OUR READERS’ LETTERS ...runners gathered...

On Saturday September 12, under cloudy skies and the threat of rain showers looming, some 600 runners gathered at the starting line in anticipation of the sound of the starting gun, kicking off the 2009 Perfect Wife and Spiral Press Cafe Maple Leaf Half Marathon and 5K Run. In spite of the gloomy skies, hundreds of runners, volunteers, spectators, friends and families of the runners brightened the atmosphere at the Dana Thompson Memorial Park. Runners came from near and far. In addition to runners from all the New England states, New York and New Jersey, there were runners from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado, Iowa, Washington, Oregon, California and as far away as the Virgin Islands, and New Zealand. Without the multitude of volunteers, the Maple Leaf Half Marathon and 5K Run could not have taken place in such an efficient and safe manner. So again, I would like to give a hearty thank you to all our volunteers. A job well done. Unfortunately, there is a sad note to add. Jay Hathaway, an integral member of the Maple Leaf Committee, who spent the entire morning identifying

and announcing the arrival of runners crossing the finish line, and enjoying every minute of it, passed away later that day. He put in many hours in helping to make the 2009 version of the Maple Leaf Half Marathon successful. He will be greatly missed. Our sympathies go out to Terri, his family and all that knew and loved him. Proceeds from this event will go toward enabling the Manchester Lions Club to help non-profit organizations and those in need in our Northshire community. — Len Kotler Manchester Lions Club

Second Chance Animal Center wishes to extend its thanks to the Vermont News Guide for helping to promote the shelter’s 50 year anniversary celebration. Over 200 people and their pets, many of whom were adopted from Second Chance, attended the celebration which was held on Sunday, September 13. The day could not have been more beautiful, and it was a wonderful time to renew old friendships and make new ones.

This is a plea to all local organizations seeking to attract an audience to a public event. Manchester is very fortunate in having many enjoyable events, particularly in our busy summer, but regrettably from time to time events of a similar nature clash. A current example is SVAC’s Johnny Cash Experience and the Mark Skinner Library’s Blue Jean Ball at Hildene — both of which are scheduled to take place on the evening of Friday, October 9. Both events will be very well worth attending and doubtless many people will be torn in choosing which one to attend. Events such as these often take months of hard effort to plan and arrange. In order to avoid potential clashes, the best central place to check before selecting a date is the interactive events calendar at www.manchestervermont.net run by the Manchester and the Mountains Chamber of Commerce. (Letters, cont.) On August 7, which would have been our 55th wedding anniversary, we headed home. We stopped at Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream stand in Manchester Square. When we were on the road again, I noticed my watch was gone. Once I was home again I looked up the Ben & Jerry’s phone number and called to see if anyone had turned in a watch. No one had, so I left my name and telephone number. Last week a gentleman called me from Ben & Jerry’s and asked me if I was Alice Scott and had I lost a watch. I was dumbfounded. I asked him if he needed my credit card to pay for the expense of sending it to me. He said, “No, just take my name and number and call me when you receive it.” Well it came two days ago in perfect condition. My husband picked out that watch for me and it was of very sentimental value to me. I would like to thank the nice person who turned the watch in as well as the nice gentleman who took his time to send it to me. I called him and left a message but have not yet heard from him. Air Force Airman 1st Class Patrick J. Thompson II graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Thompson earned distinction as an honor graduate. He is the son of Kathie Thompson of Bentley Lane, Arlington, Vermont. The airman graduated in 2006 from Arlington High School, and received an associate degree in September 23, 2009

2008 from Vermont Technical College, Randolph, Vermont. Army Reserve Spec. Eric M. Cleverly has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Oklahoma. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksman-

ship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics. Cleverly graduated in 2001 from Brattleboro Union High School, Brattleboro, Vermont, and received a bachelor’s degree in 2005 from Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston, Massachusetts. Army Reserve Sgt. Thomas A. Reale has returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a

forward operating base overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Operation Iraqi Freedom is the official name given to military operations involving members of the U.S. armed forces and coalition forces participating in efforts to free and secure Iraq. The sergeant graduated in the year 2000 from Ticonderoga High School, and received a bachelor’s degree in 2004 from Resselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York.

