Charles Metz studied piano at Penn State University, beginning his harpsichord studies through private lessons with the legendary Igor Kipnis. In the process of earning a Ph.D. in Historical Performance Practice at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri, he studied with Trevor Pinnock. More recently, Metz has worked with Lisa Crawford and Webb Wiggins at the Oberlin Conservatory. He plays regularly in Saint Louis with viola da gambist Elizabeth Macdonald and in ensembles including The Bach Society of Saint Louis, The Masterworks Chorale, Collegium Vocale and the Saint Louis Baroque. Rachel Cuite Trio Performs at Summer Sounds of Salem

The Rachel Cuite Trio, a Cambridge-based jazz trio, will open the Summer Sounds of Salem concert series on Saturday, June 20. The free concert begins at 11 a.m., and takes place at the gazebo on Main Street in Salem, during the weekly farmers’ market. The trio features lively and sensitive takes on standards from the Great American Songbook. The Rachel Cuite Trio formed in 2005 when Rachel and Dave Cuite moved from Brooklyn to Cambridge and hooked up with Saratogabased guitarist Tico Vogt. Dave, a Cambridge native, had been performing regularly as part of the Leisure Kings, a jazz quintet in New York City that featured wife Rachel’s smooth and soulful vocals, before the couple relocated to Washington County. Tico has been involved in regional and local bands for thirty years, playing a mix of acoustic jazz, folk and original music. The Trio has played at Sheldon Market’s and the Al Fresco weekend. Summer Sounds of Salem, a free outdoor concert series sponsored by the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, features an eclectic mix of music from around the world. She has traveled and photographed in Europe, the Middle East, South America and Africa; her recent work in Kenya and Tanzania is receiving international attention and wide critical acclaim. Dei’s outsized, sepia wildlife images depict the beauty of a world unknown to most. In the BCA show, she will use handmade, rough, cream-colored paper on which to display her digital images. ‘Ready for Battle’ Donated to Bennington Museum

“Ready for Battle,” a key work by Bennington painter Patsy Santo, was recently donated by the artist’s family to the Bennington Museum. It will be on view in the John T. Harrison Jr. Orientation Hall through the summer. A well known work “Ready for Battle” by Patsy Santo showing a snowball fight on School Street, “Ready for Battle” was painted in 1954 and toured internationally in the late 1950s in an exhibition of American artists organized by the Smithsonian Institution. A Swiss review of that show compared the painting’s view of Bennington to Thornton Wilder’s popular play “Our Town.” Noting how much the neat houses and clean streets shared with the Swiss, it offered the knowledgeable comment that “the fun of snow could not be better presented than in this painting.” Patsy Santo emigrated from Italy to the United States in 1913, and for many years lived in Bennington, painting houses in the summer and completing his canvases in the winter. Discovered by the larger art world in the late 1930s, he went on to have a long and successful career as a painter of Vermont scenes. His works are in many public and private collections. Santo’s work was recently included in the exhibition “They Taught Themselves,” mounted this winter by the Galerie St. Etienne in New York. Of Santo’s work in this exhibition, the New York Times wrote that these represented the strength of the self-taught artist as an “assiduous craftsman,” and that the paintings’ vivid portrayals of

the Northeast recalled the ‘Precisionism’ of Charles Sheeler. “Ready for Battle” joins several other Santo canvases in the collection of the Bennington Museum. The Santo Paintings Project, sponsored by the artist’s family, regularly seeks out other Santo works that may be appropriate for the collection. Ethan Allen Days Colonial Fair

The Bennington Rotary Club is presenting Ethan Allen Days Colonial Fair on Father’s Day Weekend, June 20 and 21, at Colgate Park, Bennington. This will be an exciting event for the entire family. Watch battle reenactments, a sutler’s market, activities for children, good food and beverages, vendors, crafts, history and music. Ethan Allen Days originated in West Arlington, and eventually migrated to Sunderland, Vermont where it was “home” for several years. Later the lush Hildene Meadows became the next venue for Ethan Allen Days. However, Hildene has been evolving and changing their mission to that of the Civil War Era. They have branded Hildene the “Lincoln Family Home”. This change left the re-enactors and their event searching for a new location. After visiting several sites in the area, leaders chose Colgate Park as an excellent site for their encampment as well as battle re-enactments. The next task was to find an organization that would present this event. Don Miller, of Bennington Rotary, stepped up, offering to have his organization take up the task. Bennington Rotary is a non-profit organization, raising funds for scholarships and other causes in our local area. Colgate Park is located on Route 9 West in Bennington, Vermont. Pittsﬁeld’s Green Expo

