OUR READERS’ LETTERS ...small windmill...

A few weeks ago, I saw a letter in the VNG describing how the writer mounted a small windmill (the “GELGEN”) on top of his car that was connected to a storage battery. (No offense intended, but I thought for a moment I was reading the April Fool’s Day edition.) After charging the battery up from driving around, he removes the battery and hooks it up to a heater to warm his room. By calculating that if only 25 percent of the 100 million cars in the U.S. installed one of these devices, the writer determined they would produce enough

power each day to light a billion energy-saving light bulbs “at no cost to the end user” and presumably save the environment in the process. Now, if he just put a larger windmill on the car top and installed an electric motor, he could probably generate enough electricity to run the car! Now that would be perfect — think of the gas saved! Kidding aside, the reduced gas mileage from the wind resistance of the “GELGEN” is obviously the true cost of the “no cost” electricity. I’m not an engineer, but I suspect the extra gas wasted would cost more than

Two months ago I attended a VEH presentation in Bennington entitled, “A View of Vermont’s Economic Health.” It was a power point presentation complete with colorful graphs and pie charts showing a ‘tax and spend’ trend that will soon cripple the state of Vermont. I was stunned by the enormity of our fiscal situation. There is nothing “healthy” about our economy; in fact, it is on life support! How could our legislators let things get so out of control? Vermonter’s for Economic Health has taken this “show” on the road throughout Vermont towns since 2007, enlightening the public and warning legislators about our continued fiscal irresponsibility. His latest presentation, given in front of Vermont’s House Ways and Means Committee on January 6, 2010, finally hit home — after almost three years. Matthew McVay, a 2008 graduate of Mt. Anthony Union High School is a Midshipman fourth class at the U.S. Naval Academy. He received his first class ranking, which is determined by academic grades, peer ratings, conduct and physical fitness. His rank was 19th out of a class of over 1200. While at MAUHS he was captain of both the football and wrestling teams and a two time Vermont State Wrestling February 3, 2010

Champion at the 189 lb. weight class. In football he was nominated to the All State team. He is a member of the wrestling team at the USNA. Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Sarah E. Mattison is a member of the 158th Fighter Wing based in South Burlington,Vt., who graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, and completed the Defense Information School Still Photographer Course at Fort Meade, Maryland. While in basic military training, Mattison graduated as an honor graduate in the top 10 percent of her class. Her flight was presented the Drill Excellence Award for physical training. At the Defense Information School, she completed the course as an honor graduate, the second in her class; and was named Detachment 2 Airman of the Month, Phantom Flight. The National Guard member has served in the military fore one year. The still photographer is the daughter of Eugene W. Brambley of Colvin Ave., Shaftsbury, Vermont. Her husband, Stephen, is the son of Jesse L. Mattison of Crombie St., Burlington, Vermont. Mattison graduated in 1997 from Cambridge Central School, Cambridge, New York, and received a bachelor’s degree in 2001 from The College of Saint Rose, Albany, New York. ____________________

— by Susan J. Coons My hairdresser took last week as an all expenses paid trip to Santa Monica, California. She was attending special classes, and was very excited to be returning for another visit. She had spent a week there a couple of years ago and loved every minute of it! I don’t blame her! The smell of the salt air and the breeze off the Pacific Ocean hitting your face as you stand facing the world renowned entry to the Santa Monica Pier is truly exhilarating! You know from frequently reading this column that I love the beach. I was fortunate enough to grow up during the time when beach movies reflected the real thing. Well, sort of. Boys did bring their surf boards to the beach and stand them up in the sand, and girls did make a fuss over them. But we didn’t stand around singing and dancing, there was no moondoggie! Instead we threw one another in the water, chased each other around, and brought sandwiches, chips and coke for food and beverage. We listened to music on the radio, gossiped and told stories until 11 or midnight around a fire. The following Saturday we did the same thing all over again and never got tired of it. Annette and Bobbie made the movies, we had all the fun! Most of the time we went to Malibu Beach or Zuma Beach. When we had a little cash, we went to the Santa Monica Pier. You could get a real, hand-patted hamburger and fries for $1.25 and a coke for a dime at Al’s Kitchen. Not bad. Sometimes we’d just order a cup of fries and eat them as we walked up and down the pier. There was an arcade with take-a-chance games along the left side of the pier interspersed with several palm readers who lived in little shacks along the way. There were a couple of dusty gift shops with windows so dirty from the salt air you could barely see in or see out. The most nostalgic ride was on the hand-carved carousel housed in a over-sized yellow building that is now on the National Register of Historic Places. In the center of the carousel stood the original calliope pumping out all the wonderful tunes that can’t be forgotten in a lifetime. Gives me goose bumps to think of it now. No amusement area could be without bumper cars and as teenagers without driver’s licenses, we loved to crash and bump! When developers began buying up beach front property during the 1970s, and converting homes to condos, raising the rent (throwing out the poor souls with fixed incomes who had lived there for many years, and some of them becoming homeless), there was an effort by the City Council to tear down the pier. Developers wanted to create an “island” where the pier stood and erect a high-rise, exclusive resort hotel. We were living in Pasadena at that time, and became involved with the group that wanted to save the pier. A fierce battle raged. The developers had so much money and our little opposition had very little. Among those who wanted to save the pier were folks left homeless by the developers, actors, writers, local artists, and many long-time residents of Santa Monica. In the mid-seventies, a terrible storm ripped out nearly one-third of the pier, leaving the project to save the pier doomed. But better sense prevailed and the pier was rebuilt. I still have a menu that was printed by Al’s Kitchen in the mid 70s. The cover became the poster for the cause. It’s a photograph of a naked man struggling to hold up one of the pilings of the pier as he faces the storming ocean swirling about his body. I learned recently that the Santa Monica Pier had been restored. I checked it out on the Internet, and it looks great. The amusements and arcade are referred to collectively as Pacific Park. Gone is Al’s Kitchen (a

