Pawlet’s Club 2011 would like to thank all those who have helped with and attended our fundraising events over the past few months. Club 2011 was founded this summer by a group of residents to begin planning for Pawlet’s 250th birthday celebration in 2011 and to help raise funds to complete the renovation of the Town Hall. The concert by Freedom Hawk, our local band, along with the first Homegrown and Handmade Festival and performance by Dick Solberg, The Fiddler, together with the spaghetti dinner and Moe Harrington performance have been well attended and have provided an encouraging start to the organization’s goals. Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning has just completed two culinary classes this month that were not only well attended but big hits with those who were there. I want to express my sincere thanks to everyone involved. Chefs Justin Dain and Peter Adams of The Reluctant Panther created a perfectly prepared and tastefully presented meal at the home of Norene and George Peck, who graciously hosted “Autumn Opulence” on October 5. More recently, Sarah Porter of Poncé delighted students with “The Art of Cake Decorating” on October 21st. Both of these classes filled up quickly. Kerry Slattery of Vermont Kitchen Supply has really been a tremendous help in pulling all the pieces together in creating a wonderful array of cooking classes this past year. I certainly could not do this without her knowledge, organization, and boundless energy and enthusiasm. Thank you, Kerry! Before the year is up, we have two more classes being offered. On November 14, I will present a demonstration class on apple pie baking, complete with homemade flaky crust and variations on fillings and toppings. — by Susan J. Coons ...way to go... Last Tuesday afternoon I returned from Naples, Florida, after spending eight days in the sand, sun and water. I stayed with my son who prepared several gourmet dinners, such as pan-seared sesame seed tuna steak with creamy ginger sauce, stir-fried vegetables julienne, brown fried rice, and a dessert with brandied seared bananas over vanilla ice cream. What scrumptious delights! I met a spiritual Zen healer (a friend of my son) who teaches Zen and acupressure and has a practice that reaches across the country. From just a 20 minute observation of me as I interacted with him, his wife and my son, he was able to tell me things about myself regarding my health, outlook, sleep habits and more. It’s very difficult to describe what he does, but I’ve felt relaxed since his acupressure treatment. I need to practice what I learned now that I’m home and in my old routine (which I’m trying to break). We always take one trip to the Lani Kai in Fort Myers, which is probably the seediest hotel on the west coast of Florida. So seedy that it’s campy. Bathrooms are filthy. Never use them. The drinks are good and so are the hot dogs! This time we had lunch on the top deck. It was actually nice up there. Still a seedy bar, but we ate outside and it was nice. It was another experience to remember and I’m certain we’ll do it again. If any of you have experienced the Lani Kai, let’s talk! It’s now a hot place for spring break. John’s phone never stopped ringing. He takes and makes his busi-

ness calls while he’s lounging at the beach! What a life! Which brings up something I’ve been pondering... I’m trying to find a way to convince my boss that I can work on the papers as easily from Naples, Florida as Bennington and Manchester, Vermont! I was thinking February and March. What do you think?? I would be able to keep you up to date on the warm weather, water temperature, latest golf and tennis results at the various country clubs, and a little of the night life at Harold’s, Dirty Larry’s or The Real McCaw. I’ll have to work on this... ________________________________________________

Casting for Recovery Receives Beneﬁt

TriState Pennysaver News and the Vermont News Guide ran a special section on October 21 and 28, for Breast Cancer Awareness. The response was wonderful and we thank all of the local businesses who showed their support. The TriState Pennysaver News and Vermont News Guide presented a check for $400 to Casting for Recovery in Manchester Vermont. Casting for Recovery was founded in 1996 and is a national non-profit support and educational program for breast cancer survivors. Thanks again to all who participated in this special section.

