Tennessee Williams’ classic, “The Glass Menagerie,” will be performed by the Mad Hatters Drama Club at Southern Vermont College Friday through Sunday, April 17 to 19, in the Everett Mansion Theatre. Under the direction of SVC alumnus Charles Krawczyk ’05, the play will be held April 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. and a matinee on April 19 at 3 p.m. Set in the 1930s, this memory play featured a family of three, fractured by their separate yet equally significant character flaws. “The Glass Menagerie” is a study of emotion and perseverance as each character finds their way. Amanda, the overprotective mother, played by SVC student Amy Gallagher, is particularly proud of her past and often reflects her regrets onto her offspring Tom and Lora. Lora, played by student Elisabeth Messer, is a shy and fragile home girl who is set up with a gentleman caller by her brother Tim, played by student Scott Vogel. Jim, the gentleman caller, played by student Ryan LeGere, plays along with this setup but does not fully realize the circumstances of the evening. Admission for the play will be $3 for students and children and $5 for the general public. Tickets will be available at the door; however, seating is limited. History Comes to Life at the Old Courthouse in Salem, NY In April, Salem area history will come to life at the Old Washington County Courthouse with two oral history panel discussions led by Salem Historian, Al Cormier. The first panel discussion entitled “Village Folk” will take place in the Courthouse courtroom on Thursday, April 23, at 7 p.m. and will feature Jack Barber, Marian Coffinger, Elaine Gibb, Bob Hunter, Delores Phaneuf and Ed Phillips. “Rural Folk” will take place on Thursday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in the courtroom and will feature Neil Adams, Bruce Ferguson, Peter Hanks, Grace Sheldon, Meg Southerland and Dottie Worthington. Please join the guests at the Courthouse for two fascinating discussions on earlier life in this area and bring your own memories to contribute. This event is for everyone’s enjoyment and there is no charge. The Courthouse is abuzz with activity, with new classes and workshops being offered for the spring months. The varied offerings run through May 30. Taconic Baroque Ensemble To Perform Beneﬁt Concert For Bennington Free Clinic The Taconic Baroque Ensemble will perform a benefit concert on behalf of the Bennington Free Clinic on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at 3 p.m., at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The program will include the Concerto in G-major for solo viola, strings and harpsichord by Georg Phillip Telemann with Gail Smith as solo violist; Concerto for organ and orchestra in F-major (op.4, no. 4) by George Frideric Handel with Randall Krum on organ; and the Concerto for solo oboe, harpsichord and strings in d-minor by Antonio Vivaldi with Lyndon Moors on oboe. UCS Conference to Host Change Expert In these times, people are facing change on so many levels. Habits are changing. Ideas are changing. How to manage change is the topic of the Third Annual United Counseling Service Conference — Stages of Change — on May 1 at the Bennington Center for the Arts. Dr. Carlo DiClemente, one of the world’s leading experts on the process of change, will present the day-ong conference. His work has been adopted around the world because it revolutionizes the understanding of change. “We all make changes,” said DiClemente by phone. “The question is how can we approach change more successfully by tailoring our activities to stimulate and reinforce change?” Whether you’re running a business, parenting children, or recovering from addiction, change is a big part of life. Walter and Dana Gilbert of Dorset will discuss their work with therapy dogs at the 50th Annual Meeting of Second Chance Animal Center on Friday, April 17 at First Congregational Church in Manchester. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Walter Gilbert and his therapy dog, Brandy, are familiar friends at Manchester’s Equinox Terrace, where they have visited regularly over the past six years. Dana Gilbert is the Humane Educator at Second Chance and teaches at elementary schools throughout the county. The Gilberts and their dogs volunteer at hospitals, schools, nursing homes, libraries and anywhere else the therapeutic power of animals is seen to be effective. While service dogs do specific tasks for their owners, therapy dogs provide comfort and companionship during their visits. Brandy, an Australian Shepherd, will demonstrate his work at the meeting. Following a brief social time to chat with friends and staff and partake of refreshments, the business meeting will start at 7 p.m. Board President Nancy Boardman, of Arlington, will introduce new board members, thank outgoing officers, and pass the gavel on to Judy Murphy, of Bennington, who will take on the position. The President’s Award will honor the team of dog walkers who faithfully volunteer their time to see that every dog awaiting adoption gets a chance to take a walk and get some much-needed one-on-one socializing. Their work helps to relieve kennel stress as dogs wait for their “forever homes.” The staff at Second Chance will choose an employee of the year to receive a Staff Award, which will be presented by Tina Wheeldon, Manager of Shelter Operations. Historic Park-McCullough Presents Film Festival Weekend Historic Park-McCullough continues its exploration of the theme of “The Immigrant Experience in America” with a weekend festival of five films on Friday, April 24, Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26. Each showing will be followed by a discussion led by Dan Casey, noted writer and producer. All films are free and open to the public. All showings will be in the Carriage Barn at Park-McCullough. The festival opens on Friday, April 24, at 7 p.m. with “The Green Square Mile: The Story of the Charlestown Irish”. Dan Casey, writer and co-producer, will show his prize-winning film and discuss the process of making a film on an American immigrant group. “The Green Square Mile” documents the previously forgotten history of Irish immigration into Charlestown from the 17th century and through the grim horror of the Famine years and beyond. The documentary not only traces the rise of the Irish as a political force, it relives the crises of forced busing, urban renewal, and urban crime. In interviews with neighbors, community leaders, and local kids, the film captures the resilience and determination of the Charlestown Irish and the very real connections with Ireland itself. The film was a selection of the Boston Irish Film Festival and has been screened in Boston, Ireland, and Northern Ireland to great acclaim. The festival continues on Saturday, April 25 with three different films: 10 a.m. “I Remember Mama” (1948) NR. Based on a play by John Van Druten, which was in turn based on the stories from Mama’s Bank Account by Kathryn Forbes, this is the story of the ups and downs of a Norwegian immigrant family in San Francisco, held together by the stoic yet tender matriarch. The film was directed by George Stevens and starred Irene Dunne in the title role. The film retains potent sentiment without being overpowering. It was nominated for five Academy Awards and inspired a successful television series, Mama, on CBS from 1949-57. The film also inspired a musical stage show of the same name that opened on Broadway in 1979. 2 p.m. “Hester Street” (1975) PG. Joan Micklin Silver’s film stars Carol Kane as Gitl, a traditional Jewish woman who travels to America in the late 1800s to reunite with her husband but instead is met with heartache when she discovers he’s a changed man. Nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of a woman abandoned, Kane infuses Gitl with depth and humanity, making her struggles at once palpable and enlightening. Co-stars Doris Roberts and Mel Howard. The film has been called “one of the most endearing and engaging efforts to emerge from American independent cinema”. 7 p.m. “Big Night” (1996) R. Despite a talented chef and outstanding cuisine, an Italian restaurant run by two brothers (Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub) teeters on the verge of bankruptcy. Then they learn a huge star will visit their bistro for a multi-course meal. With everything to lose, the brothers pull out all the stops hoping the “big night” will save their trattoria. What follows is a culinary adventure that will teach them a lot about themselves, each other, and their different definitions of life, love and success. Co-directed by Tucci and Campbell Scott who also appears in the film along with Ian Holm, Isabella Rossellini, Minnie Driver, Liev Schreiber, Allison Janney and a host of other wonderful actors. Sunday, April 26 2 p.m. “Moscow on the Hudson” (1984) R. Moscow Circus saxophone player Vladimir Ivanoff (Robin Williams), on tour in New York City, walks into Bloomingdale’s to buy blue jeans and walks out with a 6

