Data from the Office of the Superintendent of Instruction (OSPI) State testing is required by Washington State (RCW 28A.230.095) and federal law. The federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), enacted in 1965, is the nation’s national education law and shows a longstanding commitment to equal opportunity for all students. On December 10, 2015 President Obama reauthorized ESEA as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). These state and federal laws result in elementary students being regularly tested by the State to assess their progress as they move through school. State tests at the elementary level which fulfill the federal Every Student Succeeds Act include the following: • Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA): English Language Arts (ELA) and Math tests (3-5) • Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS): Science test (5)

COVID-19 Pandemic In an effort to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Governor Jay Inslee ordered all schools in Washington closed as of March 17, 2020. While the initial order mandated school closures only through April 24, 2020, the order was extended to the end of the 2019-2020 school year due to increasing COVID-19 infection numbers across the state. The Issaquah School District submitted its plan for remote learning at the end of March 2020, and remote learning began for all students on Monday, April 20. Students and staff moved to an online classroom setting, using various platforms such as SeeSaw, Classlink, and Office 365. District laptops and internet hotspots were distributed to families in need, and free meals were still provided for families qualifying for the Free and Reduced Lunch program at designated pick up spots around the district daily.

Highlights We are grateful for our outstanding, supportive community. The partnership between Cascade Ridge Elementary and our PTSA provides a deep and caring commitment to the important partnership between the school and families. We kicked off the school year with the very successful PTSA Fundraiser – this year we held a GlowFest to raise money for the general PTSA budget as well as extra monies for STEAM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Students wore glow necklaces and bracelets and danced around the Café as well as many outdoor stations. It was a blast and a huge success. Our amazing community raised enough to fully fund the PTSA budget AND purchase laptops, iPads and hire an outside Art company to provide our students with a rich, unique art experience. With this substantial financial support, students also benefit from science focused guest presenters, a drama residency, virtual Science Fair, the Eager Reader program and teacher/grade level grants that allow for a variety of enrichment activities and experiences for our students and so much more. Our community gives far more than just money – they also give us time and commitment to a great education for their students. Logging hundreds of hours, no job is too big or too small for our amazing volunteers. Cascade Ridge is one of three elementary schools in the District offering a Science Technology magnet program. This program features a multi-age classroom for fourth and fifth graders that provides the standard district curricula with an emphasis on science and technology. Students use technology and its resources through engaging projects, simulations, robotics, probes and scientific investigations. Technology enhances student learning experiences daily. Every classroom is equipped with computers, a projector and document camera, and an interactive whiteboard. Many classes are equipped with student response devices (ActiVotes and ActivExpressions), with some classrooms having additional student iPads or small student laptops. Music is also a significant focus at Cascade Ridge. Led by our dynamic music team, all grade levels learn foundational music skills that build on each other each year. Typically, all students perform a grade level concert. This year because of school closures due to COVID - 19, only the 5th graders were able to put on their concert, but our amazing music staff continued to provide the students with instruction and options to further enhance our student’s musical education.

Improving Student Achievement

Staff works collaboratively on a weekly basis to plan and implement quality, rigorous curriculum aligned across the grade levels. Wednesday early release provides staff members time to work as teams, as well as a whole staff, to develop and support school improvement plans as well as delve deeper into curricula. Our new 2019-20 School Improvement Plan focuses on improving reading instruction in all grade levels. Professional development opportunities provide staff with new, innovative reading instruction ideas and on-site support staff help to implement these strategies to work toward improving reading scores for all students. Staff still receives professional development in the areas of math and writing as well. Teachers engaged in staff development and focused conversations with their colleagues around instruction and assessment to strengthen their classroom practices. The Instructional Coach (IC) provides multiple learning opportunities in individual classrooms and in formal in-service settings. Teachers work closely with the IC to model, design lessons, share instructional strategies, and reflect on their teaching in all areas. This year, when the switch was made to At-Home Learning, staff dove into technology trainings that allowed them to offer critical essential new learners to all of our students on a variety of online platforms.

Special Programs

At Cascade Ridge we are proud to host three Learning Resource Center (LRC) classrooms delivering quality education to students with special needs, as well as those needing additional academic support. Both the Learning Assistance Program (LAP) and Reading Club offer support for students who may benefit from additional help with reading. Highly capable students participate in the Primary Enrichment Program (PEP)/Special Approach to Gifted Education (SAGE) program for added academic challenge. Also, English Language Learners (ELL) benefit from quality instruction in the whole class and small groups.

Before/After School

A few of our clubs include Student Leadership, Safety Patrol, Choir, Math Club, Art classes and many other class/club offerings. We also have a wonderful before and after school child care program—Coyote Club where kids play, laugh, continue to learn and have enriching shared experiences.

What’s New

Continuing our emphasis on Kindness, we held our Kindness Week again. This year we also formed Cascade Ridge’s first Kindness Club. Members were trained to spot and reward kind acts on the playground. Sadly, due to the school closure, Kindness Club Members did not get to put their new skills to use, but they are ready to roll out the kindness in the fall! This work goes hand in hand with our Second Step Social Emotional Learning Curriculum that is implemented in every classroom. This work is supported by our Coyote Code – Be Safe, Be Kind, Do Your Job. We continued to “be green” sustaining Level 4 Green School Status for the third year in a row. Safety was a focus as we conducted “Safety Week” where we taught all emergency drills and then practiced at least one a month during the time that we were in the building. We look forward to another year of building relationships, improving our social emotional health, staying safe, being green, making academic gains and having a great time doing it all!

State Testing Two tests given to elementary school students—The Smarter Balanced Assessment and the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science help indicate how well Issaquah students are learning.

COVID-19 Disclaimer

Due to early facility closure and suspension of end of year testing, 2019-2020 assessment data is not available. The data below relfects the school’s scores for the 2018-2019 school year.

Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA)

The SBA consists of two parts: a computer adaptive test and a performance task. Writing is included at every grade level and students are asked to solve multi-step, real-world problems in math. Performance tasks ask students to determine an array of research, writing, and problem solving skills. The SBA results describe student achievement (how much students know at the end of the year). The Grade Level Total ELA and Grade Level Total Math charts on the right-hand side of the page indicate the percent of students in third, fourth, and fifth grade who met or exceeded standard in ELA and Math on the SBA compared to the percent of students who met or exceeded standard in ELA and Math district-wide.

The WCAS fulfills the federal requirement that students100 be tested in Science once at the elementary level. The WCAS measures the level of proficiency students 80 have achieved (what students know and can do) based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The WCAS assesses all three dimensions of the 60 learning standards (Science and Engineering Practices, Disciplinary Core Ideas, and Crosscutting Concepts). The numbers on the chart represent the percentage of 40 students in grade 5 who met or exceeded standard on the NGSS compared to the percentage of students in 20 grade 5 who met or exceeded standard district-wide.
