RAVNAH Holds High-Risk H1N1 Clinic

Caring Coins for our Troops Leaving for Afghanistan…

The You Are Never Alone Foundation along with many volunteers has shared over 5,000 individually sponsored Caring Coins with the troops preparing to go to Afghanistan and their families at the seven Yellow Ribbon Pre-Deployment Events throughout Vermont over the past two months. The two final events were held at the Equinox Resort in Manchester on Tuesday, December 1 and Wednesday, December 2. The wooden Caring Coins, which are crafted in Vermont with their message You are never alone, are reminders to the troops and their families that many people care about them and are grateful to them for their service to our country and also for the many sacrifices they are making on our behalf. It has been an honor to meet these wonderful men and women of all ages who could be our spouses, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and in my case even my grandchildren. Having had this first hand opportunity to meet and speak with the troops and their families has been a very touching experience for each of us who participated. The caring and support which accompanies each coin was very much appreciated by each recipient. On behalf of the You Are Never Alone Foundation, I would like to thank our volunteers Dody Marcotte, Mary Miner, Leona Pickstone, Shirley Farnham, Rose Boudreau, Bianca Ferrarin, Gioconda Ferrarin, Mildred Kaylor, Patty Chamberlain, Lillian Buckley, Marguerite Angerer and Mary Weeks for helping with assembling and signing the Caring Coins. Thank you also to the students at MEMS, Poultney Middle/High School; Christ the King School, VAC Sheldon Academy, Faye Honey Kopp, Manchester Leos Club for assisting with signing names to the cards attached to the coins. The Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice (RAVNAH) is holding an H1N1 flu vaccination clinic for high-risk individuals on Thursday, December 10 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Rutland. There is no charge for the H1N1 vaccination. Limited quantities of both the injectable vaccine and the flu mist vaccine will be available. Vaccinations will be provided on a “first come first serve” basis for the following priority groups: Pregnant women, those who live with or care for children younger than 6 months old, healthcare and emergency care workers, people age 6 months through age 24, and those 25 through 64 years of age with chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems. Those attending the clinics will be screened at the door to ensure they are in a high risk group. Per CDC criteria, people age 65 and older will not be eligible at this clinic, regardless of medical condition(s). In the event of long lines that may form outside, RAVNAH recommends that everyone dress appropriately for the weather and wear clothing that allows quick and easy access to your arm for the injection. A Handmade Christmas

During the weekend of December 12 and 13, Bogate Designs in Manchester Center will open its studio to offer families an opportunity to make holiday crafts together. Parents and children will be able to choose from a number of different craft activities to make handmade gifts, holiday decorations and ornaments, cards, gift tags and package toppers. There will be projects suitable for all ages — toddlers, children, teens and adults. Stacey Gates, owner of Bogate Designs, decided to offer this workshop to provide busy families with a venue where they could come together to create. “Many families don’t have the time, the craft supplies or the creative confidence to make things by hand. By offering a dropin workshop with a variety of projects, all the necessary materials, and lots of instruction and support, I’ve tried to eliminate these obstacles.” For those unable to stay, carry-out kits for several projects will also be available. The workshops will be held on Saturday, December 12, and Sunday, December 13, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. You may come for an hour or stay all day. Jeannette Nothern

Jeannette Nothern, a former employee of the Vermont News Guide many years ago, passed away on Monday, November 30, 2009. She was born in Paris in 1919, grew up and went to school in the Paris area and learned English at a time when few people could speak foreign languages. After the difficult years of the Second World War, Jeannette married Robert Nothern, who had come over to France with the U.S. Air Force at the time of the Normandy landings in 1944. Jeannette was a faithful friend to many and had a flare for fashion; she was also an excellent cook and mother to four boys. She travelled extensively including Russia, China, Morocco and all over Europe, and was the teacher of many French students. She was a great art and music lover and devoted much of her free time to visiting museums and going to concerts. She is survived by three sons, their wives, and four grandchildren. Jeannette met Huguette Peck at the Alliance Française when they lived in Stamford, Connecticut. Prior to moving to Belgium in 1969, she and her husband rented a house from the Pecks for a couple of years. Later, in 1984, her family returned from Paris back to the United States and settled in Manchester to work at the Vermont News Guide with the Pecks at age 65. This was her first exposure to personal computers, where she worked in the advertisement and real estate sections of the paper. She was employed by the Pecks until the paper was sold. Jeannette retired at age 75 and moved to Scituate, Massachusetts where she continued to teach French in private lessons. Four years ago she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and she quietly passed away on Monday, November 30, 2009. __________________________________________________