girlfriend, an immigration lawyer and a buddy. His life, and theirs, will never be the same. Vladimir experiences many misadventures and a longing for his family in this bittersweet story set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the 1980s. Life in the Big Apple is not what Ivanov had expected. In the end, although he finds that the American Dream isn’t what it seems, he learns that it can be whatever he wants it to be. The Golden Globe-nominated film was directed by Paul Mazursky and features Maria Conchita Alonso and Cleavant Derricks. One reviewer called it “an entertaining and touching tale”. Discussion leader Dan Casey is a prolific writer and award-winning lecturer who has published more than 150 books, monographs, articles, and reviews, as well as fiction and poetry. His Irish-American volumes – Irish-American Fiction: Essays in Criticism and Irish-American Fiction: A Reader (both with Robert E. Rhodes) – have, according to critics, “established and defined the field.” He has written and co-produced a one-hour documentary, “The Green Square Mile: Story of the Charlestown Irish” and is currently at work on two screenplays – one set in 11th-century Ireland, the other in rural Vermont – as well as the documentary, “Boston’s North End: America’s Italian Neighborhood.” Dr. Casey has served as professor, chair, dean, vice president, and president at colleges and universities in Britain, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, and the U.S. He has been awarded four State University of New York Research Grants, four Massachusetts Council on the Humanities and Public Policy Grants, and four U.S. Fulbrights, as well a score of other grants, honors, and awards. Irish America Magazine named him to its list of “Top 100 Irish Americans.” Dan and his wife Linda live in Randolph, VT. He consults and lectures for the Vermont Humanities Council, Center for International Studies (Northampton, MA), and various U.S. colleges and university programs in the U.S. and Europe. Williams College Sophomore Recital: Leo Brown ‘11, violin

