May is Osteoporosis Awareness Month. There is a silent stalker in our midst and 10 million Americans over the age of 50 are the victims. That crippler is osteoporosis, a dangerous thinning of the bones.

Another 34 million Americans have low bone density and are at risk for developing this condition. Osteoporosis is known primarily as a woman’s disease, but an estimated two million men have it also. A man is more likely to suffer an osteoporosis related fracture than he is to get prostate cancer. Many people, men and women, have osteoporosis and don’t even know it, until a bone breaks. Approximately one in two women and one in four men over the age of 50 will have an osteoporosis related fracture in their remaining lifetime. In 2007,

osteoporosis related fractures cost an estimated $19 billion. By 2025, experts predict these costs will rise to $26 billion. A fracture can also cost a person their ability to live independently. The following steps can optimize bone health and help prevent osteoporosis: get adequate calcium and vitamin D in your diet, engage in regular weight bearing and muscle strengthening exercise, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol and talk to your healthcare provider about bone health. In Bennington County, both men and women can prevent and reverse osteoporosis by participating in a Green Mountain RSVP Bone Builders class. Bone Builders classes are taught by certified volunteer instructors. The classes are on-going and free of charge. There are now 10 classes in Bennington County, with several more in the works and almost 100 classes statewide. People who participate in the twice weekly classes report increased strength and flexibility, improved balance and over all well being. Pancakes Improve Sight and Hearing

When you come and enjoy the pancakes, bacon and Vermont maple syrup the NorShaft Lions will be serving up on Sunday, June 7, you will not only have a great breakfast but you will be helping the Lions support their Sight and Hearing programs. Lions have restored sight to 7.5 million people through cataract surgeries, prevented serious vision loss for 30 million people and improved eye care services for hundreds of millions. Lions also take an active role in promoting hearing loss prevention and assisting those who are deaf or hearing impaired. Proceeds from the NorShaft Lions Pancake Breakfast will go towards helping the sight and/or hearing impaired in our local community. The NorShaft Lions Club’s Third Annual Pancake Breakfast is Sunday, June 7 from 8 a.m. -noon. The menu includes pancakes, bacon, sausage, Vermont maple syrup, juice and coffee, tea or milk. Scott Thomas Scholarship Fund

All proceeds from the tournament are donated to the Scott Thomas Scholarship Fund. This scholarship has been set up for any person wishing to continue their education and needs financial assistance. We have helped out young people with one or two year courses in mechanics schooling, cosmetology, culinary, nursing, forestry, computer courses, etc. Tournament entry fee is $65 per person, being played at Lake St. Catherine Country Club Saturday, June 13. Four man or ladies scramble format. After the tournament we all go back to the VFW in Manchester for a cookout with great door prizes. Golf cart, food, door prizes for $65 person. Library Tees Off

The fourth annual golf tournament to benefit the Rupert Kittay Library is scheduled for Saturday, June 13 at the Lake St. Catherine Country Club . There is still time to register to play. Proceeds from this event will again help to defray operating costs and continue current programming at the Kittay Library. Local Women to Run 200 Mile Race in Honor Of Late Glen Frank

