Army Reserve PFC Ashlee H. Bassett has graduated from the Plumber Utilities Apprentice Course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas. The course is designed to train students to install, maintain and repair exterior and interior pipe systems, which include water, steam, gas and waste lines as plumbers and pipe fitters. Students are trained to read, interpret and plan layouts of pipe systems using blueprints; bend, cut and thread lead, copper, and plastic pipes; install connectors, fittings, joints, and appropriate plumbing fixtures; and proper use of maintenance tools, equipment and materials. She is the daughter of Bernadette C. and Dave Belden of Hillspond Road, Whitehall, New York. Bassett is a 2007 graduate of Whitehall High School. Air Force Airman First Class Kyle D. Cozzens graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He earned distinction as an honor graduate. Cozzens is the son of Michael and Karen Cozzens of East St., Fort Edward, New York. Telly’s TAKE ■ From Corporate to Watercolors By Telly Halkias

For local watercolorist Tony Conner, painting was a hobby since elementary school. Yet he missed out on formal art education in college. So he ventured forth to learn on his own, beginning a process of selfstudy that continues to this day. While a corporate sales and marketing executive, Conner began to carve out time years ago to set about the task of becoming a full-time artist. Conner dedicated a few hours before work and at the end of the day to study and paint. After relocating several times, in 1989 he settled in Bennington and commuted to Albany, New York daily for work. Just two years later, he landed his first entry to a juried art show. Finally, in 2003, Conner accepted an early retirement package. Leaving the corporate world, he dedicated himself fulltime to his painting. But perhaps Conner’s most telling transformation as an artist is personal. Over time he’s learned to exit his cocoon of rigor and discipline, a proven method which transforms his inspiration into art. “My drive for technical perfection, which is one of my strengths and a carryover from my business years, was also my downfall at times,” Conner said. “I was

harshly self-critical of my work, often causing extended periods of creative block.” “But after I started receiving feedback from folks who saw my art, and from those who bought the paintings, I was humbled to learn what powerful emotions art invokes from the man-in-thestreet,” he said. “In the end, most people appreciate beauty over brushstroke.”

Hinsdale Lions Club

The Hinsdale Lions Club will hold a Craft Fair at the Community Building on Route 143, Hinsdale, Massachusetts, on November 7, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and November 8, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the many Lions charitable causes. Admission is free. Vendors will offer hand-knit and crocheted items, baby clothes, holiday decorations, candles, jewelry, Avon products and much more. — by Susan J. Coons ...way to go... Last Tuesday afternoon I returned from Naples, Florida, after spending eight days in the sand, sun and water. I stayed with my son who prepared several gourmet dinners, such as pan-seared sesame seed tuna steak with creamy ginger sauce, stir-fried vegetables julienne, brown fried rice, and a dessert with brandied seared bananas over vanilla ice cream. What scrumptious delights! I met a spiritual Zen healer (a friend of my son) who teaches Zen and acupressure and has a practice that reaches across the country. From just a 20 minute observation of me as I interacted with him, his wife and

my son, he was able to tell me things about myself regarding my health, outlook, sleep habits and more. It’s very difficult to describe what he does, but I’ve felt relaxed since his acupressure treatment. I need to practice what I learned now that I’m home and in my old routine (which I’m trying to break). We always take one trip to the Lani Kai in Fort Myers, which is probably the seediest hotel on the west coast of Florida. So seedy that it’s campy. Bathrooms are filthy. Never use them. The drinks are good and so are the hot dogs! This time we had lunch on the top deck. It was actually nice up there. Still a seedy bar, but we ate outside and it was nice. It was another experience to remember and I’m certain we’ll do it again. If any of you have experienced the Lani Kai, let’s talk! It’s now a hot place for spring break. John’s phone never stopped ringing. He takes and makes his business calls while he’s lounging at the beach! What a life! Which brings up something I’ve been pondering... I’m trying to find a way to convince my boss that I can work on the papers as easily from Naples, Florida as Bennington and Manchester, Vermont! I was thinking February and March. What do you think?? I would be able to keep you up to date on the warm weather, water temperature, latest golf and tennis results at the various country clubs, and a little of the night life at Harold’s, Dirty Larry’s or The Real McCaw. I’ll have to work on this...

Washington County Historical Society

The Mills on the Battenkill will be the subject of a talk by Sally Brillon on Tuesday, November 10 at 7 p.m. A discussion and slide presentation will include mill locations and their founders, types of mills and their construction along the Battenkill, their products and output, and mill history, changes, and preservation during the late 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Free Skate at Riley Rink to Promote Making Good Choices

Bennington and Manchester, VT - United Counseling Service is sponsoring a free skate at Riley Rink that includes great giveaways, games, and lots of fun. Co-sponsoring organizations include The Collaborative, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Southshire Substance Abuse Coalition, and DuFour Tours. Friday, November 6, students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will be admitted free of charge to skate at Riley Rink in Manchester from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. Middle school students from any school in Bennington County and adjacent areas will be admitted for the free program. Skate rentals are not included. Students will be asked to provide a school ID except for 6th graders. “This is a Refuse to Use makeup event for students in the Refuse to Use Program,” The Collaborative Director Jennifer Flannery said. “We’ll have several games going to reinforce good choices and healthy behaviors.” “At UCS, we treat people with substance abuse problems,” Community Relations Director Robert Pini said. “But preventing substance abuse in the first place is our goal.” The free skate is one of a series of events that offers area youth a healthy, substance-free social alternative. Music to Stir the Soul