Leo Brown ‘11, violin, from Williams College will perform a Sophomore Recital on Thursday, April 23, at 4 p.m. in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall on the Williams College campus. This free event is open to the public. Accompanying Brown will be Scott Smedinghoof ‘09 on the piano and harpsichord. Works featured in this recital are Bach’s Parita No. 3 in E Major, Corelli’s Violin Sonata in E Minor, Mozart’s Sonata in B-Flat Major, and Ernest Bloch’s Nigun. Also featured is Topography 1, 2, 3 by Williams College student Brian Simalchik ‘10. Leo Brown ‘11 of Niskayuna, New York has played the violin since he was five years old. He performs with the Student Symphony as a violinist and conductor, as well as Williams Symphonic Winds and Berkshire Symphony as a violinist. Leo’s current life plan is to pursue knowledge, achieve balance, appreciate family and friends, and keep things in perspective.

AgrAbility Program Reaches Out to Farmers in Bennington County

Thomas Younkman of Hyde Park recently joined the staff of the Vermont Center for Independent Living as its AgrAbility specialist. Originally from Sarasota,Fla., Tom Younkman has farmed in Vermont for almost 20 years. He and his wife, Carole, own Stony Brook Farm, where they offer tours, produce soap from farm-raised goats and breed German shepherds. Younkman and Tracy Dorman, an outreach specialist for VCIL’s Bennington Thomas Younkman office, were featured recently on Bennington radio station WBTN, along with Pownal farmer Cecily Strohmaier. The trio was interviewed about the AgrAbility program. Vermont AgrAbility provides education and assistance to farmers with disabilities. It is a collaborative partnership with University of Vermont Extension, Rural and Agricultural VocRehab and the Vermont Center for Independent Living. The AgrAbility program has helped Vermonters across the state, including Strohmaier. Strohmaier and her family own, rent and operate several farms in Bennington County. She has faced a number of health challenges over the years, including almost dying of West Nile Virus in 2002. For the past few years she has been living with severe rheumatoid arthritis. The AgrAbility program has made life easier for Strohmaier, providing her with moral support and other, more tangible forms of assistance. One thing the program did was help her put together a plan that included ideas for making it easier to care for her roughly 50 calves. Strohmaier was also provided with a motorized power wagon, which makes hauling pails of milk and buckets of grain much easier for her. “When I have to clean the calf pens, it’s better than a wheelbarrow because it’s got a motor. It has all-wheel drive so you don’t get stuck,” she said. Today, instead of receiving services from AgrAbility, Strohmaier helps others do so, having become a peer support person. For example, when a farmer in Bennington County was run over by a tractor, Strohmaier referred him to the AgrAbility program. The program helped the farmer get rehabilitation services and get moving. The Williams College Department of Music will present a Senior Recital featuring Jessica Kopcho ‘09 with Yvette Wang ‘09, soprano on Friday, April 24, 2009 at 1 p.m. in Chapin Hall on the Williams College campus. This free event is open to the public. Jessica Kopcho ‘09 is a soprano from Southern California double majoring in music and psychology. At Williams sings in the Concert and Chamber Choirs, takes voice lessons, and sings with the coed a cappella group the Ephlats. She played piano for most of her life, and is “attempting” to learn guitar. Next year she will be an intern music teacher at the International School of Trieste in northern Italy. She rows varsity crew, and in years past ran track and played soccer. She loves food, dancing, traveling, athletics, and has been in two musicals at Williams. Main Street Stage Youth Theatre Project presents April Vacation Theatre Camp

