The Hoosick Falls Central School Drama Club proudly presents a night of comedy: Stephen Gregg’s one-act “This is a Test,” and Neil Simon’s “Rumors.” The two shows will be performed back to back, and will run from Friday, December 4 to Sunday, December 6. The Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7 p.m., while the Sunday matinee begins at 2 p.m. Thanks to the support of the HFCS board and administration, admission is free. The first show of the night, “This is a Test,” is an outrageously funny take on one student’s disastrous experience with something we can all appreciate — taking a test. The frazzled student, having already stayed up all night (too distracted to actually study) gets more than she bargained for in this classic one-act play. “Rumors” is one of the most famous and widely performed shows by the award winning American playwright Neil Simon (“Fools,” “The Odd Couple,” and “Lost in Yonkers”). Do we need a public health care “option” or even a national singlepayer health care plan? As a self-employed person facing the task of choosing my health care plan for 2010, let me cut through the abstract theories and offer 14,721 reasons why we do: that’s the number of dollars that I would have to pay in premiums next year to get a BC/BS Vermont Freedom plan for me and my wife. It doesn’t count the $1,500 deductible, and it doesn’t count the various co-pays for office visits, prescription drugs, and the like. To put that in perspective, the premium plus deductible ($16,221) is the equivalent of the annual gross pay for a full time job with wages of $7.80 per hour. That’s gross pay, not net pay. The premium will, of course, go up next year. And the year after that. And the year after that. What reasonable person can dispute that the health care system in this country is now a literal disaster? What reasonable person can dispute that fewer people each year are able to afford this kind of expense? Something must be done. The entire civilized world offers itself as evidence that public health care can help bring down the cost. What do we have to lose by at least trying it, other than the constant drumbeat of scare theories and propaganda from the very people who profit most from our current, broken system? — Lee Russ, Bennington, Vermont ________________________________________________

Christmas Tea and Bazaar at Grace Christian School

Grace Christian School (located across from the K-Mart Plaza in Bennington) will be hosting its 3rd annual Christmas Tea and Bazaar on Saturday, December 5. The bazaar is from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., with items from various vendors (such as Avon, Tastefully Simple, Silpada Jewelry, as well as many others) along with many vendors with handcrafted items. The Christmas Tea and walkthrough Nativity will be available from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. This will feature live music for your listening enjoyment, delectable goodies and approximately 100 nativities on display! This “careening joyride” of a novel looks at the lives of five high school girls in a gritty blue-collar town in upstate New York during the 1950s. They form a gang dedicated to female pride, power, and vengeance on a world ready to denigrate and destroy them. Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

The Department of Community Development Parks and Recreation Program in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, has announced that the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held at Park Square on Friday, December 4 at 6:00 p.m. The Taconic High School Chorus will perform a variety of carols. Santa Claus will arrive following the tree lighting and free hot chocolate will be available to all, courtesy of Applebee’s. This year’s tree was donated by Joe DiNicola of Pittsfield. A Green Mountain Christmas Toy Room at the Christian Center

Green Mountain Christian Center announces plans for the Second Annual Green Mountain Christmas on December 18 and 19, at Green Mountain Christian Center (GMCC), 440 Main Street, Bennington, Vermont. The plans include decorating gingerbread houses, live Christmas music, hot cocoa, and other Christmastide activities. However, the focus will be on the Toy Gift Room for parents in need. As many now know, The Spirit of Sharing has re-directed its efforts toward raising funds to help folks with food and fuel, which given the economic climate, is obviously needed. The Green Mountain Christmas will try to do its best to help fill in the gap with the toys, but we will obviously need help. Thanks to the generosity of many in this community, Christmas 2008, our first attempt to help parents in need with gifts for their children was a huge success, although a bit overwhelming, serving 140 parents for toys for 352 children. We hope to increase that to 300 parents (750-900 children, ages 12 and under). Lecture by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Rescheduled for December 11

