Army National Guard Pvt. Jessica L. Speidel has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises. Speidel is the daughter of Mel Speidel of Nashua, New Hampshire and niece of Christopher Beckwith of Fort Edward, New York. Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Evan S.

Shippee graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Lori Shippee of Maple St., Brattleboro, Vt. Army Reserve Pvt. Katarina E. Kerber has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Manchester Town Clerk Announcements

If you are a Vermont resident age 62 or older, you are eligible for a Green Mountain Passport which gives you free access to Vermont State Parks. The fee is $2 and the Town Clerk’s office has these applications. The “doe” permits have arrived. The deadline for sending them in is August 27, 2009. The Vermont State Parks is having a wonderful program. It’s called Venture Vermont 2009 Outdoor Challenge. Come into the Town Clerk’s Office and pick up your Venture Vermont scorecard. You then keep track of activities that you complete by checking the box to the right of the activity and make sure you take a photo of you completing the task. When you reach 250 points you win free day entry into Vermont State Parks for the rest of the 2009 season and for the entire 2010 season! Entries must be received by October 15, 2009. Summer hours for this office begin on Friday, June 26. Ice skating rinks are not exempt from the hard economic times we are all experiencing. Last week’s article in the Rutland Herald outlining the probable closing of Rutland’s new rink brings this very issue uncomfortably close to home. Imagine for a moment, where our children would be, or what they would be doing without Riley Rink in our front yard. Operating on the tireless and committed energies of so few people, this extraordinary resource provides diverse services to everyone in our Northshire community. Riley Rink is open year-round from morning till night so that we can participate in public ice skating, hockey, lacrosse, and soccer. We all know how team sports enrich the lives of everyone involved. Self discipline, respect for self and others, sportsmanship, physical exercise, positive social interactions, learning to think globally instead of just about oneself, taking responsibility for ones actions, stress relief, becoming task oriented, are but a few of the qualities to be gained. The area is seriously lacking for an indoor recreational facility for our children and young adults. Without the Rink and its Friday night skating, Broom Ball, New Years Eve parties, snow day programs, these children would be left to their own devices for entertainment, healthy or otherwise. Only 10 years young, the Rink has grown tremendously in its efforts to provide outreach programs. Firstly, public skating is available to everyone several times a day, holidays included. Understanding the expenses involved in playing hockey, and not wanting any exclusion due to finances, the Jonathan Levin Fund was created. Through this scholarship program, many children are now partidcipating in this sport who might not have been able to otherwise. In addition, the Rink recognized the need to provide opportunities to our handicapped community members and thus the Connections program was born.The art of skating involves coordination of both physical and emotional acuity, stimulating muscles and thought processes that remain dormant if not challenged. Imagine the freedom of gliding on ice for those with physical challenges! Halloween and Christmas also offer the opportunity to celebrate at the Rink with its festivities, decorations and parties for the Connections participants and their families. The Rink has instituted many environmentally correct measures of their own that ensure a safer and cleaner world for our children. In short, Riley Rink at Hunter Park is a treasure that must be respected and taken care of, in the same way that it takes care of our needs. The cost of maintaining the rink, the ice, and the property in its pristine condition is prohibitive. In order to continue offering its exemplary services, it cannot survive on skating fees or annual fundraisers alone. Much the same as schools play such an important role in shaping our children’s lives and ultimately, their future, so does the Riley Rink at Hunter Park. Please give thoughtfully and generously, knowing that your doing so will benefit not only the present but future of our entire community as well. — Claudia Bookspan

Rutland County Humane Society is Hosting a Kitten Shower

Please help the Rutland County Humane Society (RCHS) take care of our new arrivals this Summer. Last year we took in over 500 kittens and it looks like we’ll see that many this year as well. Manchester Rotary Club, seen “clowning around” on the cover of the Guide, Manchester Lions Club and the Manchester Chamber of Commerce are co-presenters of the fabulous Circus Smirkus coming to Manchester July 8 and 9, offering two performances each day. The Battenkill Grange #487, West Arlington, VT, presents a Community Citizen Award each year to an outstanding member of the community. Ecumenical Service Jump Starts Summer Lunch Program