On Sunday November 8 at 3 p.m., organist Donald McMahon and percussionists Taryn Reese and Robert Vacca will perform a recital at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church, 238 West Main Street, Bennington, Vermont Music by Aaron Copland, Dvorak, Wagner, Verdi, Bach, early French composers and more will be presented by the artists. Williamstown Mountain Film Festival

The 9th Annual Williamstown Mountain Film Festival will be held November 6 and 7 from 7 to 10 p.m. at 62 Center on the William’s College Campus. Admission is free, with different films to be featured on both nights. Featured films will have a mountain and adventure based theme. A total of 16 films will be shown over the two evenings. Films range in length from two to forty minutes. Submissions came from as far away as Japan and as close as New York City. “Revolution One” features athletes on mountain unicycles executing the most amazing feats. “Poor Man’s Helicopter,” filmed in the Jackson Hole back-country, combines big mountain skiing with paragliding. All cinematography for this film was taken from a two-man team flying on a paraglider. Mountaineering in Patagonia and India, rock climbing in eastern Germany, and kayaking in China and Africa round out the films. Food Drive at Hoosick Youth & Community Center

During the month of November, the Hoosick Youth & Community Center and MentorWorks, the Hoosick Falls mentoring program, will be conducting a food drive to assist the local food pantry. Collection bins for non-perishable food items (canned goods, pasta, dinner mixes) and personal hygiene products (shampoo, soap, deodorant, diapers) will be placed in the upstairs lobby and near the rear door for those wishing to make a donation. Gift certificates and monetary donations will also be accepted and will be used to purchase additional items. Students in the after-school and mentoring programs are asked to bring a few items with them when they come to the Youth Center, Church Street, Hoosick Falls, New York, to support this effort. Participants in the youth basketball program, which begins the first Saturday in November, are also asked to help. These are difficult times for many families in the community. Berkshire Writers’ Room Annual Meeting

The Berkshire Writers’ Room will be having its Annual Membership Meeting on Wednesday, November 4 at 7 p.m. in the Susan B. Anthony Lounge at Berkshire Community College. The meeting is free and open to BWR members and to the general public. ‘When in Rome’ Lecture Explores the Age of the Popes Examine artistic and architectural accomplishments witnessed in Rome through the grand patronage of legendary popes during the next “When in Rome” lecture on Thursday, November 5 at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. The lecture series, led by Clark staff, is a complement to the fall exhibition “Steps off the Beaten Path: NineteenthCentury Photographs of Rome and Its Environs.” Registration is not required but can be made by calling 413-458 0489. Cost is $8 per class ($5 for members and free of charge for college students). Lectures are held on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. The Eternal City endured in the centuries following the collapse of the Roman Empire and flourished from the Renaissance until the establishment of the Italian state in the late nineteenth century, all under the leadership of the papacy. Assistant deputy director Tom Loughman will examine the patronage of Julius II delle Rovere and Clement VII Medici (sponsors of Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bramante) as well as Urban VIII Barberini and Innocent X Pamphilj (patrons of Bernini, Borromini, and Velazquez). He will also discuss the influence of lesser-known popes who were behind new monuments such as the Trevi Fountain and the restora-

tion of ancient ones including the Colosseum. The remaining lecture in the series features “Rome: The Foreign Academies” on November 12 with Richard Rand, senior curator and curator of paintings and sculpture. Technical innovations, artistic daring, and shifting socio-political circumstances led to a dramatic change in the photography of Rome in the late nineteenth century. Photographers of the Eternal City began to capture everyday scenes alongside ancient ruins, Baroque churches, and back-streets, all of which industrialization was rapidly transforming. Through the 100 images in “Steps off the Beaten Path,” viewers today can step into a Rome that was about to step out of the pre-industrial age. The exhibition is on view at the Clark through January 3, 2010. The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (open daily in July and August). Admission June 1 through October 31 is $12.50 for adults, free for children 18 and younger, members, and students with valid ID. Admission is free November through May. Arlington Area Childcare Receives Grants to Support Artists’ Residencies Arlington Area Childcare recently received grants from the Vermont Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, LEGO Children’s Fund and the Stratton Foundation to fund a year-long residency, “Art and Sculpture in the Natural Environment.” Kim Ray will work with the infants through preschoolers at Happy Days Playschool, while the school-age program at Happy Days hosts James Florschutz in a residency of the same type. In the residency with Kim Ray, nature and the environment will become the focus for creating sculptures and will complement the outdoor classroom experiences provided for all of the children at Happy Days. Kim will visit the center from the fall of 2009 through the summer of 2010 during each of the four seasons. She will build on the works of British sculptor, Andy Goldsworthy, using flowers, rocks, leaves, mud, pine cones, icicles, twigs, snow, water, trees and other natural materials. James Florschutz uses wood and stone often combined with other materials, both natural and man-made to create sculptures that relate to a specific site or location. He will be working with the school-age students at Happy Days Playschool in the summer of 2010. His residency will also complement the outdoor classroom activities that are provided by the school-age teachers. Student’s artwork or photographs of the work created through their explorations with nature art and sculpture will be on display at the Canfield Library Gallery located at Martha Canfield Library in Arlington during the month of February 2010. Awards are Announced for the National Fine Art Competition in Bennington

