HACA Back-2-School Boost Overwhelming Success pencils and pencil boxes plus many other items were gathered by HACA volunteers over the last six weeks. Teachers will have the supplies on hand for those students needing them. Underwear, socks, hats and mittens will continue to be collected through the end of the year. Despite the sagging economy, the response was overwhelming; assuring that each student was equipped with the needed supplies. Thanks to Thorpe’s Pharmacy, Hoosick Federal Credit Union, and the new Dollar Deals on Church Street where collection boxes were located. Special credit goes to Girl Scout Troops 1144 and 1313 and their leaders who picked up, sorted, counted and packaged all the supplies. Nice job girls! _______________________________________________

Ducks Unlimited Annual Banquet

The Bennington County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will be holding its annual banquet and auction at the West Mountain Inn in Arlington, Vermont on September 11 starting at 5:45 p.m. Ducks Unlimited is one of the largest wetlands conservation organizations in North America. It has helped preserve over 12 million acres of wetlands, wildlife habitat, and recreation areas. This year, the local chapter has undertaken a project to build and place wood duck houses in area swamps and marshes. Banquet tickets include a membership to Ducks Unlimited. There is an excellent selection of wildlife artwork and sportsman’s accessories in the raffle and auction. Museum ABCs Gets Underway

Welcome back to Museum ABCs, a program designed and offered for pre-schoolers and their parents and caregivers. Developed and presented in collaboration with the Bennington Free Library, Museum ABCs is a story hour that takes place once each month at 1:30 p.m. in the galleries of the Bennington Museum. Designed especially for children ages 3 to 5, the programs include stories about the month’s topic, visits to galleries in the Bennington Museum to observe and talk about an actual piece(s) of art, and an art or craft activity. All children must be accompanied by at least one adult. The next Museum ABCs is scheduled for Thursday, September 16 at 1:30 p.m. and is entitled “What Can You Do With a Quarter? State of Craft.” Participants will be looking at the idea of making art with found objects, or unusual materials. Four pieces from the current State of Craft Exhibit - Quarter Chaise Lounge, Cephalopod Lamp, She’s Come Unraveled, and Red Pine, Walnut – will be viewed and talked about with the children. They will hear about the unusual materials these items are made from: quarters, a fossil, zippers, and branches. Books entitled “Odds ‘n’ Ends Alvy” by John Frank and “Galimoto” by Karen Lynn Williams will also be incorporated into the program. It will finish with the children making ‘odds and ends’ artwork with a variety of unusual materials. What unique works of art can be created when their imaginations run wild? Due to a gift from an anonymous donor, the programs are free. McCullough Free Library Book and Bake Sale

On Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12 the John G. McCullough Free Library will hold its annual Book and Bake Sale at the library in North Bennington. Area residents have been donating books, videos, CDs and audiobooks to the library and the Friends of the Library have been sorting and boxing the materials for the past two months. There is a large selection of contemporary fiction, children’s books, mysteries, cookbooks, gardening books and other non-fiction, as well as some classics. The bake sale features a wide variety of baked goods from breads to cakes, cookies and pies from the kitchens of the area’s best bakers. The book and bake sale will be held rain or shine in a tent at the back of the library from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. There will be no early bird sales; the sale starts promptly at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. This is an annual event undertaken by the Friends of the McCullough Library to serve the community by raising money to expand its collections, and otherwise support the library and its activities. The Friends group provides services as well, such as a weekly reading program for Head Start children, and a program that takes books and other materials to homebound readers who cannot come to the library themselves. ________________________________________________