DUO Annual Holiday Bazaar

The DUO (Do Unto Others) community service student group at Arlington Memorial High School will host its annual Holiday Bazaar, Monday, December 21, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Special parent/adult shopping hours are from 3-6 p.m. This event is open to the community. Proceeds benefit area non-profit organizations. DUO Advisor Lori Hoyt assists the students with the fundraiser. “This bazaar has become so popular with people looking to purchase homemade food as gift items, and of course, everyone loves the challenge of the popular Silent Auction where folks can find that perfect holiday gift. Students try to outbid their parents and even their grandparents. Army National Guard 1st Lt. Robert D. Anuszewski has returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Operation Iraqi Freedom is the official name given to military operations involving members of the U.S. armed forces and coalition forces participating in efforts to free and secure Iraq. Mission objectives focus on force protection, peacekeeping, stabilization, security and counter-insurgency operations as the Iraqi transitional governing bodies assume full sovereign powers to govern the peoples of Iraq. Members from all branches of the U.S. military and multinational forces are also assisting in rebuilding Iraq’s economic and governmental infrastructure, and training and preparing Iraqi military and security forces to assume full authority and responsibility in defending and preserving Iraq’s sovereignty and independence as a democracy. Anuszewski, an automations officer, is normally assigned to the 261st Theater Tactical Signal Brigade based in Smyrna, Delaware. He has served in the military for three years. He is the son of Linda R. Anuszewski of Rolling Brook Drive, Clifton Park, New York, and John A. Anuszewski of Sherman Ave., Greenwich, New York. The lieutenant graduated in 2002 from Greenwich Central High School, and received a bachelor’s degree in 2006 from Siena College, Loudonville, New York. Army Pvt. Timothy A. Gordon has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Georgia. From My Corner Dedicated to my Friends at WMAH: ...jack and jill... (e-mail sent to my boss very early in the morning!) rt: I heard Jill whimpering in her sleep, then realized that she was standing by the bed and had to go out. I looked at the clock, 2:20 a.m. I got up and let her out. She did what she had to do, came in the house and we went back to bed. Twenty minutes later it started over again. We went downstairs and I went out with her. She did her “business” but this time she ran around a little afterward and then came in. As soon as she reached the top of the stairs she spied Jack and chased him down the front stairs into my workroom. Chaos ensued. Jack turned around and ran back upstairs with Jill tailing behind. I grabbed her, shoved her into

my bedroom and checked on Jack’s well being. He was fine, but I was really aggravated with Jill. I tried to go to sleep, out of breath and with my heart pounding. Jill’s feelings were too hurt to come to bed. Another 20 minutes went by and she had to go out again! OK! We trudged downstairs and I let her out. There is no urgency! This time she picks up a frisbee, stands up by the pool and wants to play! By now it’s a little after 3 a.m.! I’m fuming! Wide awake! She won’t come when I call her! So I left her outside, put a couple of cubes in a glass, filled it half-full with a Manhattan, and decided to share my angst with you, because of your good sense of humor, and I’m wide awake and have nothing to do! Nutcracker Date Set

The Ballet Center at Manchester has announced the dates for “The Nutcracker.” Performance dates are on Saturday, December 12 at 7 p.m. (snow date, Saturday, December 19, 7 p.m.) at Long Trail School, Dorset. The second performance will be held on Sunday, December 13 at 2 p.m. (snow date of Sunday, December 20 at 2 p.m.) at the Bennington Center for the Arts. Marilyn Cavallari, Ballet Center Artistic Director, said the cast consists of 75 children and adults from Southern Vermont and the Berkshire area. Over the years many local families have participated as families attending the fictional Stahlbaum’s Christmas Party. This year is without exception. The whole Samuelson family of Manchester, Matt, his wife Jennifer, and their three children, Paige, age 4, Hannah, age 5, and Emily, age 9, who will dance the lead of Clara in the Dorset performance. Serena Dublois will be Clara at the performance in Bennington. Brooke Mead of Williamstown will dance the lead of Mrs. Stahlbaum and Dr. Andrew Schmid will be Mr. Stahlbaum. Leads include the following: Sugar Plum Fairy is Alice Cole; Spanish is Lauren Miskovsky; Tea is Mia Pinder; Arabian is Marissa Farbman; Mother Ginger is Andrew Schmid; the King Mouse is Katy Jones; and the Nutcracker is Sami Misasi. This is a favorite holiday event that everyone enjoys. The music is by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky. Ticket prices are $18 for adults and $10 for children. Burr and Burton Honors Gift to the Dance Studio