Open to students ages 10-18, this program is an opportunity for true collaboration and creativity. The ensemble that participates in this camp will have an introductory day wherein they will experience various types of theatre from Shakespeare to radio theatre to contemporary plays and improv. At the end of the first day, the ensemble will collectively decide what their performance will be: a contemporary play, a classical piece, scenes & monologues, an improv performance, or, perhaps, a play they write themselves! Head Start Holds Open House in North Bennington

Parents interested in preschool openings for their children at Head Start are invited to attend an open house at the North Bennington Head Start on Wednesday, April 22 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Children must be at least three years old by September 1 to enroll for the fall. New for this year, more children are eligible for the free Head Start program. Family income limits have been raised so that more children have access to the nationally accredited quality of Head Start preschool programs. Head Start offers full-day programs for children ages 3 to 5. At the Open House, parents can meet staff, learn how Head Start programs help kids, ask questions, and make plans for the fall. Head Start provides an enriching environment for learning and growth, and special education to children with disabilities. Head Start is sponsored by United Counseling Service (UCS). Writing the Sacred Workshop

Inkberry,Williams College, and the First Congregational Church of Williamstown are co-sponsoring a Writing the Sacred workshop. Thursday, April 30, and Tuesday, May 5, at 7 p.m., Writing the Sacred, a workshop, co-sponsored by Inkberry, Williams College, and the First Congregational Church, will be held in the Church library at 906 Main St. in Williamstown. Both workshops build on journal writing, poetry and spiritual themes. Participants are invited to explore the thin spaces where creative writing and spirituality meet by writing their own new Psalms, or spiritual poems. Each workshop will cover different material, so participants may choose to attend both. The workshop on April 30 is designed to provide a comfortable writing space for GLBT and queer folks, in addition to the general public. Ray McGinnis has taught over 8000 people how to write prayers, poetry, and autobiographies, all the while guiding them to bring their whole heart, mind and spirit to the process. He provides a safe, nurturing space for those who maintain a regular writing practice and for those who have never put pen to paper. His book Writing the Sacred is in its second printing. The Berkshire Symphony Orchestra to Perform ‘Rising Stars’

