incredible evening of entertainment, but they also did so with the purpose of taking something they love to do and transferring it into a way to “give back”. Burr and Burton Academy donated the use of the Riley Center for the Arts, Northshire Bookstore and Write Solutions under-wrote the concert, and GNAT provided promotional air time. For the generosity of spirit, heart, effort and time given by Bob and Chris and so many others in making this concert possible, and to all those who came out to see it, I am so extremely grateful. READERS’ LETTERS ...Catamount Health...

It upsets me that Governor Douglas and Senator Shumlin have proposed to cut Catamount Health in an attempt to balance the state’s budget. As a recent graduate of the University of Vermont, I know many of my peers would be living without health insurance if it weren’t for Catamount Health. Governor Douglas spoke at our graduation and emphasized the importance for graduates of Vermont colleges to work and live in Vermont post graduation. However, especially in these tough economic times and an extremely weak job market for recent graduates in Vermont, it is almost impossible for young adults, including myself, to afford to do so. Catamount Health is a program that is making the decision to stay in Vermont a reality for young adults. By offering health care at a reasonable price, many recent graduates were given access to good health care at prices they could afford. Governor Douglas and Senator Shumlin, please find alternatives to balancing the budget and leave Catamount Health Insurance intact for the welfare of the next generation of hardworking Vermonters. — Stephanie Walsh Rochester, VT

Sometime in December I ordered two Snuggies as advertised on the History Channel. The offer shows items available in various colors. During my phone call to the number displayed on the screen, I was confronted with a barrage of questions. “Do you want to add to your order?” I declined all the extra offerings and placed an order for a set of two Snuggies. The advertisement clearly says if you call right now they will add an extra one free, priced at $19.95. I agreed to an upcharge of $5 each for a better quality and gave them my credit card information. A few days later I checked on my order and learned it had been back ordered due to heavy volume. I also learned that my order amounted to a total of $92.36. My daughter called the supplier and spoke to a person, but could not get a sufficient explanation of how they had arrived at $92.36. They explained to my daughter that each Snuggie was priced at $29.95 plus $7.95 for shipping and handling. I asked my daughter to cancel my order as I felt to have been taken, and that I suspect fraudulent machinations. I am turning the matter over to the Vermont State Attorney’s office and also writing a letter to the Better Business Bureau in Connecticut. — Frank Zobel, North Bennington, Vt. ____________________

Literacy is Fun!

Family Matters is a series of educational workshops developed by the Northshire Head Start program for parents of preschool age children. The second in the series this year is entitled Literacy is Fun. The objective of this workshop is to stimulate a young child’s environment by weaving literacy throughout the life of a busy family. The presenter is Marie Sossi who has earned a masters of science in education and has 46 years of experience in the education and reading field. She has worked as a special education and reading teacher from preschool through junior high and taught at the college level in Maryland. Marie is a wonderful storyteller who currently volunteers at the Mark Skinner Library and substitute teaches at Manchester Middle School (MEMS). This workshop will be held at Northshire Day School (NDS), which is located at 5484 Main Street in Manchester on Thursday, January 29th from 67:30 p.m. Childcare is available. This workshop is collaboratively sponsored by the Northshire Head Start program, Northshire Day School, Vermont Reading Partners, Mark Skinner Library, and other area childcare centers. Vermont Woman Serves Inaugural Pie

Bondville resident Cindy Logan is bringing a true taste of New England to the inaugural celebrations. Logan was chosen from hundreds of submissions to serve her award-winning Ma Bean’s Apple Pie at the New England Inaugural Ball on Sunday, January 18. Logan, who runs the Red Fox Inn, will hand-deliver over 400 of her homemade pies to the Ball to serve President-elect Barack Obama and other distinguished politicians. Vermont State Senator Patrick Leahy endorsed Logan and her pies in the quest for a spot at the inaugural table. Because of Leahy’s assistance, Logan’s pies have earned a place in our nation’s history. “I’m too busy to think right now,” she said. “I need to make 400 pies by Saturday! I don’t know how I’m going to do it.”

