READERS’ LETTERS ...thank the voters...

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Dorset Historical Society, we would like to thank the voters in the Town of Dorset for approving our request for support at the March 3, Town Meeting. The most frequent comment we have heard over and over this past year – “I have lived in Dorset for the last xx number of years, and I have never visited the Bley House Museum! I can’t believe how much information is here.” It IS an interesting and growing collection and you don’t have to live in Dorset to enjoy it! Our curator, Susanne Rappaport, came on board in July, 2008. We have begun the monumental task of inventorying what the Society owns. Art Gilbert and other volunteers have been working to enter each piece of our collection into a searchable database. We have a LONG way to go, but, by becoming a DHS volunteer, it is one way to learn about and become involved in the history of our town. Do you know how many apple orchards were in this town in the early 1900s? Did you know Dorset was once the home of a cheese factory, a sawmill, a stocking factory, an iron company that made stoves, charcoal kilns and a cookie company? How many schools did Dorset have in 1940s? Did you go to one of those schools? What stories do you have to tell? or not tell! In February, DHS offered a

two session seminar on Historic Paint Finishes — Colors in American Paint and Historic Materials with Miles Bowen. If there is interest, it will be offered again. A second four session seminar will begin in April, An Introduction to Family History: Getting started in genealogy and beyond. I just want to say THANK YOU to all of those people who voted for me in this election. I know that I would have made you proud. I thought for the little campaigning I did it was pretty amazing to receive approximately 44% of the votes, it just shows me that other people want to see change with the board. After being at the polls for numerous hours I did realize that younger people need to vote and hopefully going forward they will. Every vote makes a difference. Congratulations to Mama Lattuga. Story Time, Movie Night

Service Notes

Army Spec. Evan J. Lourie has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal. The medal is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces, who while serving in any capacity with the Army have distinguished themselves by meritorious service or achievement while serving in a combat or non-combat area. Lourie received the medal for his service while deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is a heavy equipment operator with Alpha Company, 46th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy) at Fort Polk, Leesville, La. He has served in the military for more than two years. The specialist is a 2004 graduate of Washington Academy, Salem, N.Y

Air Force Airman Stephen C. Dunlap has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree relating through the Community College of the March 11, 2009

Air Force. He is the son of Carey Niemeyer of Sharon Drive, Fair Haven, Vt. Dunlap is a 2008 graduate of Fair Haven Union High School.

Private Nicholas Mackey graduated from Army Basic Traininhg at Fort Leonwood, Missouri on February 18, 2009. He will remain there and do his AIT Training as a heavy equipment operator. Nick is a graduate of Salem Central School, 2003. He’s is also a member of the Rupert Volunteer Fire Company. Over the years Nick has been involved in many activities. He plans to make a career in the Army. ____________________

Dorset Senior Connection

The Dorset Seniors will meet at the Wilson House in East Dorset on March 26, at noon, for a lovely luncheon. There will be a program at 1 p.m., on Jordan given by guest speaker Sue Mallen, who goes by the name “Mallow.” Mallow traveled to Jordan the first two week of this January. Jordan is a land of mesmerizing beauty and contrast. Mallow will tell us about her visit to the lost city of Petera, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. — Susan J. Coons uniform... I have a winter uniform and summer uniform. During the winter,when I’m not at work, I wear a turtleneck and sweatshirt with jeans and two pairs of socks. That’s it. And winter work days, when I come home, the first thing I do is put my flannel pajamas in the dryer to warm them up, feed the dog, take out my P.J.s and dress for bed! I don my heavy robe, and that’s my attire for the evening. I’m writing this on Wednesday, March 4, and it’s unseasonably cold outside. There’s still snow on the ground, but at least the sun is out! About this time of year, all of us are sick of winter, except maybe Jim. He’s a little nuts and he

snowboards. My friend Michael is tired of bringing wood in the house twice a day. The gloom bothers me. I turn on the ‘happy lights’ in my house, and light all the candles. The rooms seem cozier that way. I like my summer uniform better. It’s just a simple bathing suit. Sometimes I swim before work; always swim after work; do my chores and clean the house in my bathing suit. I have tops that I can wear for the sake of modesty, should someone drop by to visit. Ah, the freedom of warm summer days! You’ll never hear me complain about the heat or humidity! My imagination is running away with me as I sit here, in a somewhat chilly room, next to a cold window...I kept telling my son, when he was visiting here from Naples, Florida a couple of weeks ago, that spring is just around the corner! I forgot to mention that the block is very long!