When you come and enjoy the stuffed baked potatoes the NorShaft Lions will be serving up on Saturday, September 11 you will not only have a great lunch but you will be helping the Lions support their Sight and Hearing programs. The NorShaft Lions will be hosting the Plein Air Cafe as part of the North Bennington Plein Air Event. “En Plein Air” is about painting outdoors. On Saturday, September 11, on the grounds of Historic Park-McCullough there will be two Quick Draw painting events – one for children in the morning and one for adults in the afternoon. The NorShaft Lions Plein Air Cafe will provide refreshments from noon - 3 p.m. at the Park-McCullough Carriage Barn. Come out and enjoy the outdoor painting and have a Baked Potato – the proceeds from the Plein Air Cafe will go towards helping the sight and/or hearing impaired here in our local community. Lions have restored sight to 7.5 million people through cataract surgeries, prevented serious vision loss for 30 million people and improved eye care services for hundreds of millions. Lions also take an active role in promoting hearing loss prevention and assisting those who are deaf or hearing impaired. Project Against Violent Encounters (PAVE) is still accepting applications for its September 2010 volunteer advocacy training to assist victims of domestic and sexual violence. Training begins September 10 during the day, with some evening and weekend sessions as well. Pre-registration is required. Pumpkin Festival Space Still Available

During difficult economic times people look for places where they can sell their products, be it jams or jellies, works of art or wooden products that they make in their workshops. The Townshend Pumpkin Festival has vendor spaces available for the 26th Annual Pumpkin Festival on October 16, on the common in Townshend, Vermont from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For crafters interested in a space or having questions, please contact Harold Kvitek at 802-3487913. For the past 26 years the Townshend Business Association has sponsored the Pumpkin Festival with many activities and a very varied craft fair, with a wide variety of crafts, foods, and works of art. Last year over 60 vendors offered their many different crafts and food items, plus there will also be artists displaying their watercolors, oil paintings and other media. This is a fun-filled day for the youngsters with a pumpkin decorating contest followed by a Halloween costume parade, a scarecrow decorating contest and free pony rides for kids. Waste Oil Paint and Used Motor Oil Collection Set

On Saturday, September 11, the South Berkshire Household Hazardous Waste Collaborative will hold a paint and oil collection from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Lenox DPW. This collection is for the 16 participating towns. The Center for Ecological Technology (CET) will coordinate the collection. Acceptable materials are oil-based paint, stains, paint thinners, spray paint and turpentine, as well as waste motor oil. Advance registration with CET is required. The towns in the South Berkshire Household Hazardous Waste Collaborative sponsor this program. The participating towns are Alford, Becket, Egremont, Great Barrington, Lee, Lenox, Monterey, Mount Washington, New Marlborough, Otis, Richmond, Sandisfield, Sheffield, Stockbridge, Tyringham and West Stockbridge. Latex paint will not be accepted. Empty cans can be recycled with scrap metal. Dried-up cans of latex paint can be disposed with the regular trash. Empty cans of oil-based paint, stains and solvents can be disposed with the regular trash as well. Usable paint can be given away through freecycle.org or some non-profits. Learn About Lime Mortar

“The Use of Historical Lime Mortar” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. by Justin Rushinski at the Hebron Preservation Society on Thursday, September 9. Mr. Rushinski of Shushan is one of the few local masons skilled in use of this type of mortar, used today to maintain the structural, aesthetic and historical integrity of our older homes. One such restoration project has included a section of brick and mortar at the Wing-Northup House, headquarters of the Washington County Historical Society in Fort Edward. Janine Thomas and Students Exhibit Lessons from the Country

Lessons from the Country, an exhibit of new work by artist and teacher Janine Thomas and her students, opens at Gardenworks on Friday, September 10, with a reception for the artists from 5:00-8:00 p.m. The show will feature the work of more than 32 artists, all students and former students of Thomas who took classes with her as children. Thomas’ students work in a variety of genres including painting, photography, graphic design, pottery, sculpture and painted metal. The show runs through October 15. Thomas taught art at Hartford Central School for over 30 years. She continues to teach locally in workshops at the Georgi Museum and other locations. Early in her career she hosted a community-based art class that has continued for the last 28 years. Thomas has a great ability to encourage her students and guide them to their artistic strengths. Gardenworks is a family-owned flower and specialty crop farm that has been part of the Washington County landscape for nearly a century. Oldcastle Presents an Evening of Improv Comedy

