As we all think about ways we can help our communities thrive, one simple way is to support our local businesses, whether the farmers’ markets, bookstores, newspapers, or hardware stores. Another way that comes to mind is the “buy one, get one free” concept found in most supermarkets. What if we each bought a number of these goods, especially those we might buy anyway, and then donate the free items to our local food shelf? This can be a painless way to support our neighbors in need each week. Indeed, as Martha at the Manchester Food Shelf suggested, this can become instead the “buy one, give one” campaign. Dear Ms. Coons, I know you’ll not print this letter to the Editor. It’s an answer to Hal De Bona’s letter of June 24. Anyone who calls Rudy Guiliani a “pygmy” has never walked the streets of New York City prior to his time as Mayor or after 9/11. The thing that’s wrong with the Republicans is they have lost their North and should have worked much harder to thwart Mr. Obama’s proposals. They failed with the stimulus, omnibus and the budget which has, in his short time, increased U.S. debt greater than all the Presidents from Washington to Bush combined! My granddaughter’s credit cards have been raided before they have one. Mr. Obama promised three million new jobs. We’re losing them at about 500,000 a month. If we can’t stop his ridiculous health care plan or cap and trade, we’ll all pay and lose millions more jobs. My prayer is that the Republicans work ten times harder to thwart Mr. Obama’s proposals. Mary Gawenus Barclay

A memorial service will be held to honor Mary at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, at the Second Congregational Church in Londonderry, VT. Mary passed away on April 18 at Crescent Manor Nursing Home in Bennington. She was born in Bergenfield, NJ, on November 3, 1926, to William and Mary Kershaw. She attended Bergenfield schools and Columbia University. From 1944 to 1949, she worked for British Information Services in New York City while she completed a degree in voice at Juilliard School of Music and worked with the New York Opera Company. In 1949, she married Leney Barclay, and in 1954, they moved to Vermont. Mary taught music in the Londonderry area schools for many years. Mary and Leney joined the Peace Corps in 1971, beginning a long career of international service that took them to many foreign countries. Besides assisting her husband in developing vocational training programs, Mary taught music, and often found herself the only available medical resource, aided by her copy of “Where There Is No Doctor”. She received many commendations from foreign governments and personal acknowledgments from the U.S. State Department. Mary leaves behind her husband Leney of S. Londonderry; daughter Carol Barclay of S. Londonderry; daughter Janet Ayala of Houston, TX; son William Barclay of Johannesburg, South Africa; and daughter Ellen Girerd-Barclay of Gothenburg, Sweden; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mary’s remains will be retained on the family property on Spring Hill Road in S. Londonderry. Please do not send or bring flowers. Department of the Army Civilian Jeffrey M. Greer has received the Army Research and Development Achievement Award. He received the award for his work in enabling technologies for muzzle-brake development designs that enhance the overall system mobility and lethality through system weight reduction and parallel-guided munitions development compatibility. Greer is a structural analyst and lead engineer with the Picatinny Arsenal, NJ, and has a total of three years of military service. He is the son of Jerome M. and Barbara Jean Greer of Montcalm St., Ticonderoga, NY. His wife, Alyssa, is the daughter of Michael J. and Carol A. Coffey of Mohawk Trail, Queensbury, NY. Greer is a 1999 graduate of Ticonderoga High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree July 8, 2009

in 2003 from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NY., and a master’s degree in 2006 from The University of Albany, NY. Army National Guard Pvt. Truman D. Young IV has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, GA. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training. During the nine weeks of basic combat training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons employment, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid skills, and Army history. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experienced use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman. The Advanced Individual Training course is designed to train infantry soldiers to per-

form reconnaissance operations; employ, fire and recover antipersonnel and anti-tank mines; locate and neutralize land mines and operate target and sight equipment; operate and maintain communications equipment and radio networks; construct field firing aids for infantry weapons; and perform infantry combat exercises and dismounted battle drills, which includes survival procedures in a nuclear, biological or chemical contaminated area. Young is the grandson of Truman and Natalie Young of Route 140, Tinmouth, VT. The private is a 2006 graduate of Mount St. Joseph Academy, Rutland, VT.

