Why the executive programme

Sustainable Finance: SMEs to Large Companies

Sustainable Finance is now at the top of the agenda for the financial sector and also large, medium, and small companies. European regulation is becoming more relevant, since the European Union aims to align the financial sector with the European Green Deal, with the EU Environmental goals and with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) . The market for green financial products is also growing and presenting great challenges for funds due to the EU regulation associated with the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Refulation (SFDR), MIFID II and many other issues.

Financial Players are requested by the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) to disclose information on sustainability ‐ related issues and how they are incorporating sustainability risks in their policies and products

Banks are expected to disclose information about how they incorporate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)issues in their risk model and capital requirements

Banks will be requested to publish their Green Asset Ratio in 2024

An ESG risk analysis, both on lending and on stock selection will soon become mainstream

Starting in 2023 (in relation to 2022 year), large listed companies are requested to report how their turnover, OPEX, and CAPEX are aligned with the EU Taxonomy

Public funding from the EU will have to be aligned with the ‘do no significant harm’ regime of the EU Taxonomy, which means that companies applying for public funds will need to demonstrate how their projects do not significantly damage any of the six EU environmental goals

Green and Social Bonds are becoming an interesting financial product with a high level of demand. Not only large companies can issue these types of bonds, but SMEs can also do so

Some of the TCFD recommendations are now mandatory for large financial and non-financial companies from 2024 onwards being advised a voluntary approach for the SMEs.

Disclosure of CO2 emissions – Scope 1, 2, and 3 – will become common practice for all types of companies and large banks have commited to ask such information to their clients

Governance for sustainability and new sustainable governance models are already being created, and new capitalism business models are emerging, such as the B Corp, Social Companies, and Conscious Capitalism

Non-financial information will become strategic information for all types of investors

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive approved in 2022, brings aditional requirements to both financial and non financial companies in relation with sustainability reporting

The proposal for the Sustainable Due Diligence Diretive brings the "duty of care" to the board, since it is expected the board members to include environmental and human right issues in the decision making process and along the value chain
