I don’t really consider myself an animal lover. I like them, have had them most of my life but I think I could live without them. I espeRenee Tassone, General Manager cially could live without them ruining my house and the clean-up. I am also extremely allergic to cats and dogs so I could live without the constant sneezing, wheezing and antihistamines. There are some people I know who are just crazy about their pets. They dress them up and hold birthday parties for them and buy them presents. My sister-in-law is an animal lover. She would do anything for an animal, even rodents. I remember one time her cat had gotten ahold of a mouse; my sister-in-law nursed that mouse back to health all day. She even put the blow dryer on it to warm it up, since it was shivering. That night she placed it in a basket and put it in the bathtub so the cat could not get at it again. Unfortunately, during the night the mouse was feeling so good it climbed out of the basket towards the drain. The bathtub had a constant drip and the poor guy drowned. It was sad although I didn’t think so. I hate mice! One time I found a dead mouse under my desk at work. I was physically sick for hours, could not even go back in the building the rest of the day. I swear my sister-in-law understands animal language. She will suddenly say, wait, shhh did you hear that? I heard nothing. Then she will say that she thinks she hears an animal crying outside off in the distance. I feel that way about my beer sitting in the fridge. It is constantly crying for me. I hate when I can’t go save it, makes me sad. All of my married life (23 years) we have had German Shepherds – three of them total, and I must admit they are incredible dogs. Every time we lose one I would say “that’s it no more animals” only to find we have a new puppy three weeks later. We have lost four animals in the last two years – two of Berkshire Penny Saver

our Shepherds and two cats. I was embarrassed last week when I stopped at our Vet’s for some Frontline. The woman behind the desk said oh this must be for Hannah (our younger Shepherd). I said nope, she passed away last summer. She said ok then it must be for your cat Salem. Nope I said, she left and never returned. I see then it is for the little kitty Tux, nope wrong again. Finally, I just told her it was for Sam our newest cat. It is sad when you lose a pet. They are such a part of the family. Most of them we have buried out in the yard and one of our Shepherds, Sable’s ashes are on our living room table. Sable was very claustrophobic so we didn’t feel right burying her. We knew she would not have liked that. She could escape from any cage, kennel or room where she was confined. We once kenneled her at the Vet for a weekend. When they came in to work on Monday morning they found that she not only escaped from her personal cage but from the room where they kennel the animals, which had a locked door. They were amazed, had never seen anything like that

before and said we could not kennel her there again for liability reasons. My husband, who has had Shepherds all of his life, would never even consider having any other breed and he never liked cats at all. It is funny now to see him snuggling with our cats. He won’t admit how much he loves them. Of course, they are not the protectors that the Shepherds were, but they show him a lot of love and attention. Our first Shepherd’s name was Krista; we had her before we had our children. Actually Krista was the baby for a long time but when the real babies came along she watched over them like a hawk. Things ‘Go Bump’ at Old Sturbridge Village