This workshop will be held at Happy Days, which is located at 426 East Arlington Road. It is scheduled on Thursday, January 22nd from 67:30pm. Childcare is available. The well known photographer, Dave Kutchyukian, will be speaker at the Dorset Senior Connection meeting at the Wilson House on Thursday, January 22. Nature Artist to Exhibit at the Gallery at Equinox Village

On Thursday, January 29 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m., The Gallery at Equinox Village will host an exhibit opening for the work of local artist Philip Letiecq. Executive Chef Glenn Blackledge will offer a delightful array of hors d’oeuvres. Equinox Village extends an open invitation to the community to attend, enjoy fine art and good company, and to meet the artist. Phil’s paintings and drawings emanate from a love of nature, stemming from early boyhood. Close to the natural world, he became an ardent outdoorsman, living in upstate New York, Wyoming, Colorado, and now Vermont. Largely self-taught, Phil adheres to authentic detail with his animal subjects, giving particular attention to their behavior and surroundings. He hopes his depictions will stimulate a greater awareness and sensitivity for the wonders of this extraordinary world. Among many venues, Phil’s work has been displayed at the National Audubon Society Exhibit in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he was awarded Best of Show in the Bird Category, and at the Winchester Museum Exhibit in Cody, Wyoming where he received yet another Best of Show. Equinox Village is located at 49 Maple Street. The Letiecq exhibit will be on display to the public through March 23, 2009 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily free of charge. Mettawee Crowns School Geo Bee Winner

Congratulations to Alanna Martin (6th gr.), Mettawee’s Champion in the school level competition of the National Geographic Geo-Bee. There were 14 finalists (grades 4-6) who answered many rounds of questions about U.S. cities, states, world continents, world cities and maps. From that group three students, Christina Chilkott (4th gr., finishing 2nd), Alanna Martin and Jack Jacob (5th gr., finishing 3rd) were eligible for the championship round. MCS Principal Nancy Mark and 4th grade teacher Mark Rampone, and the entire MCS community, are proud of all participating students in this important educational event. Alanna will now take a written test in order to be eligible for the statelevel round of competition held later this Spring in Montpelier.

Coons When a peeve hits you (an errant shopping cart out for a run with your car as it’s destination), it’s not too easy to laugh! “Doggone that nut who left the shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot!” Of all of you who responded to the call for pet peeves, discourteous drivers and cell phone users topped the list. Slow drivers are just about everyone’s peeve. There’s a law in California that if you are driving on a two lane road or highway, and there are several vehicles close behind you, you must pull over at the first opportunity and allow them to pass. This is especially helpful when driving up or down the mountains. One day last week I was the fourth in a line of about 20 vehicles following someone driving a pickup truck. The driver decided he was going to set the pace for everyone ��

on the road, and that pace was five miles below the speed limit. Slow drivers are never ticketed. But the driver who passes at five MPH over the speed limit is sure to be stopped by Smoky. One reader’s pet peeve is loud gum chewing and snapping then popping it. People who wander off while leaving their shopping cart unattended in the middle of the aisle in the supermarket is Anna’s pet peeve. Tail-gating, and as a pedestrian, drivers not stopping to allow you to cross the street at the intersection, especially when they’re turning right and you’re already in the crosswalk is the pet peeve from a cheerful McDonald’s employee in Manchester. Susan sends her latest and most frustrating peeve. The advertisements each evening during network news are always about a physical problem and how a certain drug will solve that problem, if, in fact, it doesn’t make you bleed, black out, suffer severe kidney disorders, give you something that will last 4 hours and send you to the emergency room or even possibly kill you. The U.S. is one of only two countries in the entire world that allows pharmaceutical advertising, and we wonder why we have to pay so much for drugs! Marge writes that while cell phones are a very important part of our lives, there is a time and place for them. Users should think of courtesy to others while in church, attending social gatherings, and driving. I know of many service organizations that penalize cell phone users if they allow the phone to ring during a meeting. Sounds good to me! One reader’s peeve regards the display of the U.S. flag. While she understands that people want to show their patriotism by displaying the flag, if not displayed and cared for properly it has the opposite effect. It saddens her to drive by and see a ragged flag, January 21, 2009

