The Chesterfield Historical Society meeting will be held Thursday, June 18. The program topic is “Building a Town in a Swamp; the Bridges of Westfield”. Berkshire Serve, formerly Berkshire SHARE offers affordable, high quality food for discount store prices. A chapter of Serve New England, a food co-op, Berkshire Serve has several food packages available. The orders and money must be in by Thursday June 11 in North Adams, Wednesday, June 10 in Bennington and Friday, June 12 in Dalton and Great Barrington. Food pick-up date for all chapters is Saturday, June 27. This month’s $26 “regular” package contains: hamburger patties, teriyaki steak kabobs, lemon and pepper chicken kabobs, Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches, potatoes, onions, carrots, salad mix, radishes, apples, bananas, plums, and peaches. Other packages include; BBQ ribs for $18, eight pounds of chicken tenders for $12 and the famous sirloin strip steaks for $20. The North Adams office of Berkshire Serve is staffed only on Thursdays, 2-6 p.m., at St John’s Church through the red door on the parking lot side of the building. Call 413-664-7400. The Scarlett Creation on Main Street, Bennington, held two raffles, one to benefit one of the local food shelves and one to benefit Bennington breast cancer research. The winner of the flower lap quilt to benefit breast cancer research was Marian Raport of Pownal and the winner of the basket lap quilt to benefit the food shelf was Irene Hackett of Woodford. From my Corner

—Susan J. Coons ...sense of direction... By the time you’re 67 (as I am) your hair follicles lose their sense of direction, or maybe they just don’t want to travel too far. That’s what has happened to me. They now appear on my chin instead of my legs. While I was accustomed to shaving my legs, I’m not accustomed to shaving my chin! My daughter and I were shopping at Target in Latham about a month ago and I was telling her about my ‘hairy’ situation. Of course, she had noticed it herself, as probably everyone else who comes within two feet of my face (that’s if they’re wearing their glasses!). She immediately escorted me to the waxing section and handed me a product she said she has used in the past. Said it was pretty much pain free. (I’ve heard lots of tales about painful wax removal!) I waited several weeks to try this out. I’m not one to primp, nor am I one who wants to inflict pain, especially on myself! So, a few weeks later, on a Wednesday evening when she stayed over, I said “Why don’t we give it a try!” She microwaved the wax, making it kind of hot to the touch...brought it into the den and proceeded to apply it to my chin with a small ice cream stick.

It dripped onto my chest and nightie. I immediately tried to wipe it off my chest and got it on my fingers. Do you know the story of Brer’ Fox, Brer’ Rabbit and the Tar Baby?? Well, that was me. Everything I touched became sticky with wax! The remote control; the telephone; my glass; both of my hands.... The wax was supposed to dry. It didn’t. I picked up a tablet by the phone and began to fan my chin. Still didn’t dry and all I had left was a sticky note pad! The situation reminded us of Chevy Chase in the movie “Christmas Vacation” when he had sap on his fingers and tried to read a magazine and later turn out the light! Catherine said, “Let’s get the hair dryer!” Absolutely not! Pictures of “House of Wax” horror came to my mind. Of course, we were laughing hysterically during this half hour of misery! Fortunately, a bottle of oil came with the package and after giving up all hope of the wax drying, we used it to remove the mess from my chin. Fast forward to this week...I had to cancel an appointment to have my hair cut because of a computer situation here at work (server down!) and my next appointment won’t be until the end of June. My daughter offered to cut my hair! If she trims hair the way she trims a shrub, which is just about down to the dirt, I don’t think so.