Batten Kill River Duck Run

The fall racing season is upon us and what better way to kick it off than with the second Annual Batten Kill River Duck Run, sponsored by the Bank of Bennington and supported by the Batten Kill Valley Runners, on Sunday, September 27 in West Arlington. The Batten Kill River Duck Run benefits the Arlington Area Childcare/Happy Days Playschool. The festivities start with a 1K fun run for the kids at 8:30 a.m., and then a 5k run/walk and a 12K run/walk at 9:00 a.m. The races take place on River Road in West Arlington beginning and ending at the covered bridge. The entire route is run on a low traffic dirt road along the Batten Kill River and offers some spectacular scenery as fall foliage approaches its peak. Some say this is the best time of year for Vermont running. Registration the morning of the race on September 27 begins at 7:30 a.m. and is $18 for the 5K and 12K and $3 for the fun run, (free for Happy Days students). Age group awards will be given for the top 3 in each age group from 12 and under to 80 and over. Each participant in the kids 1K fun run will receive an award. Afghanistan — Can We Win?

Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning presents a lecture entitled “Afghanistan — Can We Win?” with Derek Boothby, former director in the Department of Political Affairs at the United Nations. The Summer Lunch Program was Successful!

The Arlington/Sandgate/ Sunderland Summer Lunch Program was very successful thanks to members of the communities who volunteered and business owners and distributors who donated goods to fulfill the needs of the program. The program came to fruition for the first time this year with initial groundwork put together by Reverend Kathy Clark, Pastor of the Federated Church of East Arlington and Rev. Scott Neal, Rector of St. James Episcopal Church. Reverends Clark’s and Neal’s vision brought together volunteers from area schools, businesses and food pantry representatives to create and successfully fulfill a goal of feeding lunches to eligible children in families in the three communities. The initiatives began in midFebruary 2009 to plan how to get the word out about the program, how to raise money to fulfill the needs of the program and how to successfully supply the labor to make sure the program ran smoothly. Mr. Jack Gunther, Arlington Food Shelf Coordinator graciously provided knowledge and guidance on the how’s and how to’s of running a food program and local civic groups and churches in the area hosted fundraisers. Sunderland and Arlington schools got the information out to families who could benefit from the program with Arlington’s Fisher School hosting a weekly pick-up point for families. The program offered weekly bags of groceries filled with lunch supplies for each week from June 23 through August 18. Volunteers shopped for food, packed weekly bags of balanced nutritious food items, made phone calls, distributed weekly supplies, and gen(Continued on page 12) September 23, 2009

Londonderry Rescue Needs Used/Junk Cars for “Jaws of Life” Training

Now that the “cash for clunkers” program is history, you might still be able to get rid of your old car and contribute to a good cause by donating your used car and helping local rescuers train to use extrication tools, including the “jaws of life.” The Londonderry Volunteer Rescue Squad (LVRS) is looking for four to five used vehicles for an intensive two-day vehicle extrication training session that will be held October 24-25, 2009, in Londonderry. Cars do not need to run, but later models are preferred so that rescuers can practice on technologically up-to-date vehicles and the latest safety products (airbags) and materials. LVRS’s Rescue Department is called to use its heavy-duty rescue truck and extrication tools about a dozen times a year. Real-time and real-life scenario-based training is vital to keeping rescuers’ skills up to date and ready to respond to incidents. This advanced training session will be coordinated by Emergency Training Solutions of Harwinton, Connecticut, and LVRS is sponsoring the exercise in part thanks to a grant from the Thrifty Attic. The Zion Preschool, led by Head Teacher and Director Kathy Penge and assisted by Pam Cairns, has just begun its 49th year of providing a preschool experience to some of the youngest members of our Northshire community. Under the continued leadership of these two professionals, the Preschool provides a wonderful, child-centered, developmentally appropriate program in both their three year old and four year old classes. Kathy and Pam work to nurture children’s curiosity, creativity, and personal social/emotional growth through a diversified daily routine that incorporates a balance of children’s choice and teacher directed activities. Columbus Day Weekend and Harvestfest Celebration

The 2009 Stratton Columbus Day and Harvestfest Celebration will take place on October 10-11, highlighted by the North Face Run to the Summit, Mountain Chili Cook-Off and the quintessential New England Oktoberfest. As expected, the celebration will be village-wide, with live music, face painters, pumpkin decorating, rock climbing and activities for all ages. Saturday’s highlights include local chefs and restaurateurs vying for top honors in the cook-off while bartenders pour regionally brewed favorites at the base of the mountain. Kristin Matuscik and Nadine Van Houten, a tandem awarded top honors in 2008 for their “Black Eyed Nellie’s Wild Duck Chili”, hope to defend their titles in both the “Best Tasting” and “Most Original Recipe” categories. Sunday’s showcase is the North Face Run to the Summit and Family Fun Run, and not only does it test the endurance and physical ability of participants, but the event also raises money for local charities. New Teacher Training Program Coming to Southern Vermont Informational Meeting at Long Trail School