Knights of Columbus Host Breakfast

The Knights of Columbus will host their monthly breakfast on Sunday, July 12, in the St. Paul’s Parish Hall, Manchester, VT, after the 8 and 10 a.m. Masses The menu includes juiced, scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon and sausage. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 6 and under. Funds generated from this breakfast will support the Knights’ charitable works. ________________________________________________

NDS Receives McCarty Grant

��

The Northshire Day School is happy to announce that they have received a McCarty Grant from the Stratton Foundation. The money received from this grant will go toward a week of pottery during the Day Schools summer camp program for school age children. Terri Lazarus, from Turning Wheel: Art and Nature Exploration Center, is heading the week with some great projects created throughout the week, based on “Clay and Nature” theme. The campers in this class will use clay to create projects that can be used in nature such as birdhouses, garden sculpture and wind chimes, as well as preserving images of nature in clay through press molds. NDS is very grateful to the Stratton Foundation and is very excited to be able to provide this art experience for the children in their program. NDS would also like to announce that they have limited availability in their infant rooms. The West Hebron United Presbyterian Church put on its first Funventure last Tuesday. It was amazing and every one enjoyed the games, crafts, and stories. It was from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with a provided dinner. This is happening every Tuesday through August 11. Every week we are traveling to different biblical cities. This week was Nazareth, and we learned about carpentry. Next week we are traveling to Jerusalem. Also 3-5 graders can come for fun and games on Thursday July 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. If weather permits this will be held outside. ________________________________________________

Original Compositions at the Georgi

Come to the Georgi Thursday, July 16, at 7 p.m. for the premier performance of original compositions by Kevin Warren. A concert in two parts: traditionally classical performed by a chamber ensemble of three musicians and improvisational, multi-layered modern performed by Kevin. Seventh Annual Ross Powers Foundation Golf Tournament

The seventh annual Ross Powers Foundation Golf Tournament will be held Friday, July 10, at Tater Hill Golf Club, 6802 Popple Dungeon Road, Windham, VT. Registration begins at 1 p.m.; the tournament begins at 2 p.m. A dinner reception and awards ceremony with great prizes will be held for the competitors following the event. This is a four person best ball scramble with two drives taken from each team player. Basic Team entry fee is $125 per golfer or $500 for a team of four. Every player in the tournament receives a player gift bag and individual post tournament dinner tickets. From my Corner

— Susan J. Coons ...a little aggravated... Last December my Sirius Radio was stolen from my car. The guys who did this trashed everything in the glove box, etc. They have been apprehended but I probably will never receive compensation for what they stole. As soon as the crime was discovered I called the police. The police said they would be right over. This was about 8:15 a.m. I waited and in the meantime, called Sirius Radio. The call went to India. I have been told that English is the language of the land there, but I can’t understand it the way it is spoken. The conversation was very frustrating for both of us. “Excuse me? What did you say?” “Huh?” “Would you repeat that, please?” “I’m sorry, I didn’t understand what you said.” Repeating dates, repeating account numbers, names on accounts (my daughter signed me up; my son-in-law purchased the radio; he has his own account and she hers, with her name the same as mine on her account). This led to a tremendous amount of confusion. And, I COULDN’T UNDERSTAND A WORD!!! To top it all off, the police never showed up. (They did call me later in the week and have been very conciliatory and kind.) My daughter’s account was canceled by mistake, making it necessary for her to call and straighten out the accounts. Something that could have taken a few minutes took about half an hour. I have been vigilant about locking my car since that incident. However, last Friday, as I pulled in the driveway after work, I noticed that Steve Gallant and his crew were in the process of removing the tree that had fallen on the house earlier this month. The rain has prevented them from taking it off the property. I got out of the car and talked to the guys. They were doing a great

