HFCS Students’ Letters Reach Presidents Bush and Obama

Students in Mrs. Burdick’s Third Grade class at Hoosick Falls Central School wrote letters to President Bush in November, thanking him for his term of service and givng him ideas for his retirement. Letters of congratulations, citing his win in our school election, were also sent to President-elect Obama, through a book contest held by Random House. The class was so surprised when, out of over two thousand nationallysent letters, three of our letters were selected for the last round, and two were to be in the final print! Michaela Telford, and Ryan Landry are now published authors! It’s a great book, too, now in bookstores! The students are being honored May 18 in Hoosick Falls. Next HFCS PTA Meeting

The next business meeting of the HFCS PTA will take place on Wednesday, May 20, in the Elementary School Library beginning at 6:30 p.m. In addition to other business items, the group will accept nominations for and vote on 200910 officer positions and discuss plans for the year-end thankyou-to-volunteers celebration scheduled for June 10. Army Pvt. Steven C. Walsh has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. He is the son of William Walsh of Bennington, Vermont. Walsh is a 2007 graduate of Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington. _____________________ (“Wizard of Oz” cont.) than you bargained for. 25th annual Wood Memorial Road Race

The town of Hoosick Lions Club’s 25th annual Wood Memorial 5K Road Race will be held in Hoosick Falls, NY, on Saturday, May 16. Each year nearly 100 runners participate in the Wood Memorial Race as well as many spectators being on hand for the event. The 5K race starts at 9 a.m. in front of the former Bunker Hill Store on the corner of Munsell and High Streets and finishes in front of Wood Memorial Park. The 5K course runs from Munsell Street to Abbott Street to Classic Street, down to Main Street, to Hill Road where it will loop back returning to Main Street and the finish line in front of the Wood Memorial Park. There will also be a 1-mile Fun Run which will start after the conclusion of the 5K race at approximately 10 a.m. in front of the Wood Memorial Park and running along Main Street to Hill Road where it loops back, returning to Main Street and the front of Wood Memorial Park. Registration for the Fun Run is in the park by 9:40 a.m. Registration for the 5K race will be held from 7 to 8:40 a.m. the day of the race. Those who choose not to enter are invited to come and cheer on the racers. ________________________________________________

Applications Accepted for the Battenkill Conservancy Internship Program

Battenkill Conservancy River Watch Coordinator Kelly Nolan and BC Board Members announced that applications are now being taken from science major college students to conduct the Lotic Scene Investigation (or LSI) program module three on the Battenkill. The application deadline is May 29th, 2009. The application form can be downloaded from our Web site www.battenkillconservancy.net. LSI is the systematic approach to evaluating biological effects of human impacts on a freshwater stream environment, with the intention of using the scientific data to assess environmental quality. Scholarship funding may be available. This course is designed for science majors who have a strong interest in freshwater aquatic science, environmental science, and ecology. It consists of three modules that promote conceptual thinking, decision-making and practical skills: lecture, field and indoor lab work, and residential field station experience. It also requires at least 72 working hours, most of which occurs during residencies at two different biological field research stations. Past years students conducted a thorough study of the Battenkill “aquatic life” by collecting benthic macroinvertebrates (bottom dwelling insect larvae). The community structure and diversity of insects collected provides information on the type and the degree of the biological effects that human impacts may have on the river. Funding for this scholarship is provided by Battenkill Conservancy’s members and donors. By giving some deserving students a precious May 13, 2009

research opportunity, we not only build awareness on the plight of one of our most precious local natural resources, but also invest on the future of the Battenkill and its watershed. UCS Sponsors NAMI Walk for Mental Health

United Counseling Service is sponsoring a 3-mile walk in Bennington on Saturday, May 16. Anyone can come and walk. The purpose is to fight the stigma about mental illness, and to build awareness that mental health care is inadequate.The walk will also raise money for UCS summer programming and the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Join colleagues, friends, families, and neighbors and come walk! Preregistration begins at 10:30 a.m. at UCS, 316 Dewey Street. Bridget Pierce Named HACA Volunteer of the Year 2009

At its annual Appreciation Brunch on Saturday, April 25, Hoosick Area Church Association (HACA) Volunteer Coordinator Dianne Hosterman presented Bridget Pierce with the Volunteer of the Year award. Bridget is past president of HACA. She led the association through the incorporation process in 1995, along with HACA officers Rev. Jim Peterson, Rev. Gordon Luther and Rev. Mike Benoit. Bridget works at the Hoosick Falls Food Closet two Wednesday evenings a month and tallies the monthly Regional Food Bank report. She has been an active Food Closet volunteer for close to 20 years. The Annual Youth Award went to the Hoosick Falls Girl and Boy Scout troops. This included the Hoosick Falls Girl Scouts, Daisy Troop 1259, Brownie Troops 12850 and 1104, Junior Troops 1089 and 1144, Cadette and older Troops 1313, 1376 and 1415 and Boy Scouts Troops 63 and 64 for their support of the Food Closet. the Boy Scouts conduct a food drive in November and the Girl Scouts in April. The Girl Scouts also planted flowers last spring at the HACA Ministry Center and decorated the inside, including the tree, for Christmas. The Partnership Award is given annually to a business or organization which has supported HACA throughout the year. This year’s award went to the Grand Union Family Markets for their weekly collection of food and the monitary matching fund program they conduct throughout the year. Stephentown Historical Society Seeks Goods For Tag Sale

