Train Registers Returned to North Bennington Train Depot

The Village Trustees of North Bennington accepted a gift of historic Boston and Maine train registers at their May 2009 meeting. The registers were written at the North Bennington Depot which now houses the North Bennington Village offices. The eighteen registers, dating from 1924 until 1930, reflect the height of the “glory” days of railroading in Bennington County. The train registers are a gift to the Village historical collection from Joseph Klapkowski of Highland Falls, New York. Mr. Klapkowski, an active volunteer on the Catskill Mountain Railroad, recognized the uniqueness of the train registers and their day to day picture of an active railroad scene. In addition to providing an idea of who worked on the railroad, the registers recorded the train length, extra sections and second sections of some of each train. The registers speak of day to day operation over a variety of privately owned lines made possible through collective operating agreements. North Bennington, VT served as a critical link in the 1920s.