Manager’s Memo continued from page 2 had for those kids. Even though our daughters used to sit on her and pull her ears, she never got upset with them. We still reminisce about her even though she has been gone for 17 years. Every day Krista and I would meet our oldest daughter at her school bus. One day when the bus driver opened the door, Krista jumped in and ran to my daughter’s seat and blocked her in and would not let her out. I was yelling at her and my daughter was pushing her body against Krista’s so that she could get out. But Krista did not budge, after about two minutes we saw why, there was a dog walking unleashed down our street. Once the strange dog was totally out of sight, Krista led our daughter off the bus. Everyone was speechless at what we had just witnessed. I like the saying “The more people I meet, the more I like my dog.” So, even though I do not consider myself an animal lover, deep down I do love having animals around the house. They are great company, even though they drive my allergies crazy. Don’t tell anyone but today I am going to pick up our new kitty. He is a surprise for my husband and a new friend for our cat, Sam. STURBRIDGE: Old Sturbridge Village’s signature Halloween event, “Things that Go Bump in the Night,” is set for 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. Saturday, October 29. The family-friendly event features the glow of 1,000 jacko-lanterns, safe trick-or-treating in the 1830s Village for younger children and a spookier “Trail of Terror” through the OSV countryside for ages 11 and up. For details, call 1-800-SEE-1830 or visit www.osv.org. Discounted advance tickets are available through October 28 for $15 per person, with children 3 and under admitted free. Tickets for the “Trail of Terror” are an additional $8. “Things That Go Bump in the Night” is usually a sell-out, so advance registration is strongly encouraged. If tickets are still available on the day of the event, they will be sold at the door for $17. This year’s “Bump in the Night,” sponsored by Country Bank, will take place rain or shine. Children can trick-or-treat at 10 different antique homes and buildings throughout the museum’s Center Village, which will be decorated with vignettes based on fairy tales and other favorite children’s stories. The elaborate decorations will include some mildly spooky haunted scenes, but will have an appropriate spookiness level suitable for young children. Visitors can also enjoy Spooky Storytelling, a shadow puppet show based on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Andrea Caspari, a show by Lucky Bob the Comedic Juggler, psychic readings by Gary McKinstry and various games. Food and beverages, including cider donuts and hot cider, will be available throughout the evening. In contrast to the milder child-friendly activities around the Old

Sturbridge Village Common, the “Trail of Terror” will not be for the faint of heart. The route for the guided haunted walk goes out into the village countryside and through the covered bridge, and is designed for adults, teens, and tweens (ages 11 and up) who are looking for a scarier, more hair-raising experience. Old Sturbridge Village celebrates life in early New England from 1790 – 1840. Located just off the Massachusetts Turnpike and Routes I-84 and 20 in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, OSV is open year-round, but days and hours vary seasonally. Currently, the village is open seven days a week from 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Admission is $20 for adults; $18 for seniors; $7 for children ages 3-17; children under 3 are admitted free. Enjoy the Majesty of Fall The Arbor Day Foundation will brighten up your fall by giving you 10 free autumn classics trees when you join the organization in October. The free trees are part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation’s Trees for America campaign, a program dedicated to environmental stewardship through the planting of trees. Everyone who joins the Arbor Day Foundation in October will receive 10 free autumn classics: Two sugar maples, two red maples, a scarlet oak, a sweetgum, northern red oak, silver maple, white flowering dogwood, and Washington hawthorn. “You’ll especially enjoy these trees for years to come during the autumn months because they’ll add abundant, vibrant color to any yard or landscape,” said John Rosenow, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between November 1 and December 10. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. Ten Fall Color and Decorating Trends By Ceil Petrucelli Fall is the time of year for warm, rich, deep and cozy colors. The fall color palette this year features hues of chocolate brown, espresso, and golden yellow to deep red, burnt orange, dark mossy green and eggplant. Many colors are combined together in fabrics that feature stripes, paisleys, and geometric patterns. To offset some of the deeper tones, designers are combining darker colors with lighter ones or combining them with complementary colors in bright, vibrant tones. Animal skin prints have also become very popular in the past couple of years and that trend is continuing. Here are some of the popular color trends that are being featured by designers, fabric and wallpaper companies, paint companies, and the always popular “shelter” magazines such as House Beautiful, Traditional Home, Architectural Digest, Veranda, Elle Décor, and Martha Stewart Living. 1. Bronze - a burnished bronze will give a room a more formal

feeling. An aged or oiled bronze will be a little more casual or rustic. Bronze can be used as an accent with accessories, lighting, or even as a subtle metallic painted finish on a ceiling. 2. Copper - burnished copper is also being used as an accent and can be combined with any number of colors. I recently saw an accent wall done in a burnished copper faux finish and it was used as a backdrop for an antique tapestry which had a black woven border. The effect was stunning. Copper can also be aged to a verdigris finish for that old world look. You can also find pots, planters, chandeliers, lamps, and even lampshades in copper. 3. Neutrals - neutrals don’t have to be boring! They are the backbone of every long lasting and classic room design. Neutrals can be spiced up with the addition of bold colors, bright accents, textures, and rooms can be changed seasonally. A beige sofa? continued on page 14