Mary Anne Lucas

Mary Anne Lucas, who passed away from us October 18, was a dear friend of mine. I remember the first time I met her. She came to the Vermont News Guide to interview for a sales position. I knew she would get it. She was tall, attractive, well poised, and dressed in a “Jackie O” kind of suit. Mary Anne was very intelligent and had a quick grasp on anything you might be talking about. She entered college at the age of 14; spoke several languages fluently; was creative and a real artist who attended Pratt Art Institute (but spared us the pain of describing her work, as many artists from Pratt seem to be inclined to do!), and she loved antiques. Her favorite joy was to get down and dirty throwing old Oriental rugs around, crawling through attics and creeping through basements searching out valuable finds. We often met for lunch in Manchester. Sometimes she came out to the house for lunch or dinner or a swim. I would drive up to Danby when I had the time and would be greeted by Bunny (who would jump into my arms) and Ginger. She liked to go to Trader Joe’s in New York City, and always asked me if I could think of anything I would need. She knew I missed Trader Joe’s. Mary Anne was generous and giving. I loved her fine wit, sense of humor and giggle/laugh. She leaves a deep void that cannnot be filled. I will have to depend on our memories. — SJC

Bruce Wasserstein Dear Guide Readers, Last week my brother Bruce Wasserstein, Wall Street Chairman of the Chairmen, suddenly died of a heart attack. Thank you for your hugs, cards, calls and emails. They helped. Bruce was special from day one, after all he was born on Christmas day. He was always ambitious and always a strategist. Chess was his game.

A week before he died the corner arch for Wasserstein Hall was put in place at Harvard Law School. Albert, our son Max, a graduate student at Harvard Divinity School and I are standing in front of the arch. This new two hundred million dollar building will be the new law school center. In Memory of Arthur Jerome ‘Dee’ Kilburn On a rainy Saturday East Dorset morning, serenaded by the whistle and rhythm of a northbound freight, about seventy family members gathered as Arthur Jerome “Dee” Kilburn was laid to rest with thanks to God, full military honors, and Taps. Adella Kilburn was surrounded by family including her ten children, grand and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and loved ones. The Kilburn clan adjourned to the VFW where Michael Kilburn led the beginning of years of stories that will be told as the legacy and legend of “Dee” lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. Theresa Kilburn began by sharing with each of her brothers and sisters the qualities that they received from their “Dad.” Stories were told of deer camp and growing up in the Kilburn home. Dee’s brother Ted confessed his part in how Arthur had come to be known as “Dee.” Mike read a beautiful poem he had written about how his father had put his arms around him to pick him up in childhood and how he had been able to put his arms around his dad to pick him up and help him to his next journey. I have been lucky enough to share a friendship with Dee and Adella for nearly thirty years. From the electrical business, to years of breakfast at the Quality family table and Rotary meetings, Dee was always there with opinion, advice, and assistance. He was there with encouragement when I met my wife Tara. He cooked salt pork for dinners at deer camp and generously included our sons who still talk about things they learned from Dee. Tara joined in the affectionate, usually playfully combative relationship that we enjoyed for the last ten years on Sunday evenings at the Kilburn kitchen table as Adella rolled her eyes patiently and lovingly. Friends and neighbors gathered at our pub Friday evening and began reminiscing about their experiences and memories of Dee. I am reminded that men who are lucky enough to have a strong woman by their side are able to live large. As a marine, a father, a trade and businessman, even the rascal on the Rascal, Dee was a part of Manchester who lived large and touched many. We thank Adella Kilburn for sharing her husband with all of us. In the words of an Irish prayer: “Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effort…life means all that it ever meant…there is an unbroken continuity in our hearts. Northshire Nonproﬁt Network Meeting