What started out as a “girls’ weekend” has evolved into a fundraising effort in honor of an outstanding community member who recently passed away. Twelve local women, all of varying ages and degrees of athleticism, decided to run the Green Mountain Relay Race, a 200 mile continuous relay race that begins in Jeffersonville, VT, and ends in Bennington, VT, the weekend of June 20, Father’s Day Weekend. They are raising money to benefit the college fund of William and Ian Frank, sons of the late Glen Frank (South Londonderry, VT), who passed away unexpectedly last November. each had their own intent or goal. Some are turning 40 this year, some are looking to improve their lifestyles, and some are avid runners who want to enjoy this experience with close friends. The idea has now taken on a different scope because the women decided to take their personal initiative and turn it into a fundraiser to benefit the college fund of a local family who experienced an unexpected loss. Thus, the “FRANKFooters” relay team was born. Glen Frank was a man who many respected and admired. He was valued in our community as a businessman and occasional bartender, but most notably for his love for his family. Many on the FRANK-Footers team had a personal connection to Glen and his family, and he is dearly missed. The FRANK-Footers will be hosting a kick-off party with dinner and music at the Red Fox Inn, Bondville on Saturday, May 30. The Italian themed dinner is $25 and includes entrance into the bar for evening entertainment. Food is being donated by the Red Fox Inn and Mulligans of Stratton. Entrance for music only is $10. There will be a raffle that evening at the event and tickets are currently available at $5 or 6 for $25. You do not need to be present to win. There are several prizes including a A Wilderness Systems Kayak Package including a Tsuanami 125 Touring Kayak, Adventure Technologies Paddle and a Harmony Life Jacket donated by the MacDonald Family, $500 gift certificate donated by Jamaica Cottage Shop, KHS Alite 100 bike donated by Mtn. Riders, five one-day boat rentals donated by Equipe Sport, rounds of golf donated by Manchester Country Club and Equinox Country Club, Bromley Thrill Zone passes donated by Bromley Mountain, dinner for two donated by The Perfect Wife Restaurant, gift certificate donated by the Green Door Day Spa, a free chimney sweep donated by the Winhall Sweeping Company, and other prizes to be announced. The team is also accepting donations in drop buckets at the Hapgood Store in Peru, VT and at Sherry’s Café in Manchester, VT. 100% of proceeds from these fundraisers go to the college fund. Arlington Announces 2009 Valedictorian and Salutatorian Arlington Memorial High School (AMHS) Principal Kerry Csizmesia announced the Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the graduating Class of 2009. Heather Snow received valedictory honors, and Matthew Belnap earned salutatory honors. Snow and Belnap will address their classmates during the AMHS graduation ceremony, Saturday, June 13, at 12 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. Michael Lampron, chief operating officer of Imaging On Call and AMHS alumnus, will give the keynote address. Honored with the University of Vermont Green and Gold Award and Middlebury College Book Award, Snow is a member of the National Honor Society, served on the Student Council for two years and was elected

president of her class as a freshman. She earned a top score of five on her AP Statistics exam during her junior year. Snow was a reporter for the Eagles’ Nest student newspaper for four years and received first place honors for her recitation of Hayden Carruth’s “Regarding Chainsaws” in the annual AMHS Public Speaking Contest. Since the age of seven, Snow has raised Holstein calves, chickens, goats and ducks. She will major in environmental science/studies at UVM where she received a four-year, full-tuition scholarship. Snow is the daughter of Wayne and Sheila Snow of Sunderland. Currently Student Council President, Belnap has served on the Student Council since his freshman year. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has received numerous achievement accolades including awards for excellence in Spanish and Advanced Placement English. As a junior, Belnap earned a top score of five on his AP Calculus Exam. He is a well-respected student leader and was chosen to represent AMHS at the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Conference and the Vermont

Athletic Director’s StudentAthlete Leadership Conference. A gifted athlete and musician, Belnap has excelled within the AMHS sports and music programs. He was a member of the varsity soccer, basketball and baseball teams and was named team captain of each sport his senior year. During his high school years, Belnap played saxophone for the AMHS Band and piano for the AMHS Nuclear Fission Ensemble. Belnap received acceptance to Boston College, Bowdoin College, Middlebury College, Northwestern University and Syracuse University. He plans to study Journalism at Boston College within the school’s Arts & Sciences Honors Program, a highly selective academic program in which just six percent of first-year students are asked to participate. TriState Pennysaver News Launches New “Five to Revive” Program to Help Boost the Economy

During these tough economic times, there is an all-too-thin margin between success and failure. Many good businesses have been caught up in the recession and have had to close their doors. Manchester Lion Pamela Nichols was recently honored by Lions International for being an Everyday Hero. Put Feet to Your Face Sunday

The Mission Committee at the First Baptist Church of Manchester is hosting a project called Put Feet to Your Face, on Sunday, May 31st, 2009. Members and friends of the Church will do odd jobs for needy members of the community after being commissioned during the morning worship service. The 23rd Annual Manchester Antique & Classic Car Show presented by Land Rover Experience and the Manchester & the Mountains Regional Chamber of Commerce takes place June 13 & 14 at Dorr Farm in Manchester Center, Vermont. Burr and Burton Academy will hold the 2009 Alumni Reunion the weekend of June 12-14. The festivities begin with a Back to School Campus Tour on Friday at 1 p.m. Graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2009 will be at 5:30 p.m. on Pettibone Field. The Reunion Dance at the Eagles will be held from from 9-11 p.m. Brunch will be served on Saturday, June 13, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Rowland Center. Sydney is a 9 month old female Siamese mix. The sweet, friendly girl came from a home that had 80 cats. Sydney is outgoing, playful, and enjoys attention. Please come meet this beauty.

