A primeira cientista-astronauta portuguesa aprendeu na UA o valor da interdisciplinaridade. Ana Pires tornouse ponte entre o mundo da robótica subaquática e suas diversas aplicações nos recursos minerais e geológicos. É a primeira mulher portuguesa a concluir o Programa PoSSUM, para cientistasastronautas, com apoio da NASA. Atualmente é investigadora no ISEP/ INESC TEC, no Laboratório de Robótica e Sistemas Autónomos, e no GeoBioTec, da UA (no âmbito da Geotecnia Costeira e Portuária e Geotecnologias do Mar).

The first Portuguese astronaut /scientist learned the value of interdisciplinarity here at the UA. Ana Pires has become a bridge between the world of underwater robotics and its diverse applications in mineral and geological resources. She is the first Portuguese woman to complete the PoSSUM Program for astronaut/ scientists, with support from NASA. She is currently a researcher at ISEP / INESC TEC, at the Robotics and Autonomous Systems Laboratory, and at the GeoBioTec, of the UA (in the field of Coastal and Port Geotechnology and Geo-technologies of the Sea).

Quais os motivos que a levaram a estudar na Universidade de Aveiro?

Foi entre 2005 e 2007 que ingressei na Universidade de Aveiro, no Mestrado em Minerais e Rochas Industriais do Departamento de Geociências, com o principal objetivo de querer aprender mais sobre esta área, mas também para me especializar na área de Geotecnia.

O curso correspondeu às suas expectativas? E a Universidade de Aveiro?

O curso e a própria Universidade corresponderam a todas as minhas expectativas e ainda mais! Foi uma experiência incrível ao longo de dois anos com os docentes, as visitas de campo que fizemos... bem como diversos seminários onde tivemos a oportunidade de conhecer investigadores e especialistas na área.

O que mais a marcou na Universidade de Aveiro?

As tardes de sábado, os intervalos antes de cada aula, os momentos passados nos corredores do Departamento de Geociências e os cafés e conversas/discussões partilhadas com os colegas!

Foi a primeira portuguesa a participar num curso de formação de cientistas-astronautas apoiado pela NASA e a terminá-lo com sucesso. Sente o significado que este facto poderá ter em termos de igualdade de género, também neste campo?

Fui a primeira mulher portuguesa a completar com sucesso este curso e tenho a certeza que abri as portas para muitas mais que ficaram curiosas com este Programa PoSSUM e que vão querer descobrir mais sobre ele. Consegui ser uma das 12 selecionadas, entre centenas de candidatos, para participar neste curso no âmbito do projeto PoSSUM – Ciência Suborbital Polar na Alta Mesosfera (Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere). What reasons led you to study at the University of Aveiro?

It was between 2005 and 2007 that I did the Masters Degree in Minerals and Industrial Rocks of the Department of Geosciences, at the University of Aveiro, and my main objective was to learn more about this area, but also to specialize in the area of Geotechnics.

Did the course meet your expectations? And what about the University of Aveiro?

The course and the University itself more than lived up to all my expectations! It was an incredible experience over two years with the teachers, the field trips we went on... as well as several seminars in which we had the opportunity to meet researchers and experts in the field.

What else stood out for you at the University of Aveiro?

Saturday afternoon breaks before each class, moments spent in the corridors of the Department of Geosciences and the coffees and conversations / discussions shared with colleagues!

She was the first Portuguese person to participate in a NASA-supported training course for astronaut scientists and to successfully complete it. Do you feel how important this achievement might have in terms of gender equality, also in this field?

I was the first Portuguese woman to successfully complete this course and I am sure that I opened the door to many more who were curious about the PoSSUM Program and would like to find out more about it. I was able to be one of the 12 selected, among hundreds of candidates, to participate in this course under the PoSSUM Project - Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere. In terms of gender equality, I stress the point that I hope I have opened the door for more young women

Que caraterísticas especiais deve ter uma mulher/homem para poder ser cientista-astronauta?

Não existem requisitos especiais na seleção para o curso de Cientista-Astronauta. Penso que a principal característica no âmbito do Projecto PoSSUM cf. https://projectpossum.org/) é ter a ambição de poder contribuir para o programa com a nossa própria formação.

What special characteristics must a woman / man have in order to be a scientist-astronaut?

There are no special requirements in the selection for the Scientist-Astronaut Course. I think that the main characteristic of the PoSSUM project ( https:// projectpossum.org/) is to have the ambition to make a personal contribution to the program with our own training.

Vai continuar a formação… Onde quer chegar e o que quer fazer depois?

Não sou piloto, não sou astronauta. Esta formação concedeu-me o grau de cientista-astronauta. Com este feito, espero ter conseguido suscitar a curiosidade de muitas mais mulheres para este projeto PoSSUM, ligado ao estudo da Mesosfera e das nuvens noctilucentes, e ter aberto as portas para muitas mais percorrerem este desafio. Vou continuar a minha formação na indústria espacial. Em maio terei a oportunidade estar no Arizona a realizar os mesmos treinos que um astronauta da NASA realiza, no âmbito do Projeto Otter (cf. https://projectpossum.org/science-programs/graduate-programs/otter-courses/). Desta vez, na área da Geologia Lunar e de Marte, será uma oportunidade única de poder estar com colegas de todo o mundo, incluindo colegas e instrutores ligados à NASA. E o meu objetivo principal é, quem sabe um dia, ter um projeto relacionado com Robótica e Tecnologia, com a própria NASA. Este é o principal objetivo: trabalhar na área das Geotecnologias e Engenharia.

Will you continue your training ... Where do you want to go and what do you want to do next?

I’m not a pilot, I’m not an astronaut. This training granted me the degree of scientist-astronaut. With this achievement, I hope to have succeeded in arousing the curiosity of many more women in the PoSSUM project, which is linked to the study of the Mesosphere and the noctilucent clouds, and to open the door for many more to take up this challenge. I will continue my training in the Space Industry. In May I have been given the opportunity to stay in Arizona where I’ll be undertaking the same training that a NASA astronaut is required to do under the Otter Project (https://projectpossum.org/ science-programs/graduate-programs/otter-cours- es/). This time in the area of Lunar Geology and Mars, it will be a unique opportunity to be able to be with colleagues from all over the world, including colleagues and instructors linked to NASA. And my main goal is, maybe one day, to have a project related to Robotics and Technology, with NASA itself. This is my main objective: to work in the area of Geotechnology and Engineering.

Que competências adquiridas na UA entende terem sido fundamentais para o exercício das suas atuais atividades?

Aprendi na UA a importância da interdisciplinaridade, algo que vivenciei na formação que decorreu na Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Florida (USA), onde tive a oportunidade de estar com diversos colegas com diferentes backgrounds e skills. Esta ligação (que ainda continua viva) ao Departamento de Geociências e à UA é o resultado da influência que a formação nesta casa (que é também um Porto de Abrigo) teve na minha vida, é algo especial esta educação como Geo-profissional que foi sempre a minha base ao longo da minha vida como investigadora e engenheira!

What skills that you acquired in the UA do you consider to be vital for your current activities?

Here at the UA I learned the importance of interdisciplinarity, something that I experienced in the training program that took place at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Florida (USA), where I had the opportunity to be with several colleagues with different backgrounds and skill areas. This link (which is still ongoing) to the Department of Geosciences and the UA is the result of the influence that the education I received here (which is also a Port of Shelter) has had in my life; in fact my education as a Geo-professional is something special, and this has always been my base throughout my life as a researcher and engineer!
