Spirit Halloween

Couple’s love for Halloween brings new business to Pittsﬁeld — By Mary Ann White The KB Toy Store site in Allendale has been empty for several months since its closing. Recently a new sign was spotted there and the doors opened for Spirit Halloween, which is a franchise that deals only with Halloween. The store is temporarily open from Labor Day to approximately November 1 each year. Walking through the doors you are greeted by the sights and sounds of Halloween Night demonstrated by mechanical ghosts and goblins. The walls and racks are chock full of costumes, makeup, and decorations all at very reasonable prices. Scott and Lisa Taikowski informed me that they operate a second store in the Lake George Outlets in Queensbury, New York, and had tried for over 5 years to get a store into Pittsfield. Being a temporary store, it was hard to find someone who would rent to them. Spirit Halloween came about in 1983 and grew quickly. It was acquired by Spencer Gifts, LLC in 1999 and this year offers over 700 locations nationwide. The web site states that they are the onestop destination for everything you can imagine for Halloween from costumes in sizes infant to adult to indoor and outdoor decorations and everything in between. There are even strobe lights and fog machines. For Scott, a carpenter by trade and Lisa, a furniture upholsterer, this venture came about out of their love for Halloween. They have done haunted houses for charity, and run a retail store, but Spirit Halloween allows them to have two months of their favorite holiday instead of just the one night. In 2006 Spirit Halloween September 30, 2009

launched the Spirit of Children Program which benefits child life departments within children’s hospitals and rehabilitation centers across the U.S. The program allows pediatric patients the chance to participate in and experience Halloween. The program has since expanded to include fundraising. 100% of the monies raised is used to purchase entertainment equipment such as TVs DVDs, computers, books

and arts and crafts materials in 54 hospitals throughout the U.S. and Canada. Spirit Halloween is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 to 6 on Sundays. — by Susan J. Coons ...love and hate... Several weeks ago I wrote about the fear and anger demonstrated by some Americans toward other Americans at Town Hall meetings. There is a wave of violent rhetoric storming across our country right now colliding with our sensibilities. One reader from Manchester responded angrily, and personally, toward me with her anonymous letter. So many other readers have responded in such a positive way that I must say I’m thankful to be living in this area surrounded by so many understanding and compassionate people. I also want to thank those of you who have called, sent cards, e-mails and letters of encouragement and sympathy since the passing of my Cleo. It has been difficult. She is everywhere...in the window, at the door, sitting on my feet while I wash the dishes, I feel her breathing against me on the couch, I can smell her sweet, warm breath. Thank you with all my heart. I’m so grateful to have readers like you. _________________________________________________

Anita Witten Opening at Bennington UU Fellowship

Mixed media collages by Shushan artist Anita Witten and abstract oil wash paintings by her late husband, artist E. R. Witten, are now on exhibit through October at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Bennington. The UU Meetinghouse is located at 108 School in downtown Bennington. On Friday, October 16, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., the public is invited to the artist’s reception, followed by a folksong concert by local favorites Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen. The Salem Junior/Senior High School invites parents of all 7th 12th grade students to its annual Open House which will be held on Thursday, October 8th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Parents may arrive at the school anytime between 5:30 and 7:00 p.m. to meet individually with their child’s teachers in the high school gymnasium. Teachers will be handing out 5-week progress reports at this time. ‘Echoes of The Echo’ Reminiscences

Tom Bleezarde will present “Echoes of The Echo,” reminiscences on the weekly newspaper which served the Taconic and Lebanon Valleys from 1940 to 1996, at the Stephentown Historical Society meeting on Monday, October 5. The meeting is at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Center on Garfield Road (County Route 26) in Stephentown, New York. It is free and open to the public. The building is handicapped accessible. Bleezarde will provide the rest of the story of the first fifteen years of this independent hometown newspaper founded, owned and edited by his father, Warren Bleezarde. Tom grew up in the Valley, sharing a home with his parents, one brother and the office of The Echo, the area’s family-owned weekly newspaper. Taking ads, selling subscriptions, and accepting news items were second nature for him and provided material for the anecdotes he’ll share. Bleezarde went to Hamilton College, the University of Massachusetts Journalism School, and became a reporter, columnist and editor for The Berkshire Eagle, news editor of The Brattleboro (Vermont) Reformer and editor of the Williams College Alumni Review. He has written, edited and/or published a half-dozen books including the recently published “A Class, A Building and A War,” the story of the New Lebanon Central High School class of 1953 during the World War II years in the Union Free School building.

Meditation

There will be a meditation and Taoist life philosophy class from 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Thursday October 1 to be held at Manchester Acupuncture and Herbs, 2434 Depot Sreet, in Manchester. Burden Iron Works in Shaftsbury

The Shaftsbury Historical Society invites the public to hear Victor Rolando at their annual meeting on Sunday, October 4, 2 to 4 p.m., at the museum, Vermont Route 7A, in Center Shaftsbury. The Shaftsbury furnace was the largest capacity iron furnace of its type to operate in Vermont. Miners coaxed iron ore from deep shafts at the base of Whipstock Hill along the Vermont/New York line, while others labored in the ore-processing mill on Paran Creek in North Bennington. _______________________________________________

Matteson Outstanding at Senior Games

Bennington’s senior track master, Bob Matteson (93), demonstrated his versatility at the Green Mountain Senior Games at Castleton State College on Saturday, September 19, by beating 50:00 in the 5K Road Race at 49:31, the only older-than-the-seventies runner. Two other Bennington County seniors also recorded impressive age group firsts in the 5K: Becky Kotler of Manchester and Bill Kelley of Dorset. Matteson was also the principal speaker at the meet’s opening ceremony, his text being several observations about senior athletics, as derived from some 35 years of running at the Senior Games and countless other senior/masters running events — track, road, and crosscountry. He grouped his observations under five headings, applicable not only to running but to senior athletics across the board, as follows: attitude, vitality, fellowship, outreach, and leadership. Green Mountain Senior Games is connected nationally with the Biennial Senior Games. John Pelton of Rupert is the Vermont group president and Ardis Smith the long time coordinator. Wasserstein Play ‘Third’ Opens at Olcastle

“Third,” the final play by the beloved American playwright, Wendy Wasserstein, will be presented by Oldcastle Theatre Company as their final offering of the 2009 season running October 2 through October 11 at the Bennington Center for the Arts. “Third” tells the story of a liberal college professor and her conservative student, a wrestler charged with plagiarism. Politics, ethics, stereotypes, feminism, liberalism, and friendship are brought into sharp focus in this bitingly funny play. Thought-provoking and challenging, slyly humorous and sublimely entertaining, “Third” is a play almost Shakespearian in its scope and magnitude. The cast includes Christine Decker, an Oldcastle actress since 1973 in the leading role of Laurie, an esteemed educator facing a failing marriage, a dying father, the empty nest sydrome and a perplexing student she can neither understand nor believe. Vermont pianist and composer Cody Michaels will perform an autumn concert at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church, 238 West Main Street, Bennington, Vermont, on Sunday, October 4, beginning at 2 p.m. A former park ranger and farmhand, Michaels’ unique musical expressions inspire comparisons to the likes of Beethoven, Keith Jarrett and George Winston.