The highly successful TAP (Teachers Apprenticeship Program) is expanding to southern Vermont with classes starting in January 2010. Through a partnership with Dorset’s Long Trail School, TAP will be providing their proven teacher preparation to all qualified candidates. Classes will be held at Long Trail School and student teaching experiences will be conducted at local schools in southern Vermont. An informational meeting is scheduled at 1045 Kirby Hollow Road, Long Trail School on Thursday, October 1 at 6:30 p.m. TAP is designed to prepare individuals for successful licensure through Vermont’s Alternative Licensing Program known as Peer Review. The program’s length is only 6 months. Individuals who are selected to participate in TAP will be provided with: • A supervised, intensive student teaching internship in southern Vermont. • Individualized, on-going portfolio development consultations. • A full-semester apprenticeship with a master teacher. • Classes and related training on various aspects of work in schools such as legal issues, methodologies, assessment, child psychology, policies and procedures designed to improve pedagogic skills. • Thorough, on-going preparation and support for the Peer Review process. Song and Film at Equinox Terrace

The Satin Dolls — Marcia Holland, Connie Ferguson, and Linda Rollyson — visited the Terrace recently to perform in their signature close-harmony style. Old favorites like “Downtown,” “Lollipop,” and “Shake, Rattle, & Roll” were sung a cappella and pitch perfect. Their final number was “Happy Birthday,” sung to Terrace resident Mary Holland, Marcia’s mother, who then posed for photos with the group. Several days earlier, residents �� were treated to a very special �� movie, “The Terrace,” filmed �� at Equinox Terrace by Kacey �� Klonsky, a student at the Tisch �� School of the Arts, New York University. In only 3 days last �� March, Kacey and her crew transformed the Terrace into a Christmas setting for the gen�� tle love story of two “residents,” �� played by Sam and Barbara �� Lloyd. Real residents served as �� extras and enjoyed seeing themselves for the first time in this unique film. ��

‘Harvest Moon Under the Stars’ Dinner Plans Announced

Reservations for the “Harvest Moons Under the Stars” Dinner Dance are still being accepted. The Hoosick Falls Health Center Foundation and Mentorworks, Hoosick’s mentoring program, are teaming up to present this fabulous celebration of the area’s bountiful harvest as part of the first Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza, a family-friendly, community festival set for the last weekend of September. Guests at the September 26 event will be amazed by the transformation of the ReynoldsGilchrest Rink at the Town Athletic Fields into an elegant “outdoor” venue with crisp white linens awash in the glow of starlight and the fiery orange harvest moon. The gourmet dinner, expertly created by Classe Catering of Clifton Park will feature foods available within a 100-mile radius of Hoosick Falls. Dinner selections served family-style will include Apple Cranberry Chicken Roulade, Herb Encrusted Loin of Pork, Pumpkin Ravioli in Nutmeg Cream Sauce, and Portobello Mushrooms with Roasted Vegetables, accompanied by salt potatoes and a medley of roasted local vegetables. A wide array of stationary and passed hors d’oeuvres will be passed during cocktail hour, highlighting more of the flavors of the harvest, and dessert featuring fresh baked pies and fruit-filled crepes will be offered. Several courses will be with a chef-selected wine, and a wine, beer and soda bar will be available, featuring beer donated by Brown’s Brewery. Music for dancing will be provided by “Mixed Company” until 11 p.m. This six-piece dance band will have everyone on their feet and dancing to popular tunes from the 1950s to today. Artist Caryn King to Exhibit at Dorset Library