Long Trail School Senior is National Merit Finalist

Jessica Carr, a senior at Long Trail School from Salem, NY, has achieved Finalist Status in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Jessica’s PSAT score was among the five highest in Vermont. The National Merit Scholarship Competition is driven primarily by PSAT scores from junior year testing. Initially, 1.4 million test takers enter the Competition. After review, these are pared down to 16,000 semifinalists. Semifinalists represent the top 1% of test takers in each state. ___________________

Thirty-four art students from Burr and Burton Academy have just returned from 12 days abroad, doing a “Grand Tour” of Venice, Florence, Pisa, the French Riviera, Paris and Amsterdam. The trip was arranged by EF Tours and led by EF tour director Antonio Capella. The trip was chaperoned by Dean and Dawne Polis, and BBA Art Department Chair, Betsy Hubner. The three have taken students on European art tours for the past 13 years, but this trip was the most ambitious to date. Students saw works of art from several periods of Art History, including the David in Florence, the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, the Impressionists at the Musee D’orsay, and Rembrandt and Van Gogh in Amsterdam. ________________________________________________

Teen Fashion Show to Beneﬁt Ballet Manchester

The first teen Fashion Show will be a fundraiser for Ballet Manchester, and will be held on Friday the 13 of March at the Equinox Hotel in the Rockwell Room at 7 p.m. The stores showing their clothing are BCBG MaxAzria, Lilly Pulitzer a Five Season Store, theory and TSE. These stores will show casual wear and formal wear for the prom season. Burr and Burton Academy students modeling are: Morgan Green, Dana Florin Weiss, Kendra Bogossian, Candice Chingos, Emma Houser, Alex Jones and Ben Comar. The Long Trail School students are: Misty Lewis, Marah Bragdon, Elise Penge, Olivia Vastola, Julia Callo, Isabel Barnard, Jessica O’Keefe Alini Questel, Ryan Masotti and Eddie Byarano. Arlington High School models are: Mia Lentinello, Brooks English, Ariel Grover, Selene Clark, Rachel Brown, Amy Horton, Megan Phelps, Zera Bruk and Cameron Ray. The Mount Anthony Union High School model is Kelsey McFadden. Advanced tickets will be available from the models for $12 or at the door for $15. 35th Annual Bondville St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Sunday, March 15

What comes to mind for the people in Bondville when they think about the month of March? Lions, lambs, basketball, the U.S. OPEN and of course, Bondville’s Annual St. Patrick’s Day parade! In 1974, three proud Irishmen were running the Red Fox Inn in Bondville. Transplants from NYC, they could not bear not �� marching somewhere on March �� 17th. So, off they went weaving �� their way through the few water�� ing holes in Bondville, waving �� the Irish flag. �� Over the years, the parade has �� evolved into an authentic hometown community event. It has become a rite of passage into spring for the area and a chance to reconnect with those you have not seen throughout the busy winter season. Music is always a huge focus for the parade. The �� award winning American Legion �� Marching Band will be playing �� once again. Tom and Cindy Logan, a couple of Boston Irish, and owners of the Red Fox Inn have been organizing the parade since 1976. There is always plenty of corned beef and cabbage, Irish Soda Bread, and lots of Irish music �� into the wee hours at the Red Fox �� that day. ��

