TOWNS OF THE BERKSHIRES ADAMS, MA 01220 The town of Adams was the birthplace of famous American suffragette Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906). Until it was incorporated in 1778 and named after patriot Samuel Adams, the town was known as the East Hoosuck Plantation. Present day North Adams was a part of Adams until 1878. 2009 Resource Guide

Settled in 1750, Alford was originally part of Great Barrington, until settlers successfully petitioned for separation in 1769, and Alford, named after Col. John Alford of Charlestown, was incorporated in 1773. During the first half of the 19th century, there were a dozen marble quarries in Alford, but when the railroads bypassed the town, they became unprofitable and closed. Until 1938, Alford had its own baseball team.

TOWNS OF THE BERKSHIRES ASHLEY FALLS, MA 01222

DALTON, MA 01226

Part of Sheffield, the hamlet of Ashley Falls is noted as the home of Elizabeth “Mumbet” Freeman, one of the first slaves to be set free in Massachusetts and in the then newly formed United States of America. Cool Things in Ashley Falls: Bartholomew’s Cobble • Colonel John Ashley House

The town was named for Tristam Dalton, speaker of the State House of Representatives and the first U.S. Senator from Massachusetts. By 1829, the town was comprised of three paper mills, a gristmill, and five sawmills, all within a mile of the town meeting house. Still the largest employer in town, Crane & Company has produced all the paper on which United States Currency is printed since 1879. Cool Things in Dalton: Crane Papermaking Museum Wahconah Falls State Park • Holiday Farm

BECKET, MA 01223 Becket once prospered with lumber mills, but a flood in 1927 wiped out most of that 19th century industry. The bell in the Congregational Church (1780) was made by Paul Revere. Johnny Appleseed (aka John Chapman 1774-1845) hiked to the top of Jacob’s Ladder around 1801. Cool Things in Becket: Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival YMCA Chimney Corners Camp • Becket Arts Center

CHESHIRE, MA 01225 Cheshire was founded in the 1760’s by Baptists from Rhode Island. The town’s reputation for religious diversity continued, and in 1885 there were only 1,537 people in Cheshire but there were four different churches. The manufacture of shoes, cotton fabric and cheese were the mainstays of Cheshire’s 19th century economy. The town also boasted the first factory in western Massachusetts to manufacture cotton making machinery. Cool Things in Cheshire: Cheese Press Monument at the corner of Church and School streets Hoosac Lake (aka Cheshire Reservoir), 550 acres The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail

CLARKSBURG, MA 01247 In 1866 the Linwood Woolen Company erected a brick mill in Clarksburg to weave cashmere. The town also had three powder mills which produced $36,000 worth of black gunpowder between 1861 and 1869. The E. R. Tinker powder mill exploded in May of 1869 ending production of that product. Cool Things in Clarksburg: Clarksburg State Forest The Golden Eagle Restaurant Musterfield House 10

NORTH EGREMONT, MA 01252 SOUTH EGREMONT, MA 01258 North and South Egremont are two beautiful and distinct villages that share a common government.