As you do spring cleaning chores, remember that your cast-offs might be someone else’s treasure. Your used items can help support the Stephentown Historical Society. Their twelfth annual Community Tag Sale will be Saturday, July 25. Your donation of clean, useable items will help support their programs. You think you’re so smart because you wrote to the Senate and the Congress on account’a you don’t like the shake-down we’ve been giving the world!! Ha, ha! Well, they’re on MY side, see! Congress is in MY hip pocket. Yeah, see! SEE! So you think just because your tax dollars bailed me out that I can’t turn around and hike your interest rates on credit cards to 30 percent? Ha, ha!! Remember my hip pocket, YOU LOSERS! And even if they DO pass some sort of mealy-mouth legislation, I won’t have to comply with their new rules for ANOTHER YEAR!! Imagine all the skimming I can do in a year! Ha, ha! Suckers! I have so many tax write-offs around the world it would take a lifetime to find all of them! Ha, ha, ha!!! RATTA-TATT-TAT-RAT-A-TAT-TAT...Hear that? That’s Tom Gun shooting holes in the common sense proposals from congressmen who are ‘trying’ to be honest ! Ha, ha. Ha, ha, ha! Sooner or later, I’ll get them in the old hip pocket, too! Suckers! I want that 30 percent, and I want it NOW! Second Chance Animal Center Summer Camp has Openings

Purrs, Barks, Feathers and Fun are all part of the summer camp program sponsored by Second Chance Animal Center for children aged 7 to 12. The camp has openings for the weeks of July 6-10; July 13-17; July 20-24; and July 27-31. The four week-long sessions feature different themes. This summer Sessions I and IV feature the popular theme “It’s Raining Cats and Dogs”. Session II will be “Feathered Friends”, while Session III centers on “Farm Adventures.” In every session campers will learn about responsible pet partnership, socializing daily with the animals at the Shelter as well as pet camp animals. Daily activities include nature hikes and swimming at beautiful Lake Shaftsbury in addition to day trips to area sites that feature animals or birds. Camp co-directors are Nadine Rorden and Laura Sprague, both of whom are employed at Manchester Elementary School. Ms. Rorden ran the Manchester Park and Recreation Center summer program for several years and co-directed Second Chance summer program last year. Ms. Sprague is a para-professional at MEMS and works with special needs children. The camp is located in the barn across from the Animal Center on May 13, 2009

Arlington Garden Club

Valerie Cleary, one of the most in-demand authorities in the country on the art of flower arranging, will present a design demonstration and workshop when the Arlington Garden Club meets at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, at Christ Our Savior Parish Center in Arlington. Mrs. Cleary, a three-time president of the Rutland Garden Club, is head of the Vermont State Judges Council, and a popular flower show judge for many years. This program is a prelude to a standard flower show entitled “Christmas in July” which Club members will present for the public on Saturday, July 18. Club efforts are being concentrated now on plans for the annual Plant and Food sale to be held on Saturday, May 23, at the red-brick Community House on Main Street in the heart of Arlington Village. Vermont-grown perennials will be featured, along with potted herbs and an assortment of vegetable plants. Club members will offer some special plants from their own gardens as well. Local Habitat Selects Next Family

The Bennington Area Habitat for Humanity Affiliate plans to start their tenth home in May. The home is located on Asa’s Way, off Route 67A, in North Bennington. Weather permitting volunteers will work on the house for the first time on Saturday, May 16. Once started, Habitat will build every Wednesday and Saturday from 8:30 to 3 until the home is done. Jennifer and Patrick Siegrist and their three children, Rebecca, Taylor, and Mariah, 2, 8, and 13, of Bennington will help build their new home. The Siegrist family has lived and worked in the area for the last fifteen years. Speaking about their new home, Patrick wrote, “It’s amazing how our excitement is growing with every passing day, and I’m sure this is only the beginning. Jennifer and I agree that, if you believe in your dreams and have faith, not only will you have those dreams fulfilled, but more-so than ever imagined.” The Siegrist home, including the purchase of the land, will cost close to $125,000. Skilled and unskilled volunteers help make the home affordable by contributing almost all of the labor. The affiliate will continue to seek funds this spring and summer from individuals and area businesses for the home. Families have to meet the organization’s criteria for selection, including financial stability, income guidelines, residency requirements, and a willingness to be a responsible Habitat partner. Each adult in a Habitat family commits to spend a minimum of 250 hours of time, working side by side with volunteers to build their new home. When a home is completed, Habitat conveys an interest free mortgage, with monthly payments established so housing costs, mortgage, taxes, and insurance do not exceed more than thirty percent of the family’s annual income. In turn, mortgage payments help Habitat to build more homes in our area. Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to provide safe, decent, and affordable housing for all people worldwide. This past fall Habitat completed its 325,000th home and now provides housing for over one million people in 100 countries. Affordable housing is increasingly difficult to find in Vermont, and the work of Vermont’s eight active Habitat affiliates is very necessary and challenging. In March 2009, The Vermont Housing Council released “Between a Rock and a Hard Place,” a report that documents how the shortage of affordable housing is hurting Vermont. Starlight Stage Accepting Applications For 33rd Season

