BOOKREVIEW:THEINVISIBLE LIFEOFADDIELARUEBYV.E. SCHWAB
By Allegra Di Florio '27.
I love to read. Of the many books that I was considering to review, this one is by far my favorite. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a fictional stand alone novel written by V E Schwab, a prolific American author who is known for the books Vicious, Gallant, and The Shades of Magic series.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is set in France in the 1700s and in Boston in 2014 The book is structured in a way that chapters jump between time periods and locations.
She pleads for her freedom and he agrees, giving her immortality as well, with the condition that she give him her soul when she is done with life Little did Addie know that the deal she struck with Luc included two major twists: she is unable to be remembered and she can no longer leave a trace of herself Against Luc’s expectations, Addie endures these circumstances for 300 years, surviving through art. She is the muse for countless artists over time, finding a way to leave her mark through the hole in Luc’s plan. Finally in 2014, Addie meets Henry who is the first person to have ever remembered her other than Luc. When she finally tells Henry her secret, he tells her that he has one too. They develop an important relationship.
The book is structured in a way that chapters jump between time periods and locations. The novel begins in Villon-Sur-Sarthe, France, in the early 1700s with Addie LaRue, the protagonist, being set up to marry a man in her town On her wedding night, she goes against her elderly friend Estelle’s advice, and prays to the gods that answer at night, getting an answer from Luc, who is portrayed as the equivalent of the devil
On top of this, Schwab’s writing style is incredibly poetic and she uses very descriptive words in her novels, creating a magical atmosphere. Another aspect I loved about this book is the artwork exhibited throughout the novel and how it's intertwined with Addie’s story Each piece of art has a picture and a brief description, making it seem like a real piece of art.
I loved this book and would give it five out of five stars. I would definitely recommend it to those who like fiction with some mystical aspects and to those who would enjoy being sucked into a heartbreaking, powerful story This book stands out as one of my favourites for its writing, its story, its characters, and the way it made me feel