Artist Caryn King is presenting her work in a solo show at the Dorset Public Library during September. King is a narrative painter who began her artistic career with clay. After 14 years of making her living as a sculptor, intermingled with a few years earning her BFA in Illustration and stints as a toy designer and an art teacher, King came home to painting. “I always said I would paint someday if I could figure out what to put on the blank canvas,” she explained. “Then I hit on it, and I have been painting non-stop ever since. I do this full time, seven days a week, and I love it.” Caryn King raised her children in the Boston area, moved to Martha’s Vineyard, and now lives on a mountain in Vermont. “I love being part

of such a strong and welcoming community. I find it amazing that the essence of original country life remains in Vermont, given the amount of building and expansion that has taken place. Many of my paintings celebrate the beauty of country life and its (animal) occupants.” As you would expect from a former clay artist, texture is very important to King’s paintings. This feature is one of the things that allows her animal paintings to become intensely expressive without becoming sentimental. “I love the process of painting, the textures and effects the paint creates,” says King. “Sometimes the drag of the brush and the layers of paint that show through are my primary goals.” The paintings also emphasize a tactile appreciation of the animals themselves. “I love the beauty of the animals — their texture and their fur,” King says. She believes the animals she paints reflect a peace that sometimes seems so elusive to humans. Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Department to Host Annual Ham Supper

The Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Department(SVFD) will be hosting its annual ham supper on October 3 at the Shrewsbury Town Hall. The buffet supper has continuous seating that starts at 4:30 p.m. The cost is $9 for adults, $4 for kids aged 5-12 and kids under 5 eat free. The SVFD, along with the dedicated Shrewsbury Auxiliary, will be serving up a delectable dinner consisting of Wallingford Locker ham, zesty potato salad and cole slaw, apple sauce and fresh baked rolls. The dinner will be topped off with scrumptious homemade desserts donated by members of the community. Community Day at LTS

Long Trail School is excited to host a Community Festival on Saturday, September 26 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in conjunction with the annual Middle School Soccer Fall Classic. Hosted by the LTS Class of 2010, this event will feature a variety of games and entertainment. Coordination of this year’s efforts was initiated by Dean Sherman ‘10 with help from his mother Patti Alexander. Alexander commented that she has “encouraged Dean to give back to his community’. ‘It’s really about instilling the importance of volunteering in our children.” She added, “It’s a paycheck of the heart and can be very rewarding.” Many people are committed to making the day successful. The Parents Association will be selling baked goods, lunch and beverages. Under the Big Top, there will be acts like the LTS teen band Marmalade Man, “Bubbles the Clown’s” silly magic trick show and “Sing Like a Star Karaoke”. Join the fun with games like “Shoot the Hoop” and “Pie in the Face” with LTS Dean Peter Ahlfeld. Craft activities will include SpinArt and Make Your Own Tie-Dye t-shirts, plus a variety of craft vendors will offer their work for sale. Homegrown and Handmade

“The Fiddler” Dick Solberg was studying classical piano and violin until he began hearing old-timey, bluegrass, Celtic and Cajun fiddling and soon began fiddling on the streets and in the clubs of college towns 30 years ago. Since then he’s performed across America, in the Caribbean, Scotland, China, and Egypt. Solberg will perform at Pawlet’s “Homegrown and Handmade” Festival on Sunday, September 27. Celebrating the beauty and bounty of its surroundings, Pawlet’s first annual “Homegrown and Homemade” Festival is set for Sunday, September 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the meadow on the millpond in Pawlet, at the junction of VT Routes 30 and 133. The Festival combines a country fair marketplace from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with special entertainment and activities from noon to 2 p.m., when the day’s festivities will be highlighted by a performance by “The Fiddler” Dick Solberg. Festival admission is free to all. Tickets to Dick Solberg’s concert go on sale at noon, $10 for adults, children 12 or under, free. Over two dozen area growers, crafts persons and artists will display their handmade pottery, jewelry, clay paperweights; homegrown vegetables, pickles, jams, salsa, cheese, homebaked goods and grass fed beef; hand-knitted wool products, crocheted and hand-sewn items, and items made of vintage fabrics; watercolor cards and prints, photography, folk art and more. Trained in classical piano and violin, Solberg changed his musical direction 30 years ago when he encountered old-timey, bluegrass, Celtic and Cajun “fiddling” and began fiddling on the streets in places like Ann Arbor, Michigan; Provincetown, Cape Cod; and Coconut Grove, Florida. Since then he’s performed across America, in the Caribbean, at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, on the Great Wall of China, and the American University in Cairo. With four LPs, five CDs and a DVD on the way, Solberg lives in an old wooden Grange Hall in central New York State. He is currently