The Northshire Nonprofit Network will be meeting on Friday, November 6, 8:00 a.m., at The Collaborative, located at 3757 Richville Road (corner of Richville Road and Route 11, next to Earth & Sea Fish Market), Manchester Center, Vermont. The topic is “Ins and Outs of — What Federal, State and Foundations are Looking For.” Guest speakers are Jennifer Flannery, The Collaborative, and Seline Skoug. Ms. Flannery served as the Executive Director of The Collaborative in Londonderry and Manchester for the past eight years. For The Collaborative she has written and been awarded over one million dollars in state and federal grants to support The Collaborative’s substance abuse prevention and asset building programs for youth and families. Ms. Skoug, currently President of the NNN, has been working in the healthcare field for 20 years and served on numerous boards and non-profit committees. She is the former Executive Director for Casting for Recovery, a national non-profit serving breast cancer survivors, who has written numerous grants and organizational proposals. This meeting is free and open to staff, board members, and volunteers from all nonprofit organizations in the region, as well as other interested people. Refreshments will be served. As the winter approaches the Bart Center is looking for volunteers to teach skiing to those with physical and/or mental challenges. In our hard economic times what’s better than free! You get free training available to you. By volunteering you get a free day lift ticket with opportunities to earn free additional vouchers. Don’t know how to ski but still want to help? Swanky Bowls Event to Kick Off the Season on November 14

Local Student Studying in Vietnam

Kelly Biggs, of Manchester, is currently studying in Vietnam as part of a competitive, off-campus program of Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, Biggs is studying in Hanoi. One of the first semester-long study abroad opportunities in Vietnam, the HWS program in Hanoi enables students to explore an ancient Asian civilization which is undergoing a dramatic process of transition and modernization. Students will begin intensive Vietnamese language instruction in Ho Chi Minh City upon their arrival in Vietnam, continuing under the direction of faculty from Vietnam National University in Hanoi. An internship or independent study project is required. Hanoi, with a population of one million, is a small capital city that is calm in comparison to the flashy southern boomtown of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). But while Hanoi honors Vietnam’s long and tumultuous past in the ancient merchant streets of its unique Old Quarter, the colonial facades of the French Quarter, the monuments and house of Ho Chi Minh and the relics of the struggle for independence and the “American War,” it has also embraced the open economic policies of doi moi that are transforming Vietnam. The country is experiencing an exciting period of change and Hanoi is the perfect vantage point to witness these changes. Vietnam is at a crossroads as the country navigates between Communism and open markets, a glorious (and also painful) past and an uncertain future, and increasing inequalities between rich and poor, city and countryside. Excursions are an important part of the program because they give students the opportunity to experience different areas of the country. Previous excursions have included visits to Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, the central highlands, the northern border area and coastal areas around Hoi An, an old seaport, and Hue, the imperial capital. There will also be course-related visits to various cultural and historical sites in and around Hanoi including museums, the Opera, a national park, craft villages and Buddhist pagodas and pilgrimage sites. About 50 percent of HWS students study off campus during their four years. The Colleges offer a range of activities to students when they return from abroad in order to help them to continue with their experience. HWS students who return from abroad also work with the greater Geneva community to share experiences and work with or for the Colleges Center for Global Education of HWS to help prepare others to go abroad.

Save the Date for Christmas Carols

Saturday December 5 is the date to save to get in the Christmas mood! Last December’s popular program of seasonal music will return on that date, organized by vocalist Robyn Madison, and featuring area singers, instrumentalists, and students from Burr & Burton Academy. Madison originally conceived the musical program of traditional and pop Christmas carols as a means to present the community with an entertaining, fun celebration of seasonal music – specifically vocal music. Involving local singers and instrumentalists of several age groups was and is a key element, as well as serving to complement the area’s thrust towards seasonal tourism. “I wanted to help show off the local talent to the community and visitors alike. So many audience members who attended last year begged us to do the program again this year”, Madison said. Eight accomplished adult singers, pianists, other instrumentalists and BBA’s Madrigal ensemble under director Julie Freebern will bring the program alive at the First Congregational Church at 7:30 p.m., Saturday December 5. Italian American Comedy: From the Immigrant Era to the Present