Due to a late scheduling change in the filming of his upcoming PBS series, “Faces of America,” the lecture originally scheduled for December 3 by scholar, literary critic and historian Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., has been rescheduled for Friday, December 11, at 7 p.m. at the Bennington Center for the Arts. Dr. Gates’ talk, entitled “Genealogy, Genetics, and African-American History,” is based on his innovative exploration into genealogy and DNA analysis. The evening event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a book-signing. Most recently, Gates, the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the W.E.B. ...p.j.s... We begin our life wearing undershirts and diapers and one piece jammies for sleepwear, sleeping in a crib and sitting strapped into an invant seat. On cooler evenings and afternoons our parents dress us in snap-together footed togs. I don’t remember how warm and snuggly it felt, but I can imagine. By the time we’re two or three, we graduate to snap-together separate tops and bottoms. For winter evenings we wear one-piece footed pajamas that snap up and down the front with a snap-up drawer-drop in the back. By the time we’re four the way is clear to wear real pajamas. The kind with pull up bottoms and button tops. Keep in mind, however, that we’re never too old for footed pajamas. I always felt so good when I put on a pair of flannel footed pajamas after a nice hot bubble bath. My daughter loves footed pajamas because her feet get so cold in the night. By the time I was 20 and moved away from home, I wanted to be mature, grown-up, and sophisticated, so I bought my first nightgown. It was white satin, sleeveless and calf-length. It gave me a nice feeling all over about myself, and on warm California nights, it was comfortable to wear. One afternoon my mother came to visit me in my apartment in Panorama City (in the San Fernando Valley). Ever suspicious and knowing that I was seeing Mike Coons, a ruggedly handsome man, worldly, and 20 years my senior, she walked over to my bedroom closet and slid open the doors. She was expecting to find a man’s clothing. There was none but she did find that nightgown. She pulled it out and said, “Humph! What’s this!!?” I told her it was a nightgown. She said, “Humph! You never used to wear nightgowns!” Well, you know, you don’t need a nightgown to do what she was implying I was doing. That’s when you skip the pajamas and nightgowns for crying out loud! Grandma, a woman who loved life and was very funny, and my mother’s mother, always wore long, sleeveless nightgowns. I don’t understand how she stayed warm on those frigid, windy, winter Chicago nights. Now that I’m 67 and live alone in a large and drafty house, the first thing I do when I get home from work is put on my comfortably warm flannel pajamas. What goes around comes around. We start out in undershirts and diapers, go to footed p.j.s., separates, nightgowns, and back to flannel pajamas. I hope I can avoid the final return to the beginning of my sleepwear cycle, wearing diapers, sleeping in a bed with rails and sitting up in a wheelchair strapped in with a posey. ________________________________________________

MAC Christmas Events

Missionary Alliance Church (MAC), at 198 Crescent Boulevard in Bennington, will present a Christmas Concert/Sing Along, directed by Lindsey Wensley, on Sunday, December 13 at 10 a.m. It will feature ensembles including the adult choir, children’s group, women’s duet, brass quartet, and Praise Band. Professor Anita Hill of Brandeis Has Been Named to the Board of Trustees at Southern Vermont College The Board of Trustees at Southern Vermont College appointed Professor Anita Hill as a new Board Member at its recent meeting. Hill is a faculty member at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. She has taught law and social policy for 25 years and lectures regularly in the U.S. and abroad and serves on

a wide range of Boards. “We are honored that Professor Hill has accepted our invitation to join the Southern Vermont College Board of Trustees,” stated Board Chair, Wallace Altes. “She is a scholar of the first rank; an eloquent advocate for those who too often do not have an advocate; and a role model for all young people.” SVC President Karen Gross, who worked with Hill when they were both law professors, added, “Professor Hill brings a wealth of talent, experience and wisdom to SVC. She understands the needs of vulnerable and first-generation students and brings extraordinary sensitivity to conversations on contemporary social issues. She also has a strong interest in healthcare and healthcare delivery systems and can help shape the future of SVC’s many healthcare initiatives. I look forward to

working with her again.” This past April, Hill was the featured lecturer for the annual Four College Issues Forum, held at the Bennington Center for the Arts and sponsored by Bennington College, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Southern Vermont College and Williams College. A teacher, speaker, researcher and writer, Hill has earned international prominence as an authority on race and gender issues, particularly in the workplace. She began her teaching career as an assistant professor at Oral Roberts University and later joined the faculty at the University of Oklahoma College of Law. Professor Hill was thrust into the public spotlight in 1991when she testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee during then Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas’ confirmation hearing. The legacy of her testimony includes an increased awareness of sexual harassment in the workplace today. In 1997, Hill published Speaking Truth to Power, a personal memoir and study of her involvement in the Thomas hearings. She is the author of numerous articles on international commercial law, bankruptcy (Continued on page 7) December 2, 2009

