots were distributed to families in need, and free meals were still provided for families qualifying for the Free and Reduced Lunch program at designated pick up spots around the district daily.
Highlights Sunny Hills, which opened a new building in 2016, is a state-of-the-art facility including two gymnasiums, a multipurpose room, stage, music room, library, technology lab, kiln room, two outdoor covered play areas and a large sand field. Throughout the building, you will find the latest technology used by students and staff. We are grateful for the support of our community who has provided us this amazing place for learning! Sunny Hills serves students in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. In addition to a full range of academic subjects, all students participate weekly in library, music and physical education classes. Students have regular access to technology via laptops available in classrooms and allocated to each of our academic building wings, or our technology lab. Prior to facing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, a specialized art program was funded by our PTA. Students participated in four art lessons over the course of the school year, teaching students how to create art in a variety of mediums. We look forward to continuing to support our students’ learning and exposure to visual arts in years to come! In addition to meaningful experiences with the visual arts, at Sunny Hills we are proud of our performance arts and music programs as well. Sunny Hills has a tradition of partnering with our PTA and the City of Issaquah to support diverse and rich music experiences for our students. In previous years, we have collaborated with different guest artists who have supported our students with new learning around a variety of topics including drumming and dance. Additionally, our annual choir group has included nearly 100 4th and 5th grade students, and all 5th graders participate in our annual 5th Grade Musical. We look forward to seeing their virtual performance during the 2020-21 school year! Our diverse community is yet another point of pride at Sunny Hills. We celebrate the cultures represented by our students and staff throughout the year. While last year’s celebration was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Heritage Night has become a new tradition for our community highlighting the many cultures Sunny Hills represents. We also recognize some of the challenges and complexities
of navigating our school system and we work hard to support families from diverse backgrounds and experiences through their experience at Sunny Hills and in the Issaquah School District. We are also aware of the way that our educational institutions have historically marginalized some students and families and we are committed to identifying and addressing inequities within our own school community. Sunny Hills is committed to fostering a sense of community and belonging for all our students and families because we believe this is essential to supporting our students’ academic, personal and social growth and wellbeing.
Enrichment Opportunities
Our enrichment opportunities continue to grow. We happily hosted a variety of experiences for our students including computer programming, robotics and technology; volleyball, tennis, jogging and sports; drama and art classes; chess and gaming clubs; and language classes. Students are able to take classes, some at a cost and others for free, to support their learning and their interests.
Culture of Kindness
As you enter Sunny Hills, we hope you will feel our Culture of Kindness throughout all of your interactions. We have worked hard with students and families to integrate The Mustang Way: Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Engaged in all that we do.
Community and School Partnership
Our partnership with our PTA and with ISF remains strong. Teaming together, we have brought a variety of valuable programs to Sunny Hills.
PTA has brought us:
• Support our green efforts and our Culture of Kindness • Partnered with us to create a safe campus • Raised funds to allow for a successful implementation of our new curriculum • Sponsored important online and digital subscriptions to help our students with in-person and online learning • Close-knit teacher partnerships and volunteer support • Celebrations for our students and community engagement activities!
ISF has allowed us to:
• Build teacher capacity--funding provided by ISF supports teachers pursuing their National Boards and has provided staff with professional development for our new writing curriculum by bringing in national presenter, Matt Glover. • Our school is represented on ISF board with several board members, with even more parents serving as ISF committee members. • Support student learning through the VOICE mentor program.
State Testing Two tests given to elementary school students—The Smarter Balanced Assessment and the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science help indicate how well Issaquah students are learning.
COVID-19 Disclaimer
Due to early facility closure and suspension of end of year testing, 2019-2020 assessment data is not available. The data below relfects the school’s scores for the 2018-2019 school year.
Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA)
The SBA consists of two parts: a computer adaptive test and a performance task. Writing is included at every grade level and students are asked to solve multi-step, real-world problems in math. Performance tasks ask students to determine an array of research, writing, and problem solving skills. The SBA results describe student achievement (how much students know at the end of the year). The Grade Level Total ELA and Grade Level Total Math charts on the right-hand side of the page indicate the percent of students in third, fourth, and fifth grade who met or exceeded standard in ELA and Math on the SBA compared to the percent of students who met or exceeded standard in ELA and Math district-wide.

The WCAS fulfills the federal requirement that students100 be tested in Science once at the elementary level. The WCAS measures the level of proficiency students 80 have achieved (what students know and can do) based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The WCAS assesses all three dimensions of the 60 learning standards (Science and Engineering Practices, Disciplinary Core Ideas, and Crosscutting Concepts). The numbers on the chart represent the percentage of 40 students in grade 5 who met or exceeded standard on the NGSS compared to the percentage of students in 20 grade 5 who met or exceeded standard district-wide.