The Oldcastle Theatre Company is presenting an evening of improv comedy Friday, September 10 at the Bennington Center for the Arts. The doors open at 7 p.m. and the show, including an auction, begins at 7:30 p.m. Christine Decker, a member of Oldcastle’s acting company since 1973 and a long-time member of the improv unit at Disney World, has organized the entertainment bringing with her a number of improv actors who have worked in Florida, Minnesota, New York and throughout the country. Brenny Rabine, last seen in “Leading Ladies” the hit farce of Oldcastle’s summer season, and a member of the Mop and Bucket Improv group in Schenectady, New York will be among the performers. The auction will include a four day weekend stay at a beautiful house on Cape Cod, exotic and delicious wines donated by Sante Magazine, an autographed autobiography by comedian-actor Robert Klein and a novel from Bennington’s own Carleton Carpenter, dinners at area restaurants, paintings from regional artists, and many donations of services and goods from businesses in Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York. “We are so grateful to the scores of local and regional businesses that have generously donated items. Walk in the Woods at Pember

On Sunday, September 19 at 12:30 p.m. there will be an estimated 30 minute educational Walk in the Woods with Pember Museum educator, Bernadette Hoffman at the Hebron Nature Preserve. Following the walk will be a Tracks Class from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the Hebron Preserve Porter Schoolhouse where participants will receive a track card and get the chance to create a clay track to take home. McCartee’s Barn in Salem, New York

McCartee’s Barn is anticipating an exciting weekend September 11 and 12 with the show being available until October 12. “Orlyk, Sweetland and Kessler” will be hung in the first floor of the historic home on 23 East Broadway with the Barn still hosting over 25 regional artists and antiques. At 2 p.m. Brad Kessler will read from “Goat Song,” a story about the a seasonal life, a short history of herding and the art of making cheese. NSK and Head Start Invite Kids to Fall Soccer Clinic

Children ages 3 to 5 are invited to sign up for the annual Head Start Soccer Clinic sponsored by NSK Steering Systems America. To register your preschooler or for more information, call Shannon VanderWoude at 802-442-3686 x232. Enrollment is free but places are limited. “NSK provides the equipment. All children receive free soccer balls, team t-shirts, instruction, and snacks,” President Bill Berry of NSK Steering Systems America said. “It’s great fun for the kids and hopefully sparks a lifelong interest in the sport.” The 9th Annual NSK Head Start Soccer Clinic begins this year on September 11 and continues for three more Saturdays – September 18, 25 and October 2 – at middle Willow Park in Bennington. Preschoolage children from any part of the community are eligible to participate, but places are limited. “Families with young children need opportunities like this for activity and NSK has helped us create a fun and positive experience,” Head Start Director Betsy Rathbun-Gunn said. “Everyone knows that preschoolers have boundless energy, and a soccer clinic is right up their alley.” Sporting activities are known to offer many benefits, including aptitude for sports, team play, and self-confidence. Furniture Store Expands Bucking Business Trends

Simmons Furniture, Inc., founded in 1879 in Adams, Massachusetts, is set to add a third location in Berkshire county. In addition to a 15,000 square foot showroom in Adams and a 20,000 square foot showroom on Route 20 at the Pittsfield Plaza, Simmons will open another 25,000 square foot showroom in the Allendale shopping center in October. September to be Busy at the CCC

