On Sunday, February 15, at 4 p.m., Sage City Symphony, under music director and conductor Michael Finckel, will present its annual chamber orchestra concert. Free and open to the public, the concert will be at Greenwall Auditorium in the VAPA Building on the Bennington College campus. The program will open with the Concerto Grosso, Opus 6, No. 4, in A Minor, by George Frideric Handel, an 18th-century English composer of German birth. This classic of English Baroque style sparkles with life and vigor. Following the Handel, the symphony will perform the Cello Concerto in A Minor by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, featuring David Gibson as soloist. The work, written in 1872, is structured in one continuous movement and is a favorite of virtuoso cellists. Soloist David Gibson received degrees from the Juilliard School and Yale University. His primary field was cello performance, but he also studied conducting at Juilliard and composition at Yale. While a member of the Center for the Creative and Performing Arts in Buffalo he was associated with the composer Morton Feldman. Gibson is presently Clinical Professor in the Department of the Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Continued on page 2)

Sometimes the replaceable parts of a home just look ready to go. Kitchen cabinets are past their shelf life and dated in appearance. Other times a house might be perfect except for some well worn bathroom wall tile. Finally, after years of holding out, the owner may have saved up enough to replace that center hall flooring, which can be a pricey proposition. That’s where I found myself some years ago, and decided to make a pit stop into RehmBrandt’s Design and see what the folks there could do for me. What I found was a wide range of options, some very friendly staff members, and perhaps most importantly, the ability to address almost any budget needs in home renovation. Maple Leaf Quilters will be meeting on Tuesday, February 17 at 10 Deer St., Godnick Center, Rutland. The doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting beginning at 7 p.m. Guest Speaker will be Amy Ropple of Reading, MA. Amy is a public school art teacher by day and a quilter by night. Amy “works with a range of textural materials and processes to create embellished works of fiber art. She uses fabric piecing and mixed media collage techniques to construct each quilted work...many of her works are heavily beaded. Her quilts are often interpretations of her photographs, colorful recreations of archaeological artifacts, semiabstract figurative work and portraits of people and pets.” Amy has completed both a BFA and MSAE degrees at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston.

Rotary Four Way Test Speech Contest

High school students in grades 9 through 12, including students who are home schooled, are eligible to enter the Four-Way-Test Speech Contest, sponsored jointly by The Bennington Rotary and the Catamount Rotary Clubs. Students choose their own topics. However, speeches must address the four tests of Rotary: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? The contest will be held on Wednesday, March 11, with a snow date of March 12, in the Rotary Room of the Bennington Free Library from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Speeches must be five to seven minutes long. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 speakers; $300 for first, $200 for second and $100 for third. The first place winner will be eligible for the District semi-finals competition in the beginning of April.

Historic Photos of Pownal

The Pownal Historical Society will hold a public meeting on Sunday, February 22 at 2 p.m. in the Pownal Public Library, in which residents and friends of Pownal may display historic photos from Pownal’s past. The Society invites anyone who has old photos of Pownal to bring them to the meeting so that they can be projected on a screen, viewed, and discussed by the audience members. Afterward, members of the Society will be available to scan the photos and save them digitally so that the Town has an historic record of photos. As Pownal moves toward its celebration of its 250th anniversary next year, the Historical Society is committed to try to preserve as much of the town’s past as possible and to find ways to make those resources available to everyone. A Quinella Tournament will be held at Rensselaer County’s eastern area Everett Wagar Senior Center on February 20, beginning at 9 a.m. The cost is $1 to enter tournament, and $.75 per hand. Food Drive Honors Memory Of Local Man

Local attorney Robert Scanlon was only 39 when he died trying to save the life of a drowning boy in the flood-swollen Hoosick River. The tragic event saddened the community back in October of 2005. But Scanlon’s long-time friend, Flynn Mattison, Sales Manager at Bennington House of Tile & Carpet, has found a positive way to honor the memory of this exemplary man. The Second Annual Robert Scanlon Memorial Food Drive will be held now through February 14 to help area families in need. Mattison remembers Scanlon as a kind and generous man who gave of his time enthusiastically to help others. “Bob always tried to help people who were less fortunate. He would be pleased to support an effort like this, especially since the recipient, the BROC food shelf, serves a growing number of families with children,” noted Mattison. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to donate nutritious, nonperishable food items- tuna, peanut butter, cereal, soups, pasta, etc. as well as non-food items such as soap, toothpaste, shampoo, laundry detergent and dish detergent. Donations can be dropped off at the Bennington House of Tile & Carpet, 1267 Harwood Hill, Bennington between the hours of 8 a.m. anad 5 p.m. Monday though Friday. Businesses with large amounts of donations can call the store at 4422494 to arrange for a pick up. All donations will be given to the Bennington office of BROCCommunity Action in Southwestern Vermont. Town Of Hoosick Expands Recreation Program to Include Golf Lessons

Exploring the Revolutionary War in Bennington County

Journey back to the spring of 1775 when Bennington County was no more than a wild frontier. It was from here that the first victory of the American Revolution was won, when Patriot Ethan Allen led the famed Green Mountain Boys in the capture of towering Fort Ticonderoga from the British. Join Richard Smith, author of “The Revolutionary War in Bennington County” as he discusses his book and explores through slides the sites and events surrounding the Battle of Bennington at the Bennington Historical Society Meeting. This program will be held at the Bennington Museum on Thursday, February 19 at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Smith will take the audience through the famed covered bridges, historic taverns and quaint villages of Bennington that in another life played a vital role in leading our country toward

independence. Smith has lifelong and ancestral ties to Vermont. His interest in history and his love of Vermont prompted him to lead historic tours in the state. He has created historical maps and self-guided tours that have been published and distributed throughout southern Vermont. While giving tours, Smith found that people were interested to learn that many of the major heroes in Revolutionary War events were from Bennington County, including Ethan Allen. Allen’s march north to capture Fort Ticonderoga started in Bennington. Finding that visitors were pleased to find that nationally important historical sites in this area were preserved, Smith chose to write “The Revolutionary War in Bennington County”. Smith earned degrees in engineering, economics, and business from Lehigh University and Columbia University. In addition to being a docent at Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home in Manchester, Smith is on the Board of Directors of the Manchester Historical Society and is a member of various other historical societies. He is donating all royalties from his book to groups involved in historic preservation. His book, which was released last August, has been on best seller lists and he has appeared on local television discussing the Revolutionary War in the area.
