The dust has resettled on the parking lot and the last of the books are cleared away as the Mettawee Community School settles back into its summertime tranquility. The 42nd Annual Pawlet Public Library Book Sale is over. The books came from the generosity of silent givers who faithfully culled their literary treasures and slipped them into Edie’s barn. Behind the fun and excitement was a legion of volunteers who managed the sorting, transporting, set up, grooming and sale of thousands of books. Twenty area youths, led by Oxbow Mountain 4-H Shooting Sports Club, along with the “Pawlet Public Library Transport Fleet” moved and staged the books for display. The faces of generations were beaming with pride as silence descended in the Mettawee gym

at the end of a record 1-1/2 hour start to finish book move. Local sponsors and volunteers kindly gave their resources and time to promote the event, organize a super raffle, feed the crew and provide beverages for the crowd. Crescent Valley Homemakers organized a bake sale stocked by our community’s legendary bakers. Our thanks to the folks from Pawlet, North Pawlet and West Pawlet who showed up to support our local library. Those of you who drove the extra miles from bordering towns to help us out, we are grateful for your help. The dealers, visitors and residents who came to buy our books, we hope you had as good a time as we did. Our silent cohorts who wish to remain anonymous, we know who you are and we salute you. Rupert Old Home Days

Andrew J. George has graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) Leader’s Training Course at Fort Knox, Ky. The four-week course is a leadership internship for cadets that can lead to the ultimate goal of becoming an Army officer. College students experience and examine the Army without incurring an obligation to serve in the Army or ROTC, and are eligible to receive two-year college scholarship offers and attend the Advanced ROTC Course at their college. Cadets are observed and evaluated during classroom and field training exercises to determine their officer potential in leadership abilities and skills. The cadets are trained to have a sound understanding of traditional leadership values during the challenging, motivating “hands-on” training. The training develops well-disciplined, highly motivated, physically conditioned students, and helps improve the cadets’ self-confidence, initiative, leadership potential, decision making, and collective team cohesion. The cadets receive training in fundamental military skills, Army values, ethics, warrior ethos, rifle marksmanship, small arms tactics, weapons training, drill and ceremony, communications, combat water survival training, rappelling, land navigation, and squad-level operations field training. The cadet is a student at the University of New England, Biddeford, Maine. George is the son of Valerie and Phillip George of Highlawn Road, Brattleboro, Vt.

New Skete Monastery will offer its annual Open House and Pilgrimage on Saturday, August 8, from 8:30 to 6:30. Brothers Earn Honors

Justin Schwartz, BBA class of 2004, has recently graduated from Castleton State College. Justin received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, concentration in management. Mr. Schwartz is currently on active duty with the Vermont Air National Guard serving in Burlington, VT. Travis Schwartz, BBA Class of 2007, attending Keene State College, has attained a grade point average placing him on the Dean’s List for the spring semester. Travis is majoring in Business Administration, minor in economics, and will be entering his junior year at KSC in August. ________________________________________________

Haystack Hustler Seniors

The Haystack Hustler Seniors will meet at the home of Charlie and Phyllis Mason, 458 Maple Grove, Pawlet, at noon on August 11. Note this is a change of location due to a conflict. This will be a Pot Luck Picnic. Meat, Rolls and picnic supplies will be provided. We will have lawn games available and guarantee a fun time for all! Hildene Opens New Lincoln Exhibit

Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home announces the opening of its new Abraham Lincoln exhibit, “The American Ideal: Abraham Lincoln and the Second Inaugural” on Saturday, September 5. Set within the context of Lincoln’s Second Inaugural, which harkens back to the then radical beliefs first enunciated in the Declaration of Independence, visitors will learn how the Civil War and President Lincoln helped bring life and meaning to the promise of the American Ideal of equality, justice and opportunity for all. The exhibit thoughtfully uses text from the speech, considered to be one of the president’s greatest, and artifacts from the collections of Hildene and Brown University’s John Hay Library, one of the five great Lincoln collections. Among the artifacts included in the exhibit are; one of only three of Lincoln’s iconic stovepipe hats in existence, one of his bibles, a cast of the president’s hands, a life mask and a scrapbook that belonged to a supporting actress who appeared in the production of “Our American Cousin,” the play the President was watching on the evening of the assassination. The scrapbook contains a swatch of wallpaper from his Fords Theater box. Also in the exhibit is a playbill from this final performance. A bust of Thomas Jefferson, principal author of the Declaration of Independence, is on loan from the Jefferson Legacy Foundation. Cloggers Entertain at Equinox Terrace

The Wild Country Cloggers of Bennington, who have been perfecting their lively dance techniques for close to 20 years, performed for Terrace residents recently, bringing their own plywood floor for maximum effect. The high-energy group, which includes all ages, clogged to traditional mountain fiddle music and then proceeded through Elvis Presley tunes to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” as the audience clapped along.

