When the southern part of Tyringham became a separate town during the Mexican War, patriotic selectmen wished to name it in commemoration of battles in Mexico and Texas, but Palo Alto and Buena Vista were too foreign-sounding. Today it is heavily forested and there is little evidence that this was also one of the most prosperous towns in the county. In the mid-19th century Sandisfield boasted six saw mills, four smaller mills, four blacksmith shops, two chair shops, a bedstead shop, a wheelwright’s shop, a shingle mill, a tannery, and a silk mill. The oldest town in Berkshire County, Sheffield was purchased from Chief Konkapot and other Stockbridge Indians in 1724 for 460 pounds Sterling, three barrels of cider, and 30 quarts of rum. Comprised of two villages, Sheffield and Ashley Falls, today much of the township remains open and in agricultural production. Cool Things in Sheffield: Berkshire Choral Festival

STOCKBRIDGE, MA 01262 The town was incorporated and named Stockbridge in 1739. The Mahican Indians had called it W-nahkta-kook, the Great Meadow, and when it was given to them as a grant by the Massachusetts General Court, it became known as Indian Town. WASHINGTON, MA 01223 The town was first called Washington, after the first president, when it became a town in 1784. It had previously been known as Greenoch, Watsontown, and Hartwood. A stage route traversed the mountainous west section of town before the Pontoosuc Turnpike was built in 1830 through the valley on the east side of town. Cool Things in Washington: Coles Brook Farm • Bucksteep Manor

WEST STOCKBRIDGE, MA 01266 Queensborough, later West Stockbridge, was assembled from part of Indiantown (Stockbridge) and the “Gore”, a long border section disputed with the colony of New York. Much of the marble used to build the State House in Boston and the old City Hall in New York came from West Stockbridge quarries.