Maple Sugaring Author to Speak in Wallingford

Maple syrup and maple sugar are richly connected to the history of Vermont. In fact, it’s our State’s signature product. Although the all too familiar sap buckets and horse drawn sleds have disappeared, the maple industry is very much alive and well in Vermont. The Wallingford Historical Society is proud to announce that the noted author Betty Ann Lockhart will speak about sugaring in Vermont at our next meeting. Come along for a trip through maple time in Vermont, from the 1600s to the mid-twentieth century and hear about the industry and the culture of maple sugar. Betty Ann is the author of the book “Maple Sugarin’ in Vermont: A Sweet History”. Her book was the result of delving into records of the Agency of Agriculture and private materials. Photographs by Don Lockhart illustrate the book, along with images from the University of Vermont archives. At the presentation, she will share some fascinating stories from her book, including tales personally related by Wallingford sugarmaker Truman Young and Wells sugarmaker Wilson (Bill) Clark. Antique tools of the industry also have stories to tell, and some will be available for people to see after the presentation. Through their video production company Perspectives Inc., Betty Ann and Don have produced three video presentations about Vermont maple. Betty Ann and her husband are members of a number of maple organizations, including Rutland County Maple Producers. Paintings on Exhibit at South Londonderry Library

Currently on view in the Janeway Wing of the library are exquisite small oil paintings by Windham artist Nancy Tips. The paintings in the exhibit reflect Nancy’s longstanding connection to the Philadelphia school of contemporary realism whose traditions, techniques and vision provide the grounding for her work. Nancy’s paintings are the result of her love for the flowers and fruits of her Windham garden. Painting entirely from nature and in natural light, she uses direct brushwork and improvisational techniques of “alla prima” painting to create forthright images of the mysteries of light and shadow. Nancy has exhibited widely in New England and her paintings are in collections throughout the United States. She is represented by the Elaine Beckwith Gallery in Jamaica, Vermont and is a frequent contributor to exhibits at the Southern Vermont Art Center in Manchester. Her recent floral paintings will be on view during October at the Shelburne Farms 22nd Annual Art Exhibition in Shelburne, Vermont. Nancy Tips’ exhibit at the South Londonderry Free Library will be shown through October during library hours. Nancy has generously offered to donate half of the profits of her sales to the library and each beautifully done painting is modestly priced. Master Ceramist Regis Brodie Speaks at SVAC, October 4

Master Ceramist, Professor of Art at Skidmore College and featured artist in the Southern Vermont Arts Center’s 53rd National Fall Open Exhibition, Regis Brodie, will be on hand in SVAC’s Arkell Pavilion on Sunday, October 4, from 4-5 p.m. for a free visual presentation and ceramics demonstration. A reception with the artist, featuring free hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar ($3 cocktails, $2 wine) follows, from 5-6 p.m., in Yester House Gallery, where Brodie’s pieces are on display. Regis Brodie received his BS and Masters in Art Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and his MFA from the Tyler School of Art of Temple University. In addition to teaching courses in ceramics and managing Skidmore’s state-of-the-art Ceramics Studio, he exhibits work both nationally and internationally. Alpaca Farm Celebrates National Alpaca Farm Day

Arlington Fire Company Car Show

Judaica Artist Emmett Leader’s Work on Exhibit In Celebration of the Centennial of the Bennington Jewish Community

Now through November 8, the Bennington Museum will host “Revisiting Traditions — Illuminating Our Times: Works by Emmett Leader” in celebration of the Centennial of the Jewish Community in Bennington. In this show, Leader uses a visual language inspired primarily by the wall paintings of wooden synagogues and Jewish gravestone carvings, and ritual objects found in nineteenth century Eastern Europe. His work incorporates wood, clay, photographs, text, historic and found objects that speak to the narrative of both loss and vitality. Leader’s use of an ancient Mediterranean method of glazing called terrasigillata, his engraving of biblical quotes in Hebrew text, and his signature colors make his work recognizable. “In making my work, I tap into the power of this visual communication to engage and convey universal stories.” says Leader. Writing of his inspiration, Leader states, “Countless photographs depicting a cluster of purposeful, if not elegant buildings gathered around a tree-lined village common would serve us well as we begin to tell the story of the settlement of most small Vermont towns. Looking closer one would see that all of these towns were graced with at least one church steeple. The exception by far was when there was also a Synagogue. This exhibit is the story about the community of one such Synagogue that is celebrating its centennial. Part of the story began when the Jewish Community in Bennington was first organized in 1909, and in 1923 built its first house of prayer, naming itself Congregation Beth El. Another part of the story began earlier. Among the townspeople of Bennington in 1909 were my grandparents, Rabbi Isaac and Freda Leader, recent immigrants from Russia. “Revisiting Traditions — Illuminating Our Times: Works by Emmett Leader” revisits the world they left behind