Freedom Hawk Band To Play In Pawlet

One of the area’s most popular rock bands will play a benefit concert in Pawlet, VT, on Sunday, August 9, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., in Edie Mach’s Meadow, which borders the Pawlet Mill Pond at the junction of VT Routes 30 and 133. Adult admission will be $10, children from 5-12 will be $5, children under 5 admitted at no charge. Refreshments will be available and attendants should bring chairs or blankets. In the event of poor weather, the event will be held in the nearby Mettawee Community School gymnasium. Self-described as a Country Rock/Southern Rock band, Freedom Hawk’s appearance will benefit Pawlet’s new “Club 2011,” an informal group of Pawlet and West Pawlet residents who have begun planning for Pawlet’s 250th birthday in 2011. The group will also help fund the final renovations on the town’s Town Hall. Freedom Hawk’s musicians are John Freed, Rod Hawkins, Don Barrigar, Kenny Albright and Todd Meade. Strawberry Festival

The Chapel on the Green in West Arlington is hosting a Strawberry Festival on Sunday, August 9 from 2 to 6 p.m. Featured are homemade biscuits, vanilla ice cream with strawberries and real whipped cream, all for only $4.50 each. Also available is “The Works” which includes biscuits, berries, ice cream, more berries and whipped cream, all together for $6 each. Beverages are available for 50 cents. The berries were picked by members at local farms where they were at their peak, and fast frozen for use now. Chapel on the Green is located at the West Arlington Green Historic District just across the covered bridge off Route 313 West. should spend on 85-year-old Aunt Millie, who suffers from COPD, angina, is diabetic and needs a hip replacement. Is it worth the investment? Sounds heartless. But that’s where the discussion is going. Regarding the Living Will controversy...six weeks before my husband died, he was admitted to the hospital at 6:30 in the morning. Two friends, one a relative, met us at the emergency room. A counselor employed by the hospital advised us about a living will; my husband signed it and our two friends witnessed it. It was that simple. Didn’t cost us, Medicare or CHP supplemental a dime. Politicians are distorting facts and frightening Americans away from the good health care they deserve. Insurance and pharmaceutical companies have a deadly, tight grip on Washington. It’s time congress and the senate stand up for Americans. After all, we gave them their job; we pay their salary. If they don’t improve the health care system now, all of us will have to live with, or die from, the same old health care we’ve had for the past 70 years. It will continue to be survival of the wealthiest, because they can afford to be the fittest. I can assure you that I won’t lose any sleep over a millionaire crying because he has to pay a little more in taxes to help fund the president’s health care initiative. ...on the lighter side of this dark and cloudy summer... It seems that every time I see the sun is out, and I grab my glasses, New Yorker magazine, a drink and a towel; run out to the pool; put everything down on the table; and take my dip...the sun hides behind the clouds again! The only thing dry is my martini, and I’m left sitting dripping wet under cloudy skies!

The next Bennington County Association for Family and Community Education meeting will be held August 12, at the Community House, Route 7A, Arlington, VT, from 6 to 8 p.m. Jedan Black, president of BCFCE, was recently presented with the Heart of FCI Award at the state meeting by Rita Charlton, state president. Jean is also vice president for programs for VTFCE and has attended many national conferences throughout the United States, bringing back to Bennington County a wealth of knowledge. Beverly Hay recently was given a 50-year membership certificate and pin. Bev has been president of BCFCE as well as being very active on many committees and offices. These two ladies are grassroot members of Bennington County, State of Vermont, and National FCE. ________________________________________________

