St. Mary’s Girls’ Basketball Team Starts Season 3-1

St. Mary’s Academy seventh and eighth grade girl’s basketball began its season with a 3-1 record. On December 18 The Eagles defeated Arlington with the help of Grace Delurey’s 10 points and quick hands on defense. After dropping a hard fought contest to Sacred Heart on January 14, the girls rebounded with two consecutive victories. On January 16 Alice Hayden led the way offensively and defensively nailing two clutch three pointers to hold off Floodbrook. Anna Restino’s 17 points and playmaking leadership paved the way for SMA’s victory over Dorset on January 23rd. Through the season’s first four games SMA has shown great teamwork on both sides of the ball. 8th graders Nicole St. Onge, Mary Peters, Julia Baker and Rachel Jones dedicated an unselfish play have lead to a balanced scoring attack in which all players have scored. 7th graders Ashley St. Onge and Olivia Schneider have added spirit and tenacity in all areas of the game.

Army Pvt. Cory S. Clarkson has graduated from the Petroleum Supply Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Lee, Petersburg, Va. The course is designed to train students in receipt, storage, issue, shipping, and distribution of petroleum, oil and lubricant products used by the Army. Training included instruction in petroleum and water accounting, operating equipment associated with fuels and water distribu-

tion; and fueling and defueling operations and procedures on vehicles, aircraft and stationary equipment. Clarkson is the son of Sheila A. Clarkson and stepson of Robert J. Getty of County Route 31, Salem, N.Y. The private is a 2008 graduate of Salem Central School.

Zachary P. Baker, son of Dale and Sherrie Baker of West Road, Dorset, Vt., and a 2008 graduate of Burr & Burton Academy, recently began a new phase of his life and enlisted into the United States Marine Corps. His first military honor was during his graduation at Marine Corps Recruit Training in Parris Island, S.C., on January 9, 2009. He was promoted to the rank of Private First Class, expert rifleman and has now earned the title of United States Marine. During recruit training, Zachary learned military customs and courtesies, first aid and a variety of military related subjects. Marine Corps recruit training is a rigorous training period, both physically and mentally, designed to enhance raw talent, build team-working skills and create the moral discipline. All Marines from the north east pass through this rigorous 13-week training program. Private First Class Baker is currently continuing his training as an Enlisted Aircrew Chief.

However, I was thinking the other night, with this depressing economy, how grateful we should all be that there are still companies advertising their products and services on television! Think about it...without advertising, you wouldn’t be watching your favorite programs this afternoon or this evening. No news; no Law & Order; no CSI Miami; no Who Wants to be a Millionaire; no CNN; no Sponge Bob Square Pants; NO SUPER BOWL!!! I can’t imagine a world without sports on television! Especially cold winter Saturdays and Sundays, without football! No Monday Night Football! Horrible to think about! Of course, the way the mind travels, I started to think about The TriState Pennysaver, and our advertisers. Haca Free Tax Service is Now Open

The Hoosick Area Church Association (HACA), for the FIFTH year, is offering free assistance to the public in preparing income tax returns through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or VITA program. The VITA site will be located at the HACA Center at 26 John St., Hoosick Falls, and former home of the Falls Federal Credit Union. The office will be open each Saturday, from 9 to 3 p.m. and on Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. through February. In March and April, offices will be open on Saturdays from 9 to 1 PM., and on Thursdays by appointment. Office hours have been scheduled for evenings and weekends to accommodate people who find it difficult to take time off from work. The service is free and is provided by local volunteers who have completed an IRS training course in basic income tax preparation. Call Dianne at 518-686-5310 to make an appointment. Volunteer positions at the sight such as reception, filing, photo copying, or hostess are also available. The VITA program offers free assistance to those with low-to-middle incomes (wage earners who make $40,000 or less) who file Form 1040EZ, Form 1040A, or a basic 1040 Federal tax return. Most returns for both Federal and State (including Vermont and Massachusetts) can be filed electronically and upon request, refunds can be deposited electronically into a checking or savings account. Deadline for Applications for Habitat for Humanity Project is Approaching

