The annual Southern Vermont Garlic and Herb Festival will be held at Camelot Village, Route 9 West, in Bennington, Vermont, on Saturday and Sunday, September 5 and 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Cost is adults $5; $1 for children under 12. There is plenty of free parking available. This event is held on private property, so no pets are

Berkshire Serve, responding to the request from many people, now offers convenience packages with 7 different single serving meals for $19. Serve still offers it’s family package for $26. This month’s family package contains ground sausage, teriyaki steak, ground beef, pork chops, potatoes, onions, carrots, peppers, corn, apples, peaches, bananas, marinara sauce, and ziti. By Mary Ann White I’m back! I will be writing a spotlight every other week on area businesses that I hope you will all enjoy reading. There is no doubt that Pete Decker would be proud of his son Tom for keeping the family business (Pete’s Gun Shop) going and building it up to be the largest gun shop in Western New England. In the four years at its present location the business has grown 30 times. Back in 1956 Pete Decker started his gun shop as a hobby in the front office of his family business, Decker’s Cleaners and Dyers, at 31 Columbia Street in Adams. Pete Decker passed away in 2004 leaving the business to his son Tom who had already developed a love for guns, trading, shooting, and hunting. He picked up all the pieces and made a move, after problems with pollution surfaced in the old building, to the present building located at 9 Grove Street (Route 8) in Adams. What a great place with between 800 and 1,000 guns and 300 hand guns in stock, an Archery Pro Shop, and a friendly, warm atmosphere where everyone is made to feel welcome, even if just stopping in for a chat. Pete’s Gun Shop is always looking to buy collections, will do consignments, trades, and are Massachusetts compliant. They cater to the Massachusetts buyers, but are also licensed in Vermont. They are Hoyt bow dealers, will do custom set-ups, and have full-time archery experts on staff. Their biggest claim to fame though is their service and friendly, knowledgeable staff which includes Tom’s wife, Pat, who does all the bookkeeping, and their dog Maggie who is the official mascot for Pete’s. From my Corner

...pound for pound... I remember when a pound of coffee was really a pound of coffee. For many years we’ve been offered 13.4 oz. of coffee in a 1 lb. can, or 2.36 lbs. of coffee in what looked like a 3 lb. can. Well, the processors and distributors have finally made coffee containers look more like the size they should be. The Panorama Market opened around 1953. It was the first “super market” in the world (so they said!). My mother took my sister and me to the grand opening. There were ribbons and balloons, free ice cream, and an appearance by Frank Fontaine, a favorite of mine as a kid because he was so funny. One of his major roles on television was Crazy Guggenheim on the Jackie Gleason Show. The Panorama Market was indeed very big, but as I look back, it was probably only onethird the size of K-Mart in Bennington! My mother didn’t do her grocery shopping there because it was about 20 miles away. She continued to shop at local stores in Northridge: Allan’s Market for produce and Gus and Paul’s Market for our meat and other odds and ends. The eggs came from local farmers; produce was also local. This was before the mass production of meats and dairy products. Both stores were on Reseda Boulevard and only three blocks from home. At that time downtown Northridge was two blocks long. We had a pet food store, Ameche’s Bar (owned by one of Don Ameche’s brothers), a liquor store, Zimmerman’s Dime Store, a dress store, and Pam’s Sweet Shoppe where Jay Silverheels (Tonto) and “Dallas” star Jim Davis were often seen. I had a basket on my bike and several times a week ran errands for my mother to pick up something at the store. She would call ahead and I signed the receipt