She has also written commentary for Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Boston Globe and Ms. Magazine and appears frequently on programs including Good Morning America, Meet the Press, The Today Show and Larry King Live. Hill received her law degree from Yale University and a degree in psychology from Oklahoma State University. In 1980, she began her law career as an associate with the Washington, D.C., firm of Wald, Harkrader & Ross. A year later, she became special counsel to the assistant secretary of the Department of Education’s office for Civil Rights. She also served as advisor to the chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Founded in 1926, Southern Vermont College offers a careerenhancing, liberal arts education with 22 academic degree programs for approximately 500 students. Southern Vermont College recognizes the importance of educating students for the workplace of the twenty-first century and for lives as successful leaders in their communities. The Clark Acquires Great Barbizon School Painting

The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute has announced the acquisition of a major nineteenth-century landscape painting by Pierre Étienne Théodore Rousseau. The acquisition brings to the public one of the greatest Barbizon School paintings, “Farm in the Landes (House of the Garde),” which until now has been held in private collections and has not been widely exhibited since 1946. “The painting is a moving testament to Rousseau’s abiding love for rural life and unadorned nature,” said Richard Rand, senior curator at the Clark. “This large scale picture transforms the Clark’s collection of Barbizon pictures.” Rousseau worked on “Farm in the Landes” for nearly twentyfive years. The painting had its origins in a trip to a region just south of Bordeaux in 1844. At that time he made a composition drawing and oil painting

nearly as large as the final work. Upon returning to his Barbizon studio, Rousseau worked on the canvas over the ensuing decades. The painting was one of three initially purchased in 1852 by Frédéric Hartmann, an Alsatian industrialist and one of the artist’s most important patrons. Owing to Rousseau’s obsessive work, Hartmann was unable to collect his picture until well after the artist’s death in 1867. One of the key figures of the Barbizon School, Rousseau wrote to Hartmann that “Farm in the Landes” was one of his best and most personal works. It depicts a region of southwestern France that the artist likened to Eden. Monumental oaks, silhouetted against an intense blue sky, dominate a scene of a humble farm warmed by late afternoon sunlight. A dusty path leads through a rustic gate into a busy farmyard where a dog sits patiently, a man repairs a wagon wheel while a child looks on, a woman feeds cows, and a second woman hangs washing before a barn with a great thatched roof. In a series of remarkable letters, artist and patron debated the progress of the three pictures, particularly the question of the high degree of finish that characterizes Rousseau’s late style. Rousseau explained that “Farm in the Landes is for me the object of serious thought and a study at once sweet and bitter.” His long work on the picture finally brought pictorial form to his experience of the place itself, but the meticulous technique he had developed was at odds with the current fashion for quickly painted landscapes. Exhibition at Images Cinema Features Works by Pownal Artist

New paintings by Pownal artist Rick (“Rico”) Dovey will be on view in the lobby at Images Cinema in Williamstown from December 8 through January 18, 2010. The exhibition, Persona, is a series of portraits that capture people who present themselves to the world in the guise of assumed characters. The reception on Tuesday, December 8, free and open to the public, begins at 5 p.m. and includes a screening at 5:30 p.m. of the world premiere of Rico’s short film, “La Fée Verte” (21 minutes). This fictional story of a Belle Époque painter who becomes addicted to absinthe, the “Green Fairy,” integrates period music and works by Cézanne, van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and others to trace the artist’s personal descent and to suggest a parallel with the onset of World War I.

Small Jazz Ensembles to Perform at Williams College

Several small jazz ensembles coached by Andy Jaffe will perform on Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall on the Williams College campus. This free event is open to the public and no tickets are necessary. Andy Jaffe is the Lyell B.Clay Artist in Residence in Jazz and Director of Jazz Activities at Williams College, as well as having served from 1999-2010 as Artistic Director of the Williamstown Jazz Festival. An active jazz composer, performer, and recording artist, Jaffe has been a leader in jazz pedagogy for over thirty years, having taught at the Berklee College of Music (1977-81); The University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Graduate program in Afro-American Music and Jazz (199498); the Institut Musical de Formation Professionelle in Nimes, France (1984); Amherst College (1987-99); Tufts University (1992-93); Smith College (1997-99); The Tainan (Taiwan) National University of the Arts (2009), as well as at Williams (since 1988), where he directs the jazz ensembles and teaches courses in jazz ear training, theory/improvisation, arranging/composition, and on the music of Duke Ellington and John Coltrane. He is also on the faculty of the Jazz in July and Litchfield Jazz Camp summer programs.