The Berkshire Symphony Orchestra with guest conductor Julian Kuerti will give a concert on Saturday, April 25, at 8 p.m. in Chapin Hall on the Williams College campus. There will also be a pre-concert talk with Maestro Kuerti at 7:15 p.m. in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall in Bernhard Music Center. This free event is open to the public. This final concert of the season follows the annual tradition of featuring the winners of the Berkshire Symphony Student Soloist Competition that was held in early February 2009. This event is a great showcase for the extraordinary talent at Williams College and is always a highlight of the season. This year we have three soloists. They are Tiffany Yu ‘12, piano; Alexander Taylor ‘10, clarinet; and Alicia Choi ‘09, violin. Their respective pieces are Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major, K. 488 (1st Movement); Copland’s Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra; and Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D Major, opus 35 (all movements.) The orchestra will also present George Perle’s Sinfonietta No. 1 and Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite (1919 version.) Canadian Julian Kuerti has been assistant conductor to James Levine at the Boston Symphony Orchestra since February 2007. He made his BSO debut with concerts in March 2008, leading Knussen’s The Way to Castle Yonder, Dvoak Symphony No. 7, and Beethoven Emperor Concerto, with legendary pianist Leon Fleischer. In July 2008, he stepped in for ailing Levine to conduct a program of Haydn, Schubert and J.S. Bach’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Peter Serkin as soloist. The Boston Globe had this to say about Kuerti’s debut at Symphony Hall: “Kuerti drew sumptuous sounds from the orchestra…with a vibrant and dashing account of Oliver Knussen’s “The Way to Castle Yonder” and a dark, robust reading of Dvorak’s Seventh Symphony.” Kuerti also served as assistant conductor to Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra, which he led in performances of Viktor Ullmann’s opera “Der Kaiser von Atlantis” in the 2007/08 season. He has conducted extensively in Europe, North and South America, performing with orchestras such as the Toronto Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra in Washington DC, Houston Symphony, Berliner Symphoniker, and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Mr. Kuerti was born in Toronto into one of Canada’s most distinguished musical families; his father is famed pianist Anton Kuerti. He began his instrumental training on the violin, studying with some of Canada’s finest teachers. While completing an honors degree in engineering & physics at the University of Toronto, Julian kept up the violin, performing as concertmaster and soloist with various Canadian orchestras. After taking a year off and touring Brazil with Kahana, a Toronto-based world music band, Mr. Kuerti began his conducting studies in the year 2000 at the University of Toronto. That summer he was accepted as a student at the renowned Pierre Monteux School for Conductors in Maine, where he studied for two years with Michael Jinbo and Claude Monteux. Mr. Kuerti studied with David Zinman at the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen in 2004, and with acclaimed Finnish Maestro Jorma Panula at the NAC Conductors Programme in Ottawa. In 2005, Julian was one of two conducting fellows at Tanglewood, where he had the opportunity to learn in masterclasses from James Levine, Kurt Masur, Stefan Asbury and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos - performing with April 15, 2009

the TMC orchestra and fellows throughout the summer. From 2005-2008, Kuerti served as founding artistic director and principal conductor of Berlin’s Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, with whom he recorded a recently released CD “When we were Trees” of Italian Cellist / Composer Giovanni Sollima for Sony/BMG. The Berkshire Symphony includes nearly 70 members, half of whom are students and half of whom are professional musicians. The ensemble presents four major concerts each season. In addition to performing the great standards of orchestral repertoire a recurring theme each year is the performance of contemporary works. Championing the works of living American composers has been an integral part of the mission of the Berkshire Symphony. ________________________________________________

Haitian Quilts Reception

On Friday, April 17, from 5 – 8 p.m., the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Bennington invites the public to a reception for its exhibit of Haitian quilts, which runs through the month of April. These exuberant and unique quilts, ranging from tiny to queen size, were handcrafted by Haitian women—and three men—as part of a nonprofit humanitarian project called Peacequilts. Peacequilts’ primary mission is to relieve extreme poverty by organizing and supporting cooperatives of Haitian women who create quilts which are exhibited and sold in the United States. All of the financial proceeds fold back into these cooperatives. Peacequilts’ secondary mission is to educate the American public about the difficult conditions and challenges faced by Haitian citizens. Education initiatives include curriculum-based school resource kits, DVD presentations, speaking engagements, and its Web site: www. haitipeacequilts.org. Spring Open House at Southern Vermont College

