New Writer’s Group in Shefﬁeld

A nature-inspired writing group begins this winter at Bartholomew’s Cobble on the second Sunday of each month. Sessions combine outdoor walking with indoor writing. Emerging and experienced writers of poems, songs, memoirs, essays and fiction are welcome! The group will be facilitated by local writing instructor and poet Pauline Clarke with Trustees of Reservations naturalist Tammis Coffin. They will share techniques for tuning into moment and place with the senses and the imagination. Bartholomew’s Cobble is a place of great interest and beauty, with winter ducks and eagles appearing along the river, the tracks of bobcat and coyote in the fields, and some very large trees. It is registered as a National Natural Landmark for its exceptional scenic value and natural diversity. Former New York Times nature columnist Hal Borland lived

just down the road from Bartholomew’s Cobble, and many of his fine pieces of writing center around the hills, forests, fields, and river of the Weatogue Valley that this group of writers will explore. Pauline Clarke holds a Masters Degree in Writing from Vermont College. From 1990-2005, she published a column of nature related and local color essays in the Berkshire Record. She is a writing tutor and has taught writing workshops through Berkshire Community College. Tammis Coffin, M.A. has led nature-inspired writing workshops for Inkberry, The Thoreau Society, Massachusetts State Parks, and National Fish & Wildlife. ‘What’s It? Night’

At the start of every year, members of the Sheffield Historical Society take up the mantle of artifact identification, search where no one has gone for years, and seek to uncover the name and function of some highly unusual objects. Society members invite you to join them in this standout program, the annual “What’s It ?” Night, which will be held Friday, January 9, 2009, at 7:30 pm in Dewey Memorial Hall. Society member and past-president, Chris Coenen, will lead and engage the audience in its quest to identify all types of objects brought from near and far. So bring along that item that’s been sitting in your closet, on a shelf, in the garage or attic, the one you just can’t seem to figure out. What is it? How was it used? During the process of discovery, the objects are displayed on tables for all participants to view. Time is the master as audience members consider the size and shape of an item and the material it is made of in order to determine how previous members of the community once used that object as a tool or prized possession. The winner identifies the greatest number of these rare and old things. Will you be the one to grasp the purpose of each and every object? Even if you fail to identify everything (most people do), the evening always makes a fun and educational night out for friends and family.

The program as ever is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. If unfamiliar with Sheffield and its environs, Dewey Memorial Hall is the historic building located on the Sheffield Green immediately south of the Post Office. Smoking Cessation Program

Solo Performance Workshop

For those looking to kick the smoking habit once and for all, Berkshire Medical Center offers a smoking cessation program to start the New Year. The BMC program meets on consecutive Thursdays for a five-week period. The program includes the availability of nicotine replacement therapy. Preregistration for the classes is required. The classes are for any smoker who has been trying to cut down or quit altogether and can’t do it alone. The smoking cessation program at Berkshire Medical Center will be offered on Thursdays, from January 8th to February 5th from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hillcrest Campus of Berkshire Medical Center, 165 Tor Court. The program is limited to 12 participants. The cost of the program is $10 per session, unless covered by the participant’s insurance. Do you have a story that would make an interesting monologue? You can make a performance piece based on your own personal experiences in a solo performance workshop to be held Mondays, January 12, 19, 26, & February 2, 9, 16 at Barrington Stage Company, Stage 2, 36 Linden Street, in Pittsfield. Each participant will create a short solo-performance piece that will be presented informally at the final class. The course will deal with dramatic structure and writing for performance and look at other solo performance artists’ scripts as a reference tool. Open Mic Nights The Lion’s Den Pub continues its Open Mic Nights on Sundays. The event, held the first Sunday of each month, has developed into a showcase for new musical talent in the Berkshires, while providing an opportunity for emerging musicians to play live. Llama Demonstration On Wednesday, January 14 EPOCH Assisted Living hosts live llama, spinning demonstration beginning at 3 p.m. Lynne Drumm will give a spinning demonstration. Drumm’s llama will provide a living example of the wool used in sweaters, blankets and many other textiles before it is processed and spun into yarn. Drumm will describe how llamas are shorn, and how the raw wool is transformed into soft yarn used for weaving and knitting. Chapters Bookstore Welcomes Ruth Bass Chapters Bookstore will welcome author Ruth Bass to the event room on Saturday January 10, at 3PM for a reading and signing of her book Sarah’s Daughter. A career newspaper woman, Ruth Bass published her first novel, “Sarah’s Daughter,” in 2007 at the age of 72. She was born July 18, 1934 in Amherst, Massachusetts, and grew up in various New England communities. A graduate of Westfield (MA) High School and Bates College, she earned a master of science degree in journalism from Columbia University where she also received the Tennessee Williams Award for creative journalism. She has been a police reporter, newspaper feature magazine editor and Sunday editor for The Berkshire Eagle in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. She still writes a weekly column for The Eagle and one year was named by United Press International as the best columnist in New England. She is also a freelance travel writer, a member of the Society of American Travel Writers, author of ten published cookbooks and has worked as an editor at Storey Publishing Co. in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and The Independent, a twice weekly newspaper in Hillsdale, New York. She has won many prizes for writing and editing and a few years ago was inducted into the New England Newspaper Association’s Hall of Fame for her contributions to community journalism. Her first journalism experience came in sixth grade when she created a school newspaper. At Bates, she was editor of the student newspaper. She has also been a selectman in her town, a commercial bank director and a member of the town finance and health boards. She was named Woman of the Year by the Professional and Business Women’s Association of Pittsfield and is a winner of the Charles and Mary Kusik Citizenship Award in her town. Her novel is based on a tiny �� kernel of knowledge about how �� her grandmother, at the age of 14, �� faced bringing up two siblings, �� running a household, coping with her increasingly alcoholic father. “I was a Girl Scout leader for years and became aware that my scouts faced many of the same problems �� that confronted my grandmother �� in the 1880’s and decided a book �� might be in there somewhere.”

Since her grandmother did not talk about her experiences as a teenager, the book is almost entirely fictional, although its historical aspect - especially the daily life in a rural community - was carefully researched. She is married to novelist and newspaper columnist Milton Bass. Felting Workshop Open Community Meditation for the Earth Michaelene Wojtkowski, a Pittsfield native, will lead a monthly meditation/visualization for the health of the Earth on Saturday, Jan. 10th. The group will direct their energy towards mitigation of global warming, preservation of the coral reefs, melting of the icecaps, the health of the Amazon Basin, clean water, or the Health of the Earth in general. The group will work on reducing the ‘carbon footprint’ which will benefit all life and our human family. On January 12, 13, and 15 from 1-3 p.m. there will be a needle felting workshop at Knesset Israel, located at 16 Colt Road in Pittsfield. The programs each begin at 1p.m. Needle Felting, also described as painting with wool, workshop. This class will be taught by Cara Petricca -Carnevale, owner and fiber artist of Twin Hearts Handworks of Pittsfield. The classes will focus on “needle felting,” a technique used to work wool with a barbed needle and participants will complete a purse of their own design.