Create Empty Bowls�� at �� Manchester Town Hall

The organizers of Empty Bowls 2009 are excited to announce �� another opportunity to cover your hands in clay, be creative, �� hang out with friends and folks you see at the post office or in passing on the street, and help a great local cause. On Thursday, March 12, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., the purpose of this Manchester Town Hall event is to create some of the 1,000 clay bowls that will be used for the April 4 Empty Bowls fundraiser. The recipients of the April 4 �� proceeds will be the Community �� Food Cupboard, Arlington Food �� Shelf, and Bennington Food and �� Fuel Fund. All civic organizations are �� encouraged to bring representation; it would be great to see firefighters, police officers, rescue squad members, town staff, mem�� bers of the Lions Club, Rotary, �� VFW, and other groups. �� Snacks will be provided. Come �� out of the cold, take off your coat �� and have some fun!

Arlington Garden Club News

Spring’s arrival will be given a big nudge and the Winter blahs will be put on hold when the Arlington Garden Club inaugerates its 63rd season on Tuesday, March 17, with a traditional potluck luncheon and program at Arlington’s American Legion Hall, starting at noon. The featured speaker will be Donna Andersen, manager of perennial maintenance at the Mettowee Mill Nursery. Her presentation will follow the luncheon and precede the business meeting to be conducted by Dorothy J. Closs, now serving her second term as Club president. Donna Andersen’s versatile 19-year career at Mettowee Mill Nursery started in the perennial department growing Mettowee’s famed perennials. She went on to designing gardens, customer consultations and maintaining landscapes. She now is much in demand as a lecturer and for her various workshops. In Arlington, she will present a workshop on making an English garden planter, a large trough-shaped container made of hypertufa, a light-weight faux concrete. Club members are reminded to bring a luncheon dish or salad (and a place setting). Desserts and beverages will be provided by the hostesses, headed by Pat Clancy, assisted by Nancy Boardman, Raebeth Hitchcock, Sarah Smith, Joanna Taylor and Lynn Williams. New members are always welcome to join the Arlington Garden Club, whose roster presently includes residents of Arlington, Bennington, Manchester, Sandgate, Shaftsbury, Sunderland and Shushan, N.Y. Members share an interest in the Club’s ongoing civic beautification and educational programs, environmental responsibility, and growing in knowledge of gardening and floral design. Community Spaghetti Dinner

A Community Spaghetti Dinner will be offered on Saturday, March 14, starting at 6 p.m., at the Federated Church of East Arlington. This free will offering dinner is to benefit the Youth Mission Trip with Youth Works, an organization committed to making a difference in the lives of people in dire situations by doing home repair, maintenance, working with children, food and clothing distribution and other community activities. The youth will be spending a week of their summer vacation in Brooklyn, NY, beginning the week by working at a homeless shelter and soup kitchen. This dinner is sponsored by the Men’s Fellowship. Burr and Burton Academy senior Alexander Evanczuk has advanced to the final round in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. He is among 15,000 finalists from across the country who are in the running for 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards which will be announced in the spring. Evanczuk is the son of Janet and Stephen Evanczuk of Dorset, Vermont.

Carol Berry Offers Van Gogh Workshop

Artist, art-historian, educator and Van Gogh scholar, Carol Berry, Is presenting a three-session exploration of the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh, “Vincent Van Gogh: His Language of Compassion,” at the Southern Vermont Arts Center on March 11, 18, and 25, from 9:30 a.m. Vincent Van Gogh, - noon. Willows at Sunset, oil, 1888 Participants in “Vincent Van Gogh: His Language of Compassion” will examine Van Gogh’s trajectory as he developed his art into a new language of compassion that he hoped would bring consolation and comfort to all who struggle. The Southern Vermont Arts Center’s annual Art From the Schools exhibition, a showcase of artwork by area students from the elementary grades through high school, opens in Yester House Gallery with an opening artists reception from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, March 14. U.S. Census Tests Will Be Given In Hoosick Falls

Town of Hoosick Supervisor Marilyn Douglas announces that arrangements have been completed with the U. S. Census Bureau for testing for employment opportunities for the 2010 Census to be given at the Town Offices in the New York State Armory on the following Tuesdays in April: April 7, April 14, and April 28. Avalanche U-12 Girls Hockey Team Champs!