Burr and Burton Academy recently dedicated the Dance Studio in the Riley Center for the Arts in honor of Lorraine and Dick Shell. The Shells, who are the parents of dance teacher Claudia Shell-Raposa, donated the dance floor, mirrors, ballet barre, props, costumes, and music from her Studio Workshop in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. This generous donation allowed the Performing Arts Department to completely refurbish the dance area and bring it up to the highest standards. Dance teacher and son-in-law

Local Irish Family Stories and Hubbard Hall Irish Dancers Headline Holiday Open House at Slate Valley Museum

On Sunday, December 13, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., the Slate Valley Museum offers a free, public Holiday Open House that features Irish Christmas traditions and a special exhibit of family stories, photographs, and prized possessions gathered from local descendents of Irish immigrants. Based on interviews conducted by Assistant Director and Educator Sarah Benway, the exhibit profiles five Irish families representing Granville, West Pawlet, and Fair Haven. As part of the festivities at the museum, a group of young Irish step dancers, ages 10-16, from Hubbard Hall, Cambridge, will perform with a five-piece instrumental Irish band at 2 p.m. The dancers are led by Hubbard Hall instructor Darcy May, who learned Irish dance as a child at the Fay and O'Connell School of Irish Dance in Pearl River, New York. Band leaders are Bliss and Robbie Mackintosh, also from Hubbard Hall. This year, the museum extends its holiday season by offering free admission from December 15 through December 30. The special exhibit, “An Irish Christmas: Family Stories from the Slate Valley,” along with traditional Irish Christmas decorations will remain on display through the month of December. “For the past several years, we have featured the holiday traditions of immigrant slate workers who came to the region from the 1840s through the 1920s from Wales, Ireland, Slovakia, Poland, and Italy,” says Executive Director Mary Lou Willits. “We decided that the educational experience we produce for the free annual holiday open house could easily be extended to more visitors over a longer period of time.” Also on exhibit through the end of December are “Remembering: Folk Art of the Old Country” and “Immigration as We See It: Rendered on Slate” by Granville Central School District Students. Dorset School Sixth grade Students Send Care Package to Troops

Between Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving break, sixth grade students at The Dorset School collected supplies for our troops serving in Iraq. Seventh Annual Community ‘Messiah Sing-Along’ in Arlington

St. James Episcopal Church will host the seventh annual community wide “Messiah Sing-Along” on Sunday, December 27, at 3 p.m. under the direction of Stephen Spinelli. Local birders and nature enthusiasts are invited to join the Winhall area annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) on Sunday, December 20. Participants may count from early morning to dusk covering many miles, or survey an hour or two in a small neighborhood area or just check on their feeder activity from their home. The Winhall 15 mile diameter count circle has the center on Winhall Hollow Road north of Gale Meadows. The west border is Manchester Depot, north — just south of Weston village; east at the edge of Windham village and south almost to Jamaica. It encompasses the villages of Peru, Landgrove, Londonderry, South Londonderry, Bondville, and Rawsonville as well as Stratton, Bromley and Magic Ski areas. Many counters are needed to cover this circle. Particularly important are counts from people living within this area who are feeding the birds. Work is underway for the 19th annual Community Christmas Dinner to be held on Friday, December 25, with only one seating at 2:30 p.m. This dinner began as an effort to make dinner for area folks who, for whatever reason they had, wanted to be a part of a community gathering on Christmas day. That list now encompasses families with children, seniors, young folks, single people and visitors. With a humble beginning serving 60 plus dinners the first year, this event has grown gradually over the years. Many faces return year after year. This is a grass roots effort. Everything is donated, including food, labor, the church kitchen and dining area, and all the accessories to make the meal complete. A traditional dinner is served. Although there have been minor changes over the years, you can count on turkey, dressing, ham, mashed white potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, vegetables, and a bountiful dessert tray. It’s a very tasty and satisfying meal; nobody goes home hungry. Kaki Fisher, founder of the Community Christmas Dinner, has been able to embellish the event through the generosity of donations over the years. Gifts are given to every participant and have several useful giveaways like grocery store gift certificates and gifts of food. The dinner is served on Christmas day at the First Congregational Church, across from the Equinox Hotel. The meal is cooked on the premises. No reservations are required and there is no fee. Bromley’s ‘Innkeeper Race Day’ Series Returns