Starlight Stage Youth Theatre is now accepting applications for its 33rd anniversary season, June 29-August 2. ounded in 1976, Starlight offers a hands-on theatre experience for young people ages 8-18. The tuition-based program operates from 8:30 a.m-12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the First Congregational Church on Main Street (Rt. 2) in Williamstown. The church is right on the BRTA route and is handicap accessible. Over the course of five weeks of rehearsal the company stages a full production which is open to the general public for four evening performances. Starlight has been directed by Robert Y. Burns and the Burns family of Williamstown since its inception. Starlight is the third oldest continuously operating summer theatre in Berkshire County, after the Berkshire Theatre Festival and the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Over the past 33 years hundreds of local youngsters have received their introduction to theatre with Starlight. Saturday, April 25 was a day made for celebration, when eight exceptional Green Mountain RSVP volunteers made their way to Montpelier to be presented with Outstanding Community Service Awards by Governor James Douglas. Some traveled via a Green Mountain Express bus, while others made their way by car. The impressive group gathered high on a hill at the National Life Building to receive their commendations. The Governor was highly complimentary of volunteering, which he feels allows Vermont to accomplish far beyond what might be expected of such a small state. National Awards were presented to Fran Hunt who operates the Red Cross Blood Drive at the Baptist Church in Bennington every other month and Nina Fersen who volunteers for the Center for Restorative Justice in Bennington and serves on their board. Betty Haggerty from Windham County received an award for her devotion to the Drop in Center in Brattleboro, and Maria Contro from Windsor County was awarded for her tireless work at the Springfield Meals on Wheels Program. Family awards went to Bob and Lucille Evens from Windsor County, who serve at many organizations in Cavendish and Springfield, and Gil and Nina Rodriguez from Bennington County who have both volunteered at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center for the past 14 years. A Lifetime Service Award was presented posthumously to Mildred “Millie” Katz for her continuous focus on volunteering from a very young age, until her death on March 9th of this year. Millie volunteered in Bennington, and her award was given to her sons.

Two local state parks will kick off their summer season on Memorial Day weekend, opening for swimming, boating, hiking and countless other recreational opportunities. Grafton Lakes and Cherry Plain State Parks, in Rensselaer County, NY, open for the season on Saturday, May 23. The sandy beach at Grafton Lakes will be open Friday-Tuesday, May 23 through Labor Day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cherry Plain State Park will offer swimming on weekends only from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., May 23 through June 21. From June 27 through Labor Day, Cherry Plain State Park’s beach schedule will be Wednesday-Sunday and Labor Day from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Both beach areas are equipped with comfort stations. Grafton Lake’s swimming area and bathhouses are handicapped-accessible. Grafton Lakes and Cherry Plain State Parks offer many boating opportunities including canoeing, rowing, kayaking, sailing and the use of electric powered motors. Rowboats and paddleboats are available for rental at both facilities. Canoes and kayaks may also be rented at Grafton Lakes. All boat rentals are available only when the beach is open, but the public may launch their own boats during park open hours from designated boat launches. Both parks also offer numerous hiking trails and excellent fishing opportunities. For summer fun enthusiasts, Grafton Lakes has playgrounds, a softball field, volleyball nets, horseshoe pits and a basketball court as well as a variety of day use tent and pavilion rentals. Wardsboro’s Annual Plant Sale

April showers bring May flowers, and this year volunteers from the Friends of the Wardsboro Library are helping Mother Nature with her job. In a little greenhouse high on a hill in Wardsboro, multitudes of heirloom seedlings are magically metamorphosing into healthy young plants which will be sold at the upcoming annual Plant Sale slated to be held on the Wardsboro Town Common during Memorial Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 23 and 24, rain or shine, beginning at 9 a.m. Along with the usual selection of favorites, the greenhouse plants will add an interesting variety of herbs, grown since civilization began, for their nutritional values and medicinal purposes. Anise, hyssop, woodruff, cilantro, to name only a few, and a large selection of heirloom vegetables will be the center attractions of the yearly fundraiser. There will also be hanging baskets, and flats of flowers as well as a great variety of home-grown hardy perennials. Bird Walks at Canoe Meadows