marker stands in its place); Sinbad’s is gone, too. An aquarium and Ferris wheel have been added, as well as other rides. I know I would love to walk the pier next time I visit Los Angeles. I’ll be sure to do that. (Two amusement parks that I have cherished in my memories and that have been paved over are River View in Chicago, Illinois, and Pacific Ocean Park in Venice Beach, just below Santa Monica. They were magical, a little seedy, exciting, and had so much more color and character than the over-sized amusements parks of today. Because the entrance fee was minimal we went there often. One was allowed to wander the dusty grounds and watch with amazement as children of all ages enjoyed themselves playing. I listened to the barkers in the arcade and girls screaming above the roar of the roller coaster, smelled pretzels baking and hot dogs steaming, heard laughter all through the park. The Pinball Arcade was always dark with neon lights flashing through the smoke-filled air. That was no place for a little kid. Alladin’s Castle held excitement and mystery for me. Yeah, River View and POP live on in my memories.) ________________________________________________

A Saxtons River Men’s baseball league is forming and looking for players 19 years and older. The home field is Vermont Academy, Saxtons River. The league plays 20 games in a season, from late May to mid August. Days of the games are Friday evenings and Saturdays. The cost per player is approximately $140. Third Annual Seabee Ball

The Adirondack Island X-14 of the Seabee Veterans of America will be holding their third annual Seabee Ball on Saturday, March 6 at the Old Hofbrauhaus (Ramada Inn) exit 19 off the Northway and Aviation Road. Free Middle School Skate Night at Riley Rink

United Counseling Service and the Southshire Substance Abuse Coalition are sponsoring another free skate at Riley Rink! Cosponsoring organizations include The Collaborative, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and DuFour Tours. Friday, February 5, students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will be admitted free-of-charge to skate at Riley Rink in Manchester from 7:15 to �� 9:15 p.m. Two buses will be available for students to take to Riley Rink. �� Buses will load at the Bennington Rec. Center. Buses will leave promptly �� at 5:45p.m. and return at 10 p.m. �� Middle School Students from any school in Bennington County �� and adjacent areas will be admitted for the free program. Skate rentals cost $6 and are not included, but bring your own skates if you have them! Mountain School Tubing Night

On Friday, February 5, starting at 4 p.m., the Coca-Cola Tubing Park will welcome students, family and friends of The Mountain School at Winhall. The special discounted rate of $10/personplus a suggested donation of $5 for a two-hour session will be only available to those from The Mountain School community. Two-hour tickets are normally $22. The tubing park is located in the Sun Bowl area of the mountain on the Big Ben slope. Stratton has a three lane, lift-powered tubing park that is a short walk from the base lodge and under the lights. The first session is from 4 to 6 p.m. and the second session will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased inside the Sun Bowl Lodge on the ground floor. Opening on Saturday, February 6, the Dorset Library will present a group show of local artists who paint together in a variety of media and styles. The group has been working together since the spring of 2009 when Maynard Deen, artist, interior designer and owner of the Gallery/Studio on Main Street, Route 7A in Manchester offered his studio as a place where they could meet and work together. Deen had met several of the artists through SVAC workshops. The group has grown and presently consists of ten artists, many of whom work in more than one medium, including pastels, acrylics, watercolors and oils. Members exhibiting are Dorothy Mulherren, Mary Cardel, Carole Tannen, and Muriel Roeth of Manchester, Marilyn Morrissey of Dorset, Connie Evans of Arlington, Maggie Murphy of Cambridge, and Jean Malone of Troy. The exhibit will feature works by a number of artists in the group, and will continue through “Early Snow” by Mary Cardel the month of January. In February the exhibit will change to allow the artists to show additional works. All will be for sale, and the art sales will benefit the library. Granville Assembly of God to Host Spaghetti Supper for Haitian Relief