Bromley Mountain’s “Innkeeper Race Day” Series is gearing up for another great season of super-economical – the rates are unchanged from last year – Wednesday afternoon skiing and riding. A Bromley Mountain tradition since, depending upon who you ask, sometime between 1950 and 1970, the Innkeeper Race Day began as an affordable, midweek skiing program for inn, hotel and motel employees who weren’t free to hit the slopes on weekends. Although it’s still called “Innkeeper Race Day,” the program is now open to any four-person team of skiers or snowboarders. Peoples’ Forum on Health Care

Tuesday evening at the Vermont Workers’ Center’s second Chittenden County People’s Forum on Healthcare held at St. Michael’s College, Senator Doug Racine, chair of the Senate’s health and welfare committee, announced that his committee will begin holding hearings on S.88, the bill that, with its House companion, H.100, will put Vermont on the road to enacting healthcare as a human right. “Healthcare is the most basic of human rights,” said Racine, who has scheduled the first public hearing — to be held jointly with the House health care committee — for January 12, exactly one week after the start of the 2010 legislative session.

Racine’s choice of Tuesday’s “Healthcare Is a Human Right” forum for the announcement was seen by many as recognition of the success of the Vermont Workers’ Center’s state-wide, grass-roots campaign at putting pressure on the Vermont legislature to enact healthcare reform legislation that embodies human rights principles. “It is clear that these efforts are pushing things in the right direction. We hope other Vermont elected officials will join Senator Racine as champions to make this moral shift to make healthcare a public good for everybody,” said James Haslam, Director of the Vermont Workers’ Center. When snow falls, look for Red-breasted Nuthatches, Pine Siskins, and Common Redpolls. Birders around the state are reporting Red-bellied Woodpeckers reappearing at their feeders. Blue Jays and crows are eating my seed faster than I can put it out. It seemed as though they were going through more than even they could eat, but it turned out that they were not the miscreants we imagined. A squirrel had figured out how to run out to the end of a (very) thin branch and launch itself onto the raised feeder. The branch is no longer there! We have enjoyed a lull in the hunting season but the muzzle-loaders will be out this weekend. It’s a relief to let the animals out without worrying about hunters in the woods behind our house. There is a plethora of planets in the sky this month. Red Mars and golden Saturn can be seen in the early morning, Mercury and Jupiter are in the western sky after sunset and even faint Neptune can be seen with a telescope. Here is an update on our chickens: Jackie is definitely a rooster. So far he manages an “arooo arooo” but is working on his “cock-a doodle”. The ladies took some time off from egg-laying but today was a two-egg day so it looks like we will be in eggs again - just in time to make eggnog for the holidays. Stop into the Dorset Farmers’ Market on Sunday, December 13, to buy all the fixins’ for this healthy and hearty fresh harvest soup! Prep Time: 25 minutes; Serves: 4 Ingredients: • 1 medium onion • 1 medium leek • 1 lb. carrots; peeled and cut into 1/2 in. slices • 1 green apple; peeled cored and chopped • 3 cups water, chicken broth, or milk • 1 tbsp. cooking oil of your choice Salt and pepper to taste 1. Heat oil in saucepan over medium heat. Saute onion and leek until onion is translucent, about 4 minutes. 2. Mix in carrot and apple and tightly cover pot. Reduce heat and cook until veggies and apple give up most of thier juices, about 8-10 minutes. 3. Add water, broth, or milk. Cover and cook until carrots are soft, about 30 minutes. 4. Let soup sit, uncovered for 20 minutes. Puree soup in a blender or food processor.