when I left. She paid the bill at the end of the month. We’ve become so accustomed to large grocery chains that we seldom think about where everything comes from...the largeness of it all. Thank goodness there are still neighborhood grocers in the city. They carry many of the off-beat products that you can’t find in a big box grocery store. Most of it is what the locals have requested. They offer you exotic seasonings, off-beat items such as canned conch or turtle soup, and specialty products from foreign countries that only a small, neighborhood grocer would take the time to search for and order. Hoosick Falls had a small corner grocery store when we moved here 25 years ago. It closed around 1986. Zawi Bakery was just around the corner from that small grocer. Deciding on what breads, pastries or desserts was an elevating experience, for all the while, Bach, Beethoven or Chopin was playing in the background. Competition from the Grand Union and supermarkets in Bennington contributed to the closing of these stores. It seems to me we’ve come full circle in 50 years. Grocery stores were small and independent in suburban areas. Gigantic supermarkets snuffed them out with all foods mass produced, mass transported, mass handled, mass refrigerated; tons and tons of food and because of the volume, offer vastly reduced prices. Many of us have tired of the largeness of grocery stores. We’re tired of eating chemically altered foods and meats from animals fed hormones, etc. We seek locally grown produce and meats, and the only place for their purchase is a local farmers’ market. There are few independent bakeries. I know of no local independent butcher. At farmers’ markets you will find freshly baked breads, free-range chicken and eggs (more expensive, but I’m happy continued on page 7 September 2, 2009

to pay the price), meats from animals raised without chemicals, locally grown and just picked produce, and homemade jams, jellies and other condiments. Another nice thing about farmers’ markets is the atmosphere. People bring their dogs, there’s always someone playing music, the aroma of fresh cut flowers fills the air, the color of

pound for pound, continued fresh picked vegetables, the joy of greeting a friend or neighbor. And it’s nice to be outdoors! A couple more months and we won’t have this wonderful freedom, although there are some indoor farmers’ markets. Let’s hope this desire for natural foods and locally grown produce and meat products continues.

Plight of Dairy Farmers Discussed

Town of Hoosick Supervisor Marilyn Douglas, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Town Councilperson Kevin O’Malley recently discussed the plight of New York dairy farmers. Senator Gillibrand says she is continuing to fight to increase milk prices and that local dairy farmers are underpaid. ________________________________________________

Scholarship Winner Visits Kiwanis

Kathryn Hayden, recipient of the Howard Haynes/ Kiwanis Scholarship came to the Kiwanis meeting to thank the club. Kathryn loves her college, Mount Holyoke, and you can see how excited she is to be going back for her sophomore year. Kathryn was thrilled with her college choice especially since they have an equestrian program. The Kiwanis Club has a four-year scholarship program in place within HFCS and Kathryn is one of the many students the Kiwanis has helped. September 2, 2009

Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk

The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Bennington Area residents to become Champions in the fight against Alzheimer’s by participating in the annual Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk®. Village at Fillmore Pond will be the site of the Memory Walk on Saturday, September 19. Registration and warm-up is at 8 a.m., the walk starts at 9 a.m. Those who would like to participate can sign up as individuals or as teams and solicit donations from friends, family and co-workers. Information regarding registration is available by calling Village at Fillmore Pond at 802-447-7000. Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic that is now the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. It is estimated that someone in America develops Alzheimer’s disease every 70 seconds. By mid-century someone will develop Alzheimer’s disease every 33 seconds. “There has never been a greater need for Bennington citizens to join in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by participating in Memory Walk,” said Maggie Lewis, an Alzheimer’s Association spokesperson. “As many as 5.3 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and funds raised will provide support services to the many residents of Vermont living with Alzheimer’s, while also contributing to critically needed research.” The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk is an empowering event that gives participants an opportunity to be Champions and take action in the fight against Alzheimer’s. In addition to the 2.5 mile walk, participants will enjoy refreshments, giveaways, face painting, a live broadcast by WBTN and an opportunity to design a square for the 2009 Alzheimer’s Association Memory Quilt. Walkers will also learn more about Village at Fillmore Pond’s new memory care wing, Rose Lane.