Add a textured throw with a mix of browns, greens and oranges to cozy things up. 4. Animal Prints - these have always been a favorite with designers and used judiciously, can really add some pop to a fairly traditional room. Think about using an animal print area rug in a family room for a unique twist. They look great with leather sofas and chairs. Or add a couple of throw pillows in a zebra or leopard print to jazz up a plain brown or beige sofa. I recently saw a room with a pair of ottomans covered in a leopard print chenille fabric and the same fabric was used to make a throw pillow for a comfy chair. It helped to tie things together and gave the room a new, contemporary look. 5. Deep Red and Burnt Orange - have always been two of my favorite colors, especially as accents with neutrals. You can combine them with dark chocolate brown or a deep mossy green to tone it down a little. One of my favorite fabrics is a paisley which combines reds, oranges, browns, dark green, golds, and black. Think about a living room with a chocolate brown sofa, neutral walls, then pops of color with a chair in a

stripe or paisley, and window treatments in a textured fabric using beige combined with reds, oranges, and browns. 6. Deep Purple - think eggplant or aubergine. Purples are making a comeback and are being featured in many decorating magazines. I’ve seen it paired with a deep mossy green, pumpkin orange, and charcoal gray in a stunning dining room with a traditional cherry table and chairs upholstered in a fabric that combined these colors with a light silver grey. The chandelier was a brushed nickel, and the table top accents had touches of silver and amethyst. The drapes were an elegant silk plaid which combined purple with moss green, light gray and orange on a cream background. Not fond of purple? Then try wine, or a deep reddish purple instead. 7. Rich Browns - think chocolate, espresso, coffee, milk chocolate, caramel, maple syrup, that favorite leather chair. Brown can be combined with so many other colors and it adds so much richness to a room’s color scheme. You can do a room with chocolate brown walls, light

Add some fabrics (window treatments or pillows) which combine the colors, and you have a fall-inspired room that will look great year-round. 8. Asparagus and Pumpkin - I’m sensing a food theme here. A lot of color inspiration seems to be coming from the natural world. The “new green” that is gaining popularity is a fresher asparagus green. Clearer, brighter, not as gray as sage, not as muddy as moss. Deeper than grass green. It pairs well with pumpkin and other shades of orange, as well a wood tones, browns, and yellows. It also looks great with white. 9. Mushroom or Greige - not quite brown, not quite grey, not quite beige. It’s the new neutral that pairs well with many different color palettes. I saw a living room recently with mushroom colored sofas in a micro-suede fabric, very clean contemporary lines. The walls were painted in a lighter shade of gray-beige. Coffee table and end tables were in ebony. Wood floors with an accent rug in a geometric pattern in shades of black, gray and brown. All very neutral. Then pops of color with accents in reds, oranges, and greens which were pulled from the owner’s collection of art and photography. 10. Deep Teal - last year’s color of the year was turquoise, which I happen to love. But a deeper shade of turquoise, a deep teal, has become

popular lately as we move into fall and winter. Teal is a gorgeous color which can be combined with brown for an elegant look. Or how about a Southwestern color scheme using teal combined with reds, black, terra cotta, and neutrals inspired by desert sands? Deep teal combined with lighter shades of blue-green could be relaxing for a bedroom or bathroom. One of my favorite fabrics is a beautiful paisley which combines shades of teal with cream, chocolate brown, with a few touches of red and orange for contrast. I used it for a shower curtain and window treatment in a traditional bathroom; then used it again in a breakfast nook for cushions and pillows accented with chocolate brown. For inspiration and ideas, there are lots of resources available, including books, magazines, on-line decorating sites, furniture stores, art galleries, and various TV shows. Happy decorating!