Mayor James M. Ruberto announced the First Annual Pittsfield Green Expo to be held June 18; an initiative of City of Pittsfield’s Green Commission, Center for Ecological Technology, Downtown Inc., and the Department of Cultural Development. The event, sponsored by Harrison Design Associates, will begin at the Berkshire Museum with a panel discussion at 3 p.m. focusing on practical ideas that people can do everyday to help lead a greener life – including a green-minded local food movement, ways to make your home more efficient, and more fuel-efficient transportation. Well-known local environmentalists have teamed up to be speakers on the panel, including: Barbara Zheutlin with Berkshire Grown, Chris Swindlehurst, a biodiesel specialist, Al Silverstein the Co-Director for the Center for Ecological Technology, and Crispina French of the Alchemy Initiative. This event is free and open to the public. Those attending will also receive a tour of the Berkshire Museum’s new exhibit: “Frogs: A Chorus of Colors”. “The Pittsfield Green Expo is a great event to kick off the summer,” said Mayor Ruberto.“With the knowledgeable panel of speakers and the Green vendors from around Berkshire County, all that come to downtown Pittsfield will be able to leave with great tips and easy things they can do, because “it is easy being Green.” At 5 p.m., during Third Thursday, Green vendors will locate on Dunham Mall, located in front of City Hall, to showcase Green Companies. Popular Full Moon Run Celebrates 10th Running

Water power was used for centuries to grind grain, mill lumber and for other mechanical applications. Now, modern, highly efficient turbines can convert the energy of falling or flowing water to generate electricity. The feasibility and permitting for potential small hydro sites will be the topic of a presentation by Ben Gordesky, founder of Earthbound Services, LLC of Burlington, VT. Mr. Gordesky has an M.S. in hydrogeology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and eight years of experience in the civil engineering and environmental consulting fields. He is a graduate of the Solar Energy International Micro Hydro course. The annual “Moonlight in Vermont” midnight road race returns the night of Saturday, July 11, giving area runners the unique opportunity to compete under the light of the full moon. The four-mile event begins at the stroke of midnight from the Pownal Valley fire station at the top of the hill on Route 7 in Pownal Center. The course follows secondary paved and dirt roads through the hills and dales of rural Pownal, with luminaries positioned at regular intervals to keep runners on course. Awards will be given to overall male and female winners, as well as the top three finishers in seven age categories. In addition, prizes will be awarded to the youngest runner and the runner judged “Most Visible in the Moonlight.” Commemorative T-shirts will be given to pre-registered entrants, and refreshments will be available after the race. Checkin begins at 10:30 p.m. Records for the course are held by Jonathon Volpi (21:18, set in 2007) and Suze West (25:57, established during the inaugural Moonlight run in 1998). The race is organized by the Batten Kill Valley Runners and the Pownal Valley Fire Department and is sponsored in part by Vermont Moonlight Cookies of Shaftsbury. The pre-registration entry fee is $13 and $15 on race night. BKVR members and students receive a $3 discount. Race applications are available at www.bkvr.org. ‘My Life in Ruins’

Georgia’s love life and career have hit a wall in America, so she takes a trip to her ancestral home of Greece and gets a job as a tour guide on a rickety bus in Athens. Her insistence on spouting off endless historical facts tends to bore the tourists, however, and she becomes the least-popular guide and the target of a ruthless competitor. But as she navigates her way through the ruins of the country and her own life, she manages to find new friends, a new outlook and romance where she least expected it. WHO’S IN IT? It seemed only natural after the blockbuster success of My Big Fat Greek Wedding (still the most profitable romantic comedy of all time) that its star, Nia Vardalos, would attempt a sequel. But after a failed attempt at a sitcom, My Life in Ruins is about as close as she’s going to come. As Georgia, a no-nonsense tour guide whose life is slowly transformed by the wonders of Greece, Vardalos is right at home. She’s attractive, likeable and could probably do this role in her sleep. As her unkempt bus driver who turns from a frog into a prince, �� Alexis Georgoulis is the epitome �� of Greek geek. Getting the pole �� tourist position as Irv, Richard �� Dreyfuss is warm and corny as a �� bad-joke-telling widower. The rest �� of the bus is intentionally paired �� off into various two-note stereo�� types. Take your pick. There are �� obnoxious Americans (Harland �� Williams and Rachel Dratch), obnoxious Australians (Simon �� Gleeson and Natalie O’Donnell), �� obnoxious Brits (Ian Ogilvy and �� Caroline Goodall) with an obnox�� ious daughter (Sophie Stuckey). As Georgia’s scheming rival tour �� guide, Alistair McGowan also plays �� it just the way we expect. No sur�� prises with this group. ��

New Espresso Bar in Greenwich, NY

You don’t have to whisper “buttermilk” or declare your blood type to cross the threshold at Some Like It Hot Espresso Bar (see iconic Billy Wilder comedy of same name for references), the thriving new Greenwich eatery at 93 Main St. Simply arrive hungry and be ready to gab with your neighbors at the nearby table. Some Like it Hot, which will have its official opening Saturday, June 20, during Greenwich’s Whipple City Festival weekend, has been satisfying an enthusiastic clientele since mid-May. Expanded summer hours are already in place. The proprietor, Kirk Loe, is a Greenwich resident, as is his chef, Ellen Woodhouse. Loe percolated his restaurateur skills as a barista in Seattle, WA and the manager of an espresso bar in the San Juan Islands. Woodhouse was a co-founder of the former Kenyon Hill Catering and, as the provider of countless team dinners, has introduced most of the student body of Greenwich Central High School to fine dining. Everyday fare at Some Like It Hot includes breakfast (bagels and lox, granola, Southwest burrito, quiche, etc.), lunch (assorted wraps and salads), and daily specials (chicken marsala, pulled pork, chicken lasagna, pot roast, five-cheese macaroni, e.g.) and soups. Vegetarian choices are always available. Tea, coffee, espressos and cappuccinos (and combinations thereof) are served hot and iced. AmeriCorps operates hundreds of programs throughout the United States. Neighbor to Neighbor is a Vermont statewide program that works to help seniors face the challenges of aging with dignity and independence. Members in Vermont serve full time or part time for 11 months. In return for their services, full time members receive a $12,500 living allowance and a $4,725 educational award; part time members receive an $6,250 living allowance and a $2,362 educational award. Bernice Lewis in Concert

Bernice Lewis will appear in concert at Barrett Hall, South Congregational Church, 110 South Street., Pittsfield, on Saturday, June 20 at 8 p.m. Bernice Lewis is a popular locally based folksinger and songwriter. She has been performing for over three decades on contemporary-folk radio, at festivals, coffeehouses, colleges, and house concerts. Over the years she has put out a half dozen critically acclaimed CDs and also built a solid national fan base. Choral Society to present Regards to Broadway!

��

In 1904, when George M. Cohan presented his musical play, “Little Johnny Jones” in New York, the prevailing climate and taste was for European operetta. The new play, including choreographed dance numbers and flag-waving parades, featured the song “Give My Regards to Broadway.” The American characters and subject matter made it stand out, and the catchy songs seemed made for marketing in Tin Pan Alley. Broadway, in the ensuing more-than-a-century has enjoyed several “Golden Ages.” The Bennington County Choral Society is offering a varied program made up of many favorite moments from this history. Edwin Lawrence, Music Director for the society, will conduct. The pianist for this performance will be Jan Burnett. During the 1950s, Broadway seemed dominated by creative teams of composers and lyricists who turned out show after show. Probably best remembered are Rogers and Hammerstein, from whose “The Sound of Music,” “My Favorite Things” will be sung. Lerner and Loewe’s “My Fair Lady” provides “With a Little Bit of Luck,” and “Wouldn’t it be Loverly.” Acting on his own, Meredith Willson created “The Music Man.” The choral society will present the song “Till There Was You” in a special jazz arrangement by Chuck Cassey. Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, also with a substantial early Broadway career, wrote “Mr. President” later in his long productive life in 1962, during the years of the Kennedy White House. The men of the chorus will sing the medley “Mister Cellophane and Razzle Dazzle” from the musical “Chicago,” a 1975 offering by the team of Kander and Ebb. “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd,” by Stephen Sondheim, is from 1979’s musical, “Sweeney Todd.” Another Broadway force, Andrew Lloyd Webber, will be represented by the song “Think of Me,” from the 1986 musical, “The Phantom of the Opera.” Other selections will be sung from newer musicals, including, “The Producers” and “Hairspray,” from 2001, and “Avenue Q” and “Wicked,” from 2003. The performances will be given on Saturday, June 20 at 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday, June 21 at 3:00 at the Second Congregational Church, Hillside Street, Bennington. Tickets, at $10 each, are available at the door. Advance sales are available from the Bennington Bookshop or from any member of the Choral Society. The concert is handicapped accessible.