The Courthouse Community Center in Salem has been hard at work planning events for the fall season. September will be a busy month with two lectures of interest being offered. On Thursday, September 9 at 7:30, the CCC will partner with the Agricultural Stewardship Association to offer an informative talk about sustainability. Documentary producer Chuck Shultz will be on hand to offer a viewing of his latest film, “The Last Crop,” which focuses on the plight of a farm family trying to preserve their property. The following Thursday, September 16, at 7:30, the CCC will host a lecture featuring the Lumby series author, Gail Fraser, and her accomplished artist husband, Art Poulin. This dynamic local couple will share anecdotes and speak about a life they love at Lazy Goose Farm. Both lectures will take place in the courtroom on the second floor. There is no charge and the public is welcome. On Sunday, September 19 and October 24 at 3 p.m., acclaimed concert pianist and conductor Daniel Shulman will return to the CCC to entertain guests with recitals of classic piano works including sonatas by Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann. The proceeds from Mr. Shulman’s performances will benefit the many enrichment programs offered by the CCC, and tickets are currently available. Earlier in the year, the CCC received a $50,000 donation from a generous friend to restore two key rooms in memory of Bob Benn. The transformation of the rooms is remarkable, and on Friday, September 24 at 4 p.m., the Bob and Beverley Benn Mezzanine and Bob Benn Activity Room will be dedicated. 17th Bennington Quiltfest Show

The 2010 show is presented by the Quiet Valley Quilters Guild on Saturday, September 19, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, September 19, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mount Anthony Union Middle School, 747 East Road, Bennington, Vermont, with plenty of parking. This year the featured quilter is Bethany Reynolds who has been quilting and teaching since 1982. She and her husband owned a fabric and quilt shop for ten years. She is nationally known and has taught at major shows, including the American Quilter’s society show and International Quilt Festival, and has been a guest on several television quilting programs, including “Simply Quilts.” She has published numerous patterns for quilts and wearable art under her BSR Design, Inc., label. She has written five books published by the American Quilter’s society. Her most recent, “3 Quilters Celebrate the 4 Seasons,” is co-authored with Karen Combs and Joan Shay. She also designs fabric collections for Blank Quilting. The Raffle Quilt is called Tutti Fruitti and is queen size done in a rainbow of Bali hand-painted and batik fabrics. Jane Stickle Quilt on Display at the Bennington Museum

Now through October 14 the quilt that inspires quilters all over the world will be on its yearly display at the Bennington Museum. Brought to the museum 60 years ago, the Jane Stickle Quilt is only shown for a short time each year due to the fragility of the fabric; quilters from around the country and world plan trips to the region during that time to see the 1863 quilt. The Jane Stickle quilt is comprised of 169 fiveinch blocks, each in different patterns, containing a remarkable total of 5,602 pieces surrounded by a unique scalloped border. The craftsmanship of the quilt has been mentioned in numerous quilting books, and is the topic of “Dear Jane, The Two Hundred Twenty-Five Patterns from the 1863 Jane A. Stickle Quilt,” by Brenda Papadakis. The significance of quilts, with their vibrant colors and precise geometric patterns, goes beyond the comforting, everyday use they received by their original owners. Today, within the context of museums, early textiles can be re-envisioned as works of art on par with any abstract painting of the twentieth century. The Stickle quilt, with its dizzying array of printed cloth patterns and individual block designs, surely embodies this idea of quilt as art,” states Jamie Franklin, curator of the Bennington Museum. Jane Stickle was born Jane Blakely on April 8, 1817 in Shaftsbury, Vermont. Married to Walter Stickle sometime before 1850, they did not have a family of their own. They did, however, take responsibility for at least three other children. In an 1860 census, Jane Stickle was listed as a 43 year-old farmer living alone. She eventually reunited with her

husband, but during that time alone she lovingly created what is now known as the Jane Stickle Quilt. As a reminder of the turbulent times the country was going through, she carefully embroidered “In War Time 1863” into the quilt. The Jane Stickle Quilt can be viewed with regular museum admission. The Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main Street (Route 9), Bennington in The Shires of Vermont and is just a short ride from Manchester, Williamstown, and eastern New York. Campers Get Their Kicks on Route 66

The final camp of the Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition 2010 summer enrichment series had youngsters taking a road trip along Historic Route 66 from Chicago to California. Campers created scenes from each of the eight states along the “Main Street of America” and presented a showcase, complete with a Route 66 diner and an Air Stream camper, for friends and parents to explore. Camp dates for 2011 are already posted on the HAYC3 web site, www.hoosickyouth.org. There will be February and April vacation camps, as well as four camps during summer vacation.