Moved by the dramatic and sad scenes from Haiti, Granville Assembly of God has recently sent over $400 as immediate help to the victims of the earthquake. Wanting to do more, the church will host a spaghetti supper on Saturday, February 6 at 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the church located at 18 Bulkley Avenue, Granville, New York. The meal will be a homemade spaghetti and meatball dinner including salad and light dessert. All receipts from this event will be sent to the Haitian people. The Assembly of God has over 270 churches in Haiti and is an active and reliable conduit existing to get relief funds to the people who need help most. Mountain Town Event for Haiti Raises $18,000!

On Saturday evening, January 23, folks from Weston, Londonderry, Andover, Peru and Landgrove came together to contribute funds to help the people of Haiti. Nearly 200 residents and second homeowners gathered at the Weston Rod and Gun Club, which donated the use of the space, to bid on more than 100 items in a silent auction, plus five other donations that were sold in a live – and lively – auction. In ninety minutes the event raised more than $18,000, which was contributed to Partners in Health, a Boston-based charity that has been active in Haiti since 1985. Partners in Health maintains a 104-bed hospital and 8 clinics in Haiti. Partners is the provider of health care – without regard to ability to pay – to more than a half million people in the highlands of Haiti, and their facilities have been overrun with people fleeing from Port Au Prince. The event was put together in less than a week by a group led by Julie Hoyt, Marguerite Mason and her sister, Trudy Ernst, Deborah and Wayne Granquist, Jennifer Server, Nancy Donnelly, Mimi Neff and Deborah Peretz. But countless others pitched in to provide the auction items, snacks, and beverages for the event, and to set up, check out the successful bidders and clean up the premises. “Julie and I hope that all of you share our pride in the awesome power of all of us working together in response to a crisis,” said Marguerite Mason. “We were able to come together on short notice to give generously � to help others. It was an amazing � experience to see the outpouring of support. Super Food Sale to Beneﬁt Haiti Relief

The Wells Untied Methodist Church will present its Super Food Booth at the West Pawlet Fireman’s Woodchuck Festival on Saturday, February 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. located at the Mettowee School on Vermont Route 153, one half mile south of the Vermont Route 30 Junction toward West Pawlet. The great church cooks will have a large assortment of breads, pies, cakes, cookies, pastries and “finger licken” treats for Super Bowl nibbling. There will be a special fundraiser for ongoing fundraising for Haiti Relief. The Methodist Church conference through its world service UMCOR, is asking for continued funds, as well as Health Kits. All funds, 100 percent, will go direct to Haiti relief on the ground in Haiti. The Mission Event of the church will be selling maple syrup, maple sugar, jams, jellies and the church cookbook, “Temptations from the Pews.” These cookbooks contain hundreds of recipes from the famous church cooks. Sacred Harp Shape Note Singing in Cambridge, New York

SVAC Offers School Break Art Camps

The Southern Vermont Arts Center and Bogate Designs are joining forces to offer an exciting art camp during the February school break, Monday, February 15 through Friday, February 19. There will be ten separate half-day sessions and participants may register for one session, multiple sessions or for the full week. The full day will be from 9:30-3:30 consisting of a 2 1/2 hour morning session, lunch and a 2 1/2 hour afternoon session. Over the years they have added a cheese making facility, lodging, a farm stand, sleigh rides and educational activities. In 2001 the farm was put into conservation through the Vermont Land Trust and the generosity of the Freeman Foundation and many neighbors. They purchased a portion of the farm and continue to practice sustainable agriculture on the entire property. Topics & Tangents at Equinox Terrace