Italian immigration scholar Salvatore Primeggia returns to the Slate Valley Museum on Sunday, November 8, at 1:30 p.m., to present a free lecture on southern Italian American comedy from the immigrant era to the present. The program is sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The lecture is the sixth in a series of public programs offered by the museum in its 2009 season about the folk life and culture of the immigrant groups who came to the region to work in the slate industry. “At the turn of the 20th century, Italian immigration to America swelled as Italian families escaped the poverty of their home country,” says museum executive director Mary Lou Willits. “Many families from Southern Italy made their way to the Slate Valley seeking work as unskilled laborers in the slate industry.” Primeggia’s lecture focuses on southern Italian American comedy from its roots in the Commedia Dell’Arte and southern Italian poverty through its progression in transplanted American generations. The lecture follows the development of Italian American humor as it responds to and mirrors the status of the Italian American community, from the immigrant era to the present. Skits, jokes, songs, and parodies from comedians of various eras and styles trace a legacy that ranges from immigrant coffee houses, to the ethnic stage, to radio and records, to television and film. Admission to the lecture and the museum is free, and doors open at 1 p.m. Seating capacity is limited to 85, so early arrival is recommended. Manchester’s Energy-Saving Success Story The results are in. According to data released by Efficiency Vermont, recent Manchester-area energy-saving efforts are, by any measure, a success. The Vermont Community Energy Mobilization (VCEM) Project, a four-month campaign that ended in the spring, is now reducing local energy costs by more than $5,000 per year, based on average Vermont residential electricity rates. The Manchester campaign was one of nine VCEM projects in the state. Together, the nine communities’ efforts are saving as much electricity, annually, as 43 Vermont households use in a year. “Manchester’s success is due to the commitment of this community’s people and to the leadership of the Manchester Energy Committee, and residents Alan Benoit, Philip Picotte and Lee Krohn, Town Planning Director,” says Gabrielle Stebbins, VCEM statewide co-coordinator for Efficiency Vermont. “Not only are households saving energy dollars, but they’re also contributing to a cleaner environment by demanding less energy from polluting power plants.” Manchester’s efforts brought 34 Efficiency Vermont-trained local volunteers into a total of 48 homes in Manchester, Dorset, and Peru to identify potential energy-saving improvements, install efficient products — such as compact fluorescent light bulbs -- and to educate residents about ways to further reduce energy costs. “A great component of this project is that it truly reflects Vermont’s state ethos of neighbors helping neighbors says VCEM statewide cocoordinator, Paul Markowitz, of Vermont Energy and Climate Action Network.

‘Kudos’ to Bromley’s Adventure Park Staffer Jayme Ayotte

As Bromley Mountain prepares for its seasonal transformation from amusement park to ski resort, the Sun Mountain Adventure Park management team of Pete Robertson and Mike Scholz congratulate and thank the Summer 2009 Adventure Park staff and announce the winner of this year’s Andrea Coolidge Kudos Award, Jayme Ayotte. The award was created to commemorate the life of long-time Bromley employee, Andrea Coolidge, who passed away in May of 2008. “Ask anyone who worked with Andrea for any amount of time, and that’s pretty much everyone here at Bromley, and they’ll tell you that she was the hardest worker they’ve ever seen,” says Pete Robertson. “No disrespect to anyone else,” adds Mike Scholz, “but it’s a given that Andrea was the hardest worker Bromley’s ever had.” Jayme Ayotte lived up to Andrea’s legacy and demonstrated that he was a great team player by helping out other Adventure Park Staffers as well as treating the guests well enough to earn accolades from supervisors (the Kudos Award gets its name from Robertson’s and Scholz’ habit of handing Kudos Granola Bars to employees who go the extra mile - the winner of the annual award is the staffer who earned the most Kudos bars over the season).