The 16th annual Bennington Quiltfest will be held at Mount Anthony Union High School on Park Street, Bennington, on Saturday, September 12. There will be 140 new quilts as well as antique quilts and quilts from the children of various schools in our area. There will be a boutique available where you may purchase some of the members’ handiworks. Food service will be available as well as plenty of free parking. Sponsor of the show is the Quiet Valley Quilt Guild, who are celebrating their 25th year as a guild. The school is handicapped accessible.

Cricket Comes To Bennington!

Second only to soccer in terms of popularity, cricket is a sport enjoyed by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. It was once fairly popular in the U.S., but declined as the homegrown game of baseball took hold. But with the recent creation of Twenty20 cricket – a fastpaced, shortened version of the game – cricket is again creating a buzz of excitement around the globe. The Bennington County Cricket Club meets every Sunday at lower Willow Park (above the Pavillion) at 11 a.m. and is looking for new members. Have you heard of the game and want to know how to play? Are you curious and just want to watch? Perhaps you’d like to become an umpire or scorekeeper – all levels of involvement are possible! It is free and open to the public, suitable for boys and girls, teens and adults. So pack a lunch and come have some fun! The BCCC is looking to grow and become a part of the Bennington community. Run for the Fallen

The Batten Kill Valley Running club sponsored their second annual Run/Walk for the Fallen on Sunday, August 23rd as part of the nationwide effort to remember the soldiers killed in the Middle East. In 2008 over 9000 people participated in this national event, running almost 36,000 miles. This year, BKVR hosted 37 people from 11 towns and three states in our West Arlington event, running or walking a total of 153 miles. Military veterans, current military, families of those in the military, and people who simply wanted to show their respect and support ran and walked on a humid and rainy morning. William Brown started the event by playing the Star Spangled Banner from his patriotic truck. One veteran remarked that the conditions today reminded him of his time on Paris Island, and that he was thinking of all the Marines currently going through basic training there now. A mother of a soldier currently stationed in Afghanistan said the weather wouldn’t stop her from running today, because her daughter is dealing with far worse conditions. BKVR thanks everyone who participated in this community event, and especially �� Vermont Bagel Works and Mrs. �� Murphy’s Donuts who provided �� refreshments.

Blood Drive in Cambridge

It can be done on the way home from work, before lunch at your favorite restaurant or in between errands; yet only five percent of the eligible population currently gives blood. In an effort to increase the regional blood supply, Embury United Methodist Church will again host a community blood drive with the American Red Cross. THE BOX – Music by Living Composers: NotaRiotous

NotaRiotous will perform a program entitled “Microtonal Voices” as part of THE BOX series on Saturday, September 12, at 8 p.m. in the ‘62 Center, CenterStage. This free event is open to the public but due to limited seating, tickets are required. ‘62 Box Office: 413-597-2736. Kicking off the Williams College Department of Music concert season is a chamber ensemble devoted exclusively to microtonal music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, directed by conductor, composer, violist, and Berkshire Symphony Orchestra member James Bergin. NotaRiotous, founded by Julia Werntz and James Bergin in 2006, is one of the initiatives overseen by the The Boston Microtonal Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to the composition, performance and study of microtonal music. Since its creation in 1988, the BMS has been devoted to raising the awareness of musicians and audiences of the expanded and enhanced expressive possibilities of composing, improvising and performing new music with new musical intervals. As interest in microtonal music continues to blossom around the world, the BMS felt an urgent need for a permanent ensemble devoted entirely to the performance of microtonal music. Boston, with its international reputation as an unusual hotbed of microtonal talent, was the ideal place for the birth of this unique ensemble. The musicians of NotaRiotous are some of Boston’s most sought-after performers of contemporary music. THE BOX series was conceived in 2007 by Williams composers David Kechley and Ileana Perez Velazquez to present the music of living composers in a setting that is intimate and a performance space that is more flexible than a traditional concert hall. Performers include both visiting artists and groups as well as Williams own faculty and ensembles such as I/O New Music.