The Bennington Area Habitat for Humanity is looking for families that have a dream and are ready to own their own home. The home will be built on land in North Bennington, VT. The size of the house built will meet the needs of the family chosen. To qualify as an applicant, a family must show a need for decent, affordable housing and have an income that fits Habitat’s guidelines. Families are expected to contribute a significant number of hours of work toward the construction of their new home, and they must have lived or worked in Bennington County for at least one full year. A Habitat home comes with a mortgage, property taxes and property insurance. It is not a give-away. Applicants must have a fairly stable financial history and be ready to accept all the responsibilities of home ownership. This application period ends February 6, 2009. Celebrating President Lincoln

The Solomon Wright Public Library is joining many libraries, museums and historical societies across the nation and celebrating the 200th anniversary year of our 16th President’s birth. On February 15, Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., Seth Bongartz, executive director of Hildene and lifelong Manchester, Vt. resident, will give a presentation on Robert Todd Lincoln. Robert was a successful lawyer, diplomat, public servant, and businessman. A re-examination of correspondence and other primary documents once belonging to this eldest son of Abraham Lincoln and family sheds new light on longstanding misconceptions. Question and answer period on Robert Lincoln, his Vermont home, Hildene and its residents will be followed by refreshments. This program is free and open to the public at 97 Main Street. Dafé Brudäjo in Concert at the Meetinghouse Café

Valentine Day Dinner and Dance

Dafé Brudäjo, the Williamstown, MA, group that plays an eclectic mix of contemporary folk, jazz and original compositions, will be on stage at the Meetinghouse Café of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Bennington on Friday, February 13. The concert begins at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15. Refreshments are available. Dafé Brudäjo features Ferrilyn Sourdiffe on vocals and hand percussion, David Fowle on bass, mandolin and vocals, Josh Kleederman on electric guitar, Bruce Wheat on guitar, vocals and sax, and David Norman on percussion. Dafé is known for their 3 and 4 part harmonies and eclectic repertoire and has performed in the tri-state area for over ten years. Caffe Lena in Saratoga reported that “These folks are wonderful. Their entire sound is smooth as silk, their harmonies crisp and their rhythms richly engaging. Ferrilyn’s voice is reminisent of Billy Holiday and Tracy Chapman - a bit more accessible I’d say. Wow. The standards they do as well as the original works of Bruce Wheat are all performed with an energy and ease that at once gathers your interest and puts you at a most pleasant place.” A portion of the concert proceeds benefit the Bennington Interfaith Council’s Emergency Food and Fuel Fund. Annual Dinner Meeting for Bennington Chamber of Commerce

The Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce held its Annual Dinner Meeting on January 23. It was held at the Mt Anthony Country Club where 136 Members enjoyed a fabulous evening marking the Chamber’s accomplishments in 2008. A short business meeting followed a great dinner. The Chamber honored retiring Board Members, Gary H. Thomas and Stuart Hurd for their dedication and valuable service. Our outgoing Board President, Sue Congdon, was also honored by the Chamber. Special recognition presentations were made to the following: Bob and Cora Howe received the President’s Award for outstanding service to the community. Eunice Schleif (post humous) was awarded the D. Ed Moore Award as a Chamber Member who always exhibited the best qualities of Chamber service and community engagement. Her daughter Nadine accepted on her behalf. Ed Woods of the Bennington Banner was awarded the Community Business Partner Award. His effort on behalf of local events and programs has been a huge benefit to the Chamber of Commerce and to the Bennington region. The Better Bennington Corporation received the Partnership Award for all the projects we do together for the community. Our organizations support each other and we enjoy the team approach to making a better community. THE coveted Hospitality Award went to Tracy Galle who does an amazing job at the Shaftsbury Country Store and is a frequent contributor to WBTN-AM 1370 local programs.

Oscar Nominee Oldcastle Theatre Company Alumnus

Melissa Leo, an Alumnus of Oldcastle Theatre Company, was nominated this week for an Academy Award as Best Actress for her performance in FROZEN RIVER. Ms. Leo, who lived for a time near Brattleboro, Vermont appeared in the premiere of Bob Shanks NO CURE IN SIGHT in 2002. She has had a long career on stage, in television and film. She was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for her work on ALL MY CHILDREN. she was later a regualr on the CBS-TV series THE YOUNG RIDERS and is best known to television viewers for her four years as a regulaqr on the gritty cop drama HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREETS which was filmed in Baltimore. in 2004 She was runner-up in 2004 for the Best Supporting Actress Award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. for 24 GRAMS.