On this first day of summer, Sunday, June 21, the entire community is invited to the Battenkill Grange Pavilion on the Green in West Arlington for an Ecumenical Service of Worship to kick-off the brand new Summer Lunch Program. The service involving The Federated Church of East Arlington, St. James Episcopal Church, The Sandgate Methodist Church and Christ Our Savior/St. Margaret Mary will begin at 10 a.m. with a focus on children and hunger. Music accompaniment will be provided by Paul Opel. Following the worship service a cookout to celebrate will take place with hot dogs, beverages, condiments and paperware provided. Each household is asked to bring a salad if their last name begins with A - L or a dessert if their last name begins with M - Z. The weekly Summer Lunch program will officially begin distribution on June 23 and run through August 18. Please call 375-2548 for additional information. The Northshire Bookstore to Host Manchester Chamber Visitor Information Center

The Manchester and the Mountains Regional Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the “new location” of the Visitor Information Center for the Manchester and the Mountains Regional Chamber of Commerce. The Northshire Bookstore is partnering with the Chamber to bring this new Visitor Information Service into the center of the community where more visitors can be served more easily and more often. A special Visitor Information desk has been installed at the front of the bookstore. An additional brochure rack has been placed in the vestibule to hold member brochures. A 24/7 Electronic Kiosk (part of a Vermont Tourism initiative) has been located at the bookstore to share the Manchester region and all of Vermont that enables visitors to our region to discover what we have to offer and assist them in planning their stay in our state. A sign has been added to the bookstore signage identifying “Visitor Information” and our kiosks will direct people to the bookstore for information throughout the summer. Our 802-362-2100 visitor inquiry line is forwarded to our staff person at the bookstore to continue to maintain the customer service flow necessary for the Chamber to make referrals. Until June 29, the desk will be staffed on the weekends only. After this date it will be manned 7 days per week. Saturday hours are 10-5 and Sunday hours are 11-3. Haystack Hustlers Meet

The Haystack Hustler Seniors will meet at the Pawlet Church, June 23, for a pot luck lunch at noon. The program will be presented by Dr. Robert Treat. He will talk about “The Country Vet: Then and Now”. This is a rescheduled program, due to an emergency. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Treat and hear about Veternarian work of the past and how it has evolved to the present. Many of us will remember his father Dr. Edwin Treat, and his farm visits to our community. We will be on our summer schedule after the meeting on June 23rd. Watch for information. Our programs and activities are open to all Senior citizens. There is no membership required or dues to pay. We collect food for the Pawlet Food Shelf and hold a 50/50 raffle at each meeting. Plans are under way for a trip this fall with part of the expense paid for by the SWVCOA Transportation Grant. The Terrace knitters meet every week to make afghan squares. Mettawee Students Visit State Capitol

Members of the Mettawee Community School 6th grade, Class of 2009, visited the Vermont Statehouse during their recent visit to Montpelier. Students visited with John Malcolm VT-D and also participated in a mock trial in the Supreme Court chambers. In addition to this class trip to Vermont’s Capital, the 6th Grade has been busy wrapping up their school year by going to Boston and presenting their endof-the-year play, “Return of the Glass Slipper.” June 17, 2009

The Bennington Rotary Club is presenting Ethan Allen Days Colonial Fair on Father’s Day Weekend, June 20 and 21, at Colgate Park, Bennington. This will be an exciting event for the entire family. Watch battle reenactments, a sutler’s market, activities for children, good food and beverages, vendors, crafts, history and music. Ethan Allen Days originated in West Arlington, and eventually migrated to Sunderland, Vermont where it was “home” for several years. Later the lush Hildene Meadows became the next venue for Ethan Allen Days. However, Hildene has been evolving and changing their mission to that of the Civil War Era. They have branded Hildene the “Lincoln Family Home”. This change left the re-enactors and their event searching for a new location. After visiting several sites in the area, leaders chose Colgate Park as an excellent site for their encampment as well as battle re-enactments. The next task was to find an organization that would present this event. Don Miller, of Bennington Rotary, stepped up, offering to have his organization take up the task. Bennington Rotary is a non-profit organization, raising funds for scholarships and other causes in our local area. Colgate Park is located on Route 9 West in Bennington, Vermont. There will be signs indicating General Admission. Cost of this event is $10 for adults; $5 for children; and $25 for a family. Dorset Theatre Festival Announces ‘St. Nicholas’ by Conor McPherson