The expeditions of European explorers 400 years ago left indelible imprints our area. Within a few days of each other, in the fall of 1609, Henry Hudson sailed up the Hudson River as far as present day Albany and Samuel de Champlain investigated the lake that bears his name, and was likely the first European to see what we know today as Vermont. Hudson sailed for the Dutch East India Company, and established the claim that led to Dutch colonization in the 17th century. Champlain’s was one part of a series of expeditions that led to French domination to the North. The Bennington County Choral Society has chosen to present a program of Christmas music that reflects the contributions of these two cultures to our region. The concert will include Dutch carols, or Kerstliedjes, from the time of Hudson’s voyage, and Noëls, the French traditional carols of the season. The Netherlands was not a political entity in the early 17th century, but the Dutch East India Company was governed by a group of directors from several cities in the Low Countries. A rich cosmopolitan culture existed in the larger cities, such as Amsterdam, where a lively climate of trade brought in goods, ideas and the arts from throughout Europe and beyond. Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was one of the principal composers of the day, at the peak of his productive output at the time of Hudson’s voyage. The choral society will sing “Gaudete omnes,” a refined Christmas piece in five parts from his pen. Samuel Scheidt, a student of Sweelinck’s at this same time, later compiled a collection of harmonizations that included the folk-song carol “O Little One Sweet,” perhaps best known today in a later harmonization by J. S. Bach. The concert, Kerstliedjes and Noëls, will be performed at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Pleasant Street, Bennington on Saturday, December 5 at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, December 6 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door or in advance at the Bennington Bookshop or from Choral Society members. St. Peter’s Church is handicapped accessible.

The Pownal Valley Fair will hold its eleventh annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, December 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the American Legion Hall, Route 7, Pownal, Vermont. There will be a super tag sale with a large assortment of Christmas items, as well as a silent auction and craft sale. Special gift store items from a closed gift store will also be available for sale. There will also be clothing for sale. Lunch will be available including a variety of foods. Sunderland School Fundraiser Offers ‘Souper’ Game Night

The sixth grade students at Sunderland Elementary School were engaged in educational and environmental activities on their class trip to Schoodic Education Center at Acadia National Park in early November. This adventure was funded by grants and student fundraising endeavors. In-depth studies of rock cycles and the changing earth were the focus of lessons with the National Park Rangers in Maine. Other highlights included scientific inquiry, data gathering and drawing conclusions based on habitat researches, tide pooling and observations of ecosystems. Students especially enjoyed GPS mapping activities. The class will be sponsoring a “Souper Game Night” on Friday, December 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. Families, friends and community members are invited to attend this fundraiser which will support the Schoodic Adventure. There will be a variety of soups, crackers and breads to enjoy as well as dessert. Holiday Stockings for Seniors

At Home Senior Care, in partnership with the Council on Aging, is seeking gifts to brighten a senior’s day during the holiday season. Donations can be dropped off at our Collection boxes located at Bank of Bennington locations in Bennington, Arlington, Manchester, Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging on North Street, Bennington and Bennington College. Mary Lou Morrissette, president of At Home Senior Care suggests these items for donations: phone and gas cards, stamps and an assortment of cards, candy, lotion, warm mittens, gloves, warm socks, toothpaste and toothbrushes, pet food and treats; this is just to name a few. AmeriCorps volunteers and staff of At Home Senior Care will collect the gifts to be distributed. Anyone interested in helping with wrapping the donations can join us at The Manchester Town Hall on December 18 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. A holiday luncheon will be served to volunteers at noon. A suggested donation for the lunch is $3.25 for those 60 and over and $4.00 for those under 60. The program continues through the first week of December so we can make sure the gifts are ready to go in December. The Arlington Garden Club’s annual meeting and Christmas Luncheon will be held at the Mt. Anthony Country Club in Bennington on Tuesday, December 8 starting at noon. President Dot Closs will preside, and annual reports will be submitted by the chairpersons of the club’s 14 standing committees and of this year’s special events. The Board of Gardeners headed by vice president Barbara Travers will provide desserts. Barbara has been assisted in planning an outstanding series of programs for the Club’s 63rd year by Nancy Boardman, who also serves as the southern district director of the state organization, Ellen Lipshutz, the club historian, Fran Shepherd, Joanna Taylor and Dot Closs, ex officio. Highlight of the day will be the installation of new officers by Stephanie Hockensmith, newly-elected president of the Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont. The outgoing president, Dot Closs, has served with distinction for two two-year terms, and her tireless, energetic leadership has been an inspiration to all. Members are reminded to bring a tin of purchased (not homemade) cookies or wrapped candies for the community-wide Red Stocking project, headed by Natalie Caler, founder of this annual Christmas program which provides new winter clothing to area school children.