Scott and Helen Nearing Revisited

On August 9 starting at 3 p.m., another Community Potluck in the Nearing tradition will feature an afternoon of music, storytelling and meeting friends at the original Scott and Helen Nearing homestead. Greg Joly, Nearing archivist, and Rebecca Lepkoff, photographer, will be on hand to talk about the myths and the legacy of living the good life. Life in the valley, known as Pikes Falls, is portrayed in “Almost Utopia: the Residents and Radicals of Pikes Falls, 1950.” The Nearings brought people to Forest Farm to share their ideals and to teach others how to live a sustainable lifestyle. Though they had much to offer back to the land movement, their way of life was not without controversy. This event is for the community to share stories, music and good food. Ex-dentist inventor Glen Whitten advises us that he is applying for a patent in using the energy from the fluid flow around a vortex to create lift for airplanes, helicopters, windmills, etc. Whitten has also applied for patents in hybrid cars, trucks, generators and jet engines. Becky Kotler to Represent Vermont in Summer National Senior Games

Northshire Bookstore co-presents The Sushi Experience at The Perfect Wife

The National Senior Games will take place this year in Palo Alto, California from August 116. Becky Kotler, 70, a Manchester resident, will be the first woman participant to represent Vermont at the games, which are open to all qualifying athletes 50 years old and over. She will compete in the 1500 meter race on August 6, the 5K race on August 8, and the 10K race on August 9. She will be the only female from Vermont competing in each of the three races. Each state in the U.S. has a qualifying road race from which the first three winners are then qualified to participate in the National event. Fortunately for Becky, the 5K and 10K qualifier was held in Manchester, where she was the only runner in her age group. The 1500 meter qualifier was held in Burlington, where she was also a winner. In 2007 she competed in the Senior Games in Louisville, Kentucky, in the 5K and 10K. “There were 12,000 senior athletes there!” she said. “Just because people are aging, they don’t have to give up everything they love. A little competition spurs you on, and it’s fun to push yourself at this age. I’ve won a lot of races, but many times I’m the only one in my age group. Not a lot of seventyyear-olds are still running.” Asked what she enjoys about running, Becky said, “It’s not an effort, it’s just comfortable to feel my body in rhythm, especially when I’m competing, when it really kicks in. Besides, I love being outside.” Becky has been running since she was 45. Her husband, Len, encourages her, and for many years they ran together. “Behind a good woman athlete,” Becky says, “there is often a supportive husband.”

The Northshire Bookstore is happy to announce its third chef/cookbook event, “The Sushi Experience”, with Japanese chef Hiroku Shimbo on Thursday, August 6 at 6:30 p.m. The event is being co-sponsored by The Perfect Wife (restaurant) located on VT Rtes.11/30, outside of Manchester Center. Interfaith Council of the Northshire Sponsors S’More Education

Everyone loves s’mores, that wonderful treat of melted marshmallow on chocolate sandwiched between two graham crackers that makes you say, “ I want s’more!” How about s’more education? The Interfaith Council of the Northshire is sponsoring an adult education evening on Thursday, August 6th from 6-8 p.m., at the beautifully restored Calfee/ Davis Barn. The Calfee/Davis Farm barn off Route 30, in Rupert, VT (about a half-mile South of Sykes Hollow Road). You will see the sign for Faith and Nature Camp on the right hand side of the road at the beginning of the driveway. The Interfaith Council has been operating a day-camp called Faith and Nature Camp for elementary age children for the last seven years. At this camp, the youngsters have learned about environmental stewardship, the science of ecology, the love of the out-of-doors, framed by our community’s interfaith traditions. The youngsters have had such great experiences that we decided to enlarge the opportunities for environmental stewardship education to their parents and the wider adult community. Tom, who grew up in Manchester and graduated from BBA gained statewide recognition for his environmental activism as a student at Middlebury College receiving the Governor’s Service Award. Since college he has stayed deeply involved in environmentalism and currently owns Hand Energy Services. His topic will be, “How We Measure Environmental Progress”. Hiroko writes cookbooks and food articles for general circulation and professional magazines such as Saveur, National Culinary Review, Art of Eating and others. When she is not writing about cooking she offers professional cooking classes at vocational and avocational cooking schools throughout the United States and Europe. Additionally Shimbo has acted as a culinary consultant to the P. F. Chang’s China Bistro group providing menu development, recipes and staff training for their initial entry into the Japanese restaurant business and developed a new line of product imports for one of the largest Japanese food and restaurant equipment importers and distributors, Mutual Trading Company. Shimbo frequently appears on radio and television throughout the United States in her role as a proponent and authority on Japanese cuisine. She has been featured on the Food Network’s “Roker on the Road” series, several episodes of PBS television programs, PBS national radio and local radio and television stations across the country. Chicken Barbecue