flown day and night, in all kinds of weather, hanging bedraggled in the dark. Guidelines state that flags may be flown in foul weather, if it’s an all-weather flag. I question whether the flags that are put up and seemingly forgotten are all-weather. A reader from Melrose, NY, writes his greatest peeve is tailgating. Bruce sent in the following five peeves: 1. Calling Medicare and going through numerous voice mail and numbers, finally hearing “You are being connected to a representative. Your wait will be approximately 28 minutes.” 2. Pulling into a supermarket parking lot and finding it half full of empty shopping carts. 3. Receiving offers to renew magazine subscriptions when there are still eight months left on the current one! My personal pet peeves are rude drivers; obnoxious advertising on television; subscription cards in magazines that fall out

all over the floor; public officials, banks, oil industry spokespeople, and pharmaceutical companies who spend 24/7 trying to find ways to keep all of the rest of us in the dark about where the money goes! And, the one thing that angers me most of all is the way CEOs flaunt and pad their income, patting one another on the back, while the rest of us pay them to do that from the sweat off our backs. Expletive deleted!

Practice has begun, but Southern Vermont Mountain Fusion wants soccer players, near and far, to know that the club still has a few roster openings on the following teams for the upcoming season: U17 Boys Travel, U14 Boys Travel , U12 Boys Travel, U10 Boys and U8 Boys; and U16 Girls Black Travel, U14 Girls Black Travel and U8 Girls. The travel teams play a full set of games and tournaments in the Southern Vermont and Albany, New York areas against the top level of competition. The U10 and U8 Ages will play in jamborees within Vermont. Club fees are extremely reasonable, and scholarship money is still available. Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? These questions continue to resonate in the political discourse of 21st century America. These are also some of the questions raised by the film, “For the Bible Tells Me So” to be presented at the Mark Skinner Library on Friday, January 23 at 7 p.m. as part of the Manchester Film Forum’s winter film series. Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Seattle International Film Festival, Dan Karslake’s provocative, entertaining documentary brilliantly reconciles homosexuality and Biblical scripture. Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families -- including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson —we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard’s Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, “For the Bible Tells Me So” offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the cross hairs of scripture and sexual identity. The Manchester Film forum is a loosely structured group of area residents who view films of social interest, followed by a discussion. Admission is free although donations are appreciated. Hildene Winter History Series Begins With Lincoln On Thursday, January 22, Hildene Executive Director, Seth Bongartz, will make the first presentation of the 2009 Winter History Series, speaking on “Lincoln the Leader.” His talk will focus on five key decisions Lincoln made during his presidency and how those deci-

Each of the four thematically connected Winter History Series lectures takes place at 7 in the Beckwith Room. The 45 minute presentations will be followed by

Photograph Exhibit and Auction

The Craig Porter Nature Photography Exhibit at the Rupert Kittay Library opened to rave reviews. Mr. Porter’s breathtaking photographs capture nature at it’s finest. Mr. Porter has generously donated his mounted and framed photos to be in a silent auction for the benefit of the Kittay Library. The auction continues until the end of April with starting bids of $25 for these professional quality pictures. The exhibit may be viewed during open hours at the Kittay Library. Hours are Sunday noon to 4, Tuesday 2:30 - 5:30, Wednesday 10 a.m.- 1p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon. The library is located at 2728 Rte. 153 in Rupert. The Southern Vermont/Northshire Beekeeper’s Club has started a new year with a bang...or maybe a buzz! The whole community, whether you have hives or just find these creatures mesmerizingly wonderful, is invited to the first meeting of the year. Jack Rath beekeeper of over 30 years, will be offering a “How To” class on Wednesday, January 21 at 7 p.m., at the Israel Congregation which is just north of Manchester on Route 7A. This is the first in a three part series. Jack assured the club that although it is aimed at “newbees”, there will be a lot of discussion for those keepers who are more advanced in their knowledge. Secret Garden,” will take place on Tuesday, January 27 and on Wednesday, January 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dorset Playhouse on Cheney Road in Dorset, Vermont. It is not necessary to attend both sessions. The role of Archibald is written for a tenor voice, while Neville can be sung as a baritone or low tenor. The role of young Dickon can be sung as a tenor or baritone. Colin, however, must be a soprano, as must the young actress playing the role of Mary Lennox. A quartet of performers from the Vermont Symphony Orchestra (VSO) will visit Fisher Elementary School as part of their “Ah! Cappella” will perform a wide selection of music, from madrigals to African-American spirituals and coal miner songs.