Claude is a Treeing Walker Coonhound who came to SCAC from Arlington Animal Control. He was a stray who was unclaimed by his owner. He is very shy, sweet and vocal, especially when it is time to eat! Claude can be a little insecure and has separation anxiety. We have been working on crate training. He is beautifully proportioned. Claude can go to a home with children thirteen and older. Cats are fine and other dogs are possible upon introduction. We recommend basic obedience, socialization and leash training. If you are looking for a young hound that will blossom under your care, then come and meet our special Claude! Construction has recently begun on the home for Jennifer and Patrick Siegrist and their three children which will be built on Asa’s way in North Bennington, a short distance from VT Rte. 67A. Habitat hopes to develop a core group of Bennington area citizens that are interested in working to see that more homes can be built for families in the Bennington area. In addition to the construction work, people are needed to work on publicity, fundraising, public relations and so on. Habitat homes are affordable because Habitat families receive a nointerest mortgage based only on the cost of land and materials. These mortgage payments combined with donations of labor and materials help pay for the next Habitat home. Each Habitat affiliate is self-supporting and

Dorset Church Auction The Marble Church in Dorset celebrates its 100 year anniversary The United Church of Dorset and East Rupert is celebrating 100 years of the marble church on Church Street in Dorset! As part of the year-long celebration they will be conducting a fundraising auction on Saturday, May 30, under tents on Church Street in Dorset. The live auction will begin at 11 a.m. with the preview of items/services being offered beginning at 10 a.m. Many fine items, special services and good times will be offered for sale in this auction. Everything from gourmet dinners for 4-6 people, gardening services, cleaning services, landscape/backhoe services, a private airplane tour of the Vermont countryside, a weekend stay on a lakeside cottage in northern Vermont, antiques, collectibles and fine products have been generously donated by various residents and merchants of the Northshire. There have been dozens of items and services donated for this sale, but we are accepting donations up to the time of the sale. Mark Putnam will be the auctioneer of the day, soliciting bids from attendees for the special items offered. All proceeds benefit the centennial celebration committee, with money earned used to fund upkeep and improvements to the church building itself. Victoria Biller and Sierra Janik of Maple Street School Chosen for Opus 18

Maple Street School eighth graders, Victoria Biller and Sierra Janik, were recently selected by the Vermont Midi Project to have their original compositions featured in a musical performance at Haskell Opera House, on April 29, in Derby Line, Vermont. Victoria Biller’s latest music composition, Robin’s First Flight, was written for string and woodwinds. She has been composing music for over four years, and has been playing the violin for seven years. Victoria’s brass composition, Suspense, was chosen and performed at last year’s Opus 17. Sierra Janik’s composition, Opus 18 V2, was also written for string and woodwinds, following the guidelines which are set by the Vermont Midi Project. Both winning pieces will be performed by professional string and woodwind quartets. Eighth graders at Maple Street School compose music throughout the year using the Sibelius music program. Maple Street School is an independent, day school serving children in grades Kindergarten through eighth grade. Timothy Treadwell was an American bear enthusiast, environmentalist, amateur naturalist and documentary filmmaker. He lived among the coastal grizzly bears of Katmai National Park in Alaska, for approximately 13 seasons. At the end of his 13th season in the park in 2003, he and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were killed by a grizzly. Director Werner Herzog pieced together Treadwell’s own footage to create this documentary of Treadwell’s journey into parallel wildernesses. One in Alaska and one in his mind. Treadwell was known for getting extremely close to the bears he observed, sometimes even touching them and playing with bear cubs. What was he thinking? This film was released in 2005 with an R rating for language. The movie is 100 minutes long, won 12 awards and six more nominations. It will be shown in English with closed captions at the Pawlet Public Library Tuesday May 26 at 7:30 p.m. Admission to the film is free as is popcorn and punch. It is acceptable to bring a cushion for the folding chairs.