Local Habitat for Humanity Afﬁliate Selects Next Family

Richard Malley, President of the Bennington Area Habitat for Humanity Affiliate, is pleased to announce that Jennifer and Patrick Siegrist and their three children, Rebecca, Taylor, and Mariah, 2, 8, and 13, of Bennington have been selected to become the affiliate’s next family partners. The Siegrist family has lived and worked in the area for the last fifteen years. Speaking about their new home, Patrick wrote “It’s amazing how our excitement is growing with every passing day, and I’m sure this is only the beginning. Jennifer and I agree that if you believe in your dreams and have faith, not only will you have those dreams fulfilled, but more-so than ever imagined.” The Siegrist home, including the cost of the land, will cost close to $125,000. Skilled and unskilled volunteers help make the home affordable by contributing almost all of the labor. The affiliate will continue to seek funds this spring and summer from individuals and area businesses for the home. Dina and Henry Bronson, owners of Bistro Henry, will help by donating $10 for every Mother’s Day brunch that is served on May 10. Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to provide safe, decent, and affordable housing for all people worldwide. This past summer Habitat completed its 325,000th home and now provides housing for over one million people in 100 countries. Affordable housing in Vermont is increasingly difficult to find in Vermont, and the work of Vermont’s eight active Habitat affiliates is very necessary and challenging. To be chosen as Habitat partners, families have to meet the organization’s criteria for selection, including financial stability, income guidelines, residency requirements, and a willingness to be a responsible Habitat partner. Each adult in a Habitat family commits to spend a minimum of 250 hours of time, working side by side with volunteers to build their new home. When a home is completed, Habitat conveys an interest free mortgage, with monthly payments established so housing costs, mortgage, taxes, and insurance do not exceed more that thirty percent of the family’s annual income. In turn, the mortgage payments help Habitat to build more homes in our area. Earth Day Event Offers a Day of Free Family Fun!

The Eastern Rensselaer County Solid Waste Management Authority and the ERC Community Warehouse will host their 12th Annual Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Celebration, being held at the ERC Community Warehouse on Route 22 in Hoosick Falls, promises to be a fun-filled event that the entire family will enjoy. The Salem Courthouse Expands Programs for Youth

The Historic Salem Courthouse Preservation Association has been hard at work transforming the courthouse complex into the“Courthouse Community Center”. Striving to serve the needs of the public, the Courthouse has expanded their Lunch n’ Learn offering for the summer of 2009. This outstanding enrichment program is organized by HSCPA Vice President, Herb Perkins, and local educators, Stacy Parker and Kim Gariepy. It provides on the average of sixty children with a variety of activities in the areas of reading, writing, science, art and physical activities. Thursdays are spent at the Bancroft Public Library, and a diverse offering of guests enhance the subject matter each day. A nutritious and well-balanced lunch is provided to each child daily. This inspiring program is open to children from K through 6th grade at no charge. In the past, Lunch n’ Learn has been offered for five weeks, three days a week, three hours per day. Due to generous gifts from the Salem Rotary, the Shoppe Off Broadway, Stewarts Holiday Match Fund and the National Peanut Board, Lunch n’ Learn will be expanded this year. The 2009 Lunch n’ Learn program will commence on Monday, July 6th and run for six weeks through Friday, August 14. The program will be offered Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Also focusing on the youth of the area is a group of enthusiastic Salem residents who are working with town and village officials to form a Youth Commission. This effort was initiated back in January by HSCPA Vice President, Herb Perkins and dedicated Courthouse volunteer, Bob Benn. The Youth Commission Development Committee is currently seeking interested individuals representing various aspects of the community who are willing to contribute to a worthy cause. 150th Anniversary Williams vs. Amherst Print Chosen