The First Congregational Church’s Annual Chicken Barbecue will be held on Saturday, August 8, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the church. The menu will include barbecued chicken, local corn on the cob from Dutton’s Farm, potato salad, cole slaw, and brownies with local Wilcox ice cream. Iced tea and lemonade will also be served with the meal. The cost will be $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 years and under. This will be a special night out with a delicious meal served to you. The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company presents “The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!)”, a comic gem that turns the world of the musical on its head – lovingly providing both a parody of, and a homage to, the styles of five musical theatre giants. Written by Joanne Bogart and Eric Rockwell, the show features five mini-plays that treat the theme of a damsel in distress in the distinct musical styles of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Kander and Ebb — who together have produced much of the world’s finest musical theatre, including “Oklahoma!”, “Sweeney Todd”, “Hello, Dolly!”, “Phantom of the Opera” and “Cabaret”. During its successful off-Broadway run, the show was nominated for many awards and hailed by one critic as “the gift from the Theater Gods.” “Musicals” will appear at the Weston Rod & Gun Club, located on Route 100 1.5 miles north of Weston, from August 12 through September 6. The production’s top-notch cast includes four of Weston’s all-time favorite performers who, between them, have performed in most of the famous shows skewered by “The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!)”. David Bonanno and Susan Haefner, who first performed together in Weston’s “Carousel”; Roger Seyer, who debuted in Weston last summer as Jean Valjean in the hugely popular “Les Misérables”; Dorothy Stanley, who began her career in Weston during the 1970s (along with director Tim Fort), has since performed in 15 Broadway shows, including, most recently, “Gypsy” with Patti LuPone. The Lake St. Catherine Association Golf Outing

In August 2008 the Lake St. Catherine Association held its famous Golf Outing and it was its usual huge success.Twenty golfers were awarded over $800 in cash and gift certificates. Forty golfers and their spouses capped off the evening by having dinner at the club. At that time the field comprised 32 golfers in 8 foursomes. The format was a Captain and Crew mixed best ball 9 hole scramble. In the event of a tie, tie breakers are used when a team ties another team. We compare each team’s cards. The first team that has the best score on the most difficult handicapped holes is judged to be the winner. The date for this year’s Outing has been set for Saturday afternoon

Film at Pawlet Library

The Pawlet Public Library will show the film “Tea with Mussolini” August 11th, the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. Director Franco Zeffireli’s works are largely classic Shakespeare and Opera extravaganzas. When he filmed a story based on his childhood the images and music of his body of work added an unexpected richness. In 1935 a cultured life was still available at bargain prices in Florence. This attracted many widows and unattached women who could stretch their incomes while living a near idyllic life amidst Europe’s art treasures. One such small group of British and American ladies took a young Italian orphan under their wings, seeing to his care and education. As change was in the air and the women had a significant economic and political clout they arranged an interview with Benito Mussolini and extracted a promise of protection from him. The friends, who were known locally as “Il Scorpioni” for their sharp wit, were not so naive as to accept the fascist leader’s promise at face value. The story follows the efforts of the all star cast to protect their lifestyle and young charge from the coming upheaval. The film was released in 1999 with a 117 minute run time. The BAFTA selected it for the Best Supporting Actress award in 2000. The movie is rated PG will be shown with closed captions. Admission is free and punch and popcorn are available. Feel free to bring a cushion or your own folding chair.

As a former Delegate to Nicaragua in 2008, Community Delegate Kelly Moore has worked continuously on the 29 minute documentary which will help to promote the album inspired by his trip to Nicaragua titled “Silently Hoping.” Proceeds from album sales go to the Friends of the World Food Program and other local and regional organizations. During the seven-day trip to the mountains of Nicaragua, Moore witnessed first hand the vast poverty of this country and its contrasts in beauty. Wood’s Tea Company in Concert at Hildene