The meadows, forests, and wetlands of Canoe Meadows provide a variety of habitats that attract many birds. We will walk through these habitats in order to observe the changing birdlife. Jr. Team Tennis Registration

Looking for 10 to 18 year old tennis players interested in playing competitive level tennis. The Northshire Community Tennis Association will be offering team tennis for juniors this summer. The program will be run from June 29 to August 18. Practices will be held on Monday and matches will be played weekly, Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. Rain date will be on Thursdays. Regional playoffs are scheduled for August 6 and qualifying teams will play at state championships on Aug 18 and 19. NCTA will have three travel teams and a development team. Each match consists of two boys’ singles, two girls’ singles, one boys’ doubles, one girl’s doubles and one mixed doubles. High school players and USTA tournament level players are encouraged to participate in addition to anyone else looking for competitive match play although tournament level play is not a requirement. Everyone will need a USTA number to participate in addition to the $140 program fee. Scholarships are available based on financial need. Last year both U14 and U18 teams were finalists at regional playoffs. It is not necessary to attend every week as we expect participants to have other summer vacation plans. OLLI Showcases Members’ Art at Free Local Show

It’s no surprise that people who choose to live in the Berkshires often have a great appreciation for the arts. With its wealth of cultural possibilities, the Berkshires is a natural magnet for art lovers. Many local residents are accomplished artists in their own right, but may not have had a chance to share their talents with others. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of Berkshire Community College (OLLI), an organization that provides courses, lectures, special events and more throughout the year to Berkshire residents, is hosting an Open House and Art Show, featuring the artistic talents of its members. In thhis members-only show painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelry designers, and others will show off their talents to the public. Many of the artworks in the show are for sale. OLLI’s Art Show will showcase the works of more than 35 OLLI members who reside all over the Berkshires. The show also launches OLLI’s Summer Semester 2009. Top of the World: Paintings & Artist’s Books by Ken Leslie

Now through June 14, the Bennington Museum will have on exhibit in the Regional Arts Gallery Top of the World, Paintings and Artist’s Books of the Arctic and Vermont. Featured in this exhibition of works by Ken Leslie is Inari Winter Cycle, an artist’s book created in watercolor on folded paper, 52” in diameter. During the Winter Solstice in 2009 in Inari, Finland, Leslie developed one page per hour during the twenty four hour period, unfolding a full array of the winter sky. Special thanks to the American-Scandinavian Foundation and to Johnson State College for support of this project. In addition to Leslie’s exhibition in the Regional Arts Gallery, Sky Journal, watercolor on paper, will be on view in the Ada Paresky Education Center now through June 21 as part of June Arts Programn co-sponsored the Bennington Cultural and Arts Council and the Bennington Museum. This large, unusual piece also documents changes in the sky over time. A resident of upstate Vermont, Leslie has been a Johnson State College faculty member since 1984, and has spent his artistic career crossing boundaries. Reaching far beyond the conventional painting form, he began folding the paintings to accentuate their narrative sequences which resulted in the artist’s books. Since that time, Leslie has specialized in making limited-edition and one-of-a-kind artist’s books, ranging in size from two inches to ten feet and including not only painting but writings on a variety of themes. On Sunday, May 24, 2009 the historic Park McCullough House in North Bennington, Vermont will be alive with music from the ages. This all-day music event will feature many of the talented and internationally known musicians who have performed during Park McCullough’s acclaimed “Summer Sundays at Four” classical and contemporary concert series over the past 20 years. Service Notes

Air Force Airman Jake A. Perez graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Darcy and Duane Beach of Meadow Road, Hudson Falls, N.Y. Perez is a 2006 graduate of Hudson Falls Senior High School.

Austin has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical

fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. Austin is the grandson of Karen Austin of Furnace St., Poultney, Vt. The private graduated in 2009 from Poultney High School. Army National Guard Pvt. Caydon J. Sieverding has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Shawn Trout has been promoted to the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army. Cpt. Shawn Trout is the Executive Officer for Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 704 BSB ,4BCT,4ID Fort Carson Colorado. He deploys to Afghanistan in April. This will be his second deployment to the Middle East. Shawn graduated from Arlington Memorial High School in 2000, and received a Bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree from Norwich University in 2005. Both his father Steve Trout of West Rupert and mother Bonnie Trout of Sunderland are very proud of him.

President Harry S. Truman led the eﬀort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days.The single-day celebration stemmed from the uniﬁcation of the Armed Forces under one department - the Department of Defense.