‘Kids Summer Lunch’ Needs Volunteers and Contributions

In 2006 the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger Project identified an urgent but overlooked need: Children who qualified for free or subsidized lunch during the school year were without it come summertime. Mid-day meals became an added burden for those families -- and some kids simply did without. 2009 is the fourth year in our area’s response to this need, spearheaded by the Northshire Interfaith Council. The initial program in 2006 served fewer than 60 children. Since then, the number has climbed steadily: to 80 (‘07) and 123 (‘08). This year, 200 is the projected count of children, which translates into 9,000 lunches. Bags are distributed each Tuesday at several locations in the area for nearby students. In Manchester, a tent at the Town Hall beside the Community Food Cupboard is the Summer Lunch site. A group of volunteers is busy at assorted jobs, some before 8:30 a.m., picking up fresh produce at Dutton’s, transporting food to other distribution points in Danby and Rupert, and at the Mettowee School. Some people are busy erecting the tent and “breaking camp” at the end of the day, while others packs bags and hand them out between 10 a.m. and noon and again from 2 p.m. to 4 at the tent. Each bag is designed to feed a child lunch for five days. The fare might include bread, tuna fish, peanut butter, jelly, soup, juice, and fresh fruit. Also, thanks to volunteers, each bag contains a surprise packet with activity sheets (crossword puzzles or other games), which have proven a big hit with the young recipients. Other possible enclosures: a tooth brush, a coloring book. (Continued on page 22)

A $1,000 grant from the Stratton Foundation will help Dorset Nursing Association (DNA), an office of Rutland AreaVisiting Nurse Association & Hospice (RAVNAH), host its annual Visions Camp, a two week summer day camp serving girls entering grades 6 through 8. Last week staff from Merck Forest & Farmland Center spent a day at Mettawee Community School helping the students plant their school garden. Each of the classes came out, and the whole school participated in weeding, bed preparation, planting, transplanting and watering. This summer parent volunteers will take turns tending the garden. The vegetables grown there will be used in the school lunches prepared in the cafeteria this fall. Now that’s eating local! ��

Adelaide Werger’s Paintings on Display at the Dorset Playhouse

Dorset Theatre Festival and Long Trail School will exhibit a collection of paintings by Adelaide Werger, at the Dorset Playhouse from June 17 through June 27. The exhibition will kickoff with a reception at the playhouse honoring Ms. Werger’s life and work on Saturday, June 20 from 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. Art will be available for purchase, and the proceeds will be divided between Dorset Theatre Festival (in support of its 2009 Summer Season) and Long Trail School (for student scholarships). Adelaide Werger’s collection is presented in conjunction with Dorset Theatre Festival’s production of “St. Nicholas”, a Conor McPherson play about the mischief of storytelling, directed by Carl Forsman. The Manchester Music Festival recently received a bequest from the estate of the violinist Eudice Shapiro (19142007). Eudice was a faculty member of the MMF’s sixweek summer chamber music program from 1987 to 2001. Ms. Shapiro’s accomplishments as a violinist and master teacher placed her in the highest echelon of musicianship. Among many credits, Eudice was the first female concertmaster of RKO studios in Hollywood. During her career, she played as soloist under conductors such as Fritz Reiner and Eugene Goossens, and composer Igor Stravinsky. She also regularly performed chamber music with legendary musicians such as Arthur Schnabel, Bruno Walter, Gregor Piatigorsky and Jascha Heifetz. The MMF was fortunate indeed when Eudice travelled from her home in Studio City, California each year, spending fourteen consecutive summers in Manchester, VT, as a solo and chamber music performer and ensemble coach. The bequest of $20,000 will become the beginning of the Eudice Shapiro Memorial Scholarship Fund. Interest income from this fund will, in time, assist annually a gifted violin student studying at the MMF’s summer Young Artists Program.

Littlest Music Festival Opens with Woods Tea Company

On Father’s Day, June 21, from 4 to 6 p.m., Dads and family and friends should celebrate the opening of the 20th annual Littlest Music Festival. Featuring the Woods Tea Company, the only group to play at all 20 years of the festival, the concert series is held each summer as a benefit for the Community Food Cupboard. The Woods Tea Company is comprised of founding member Mike Lussen, Howard Wooden, Tom MacKenzie and Patti Casey. They perform Celtic music, sea chanteys, folk music and original works. With a following described as “Teabags”, they draw an audience from the tri-state area. Using an unusual variety of instruments such as the Irish tin whistle, hammered dulcimer, an Irish drum and wonderful voice blends, the Woods Tea Company gives a memorable concert unlike any other.