With the winter holidays still fresh in our minds, Terrace residents chatted and reminisced about holiday celebrations of long ago. Christmas tree trimmings included ornaments, tinsel, and icicles. Live candles, in tin holders shaped like pine cones that were clipped to the ends of the tree branches, were eventually replaced by electric light bulbs. Ornaments were often made of fragile blown glass. One year a family was having Christmas dinner, with guests, in the kitchen when a loud crash came from the living room. Everyone rushed in to find that the cat had climbed the tree and brought it down, and most of the glass ornaments were in little shards all over the floor. What did youngsters back then find in their Christmas stockings? Most common were apples, oranges, nuts, small change, and small toys — a little stuffed squirrel, for example. The children in one family always ran to find their stockings early in the morning and then went to their parents’ room to sit on the bed and open them. A gold bicycle appeared one Christmas morning for a very happy 11-year-old. She had been wanting a bicycle but had no idea when she would receive one. Another youngster was thrilled to find her dolls lined up on the sofa, wearing new clothes that her mother had made. A special treat for one small girl every year was the annual Christmas visit from her grandparents as they made their usual journey from Maine to Florida. One year they brought her a doll carriage and a doll, and her grandmother always helped her mother with preparing roast turkey or crown roast for dinner. We learned that in Sweden, gifts for the children were brought by the tomten, a mythical elf-like creature. Gifts were opened on Christmas Eve. The next morning everyone went to church, returned home to a breakfast of rice porridge, and feasted later on “tremendous amounts” of food, including lutefisk and ham. Running out of time, we took a few minutes to consider New Year’s and heard that one resident, growing up near New York City, pleaded to be allowed to go to Times Square on New Year’s Eve. Surely, at 15, she was old enough for the midnight celebration? Oh, no, said her father. He made her stay home until she was a few years older. Yes, we all remember being 15. February 3, 2010

Educational Scholarship Available to Women

The Poultney and Castleton Woman’s Clubs are pleased to announce that scholarship is available for women who wish to continue their education due to loss of support through separation, divorce, death or long term disability or unemployment of a spouse. Provided by The General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Vermont (GFWC-VT) this scholarship may be from $500 to $1500. In addition to an application women must submit a specific plan for their future training or education. This is the sixteenth year of this award which is funded through contributions from ten federated clubs around the state and from individuals. Barbara Jean Barker, late of Poultney, for whom this scholarship is named, was state federation president from 1992-1994, and very active in her club and community. The funds have aided winners from all areas of the state and walks of life. All completed materials are due to the Scholarship Committee chairman, listed on the application, by March 15, 2010. Applications for the scholarship may be picked up at either the Poultney Town or the Castleton Town libraries. The northeast’s newest therapeutic riding center, the Southern Vermont Therapeutic Riding Center, is looking for energetic people 14 years of age and older to volunteer their time at the center’s facilities at Winchester Stables on River Road in Newfane, Vermont. Volunteers need not have horse experience, only horse sense and a strong desire to work with and around horses and people with physical, cognitive and emotional needs. Knitting Blankets for Children Afﬂicted with Cancer

Yarns for Your Soul will be continuing our charity knitting campaign, “Knit for Your Soul and Theirs” in the month of February with blankets for children who have been diagnosed with brain and spinal cord cancer. The Making Headway Foundation will receive all collected blankets for children in treatment at the Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood disorders at New York University. Making Headway is a foundation which was established in 1996 to provide comfort for patients, support for families, and contributions to medical research in the field of pediatric neuro-oncology. Donations of handmade blankets will give warmth and comfort to children during treatments, and throughout their stay in the hospital. — Bonnie Dundas We were excited to see a male Red-bellied Woodpecker at a suet feeder this week. It’s been at least a year since we have seen one here. We also had a large (over 100) mixed flock of robins, starlings and Cedar Waxwings. Friends in Old Bennington are hosting a pair of courting Great Horned Owls who are thinning the rabbit population. I was seeing rabbit and deer tracks every morning in the snow around the feeders and around our trees and shrubs. When the temperatures are low and the snow is deep, animals have a difficult time finding enough food so I don’t mind if they do a little ‘natural’ pruning. �� The warmer days have been welcomed after the below zero �� temperatures. Scott knocked �� down all the large icicles hang�� ing from the windows so that � �� we wouldn’t have water dam� �� age when they melted. We didn’t know that rain was coming and would take care of the problem! The rain was not welcomed except by my chickens who do not like the snow and loved being outside and being able to scratch �� in the grass. �� The winter solstice was a �� month ago and days are getting �� longer. Happily, when I leave �� work at 5:00 it is not quite dark. �� The full moon on January 30 is known as the Full Wolf, Full ��

ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT Children’s Art Exchange

Art students at Flood Brook School in Londonderry spent several days in January preparing artwork to send to young students in Uganda. Olivia Bailey, daughter of art teacher Casey Junker Bailey and a former student at Flood Brook, is traveling to Uganda to work with children at an orphanage sponsored by the Swiss organization Kids of Africa. Along with art supplies and books, Olivia is hand-carrying portraits, photos, and other artwork created by Flood Brook students especially for Olivia’s new students. Excited by the prospect of exchanging artwork with children from Africa, Flood Brook students are learning about Uganda and anxiously waiting to receive artwork and letters in return. The TAS is a completely student-run production from auditions through rehearsals to the final public performance. This performance is the culmination of five weeks of rehearsals and a two-day workshop with top acting, directing and teaching professionals from New York City. The forty students who participated experienced what it is like to be professional directors, actors and technicians as their work was guided and fine tuned by these guest artists.

You won’t want to miss these performances. The box office opens at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are general seating with a $3 donation for Burr and Burton students, faculty and staff and $6 for the public. Some material in the performances may be inappropriate for young children; parental discretion is advised.

Children Celebrate Lincoln’s Birthday at Hildene

On Saturday, February 6, at 10 a.m. in the Beckwith Room, Hildene hosts “Abe Lincoln’s Hat,” its annual birthday party for President Lincoln. A parade up to the Lincoln family’s home to see the famous hat is part of the fun. The iconic stovepipe, one of only three in existence, is currently displayed in the exhibit,“The American Ideal: Abraham Lincoln and the Second Inaugural.” The event, appropriate for children grades one through four, also includes the interactive reading of Martha Brenner’s book, Abe Lincoln’s Hat, crafts, games and birthday refreshments. Materials fee for the event is $3 per child accompanied by an adult. Space is limited and pre-registration is encouraged. Winter History Series: Robert Todd Lincoln; Captain Of Industry

On Tuesday, February 9, author and historian, Jason Emerson, will make the second presentation of the 2010 Winter History Series, speaking on “Robert Todd Lincoln; Captain of Industry.” The focus of this year’s series is the multifaceted personality and life of Hildene’s own Gilded Age gentleman and former turn of the century Manchester resident, Robert Todd Lincoln. As the only child of President Abraham Lincoln and wife, Mary, to survive to adulthood, Robert carried what was often seen ironically as a burdensome name and legacy with him throughout his life. In his second talk, Emerson, an emerging Lincoln scholar who is currently completing a biography of Robert Todd Lincoln, will talk about Robert as businessman and industrialist. He will highlight his leadership positions with various banks, telephone and electric companies and the friendships that developed with other titans of the era as a result. He will look closely at Robert’s tenure with the Pullman Company as counsel, president and then chairman of the board during the apex of the company’s manufacturing success. Lincoln earned the respect of fellow industrialists during this time with apparent good reason as Emerson purports, “that he not only ran it well, but ultimately improved the business under his stewardship.” The speaker has often claimed, “If RTL weren’t overshadowed by his father, he would be studied by schoolchildren for his own accomplishments.” Jason Emerson has written about both of Robert’s parents, penning “Lincoln, The Inventor” (Continued on page 31)

John MacDonald in SVAC’s February Exhibitions Free Opening Party

The Southern Vermont Arts Center’s mission to exhibit and market the works of member artists and to present the finest quality exhibitions are prominently displayed in SVAC’s February Exhibitions, featuring Williamstown artist, John MacDonald. The exhibition opens in Yester House Gallery on Saturday, February 6, with a free opening party featuring live piano music by Gary Schmidt, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar follows from 2-4 p.m. John MacDonald’s love of realism is directly tied to his love of the craft of painting. To build a solidly believable space of form, light, and atmosphere from the fluid dabs of oil paints is to him a challenge and a joy. “I’m much more interested in manipulating the formal elements of painting than I am in creating any narrative content,” says MacDonald. This explains why he often omits architectural elements and always omits figures from his work. The inclusion of buildings and people, he explains, restrict a painting to a specific time and place. In addition to MacDonald, the February Exhibitions features graphite on paper drawings of Gerald Auten, paintings by Anne Harhay, Helen Young, Frances B. Ashforth, and Berta Burr and pastels by Susan Wadsworth and Tom Kerr. All artwork is for sale. The February Exhibition’s opening is graciously hosted by SVAC’s Hospitality Committee; the exhibition closes March 9. After the free opening, admission will be free to Members and children under 13, $5