On Wednesday, August 12, the acclaimed American folk music group Wood’s Tea Company returns to the event tent at Hildene for the annual Robert D. Thum Memorial Concert. Hildene hosts this popular event every summer in honor of the late Robert Thum, an early trustee and long-time supporter of The Lincoln Family Home and its mission. The Vermont based acoustic group known for their rousing rendition of bluegrass, folk, Celtic and maritime tunes, as well as their energy and dry sense of humor between songs, has been playing crowd pleasing music for more than two decades. During a performance the crowd may see them employ as many as a dozen different instruments. From banjos, bezoukis and bodhrans to guitars and tin whistles, each musician contributes his or her special musical expertise on a variety of instruments. The group has performed at Lincoln Center and on NPR. Folk Music Quarterly says this about their style, “Side-stepping pretension and going for the grit, this New England band gives a lusty performance every time.” The Hildene event takes place rain or shine. Grounds open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 6 p.m. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnics. SPORTS Vermont Golf Association ‘State Day’ Slated for Champlain Country Club The Vermont Golf Association will hold a one-day State Day tournament at Champlain Country Club Tuesday, August 11. State Days formats are 18 holes, stroke play for low gross and net scores. The tournament is played in three flights determined by GHIN handicap (0-10, 11-16, and 17-36). Any amateur golfer with a current GHIN handicap (and GHIN card) is eligible to participate. A reserved tee time is required for the Champlain Country Club State Day event. Internist Joins SVMC

Dr. Joshua Sherman, who joined Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) on July 1 as a hospitalist, took an unusual path to become a physician. “My mother is a playwright and involved in the arts and my father is a physician,” stated Dr. Sherman. “I moved to New York City when I was 16 and was involved in many aspects of the arts. By 17, I was designing for Broadway. I worked on my first movie by the time I was 18.” Dr. Sherman entered an extensive volunteer medical rotation program at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City to help him along his new path. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York-Stony Brook School of Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Coming to Bennington and SVMC to practice was a clear choice for Dr. Sherman. “My family has been coming to southern Vermont for years,” he said. “My father attended RPI and Albany Medical School and my parents always loved this area. We have many close family friends here in Vermont. SVMC is a part of Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC). SVHC is a community-based, not-for-profit health system that exists solely for the benefit of the communities it serves. 4-H Works to Fill Science Gap

As the future becomes increasingly technology dependent and global science competition becomes ever more intense, the United States faces a potential shortage of scientists. Only 18 percent of U.S. high school seniors are proficient in science, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Only five percent of current US college graduates have earned science, engineering, or technology degrees, compared to 66 percent in Japan and 59 percent in China. Looking at these statistics, the national 4-H Youth Development Program is tapping the resources of the 106 land grant universities and colleges of the Cooperative Extension System. CREATURES Extension is piloting the 4-H Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) program to excite youth about science careers. Nationally and in Vermont, Extension programming has brought agricultural science, electricity, mechanics, entrepreneurship and natural sciences careers to young people’s attention. Today, 4-H out-ofschool opportunities also open the door to subjects like rocketry, robotics, global positioning, renewable energy and computer science with hands-on learning experiences. The goal of 4-H SET is to inspire one million young people nationally and 3,000 in Vermont on the path of excelling in science, engineering and technology by 2013. At its 2008 launch in Vermont, 4-Hers in Burlington, Vermont and at a statewide teen leadership meeting in Fairlee, Vermont took part in the first annual 4-H National Youth Science Day Experiment, using a disposable diaper, zip-lock bag, newspaper and tap water to learn about hydrogel technology and water conservation secrets. For this year’s 4-H National Youth Science Day experiment in October, 4-H has designed “Biofuel Blast,” a hands-on experiment to introduce young people all around the nation to biofuels. Youth will become scientists for the day, discovering how ordinary household products can create alternative energy, how that fuel can power many of the things used each day and participate in a national youth debate to discuss the “best” biofuel based on experiment outcomes. Young people will be able to see how their small creations are part of a major current nationwide discussion. Youth will also be engaged before, during and after the experiment via several popular communication mechanisms, including cell phone text messages, Facebook, Twitter, You Tube and through the 4-H.org. In 4-H, children learn leadership, citizenship and life skills through more than 1,000 projects with topics as varied as pets and farm animals, rocketry, digital mapping, computer game design, public speaking, photography, nutrition and community service. Norman’s Attic Community-Wide Craft Fair & Tag Sale