Maple Street School Girls Complete Undefeated Season

The Maple Street School 7th and 8th grade girls’ soccer team defeated Sacred Heart by a score of 3-0 on Monday afternoon at Willow Park in Bennington. Goals by seventh grader Kiana Avlon and eighth graders Lily Shaw and Maddie Pagnucco provided the winning margin for the Moose. Goalkeeper Samantha Sullivan and defenders Shaw, Claire Cofelice, Lara Lathrop, Lucy Bisselle, and Gabi Hasaj helped to earn the shutout, Maple Street’s seventh of the season. With the victory, Maple Street completed the school’s first-ever undefeated season at 10-0-3. Along the way Maple Street outscored their opponents by a 59-11 margin, and coach Jeff Barclay added, “Having a high quality team like this one was very special. All About Alzheimer’s Family Education Program Offered

If someone in your family has Alzheimer’s disease, you know that life has changed and that you are faced with new challenges every day. Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease can be tough and frustrating, but realizing you are not alone and that there are ways to make the job easier can reduce some of the stress. The Alzheimer’s Association of Vermont is offering a six hour education program for families (and friends) of those with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorder. The program is presented in two sessions, which are three hours each and will provide family members with a basic understanding of memory loss, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and the changes in daily living that these bring. The program is being offered in Manchester, Vermont, on Mondays November 16 and 23, from 6-9 p.m., each evening at Equinox Village, 49 Maple Street, Manchester, Vermont. H1N1 Flu Clinic Schedule Manchester Health Services will hold two H1N1 flu clinics in November. The first to be held Thursday, November 5 and the second to be held Thursday, November 19, 1 to 3 p.m. both days. The target groups to receive the vaccine at this time are: pregnant women, health care workers, caregivers of children under 6 months of age, children 10 years to 24 years, and anyone 25 years to 64 who has a high risk of complications from the flu. Vaccine is limited but the Vermont Department of Health is hoping for more in December.

Home Wanted for Special Needs Kitty

Poor little Vixen was only five months old when she was dropped off at Second Chance almost a year ago. Suffering from a chronic cough, she has spent practically all of her time isolated from the general pet population so that the others don’t catch her cough. The saddest part is that she is not only isolated, but that she is also confined in a small, 3x3 foot steel cage in the infirmary because the shelter doesn’t have a separate room where she can run and play and investigate her surroundings by herself without fear of transmitting her cough to the other kitties in our care. Vixen’s chronic upper respiratory infection and cough can best be compared to bronchitis or a chest cold in humans. Antibiotics have failed to work; but the staff believes that if she were in a home environment rather than in a tiny cage, she would have a better chance of getting well. Vixen is a sweet-natured little girl that deserves more than “solitary confinement” for the rest of her life. The staff says “to know her is to love her. But she never gets a chance to meet anyone because she is confined to the infirmary and there are around 100 other cats and kittens all competing for the attention of prospective adopters”. Is there someone out there willing to rescue this little sweetie from her caged cell? We certainly hope so. One requirement, however, is that there be no other pets in the home since Vixen’s cough could pose a health risk to other pets. Winslow is a 3 year old whose owner moved away and left him behind. Winslow is a great cat that anyone would love to have. He is friendly and likes being around people and other cats. Come visit our forthcoming boy. Chase is a 10 year old, male, Australian Shepherd Mix who came to SCAC because his owner lost his home and could no longer care for him, since they were living in the car together. Chase is a sweet and nervous boy who needs a companion who will be there

for him. He was originally adopted from a shelter as a five year old dog, so he understands what it is to be displaced. Chase is looking for someone who will give him plenty of love and time, since he is very focused on his handler. When Chase bonds, it is a very strong bond. We recommend an experienced, adult only home. Cats are fine but Chase would prefer to be the only dog. Second Chance Animal Center is located on Rte 7A in Shaftsbury, VT. Rummage Sale at St. James, Arlington

The Missions Committee of St. James Church, Rt 7A in Arlington is having a rummage sale on Saturday, November 14, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. You’ll find a great selection of clothing, household items and kids stuff. Crafts, baked goods and a light lunch of homemade soup and bread will also be available. Bag sale begins at 1p.m. All proceeds go to local and worldwide charities. Scholastic Book Fair at MEMS