Mayor James M. Ruberto announced today that Pittsfield artist Ralph Frisina’s art work has been selected to be the official print for the 150th Anniversary Williams vs. Amherst game on May 3, 2009. He was the winner of a design contest to create a memorable poster image to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first ever intercollegiate baseball game, which was held in Pittsfield. Mr. Frisina is the Chief Creative Officer of Winstanley Associates in Lenox, where his work has received over 90 design awards in his twenty years with the company. Previously he worked for Colopy Dale studios in Pittsburgh serving clients such as Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein. His winning print will be featured on the cover of the commemorative program, made into posters, and will have a permanent home at the College Baseball Hall of Fame. The 150th Anniversary Game weekend is scheduled for May 2 & 3, 2009 at historic Wahconah Ballpark in Pittsfield. On Saturday, May 2, the Dan Duquette Sports Academy will host free (is that correct?) College Baseball Hall of Fame baseball clinics at 2 p.m. for boys and girls ages 8-14. All Leagues including Little League, Cal Ripken, and Babe Ruth are welcome to attend. On Sunday, May 3 at 11 a.m. a vintage baseball game recreating the original 1859 game will be played between alumni of Williams and Amherst. At 1:05 p.m. the current Williams and Amherst College teams will play again, as they did 150 years ago in Pittsfield. The pre-game ceremonies begin at 12:45 p.m., recognizing Pittsfield as the birthplace of College Baseball, commemorating the first game, and recognizing Alumni and community members. The Rev. Margo Fletcher, Deacon, to be Ordained a Priest

By the grace of God and on behalf of God’s people, the Right Rev. Thomas C. Ely, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont, will ordain Margaret Anne Laurie Fletcher to the Sacred Order of Priests in Christ’s Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at 4:30 p.m. at St. Thomas & Grace Episcopal Church, Brandon, VT. Ordination is the rite in which God gives authority and the grace of the Holy Spirit to those being made bishops, priests, and deacons through prayer and the laying on of hands by bishops. (Book of Common Prayer, p. 860861) In the Episcopal Church, Ordination is considered a sacrament that has evolved in the church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and has continued an unbroken line from St. Peter and the apostles. Margaret Ann Laurie Fletcher was ordained a deacon on Feb. 2, 2008, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Bennington. As a Deacon, she worked at St. John’s Episcopal Church, North Adams, MA, until being called to St. Thomas & Grace Episcopal Church in Brandon. Deacon Margo completed the Discernment Process at St. Peter’s Church, Bennington, and was sponsored for ordination to the Diaconate by members of St. Peter’s Parish. Many people from St. Peter’s Parish will participate in the Ordination Rite on April 18 in Brandon. St. Peter’s Choir and Contemporary Ensemble under the direction of OrganistChoirmaster Randall Krum will participate in the musical offerings for the Ordination. After ordination, Margo will perform sacramental and pastoral duties at St. Thomas & Grace Church.

Ten Minute Play Festival The New England Youth Theater, in collaboration with Westminster’s Compass School, presents the Compass School Ten Minute Play Festival on April 16. A selection of short plays written by ninth and tenth grade Humanities students at Compass School as a class assignment will soon be coming to life on the NEYT stage. The plays were written as part of a trimester focused on creative expression in which each student was challenged to create interesting characters and believable dialogue--all within ten pages. A dozen of the plays written in the class were submitted to a committee of actors and directors at NEYT, who then chose their six favorites. The plays, which run the gamut from the farcical to the hauntingly sad, will be directed and performed by New England Youth Theater faculty

and students. Compass School’s curriculum is built around public exhibition of student work and these students were uniquely motivated by a desire to see their plays performed. In addition to the NEYT show, the entire Compass Humanities class will display their artwork and perform their poems and plays on May 1st at the Latchis 4 Gallery in Brattleboro for Gallery Walk. The single performance of the Compass Play Festival is presented on Thursday, April 16 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $5, available only at the door. The New England Youth Theatre is located at 100 Flat Street in Brattleboro, VT.