Arlington, Vermont is the place to be for those looking for unique items, gifts, crafts and collectibles. From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday August 8, more than 60 vendors from all over New England will line Route 7A in Arlington for this annual event. Woven items, pottery, art, jewelry, china, linens, antiques, dried flowers, homemade jams, knitwear and more will be available. The folks at St. James Church will also serve an assortment of home cooked food at their popular grill. This event has been held for 15 years at the home of beloved American artist Norman Rockwell and his family from 1939 to 1953. In addition to the town green and main street being lined with vendors, the town-wide tag sale includes over 20 locations, stretching from Sandgate to Sunderland, Vermont. Maps of all the tag sale locations are available during the event at the St. James Grill. PHS community picnic to celebrate Braintree School renovation

The Pawlett Historical Society will hold its 2nd annual Community Picnic on Sunday, August 16th at the Braintree School, located on Vermont Route 153 in West Pawlet. The picnic will celebrate the reopening of the one-room school after a major restoration project funded by a significant grant, $20,000, from the Preservation Trust of Vermont and the Freeman Foundation, as well as by monies previously fundraised locally by the Society. The Community Picnic is scheduled to begin at noon and will feature a Potluck lunch, with hot dogs and lemonade provided by the PHS. Members of the Pawlet and West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Departments will lend helping hands by grilling hot dogs. Attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair or blanket and an entrée, veggie, dessert, or other nibbles. Live music is planned. The day’s activities will be free. In case of rain, the WPVFD has kindly offered to provide a suitably sized tent. Following the picnic, the Pawlett Historical Society will present Greg

The day’s activities will also include raffle ticket sales and the raffle drawing itself for the Butternut Shaker Table made and generously donated to the PHS by local cabinetmaker and Society Trustee Gregg Gawlik. The drawing for the Shaker Table will be held following Colm’s program. The (short) Annual Meeting of the Pawlett Historical Society will begin directly after the drawing. Steve Williams, President of the PHS, said, “With the completion of the restoration of the Braintree School it is now much better protected against the elements and its environment for future years.” John McInerney, a PHS Trustee, said, “The restoration of the interior at Braintree gives the community a historic structure that now looks as did in 1852. The community may be justly proud of such a beautiful building able to host educational functions for years to come.” The PHS, with the help of Suzanne Jamele of Historic Preservation Consulting, has prepared and submitted an application to place the Braintree schoolhouse and outhouse on the National Register of Historic Places. A number of community people, including Pawlet Selectmen, town road crew, landowners and craftsmen made up the Pawlett Historical Society restoration team for this project. Art in the Park Summer Festival

ENTERTAINMENT World-Class String Quartet at MFF Sixth Concert

The Hyperion String Quartet, founded in 1999 at the Eastman School of Music, will perform works by Schubert, Shostakovich and Dvorak at the August 13th concert presented by the Manchester Music Festival. Described as “vivacious” by New York City’s WQXR classical radio station and “a single living breathing organism...bringing grand and glorious life to the music” by Classical Voice of North Carolina, the two violins, viola and cello combination has won numerous competition prizes. They have held residencies at Kent State University, the Hartt School of Music and San Diego State University in association with the La Jolla Music Society. Currently based in Saratoga Springs, New York, the quartet consists of Amanda Brin and Naho Tsutsui, violins, Yi-Ping Yang, viola and Jonathan Brin, cello. Following intermission, the Hyperion Quartet will play Antonin Dvorak’s ‘Quintet for strings in E Flat Major, Op 97 American’ with the addition of Ariel Rudiakov, MMF Artistic Director, on viola. Dorset Players to hold Auditions for ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’

The Dorset Players have announced the first production of their 82nd season will be “Arsenic and Old Lace,” American playwright Joseph Kesselring’s farcical dark comedy revolving around Mortimer Brewster, a theatre-hating drama critic, and his crazy family which includes two spinster aunts who have taken to poisoning lonely old men with glasses of homemade elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine, and “just a pinch” of cyanide and then burying them in the cellar. Mortimer also has two insane brothers, one who believes he’s the late great President Roosevelt and another, a murderer who goes to great lengths to conceal his true identity. Director Dom Degnon will be looking for eleven men and three women for his cast, age 20 and up (way up). Auditions will be held at the Dorset Church on Church Street in Dorset, Vermont, at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, August 18, and Wednesday, August 19. It is not necessary to attend both sessions.