The Manchester Elementary Middle School Parent Network Group will be kicking off their week-long, annual Scholastic Book Fair Friday November 6. The community is invited to attend the “Destination: Read Around the World” Book Fair during any of the posted hours. The book fair is sponsored annually by the MEMS Parent Network Group. You will find the newest, most popular and exciting books and educational products from more than 150 publishers for readers of all ages. The Book Fair provides children and adults in the community a wonderful place to purchase high-quality books at a low cost, as well as support a good cause. The PNG earns 30% of every product sold at the Book Fair, which they use to pay for many instructional materials and enrichment programs for the students at MEMS. The public is invited and welcome to shop at the fair during all Book Fair hours. Interfaith Harvest Potluck Dinner and Auction

The annual Harvest Potluck Dinner and Auction, sponsored by the Interfaith Council of the Northshire (formerly the Interfaith Council of Manchester and Dorset), will be held at Christ Our Savior Parish (St. Paul’s) in Manchester at 6 p.m., on Sunday, November 8. The very funny Bill Drunsic is the auctioneer and it’s worth attending just to experience his wit. The funds raised by the auction go to refill the empty coffers of the Emergency Needs Fund of the IFC. For those attending the potluck: last names beginning with A-G, please bring a main dish, HO, a salad, and P-Z, a dessert. For anyone wishing to attend only the auction, it will start about 6:45 p.m. Items or services to auction off in support of IFC’s Emergency Needs Fund will be welcome. Murder Mystery Dinner Reminder

The Dorset Players will be hosting a Murder Mystery dinner party at The Barn Restaurant in Pawlet, VT on Thursday, November 5 beginning at 6 p.m. sharp. You are cordially invited to the public hanging of the Malevolent Seven at the request of Judge Waylon Payne in the Wyoming Territory Town of Roadkill. Participants can select from eight different characters to portray such as Butch Chastity, Helena Handcart, Elvira-Lynn Fekshin, Wyatt Hertz, and Chief Breaking Wind. During the course of the evening information will be divulged that will help the guests solve the mystery of who is the mastermind behind this dastardly conspiracy of criminals. No acting experience is needed. Tickets are $35 apiece and include salad, main course, dessert, tax and gratuity. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to The Dorset Players’ flood prevention fund. Pawlet Film Series Continues

In a fortress of a school in France in 1948 professor Clement Mathieu sees an opportunity to bring some joy to the young boys’ lives by establishing a chorus. He also hopes to add an element of control to the rebellious atmosphere the iron rule of the headmaster has encouraged. His decision angers the headmaster so he must proceed in secret but the power of music and his generosity of self change his students forever. The film is rated PG-13. Released in 2004 it has a run time of 95 minutes. “The Chorus” will be shown with English subtitles on Tuesday, November 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pawlet Public Library. The Library airs films twice a month on the second and fourth Tuesdays. Movies are free and the library provides popcorn and punch. You may elect to bring your own cushion for the folding chairs.

ENTERTAINMENT Fall Into Inndulgence

Chris’s special guest on the current episode of “Inndulgence with Chris Sprague” is Leslie Keefe, well-known in the community. To celebrate fall, Chris and Leslie are cooking sauteed chicken breasts with apples and Calvados cream (the dish Chris cooked when she was awarded Four Stars for food, service and atmosphere from the Portland Press Herald - the first for an inn - while in Maine). The second recipe will be apple crisp with maple syrup (which recipe she developed for the Kellogg Company as a promotional piece for the Country Inn Specialties cereals, including “Inn at Ormsby Hill Blend”). Leslie Keefe, a native Vermonter, served as Executive Director of the Manchester and the Mountains Regional Chamber of Commerce for 7 years. In 2001, she began her own marketing consulting business and devoted her skills to the capital campaign of the Northshire Day School in Manchester (which was successfully completed in 2006). Since July of 2007, Leslie has been the Development Director for Long Trail School and continues her volunteer work for Burr and Burton Academy, Manchester Elementary Middle School and Zion Church. Keefe lives in Manchester with her husband Brian (Vice President of Government Affairs for Central Vermont Public Service) and their two children, Joseph, age 16 (a junior at BBA), and Regina, age 10 (in the 5th grade at MEMS).