job, and the yard was cleaned up beautifully. I went back to the car, brought in my things, and because of the distraction, forgot to lock the doors. Sure enough, some little creep stole my Sirius Radio overnight! I have to go through the cumbersome routine of reporting a stolen radio to the police and Sirius, again! I’ve dreaded this for a week! I know that every person in the world should have a means for supporting themselves and their families. The global economy overwhelmingly shows us we are truly our brother’s keeper. However, there must be a way to help employment around the world without sending jobs for Americans overseas. Seeing a mistake on a credit card bill is frustrating. Trying to explain the error to someone I can’t understand compounds my frustration. Why can’t we put Americans to work taking care of the calls that originate in America? Well, I’ve vented enough. If you’ll excuse me, I have to make an overseas call to New Delhi. _____________________

An effort is being made between Sunderland Elementary School teachers, SES administration, PTA members, and parents to begin a garden for school and community use this summer. In the fall the school will begin a 6-week snack program for students from what is grown in the garden this summer. Plots will be available next summer for community members to begin their own small garden as well. In early July a plot, selected by teachers, will be rototilled on the SES campus. Planting will begin during the first week of July when SES summer camps begin. A school and community work day will be held on Saturday July 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. to install the fence and finish garden preparation. Refreshments, breakfast foods, and a picnic lunch will be provided for all those who attend! Green Mountain RSVP Wish List for the Northshire

Join other local RSVP volunteers to make an important contribution to strengthening our community. A few hours of your time will make a big difference. Following are some of the current Manchester area nonprofit needs that are waiting for volunteers. United Way of Bennington County has a new office in Manchester that needs a limited time office duty/receptionist. Two or three volunteers can be combined to develop a flexible schedule. Hildene, home to Abraham Lincoln descendants for 70 years, is entering a new tourist season and needs volunteers to help tell its story, greet visitors in the Welcome Center, facilitate travel around the grounds by van, help out in one of Hildene’s magnificent gardens, or lend a hand at Hildene’s new Rowland Agricultural Center. Training will be provided. Friends Of The West River Trail is about to open its new Depot trail head facility and museum in South Londonderry. Volunteers receptionists will be needed to help greet visitors and answer the phone. Savvy Seniors – volunteers needed to form an acting troop to do skits for elders about Medicare ad Medicaid fraud, elder abuse and consumer fraud. The skits are pre-written and the audiences have given rave reviews. ConnKerr Cancer needs individual volunteers or sewing circles to make colorful pillow cases for children hospitalized with cancer. Summer Concerts on the Green Series in Manchester

The annual Summer Concerts on the Green series begins July 10 at 7 p.m., with a performance by Ken Anderson and Rebecca Hall promoting their new album, “Hungrytown”. The Rupert Historical Society is pleased to offer a program by wellknown Vermont author and Civil War historian, Howard Coffin. Stratton Foundation Presents 110% Award to Pat Glabach

A community foundation to the core, the Stratton Foundation’s success depends upon many people in the community working together to make a positive impact on the community in which they live, work and visit. Many people contribute generously of their time and talent to organize events and to solicit contributions. Each year the Board of Directors recognizes the person, other than board members and staff, who has contributed the most to the inner workings of the Foundation itself. Art of Gardening

The Courthouse Community Center in Salem will be offering their Al Fresco Gourmet Brunch on Sunday, July 26, from 11:30 a.m., until 1:30 p.m. Thirteen volunteer chefs representing restaurants from Manhattan to Salem will show off their culinary skills. Patten Oil Pink Truck Raises Funds for Community Cancer Center

