Manager’s Memo Last week I attended my 25th high school reunion. I graduated from Bartlett High School, which was located in Webster, Massachusetts, just South of Worcester. Our class coordinated and hosted the reunion but we invited anyone (students, teachers and administrators) from any class in the same decade, it was a huge 80s bash. It was a great idea (wish I thought of it) to invite Renee Tassone, General Manager the other classes, it made for a much larger turnout. There were about 250 people that showed up for the event, 70 or so were from our graduating class in which we had 150 graduates back in 1986. The reunion took place at an outdoor club, picnic style. Of course I had to bring my own food and drinks, but people said the burgers and dogs were very good. They had great 80s music playing, it was all very casual and a lot of fun. There are eight kids in my family, all born within 10 years so this was more of a family reunion for us. It was nice to see my brothers and sisters for something other than a holiday. It is always a scary thing to know you are going to see people you haven’t seen in a long time. I not only had to worry about knowing people’s names ■

from my class but from all of the classes within a decade. Even nametags did not help. One of my best friend’s brother came up to me and gave me a big hug and I had no idea it was him. I always remember him as her little brother and now he is all grown up. Another fellow schoolmate came up to me and was angry that I have not befriended him on Facebook after his numerous requests. I don’t even remember him and I barely ever go on Facebook. In high school we had a core group of friends and we were always together. I remembered them and they all looked great. It was so nice to see them again. We picked up right where we left off like we had just seen each other. We reminisced about all of the good times we had and all of the trouble we caused. They reminded me how I used to purposely rub poison ivy on myself hoping to get a rash so I would not have to go to school, smoking in the girls room and the numerous times I ended up in detention or the principal’s office. One time I remember going to see our basketball team play at a Catholic School in Worcester. The home team was not very friendly towards us, so I decided at the end of the game to tear down a decorated sheet they had hanging on the gym wall to show their team support. I didn’t think anyone would notice that it was missing but the whole place went quiet when they heard the loud tear of the sheet. Our coaches had to whisk me on the team bus because they feared for my life. The next day my mother and I drove to the Catholic School with brand new sheets in hand and I apologized to the head administrators of the school. Another time in 6th grade a boyfriend and I decided to leave the school for lunch. I didn’t realize you could not just leave school when you are in 6th grade without telling anyone. I honestly didn’t think anyone would notice we were gone. It was less than an hour when we returned to the school to find my parents and every local policeman searching the school for us. My mother said I was the cause of her grey hair. People always have mixed reviews about attending class reunions. They

can be awkward; it is always hard to make conversations with people you haven’t seen or spoken to in a long time. Sometimes it is good to step out of your comfort zone, go and just have a good time. These are people you spent the majority of your youth with and sometimes it is fun to go back and think about those times. Hopefully, when you think back to your youth it puts a big smile on your face. It does for me, even though most of those memories were of me getting into trouble. A sign that I have hanging up in my office that was given to me from one of my co-workers sums it up perfectly. “A good friend will come and bail you out of jail...But a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, damn...that was fun!” That is what it is like at work for me, just like high school, we are all having a lot of fun. It is important to have fun and not take life too seriously. Next time you get that invitation for your class reunion, make it a point to go. Take the opportunity to laugh and catch up with your old high school friends, you will be glad you did. Happy 250th anniversary to Great Barrington! Check out the special anniversary section inside. Next month we will be celebrating Lee Founder’s Day. Remember, please tell our advertisers you saw their ad in the Yankee Shopper and Berkshire Pennysaver. As always we encourage your feedback. Yarmosky Pediatric Dentistry

Yarmosky Pediatric Dentistry, with offices in Pittsfield and Great Barrington, boasts a team of dental specialists committed to making a trip to the dentist a positive experience for all children, beginning at age one. Dr. Louis Yarmosky came to the Berkshires after graduating from Boston University with an advanced degree in Pediatric Dentistry in 1973. About seven years later Dr. Steven Yarmosky, Dr. Louis’s brother, joined the practice after receiving his specialty degree in Pediatric Dentistry 1980. In 2009, Dr. Lauren Ballinger also a Pediatric Dental Specialist and Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry joined the practice. Dr. Lauren is also the daughter of Dr. Louis and the niece of Dr. Steven. The American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics have recently changed their guidelines and now recommend all children see a dentist by age one and establish a “Dental Home.” The new guideline which changed the age from age 3 to age 1, ensures that all children receive preventive and educational dental care in attempt to prevent dental disease, rather than a child’s first trip to the dentist be a result of a full-blown dental problem. It also provides family’s with a dental practice that can be used as a resource for questions about dental development, disease prevention and trauma care. Yarmosky Pediatric Dentistry is proud to be a leader in the “Dental Home” concept and is on the cutting edge of current recommended guidelines regarding the best dental practices and treatments for children of all ages. Yarmosky Pediatric dentistry offers convenient office hours as well as having at least one doctor on call for emergencies at all times. Orthodontic care is also provided at Yarmosky Pediatric Dentistry. As Pediatric Dental Specialists, the team at Yarmosky Pediatric Dentistry are experts at diagnosing and treating the growth and development needs of children and adolescents . At each 6 month dental well-visit, every child receives an orthodontic and growth and development evaluation. The American Academy of Orthodontists and The American Dental Association recommend that all children receive an orthodontic evaluation at age 7. Early treatment is often appropriate in the younger years of 7, 8 9 because orthodontic problems can be better corrected in this growth period as opposed to waiting until the child is older and the problem has become more complex. In other cases, full orthodontic care, when all the permanent teeth are in, is still appropriate. Either way, Yarmosky Pediatric Dentistry has the knowledge and expertise to provide children with beautiful and functional smiles in a comprehensive and child-centered dental environment. Yarmosky Pediatric Dentistry’s practice is limited to the treatment of infants, children, teens and those with special needs. They are not only a team of committed Pediatric Dental Specialists, but are also proud to be working as a family with a common goal to provide the best dental care possible to children and their families in the area.