Bley Museum Open House Features Clock Collection

The Dorset Historical Society invites members and the public to its 2009 Holiday Open House at the Bley House Museum (Route 30 at Kent Hill Road, Dorset) on Sunday, December 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. A special feature of the event will be an exhibit of nine antique clocks on loan to DHS this month from a Dorset collector. Among the pieces on exhibit: a long-case English clock that runs for 30 hours; a French mantel clock with Sevres panels; an English railroadstation clock, and a Vienna regulator. Three of the clocks date from the 18th century; the others are circa 1825 to circa1880. Visit DHS during its Open House and discover in the museum’s clock labels all sorts of surprising details, such as why early mechanical clocks had handles. Hildene, the Holiday Place to Be

Whether guests choose to visit and tour the Lincoln family’s century old mansion decorated for the holidays or to browse in the Museum Store filled with unique items perfect for giving, Hildene is the place to be this holiday season. Now through January 1, those who come will experience the look and feel of Robert and Mary Lincoln’s home filled with an air of Victorian era “simple elegance.” The mansion was built by the couple in 1905 and Robert, Abraham Lincoln’s oldest and only child to survive to adulthood referred to it as his ancestral home. His vision would be realized as for 70 years, until 1975, direct descendants of our nation’s 16th president resided at the estate. A December visit provides a rare opportunity to experience the look and feel of Hildene during the winter holidays. With a bit of luck, it may even be snow covered. Mary Harlan Lincoln, the lady of the house, described her feelings about being there during the season in a Christmas thank you letter to her close friend, Laura Hollister and dated December 31, 1915. Mary describes Hildene in this way, “You’ve no idea how beautiful it is up here today … everything covered with the whitest, purest snow I ever saw, and this morning (4 degrees below zero) in a beautiful filmy white lace, studded with diamonds! It was simply fairyland, and lasted over three hours. Mr. Lincoln said he never in his whole life saw such a beautiful sight.” Community volunteers, led by Hildene volunteer Berthe Cowles,

AUCTIONS have created an ambiance this year that harkens “Welcome home for the holidays,” from the winterberries and greenery that greet guests at the porte cochere to the stunning fresh flower arrangement in the center hall and floral flourish in the family’s dining room set for dinner. The air will be filled with the scent of balsam and Orford cedar. The traditional reds of the pointsettias and amaryllis add color to the seasonal palette as greenery fastened with satin ribbon reminiscent of the Victorian era lines the staircase and historic interior columns. On Thursday, December 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., renowned local watercolorist Tony Conner will open a show of his work at The Gallery at Equinox Village. Primarily self-taught, Conner’s technique follows the traditions of the early masters while incorporating bolder elements from the modern approach. ENTERTAINMENT Flood Brook School Winter Concert

It’s that time of year again! We are pleased to let you know that the Flood Brook 2009 Winter Concert will be held on Thursday, December 10, with two shows scheduled in the gym. Please take note that the snow date is the following day, Friday, December 11. The first show will be held during school at 1:30 p.m. with the evening show at 6:30 p.m. Students in grades K-6 and the 7/8 Rock Band class will be performing by either singing, playing instruments or both. Granville Players Hold Auditions

The Granville players announce open auditions for their winter production, Ken Ludwig’s award-winning farce, “Shakespeare in Hollywood.” Auditions are scheduled for December 15 and 16 at 7 p.m., at the Chamber of Commerce building. You do not need to attend both nights. Set in 1934 on the set of Max Reinhardt’s movie, “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” there are roles for eight men and four women plus extras. We also have a need for plenty of backstage help, including but not limited to lights, sound, and set construction. High school students are also welcome to audition. Anyone interested in any aspect of this production should expect to attend at least one night of the auditions. There is also a need for period costumes (1930s) as well as Shakespearean. Winter Concert at Maple Street School

Performances of The Dorset Players’ production of “The Patchwork Girl of Oz”, a wonderful musical adaptation of the classic children’s story by L. Frank Baum, will continue this weekend.