The Community Cancer Center is honored to announce the establishment of the Patten Oil Patient and Family Assistance Fund to benefit patients receiving treatment at the Community Cancer Center at Rutland Regional Medical Center. Patten Oil will designate a portion of every gallon of fuel pumped from their new pink fuel truck to the Community Cancer Center. The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company will present a free public reading of “Stoop Stories”, the latest work of award-winning writer/performer Dael Orlandersmith, on Monday, July 13, at 7 p.m. In “Stoop Stories”, Orlandersmith transforms herself into a stunning array of characters, from an irate club-goer to an elderly Holocaust survivor. Music and poetry interweave with master storytelling to take the audience on a whirlwind journey through urban street life. Orlandersmith first performed “Stoop Stories” at the Public Theatre in New York as part of the Under the Radar Festival, and it had its world premiere this spring at the Studio Theatre in Washington, DC. The actress/playwright developed the play further at the Weston Playhouse’s second annual artists retreat in late April/early May. Its next incarnation will be at The Goodman Theater in Chicago this fall under the direction of Jo Bonney. The reading will last approximately 70 minutes and will be held at the Weston Playhouse, located off Route 100 on the Village Green in Weston, Vermont. In June, Hildene dedicated the Lowerre Family Youth Education Center. The need for the new facility was necessitated by the ongoing success of the historic site’s educational programming component, and the burgeoning number of students participating, growing from 200 in 2002 to more than 3,000 this year. Plans for a permanent education center became a reality, however, thanks to a generous gift from Paul and Ursula Lowerre and family. Local benefactor Barbara Riley then helped insure the continuation of programs with a gift establishing an education endowment fund. From the mighty winged Monarchs to engineering beavers; from the wetlands of the Battenkill to the smallest vernal pool; from the ecology of the stream bottom to the astronomy of the night sky and from invasive plants of our region to small scale sustainable farming and cheesemaking, local students are offered a myriad of programs in history, the natural sciences and agriculture each year at Hildene. Passionate about the importance of experiential learning, Education Director Diane Newton believes in offering diverse learning opportunities for children. She notes that Hildene’s history programs offer such fascinating topics as the Lincoln family, historic crafts, the “War Between the States” with a focus on the very local Vermont story of the Equinox Guards and life in a Civil War camp and how Abraham Lincoln used the telegraph to win the war. Historically speaking, Hildene’s programming had centered largely on tours of the home and Formal Garden. In 2003, the mission was expanded to add emphasis on education and the Lincoln family. Current educational programming utilizes the entire property; the house, gardens, wetlands, streams, meadows, forest, ponds and vernal pools and even the telescope that belonged to Robert Todd Lincoln. Sandlot ball dredges up memories of a generation ago - kids playing unorganized sports in an empty lot, school yard, or in the street. Today, it’s uncommon to see our kids playing anything without adult supervision, usually via a structured program such as Little League baseball, Pop Warner football, or town/school organized sports programs. This summer the Manchester Parks and Rec. will offer the Sandlot Soccer Swim program (6th consecutive year) to allow our kids to play the game without drills, laps, lecturing coaches, whistle-happy refs, and screaming parents; in other words, no pressure. The only thing that’s organized is the date and time. Otherwise, the kids choose their own teams; ref their own games; make their own rules; and have their own fun. After the game, players are invited to cool off in the pool using their free pool pass. Soccer time and swim time are usually divided equally, but as everything else, that’s up to the kids. Across the country, people are running or walking on August 23 in remembrance of the soldiers lost in these two conflicts. Join us at 9 a.m. on Sunday, August 23, at the Grange in West Arlington, just off Route 313 at the covered bridge. This is a noncompetitive, non-timed event to honor our soldiers presented by the BattenKill Valley Runners. Last year over 60 walkers and runners joined together in West Arlington to participate in the inaugural Run for the Fallen event. We hope to increase the number of participants this year, and extend a special invitation to families and friends of soldiers, plus current military personnel and anyone who has served in the military. Komen Vermont-New Hampshire Race for the Cure® is a celebration of all breast cancer survivors, one local survivor will be singled out for a very special honor, the Survivor of the Year Award. The Survivor of the Year Award is designed to honor a breast cancer survivor who has celebrated at least two anniversaries of her/ his original breast cancer diagnosis, has faced the challenges of the disease and turned them into personal triumphs. Nominations for the 2009 Survivor of the Year Award will be accepted through July 10. Frank Mason (1921-2009) Retrospective Closes 7/14