Jamming at the Bennington Station

One night in 1998, Billy Bratcher (slap bass artist and song writer) from Bennington, invited Danny Coane (guitarist) and Big Al Lemery (guitarist and singer) over to his digs in Burlington to jam. Some awesome sounds started happening that night, and soon after the Starline Rhythm Boys were born. They’ve been packing them in ever since. For the fifth straight year, as part of the Bennington Cultural & Arts Council June Arts Events, they will once again play in Bennington. They will be performing songs from their CDs and LP that are distributed all around the world. Vermont Magazine has dubbed them “Vermont’s House Band” because they perform in so many small towns all over the state. Joining them this year is steel guitarist and dobro player Kevin Maul. Kevin has been heard on the Garrison Keillor show many times with Robin and Linda Williams. Starline has played with national acts as well — Ricky Scaggs, Del M’coury, Charlie Danials, and Junior Brown, to name a few. This year, Chef Bob Andrews of the Bennington Station has invited them to appear in the Station’s beautiful new tavern/bistro with a great menu and microbrew list. This will be a toe tapping evening not to be missed. The Starline Rhythm Boys have spent the past ten and a half years blending and perfecting their rockabilly sound. Come hear them on Friday night, June 12, from 9 p.m. ‘til midnight at the Bennington Station, 150 Depot Street, Bennington. On Wednesday, August 5, 2009, the ROUSE Organization will hold a picnic at Grafton State Park in the Deerfield Pavilion. 1st Annual Schaghticoke Car Show

The congregation of West Hebron United Presbyterian Church is celebrating the fact that eleven of its members have been a part of the congregation for more than 50 years. Celebrating Old Glory

The Town of Hoosick, Friends of the Bennington Battlefield and Vintage Voices are pleased to announce that the Hoosick Falls Community Band, directed by Bill Gaillard, will be performing patriotic songs at the Barnett Homestead on Flag Day, June 14. The formal program begins at 2 p.m. with the singing of the National Anthem by Mary Stedman. The event runs from 1 to 4 p.m. One of the activities planned for children will be the making of get well cards under the direction of Ronnie Bach of Vintage Voices. These cards will be delivered to the veterans at the Vermont Veterans’ Home in Bennington. Other flag activities will be the presentation of the history of the American Flag by Phyllis Chapman and the designing of their own flag. The “Stars and Stripes”, the official national symbol of the United States of American was authorized by Congress on Saturday of June 14, 1777. What better way to pay tribute to America and to teach our children about the history of the flag and the important role that our area plays in the founding of our nation, than to spend an afternoon at the Bennington Battlefield State Historic site in Walloomsac, NY which was the site of one of the most important battles of our fight for independence on August 16, 1777. The Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site is owned by New York Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and managed through a cooperative agreement between State Parks and the Town of Hoosick. ________________________________________________

Bennington Beledi Tribal Bellydance presents an evening of bellydance featuring Sahidi Sisters, Sisters of the Shawl, and special guests Shroud, Shakti!, Cyndal Ellis and friends and Susanne Claxton. The event will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Meetinghouse, 108 School Street in Bennington, on Saturday, June 13. Performances begin at 6:30 p.m. Dancer Cyndal Ellis is a recent graduate of Smith College, majoring in anthropology and dance. She’s been exploring various forms of bellydance for over three years under the guidance of Pacita Prasarn and Donna Mejia, and she’s studied modern dance on and off for 15 years. Shroud is an industrial tribal fusion duo. Dancers Alicia Malay and Joann Larson have background in both cabaret and tribal belly dance as well as an interest in other dance forms. Combining those dance moves with industrial/gothic music and a dark sensibility they formed Shroud. Currently a professor of philosophy and the tribal dance instructor at Green Mountain College, Susanne Claxton was first enchanted by bellydance as a little girl while living in Isfahan, Iran. Susanne most recently spent some years in Albuquerque, New Mexico where she fell in love with American Tribal Style and Tribal Fusion bellydance. Having both a professional and personal interest in goddess spiritualities, embodiment philosophies, ecofeminism, and existential freedom, Susanne sees Tribal Bellydance as an art and practice capable of bringing about radical transformation of spirit, evolution of consciousness and real empowerment to help and heal self, others and the planet.