By now, everyone in Northshire knows the tale of “The Little Hockey Team that Could”! This is the 2007-2008 hockey story that recounted the course of the Avalanche U12 girl’s hockey team as they rose from obscurity to become the 2008 Vermont AB State Champions! The Avalanche offense included the talents of Daisy Sullivan, Kristi Lewicki, Jordan Harmon, Robin Ross, Eliza Breed, Margaret Zarvis, Maddie Oliva, and Hannah Dingley, scoring goals with precision and skill. The tenacious capability of Ryder Ferrone, Lucy Bisselle, Megan Grabher, and Angela Eucker secured the Northshire team with awesome defense. Goalies Kaylie Benson and Jenn Dorr took turns blocking, catching and superbly deflecting the pucks that came their way.

SPIN, Staying Put in the Northshire, is a new nonprofit membership organization being formed in the Northshire. They offer wide-ranging support to members in Manchester, Dorset, Arlington and Sunderland who wish to remain independent, active and socially connected to their communities as they grow older. A questionnaire will be mailed to residents aged 50 and over in midMarch to ascertain the level of interest in SPIN and to learn more about the specific concerns of older persons. “SPIN will serve as a conduit to existing state, county and local services, both public and nonprofit, that are geared toward supporting people who wish to age in place,” said Manchester resident Monica Knorr, a clinical social worker and gerontologist who is a founding member of SPIN. Livestock Disposal

The disposal of livestock mortalities in Washington County is a serious problem, particularly in Greenwich where there is a carcass dump on Ryan Rd. Although a “special use permit” for a carcass composting operation on the property was denied, the problem persists. It is likely that carcasses continue to be disposed of in unknown quantities, from unknown locations, deceased from unknown causes, in a haphazard way, in Greenwich, possibly Jackson, and who knows where. Maybe in your backyard! Unfortunately, the Town of Greenwich has not insisted the dump be cleaned up. The situation will get worse when spring reveals a rotting mess. The Town needs to act now to avert this potential disaster. Navigating the laws regarding the disposal of livestock mortalities in New York is difficult. Cross-referencing between DEC, Agriculture & Markets, county and town planning or zoning reveals no resolution. The best interests of public health and safety are caught in a collision between regulations, exemptions, and the pit-falls of individual interpretation. State regulations are obsolete, do not accommodate for today’s reality, and leave our wetlands and water supplies exposed to environmental threats. These shortcomings in oversight need instant attention locally and statewide. Fortunately, DEC, Ag & Markets, Cornell Waste Management, and Farm Bureau are developing valid guidelines for large-scale livestock mortality disposal. They plan to redouble their efforts to encourage farms to compost their own carcasses. Our local officials should support this effort and insist farms do not send their mortalities off-site to be dumped in our backyards. Cornell Cooperative Extension offers assistance on proper carcass composting. Many farms are already doing it. The Greenwich situation is worrisome because of its proximity to the Battenkill and its tributary, Trout Brook, but this issue is statewide. Please contact your local officials. Manchester Historical Society Hosts National Forest Archeologist

The March 18 meeting of the Manchester Historical Society will present Forest Archeologist David Lacy in a program entitled “Seeing is Believing: Hidden History of the Green Mountain National Forest.” Lacey, a graduate of Boston University and UMass/Amherst, is the Green Mountain archeologist for the federal government. His program will explore a host of historic land uses and activities of which physical evidence has been uncovered within the National Forest landscape in Vermont. Once active, now obscured, these remnants include mills, homes, kilns, and travel routes. Lacey will show images of such unearthed historic sites, structures, and features, and discuss how these hidden relics are discovered and revealed. In addition, part of the program will be an update on current and proposed “heritage projects” within the Green Mountain National Forest. The MHS meeting will take place at Manchester’s First Congregational Church on Wednesday, March 18, at 7 p.m. The meeting is open to the public; refreshments will be served.