The prophetically timed Frank Mason Retrospective (Mason died at the age of 88 on June 13) currently on display as part of the Southern Vermont Arts Center’s June Exhibitions, closes on July 14. With it will close the opportunity to see and acquire canvases for private collections from a body of masterworks that will almost certainly never be seen in the region again. One of the Art Students League of New York’s most heralded instructors for six decades, Frank Mason was ranked among the pantheon of both working artists and art historians. In their July 1 obituary of Mason, The Times (UK) set Mason alongside “Goya, David, Delacroix and Degas,” for his expertise in and advocacy for the historically sensitive restoration of the Rembrandt collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as well as Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel frescoes in the Vatican. Noting Mason’s propensity for earning major commissions, The Times noted that “One of the most important came in 1962, when the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta commissioned him to paint a series of eight large pictures depicting the life of St. Antony of Padua for the 11th-century church of San Giovanni de Malta, in Venice. O’Keeffe began using watercolors to explore abstraction. Dove openly admired O’Keeffe’s early pieces, which eventually sparked his own interest in the medium. Although Dove and O’Keeffe’s approach to imagery ultimately diverged, their shared interest in capturing the ephemeral, fugitive traits of nature — the play of light on water, the transitions of the sun and moon, and the rustle of the wind through grass — was the basis for an abiding commitment to each other’s works and a profound aesthetic connection that lasted throughout their lifetimes. ENTERTAINMENT MMF Performs Masterpieces from the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries

The Manchester Music Festival performs a program featuring works by Haydn, Brahms and Astor Piazzolla on Thursday, July 16. “Haydn is considered to be one of the ‘founding fathers’ of classical music,” says Ariel Rudiakov, MMF’s Artistic Director. “He was a friend and mentor for Mozart and a teacher for Beethoven. We will perform one of his ‘London Symphonies,’ arranged for chamber ensemble by Haydn’s contemporary and publisher Johann Peter Salomon, and edited by Christopher Hogwood.” The Brahms offering is the quarDavid Deveau is one of the featured tet for piano and strings, Opus 25, artists at MMF’s July 16 concert. begun in 1856 but dated 1861 by the composer. “Brahms set very high standards for himself, and he destroyed much of his output,” says Rudiakov. The work was first performed with Clara Schumann as pianist, and it helped secure for Brahms his ranking as heir and successor to Beethoven. Astor Piazzolla lived from 1921 to 1992. He was both a composer and a virtuoso on the bandoneon – a type of accordion that is popular as a folk instrument in Argentina and other Latin countries. “After studying in the classical style with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, Piazzolla developed a unique musical vocabulary,” says Mr. Rudiakov. The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires is an homage to Vivaldi, depicting the seasonal moods with shifts in themes and rhythm, containing elements of tango, classical, baroque and jazz.

Performing in the July 16 concert are Danwen Jiang and Joana Genova, violins; Ariel Rudiakov, viola; Andrew Kim and Ron Feldman, celli; Quentin Kim and David Deveau, pianists; and Jayne Rosenfeld, flute. Brandon Town Players Present ‘Sound of Music’

The Brandon Town Players will be presenting Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic musical “The Sound Of Music” at the Paramount Theatre, Center St. Rutland on July 16, 17, and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and on July 19, at 2 p.m. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Players in their support of the renovation of the Brandon Town Hall and the opportunity to present quality community theater to the surrounding area. Tickets are $23 for Orchestra/Loge and $21 for the balcony (plus applicable taxes and credit card charges).