The fine art show, which opened in mid-September, was juried by nationally renowned artist Albert Handell. A few hundred submissions were considered, with the artist deeming just over sixty appropriate for the show. During Handell’s recent trip to Vermont from his home in New Mexico he was able to select the award winners in person. “We have been so appreciative of Mr. Handell’s involvement in this competition. He is such a highly-respected artist - having him come and choose the award winners in person was very important to all of us,” said Gallery Director Shirley Hutchins.

The recipient of the first place Award and $4,000 was New York state artist James Coe. Mr. Handell was looking not only for technical excellence and great composition, but for work that captured the feel and atmosphere of the place or scene and he felt that Coe’s piece did this. Actually, two of Coe’s pieces were award winners with his painting “The Yellow Farm House” receiving third honorable mention. A figurative painting entitled “Charles” by Paula Holland received Second Place and $2,000 and a colored pencil piece, “Hay Wagon”, by Douglas Gillette of Connecticut won third place and $1,000. When show details were decided upon these three awards were the only ones that were to be selected. After seeing the show Mr. Handell felt more artwork was deserving of special recognition and so it was decided that four additional pieces would be awarded honorable mention awards: first honorable mention, Marjery Jennings for “Into the Wild”; second, Peter Seltzer, “The Colors of Culture”; third, James Coe, “The Yellow Farm House”; fourth, Cindy House for “Spring Stream”. Pittsﬁeld Designated BioReady Community Mayor James M. Ruberto announced today that the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council has certified the City of Pittsfield as a BioReady Community. Through cooperation with the Department of Community Development and the Pittsfield Economic Development Authority, the city has met multiple criteria in order to receive a Gold Rating from the Massachusetts Biotechnological Council. “This certification is an endorsement of the accomplishments of PEDA in bringing several parcels to shovel ready status as well as recognition that the city is open for business and has the assets biotechnology companies are looking for when siting new businesses in the Commonwealth,” said Mayor Ruberto. On Saturday, December 5, the Grafton Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will host a snowmobile safety course for young people ages 10 to 18. French Language Courses

Misty Valley Books in Chester, Vermont, will again offer two levels of French classes beginning the week of November 9. The Learn French courses will run for six weeks, Level II on Mondays, beginning November 9, and Level I on Tuesdays, beginning November 10. Both courses are open to students high school age and older and will meet in the bookstore from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Instructor for the courses is Bill Reed, co-proprietor with his wife, Lynne, of Misty Valley Books, on the Chester Green next to the Fullerton Inn. A graduate of Yale University, he has taught in Africa, France and, for more than 35 years, in public and private schools and colleges in Vermont. Both courses will rely on films, games and songs in an approach that is lighthearted and conversational. Casting for Recovery Receives Beneﬁt

The TriState Pennysaver News and the Vermont News Guide ran a special section on October 21 and 28th, for Breast Cancer Awareness. Historic House Now in Compliance

In 1948 Dorothy Canfield and her husband John Fisher deeded Arlington Community House to the newly formed Arlington Community Club, Inc., with the stipulation that the club use the building to provide meeting rooms for all citizens of the Arlington, Sunderland, and Sandgate communities, and also provide space for the Martha Canfield Free Library. For over 60 years, the Community House in Arlington’s Historic District has been in the care of the Arlington Community Club. With the advancing age of the house, built in 1829, major renovation and maintenance have been required and carried out over the years. In the spring of this year, the serious issue of meeting Vermont state fire code safety standards could not be set aside. The remedy of this violation was driven by the building’s two residential apartments, plus monthly and daily use by many town groups and organizations. Meetings took place with the state fire marshall and division of fire safety offices, architects, engineers, electricians, town representatives, and others. Work finally began in July and was completed in October, according to Ken Nicholson, president of ACC. The required work included upgrade of the old or faulty wiring including additional circuitry; fire-safe doors and fire-safe egress via replacement windows for the residences; and installation of a fire alarm system, now tied in to a monitoring company. Certification of compliance from the VT Division of Fire Safety was received in September. The ACC is grateful to all professionals involved in these critical renovations, including Centerline Architects; Novotny Electric; Preston Niles & Scott Racicot of Bennington Builders; the state Fire Marshall’s Office; Atlantic Sprinkler and Countryside Alarm; Miles Lumber. “Finally, but importantly,” said Nicholson, “we are most appreciative to all those who responded to this summer’s fundraising effort with financial support of this project. This effort allowed us to reach this immediate goal, but our long range plan remains to renovate the Burdett Room and the Library book sale room and landscape the grounds.