in Eastern Europe, and the life they made in Bennington, Vermont. It illuminates a universal story of adaptation - leaving a cohesive cultural and religious community, and moving to a world where they were a religious minority - and the challenges this life brought to maintaining their religious practices and identity. This history, though at times painful and at times joyful, ultimately brings us to this time and place to celebrate this enduring Jewish Community.” A resident of Northampton, Massachusetts, Leader is a nationally recognized creator of Judaica sculptures. Working for almost two decades in this medium, he has helped to bring it from relative obscurity to greater public attention. Showcased in many juried and national shows, Leader’s work has been featured at the prestigious SOFA (Sculpture Objects and Functional Art) Expo in New York. Leader’s parents were both born and raised in Bennington, and Leader himself was born in Andover, Vermont where he often felt ostracized by the community due his Jewish family being the only one in the town. Although his parents were very interested in farming and agriculture, similar to many of their neighbors, they were considered eccentric within the community. His family eventually moved to Northampton, but continued to travel to Vermont for vacations and weekends. At seventeen, Leader independently moved back to Vermont where he completed high school. A graduate from Bennington College, Leader earned a degree in ceramics and sculpture and then became studio manager of Greenwich House Pottery in New York City. His spiritual quest took him to Israel in 1981, where he worked in a carpentry shop on Kibbutz Yagur. Eventually, Leader came across photographs of synagogues and gravestones in Eastern European shtetls. Recognizing this as the world his grandparents left behind, Leader’s personal identity and belonging were profoundly discovered in these photos. The beginning of Leader’s Judaica artistry was found. “Revisiting Traditions Illuminating Our Times: Works by Emmett Leader” is supported in part by a grant from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and private donors. Southern Vermont Mountain Fusion U14 Girls Select Travel Team, playing under the direction of Coach Andrea Lee, finished 2nd in the Berkshire Kickoff Classic played in Pittsfield, Mass., during Labor Day weekend, September 5 and 6. The Fusion U14 Girls Select Travel Team played four games against top teams from Western Mass. The team played very good team soccer and showed great sportsmanship. This team is made up of girls from the towns of: Bennington, Bondville, Chittenden, Danby, Dorset, Leicester, Manchester, Rupert, Rutland, South Londonderry, and Tinmouth/Wallingford. The team traveled down to Madison, Conn., for the Madison TWIST Tournament, September 19 and 20, to play against top teams from that area.

SPORTS Youth Marathon Held

The Batten Kill Valley Running Club hosted its annual Youth Marathon on Sunday, September 13 at the Dana Thompson Recreation Center in Manchester. Eight local children ages 5 through 12 participated in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s program by running one mile on 25 different days over the summer. On September 13 they raced the final 1.2 miles, accumulating a marathon distance of 26.2 miles. Each child received a tshirt, race medal, and refreshments to celebrate their accomplishments. UCS Fall Wellness Workshops

United Counseling Service is offering an exceptional opportunity for community members to learn skills that increase personal effectiveness and enhance relationships. The Fall 2009 Wellness Workshops at Northshire UCS address a range of topics that can help anyone unleash their full potential. Button-Up Peru Campaign

In a joint venture with Efficiency Vermont, the Peru Energy Committee will sponsor a potluck dinner/workshop at Peru Town Hall from 6 to 9 p.m., on Thursday, October 8. The Button-Up Campaign is a neighbor-to-neighbor effort to upgrade the energy efficiency of every home in the area and reduce our dependence upon fossil fuels. Thomas Hand of Hand Energy Services will attend the workshop to explain the energy auditing procedure. If you would like to join as an energy analyst, you can sign up at this workshop. The Conﬂuence

On Sunday September 27, explore the confluence of the Battenkill and Hudson River in a canoe or kayak along with Kelly Nolan, Battenkill Conservancy River Watch Coordinator. This will be the last 2009 summer adventure trip guided by Kelly. Meet at 9 a.m., at Battenkill Valley Outdoors, 1414 Route 313, Cambridge, NY (518-677-3311). The trip will begin on the Hudson River near Schuylerville, paddle north to the Battenkill, and continue up the river for approximately a mile, to near the Clark Mills dam. Pets of the Week

Kinsey is a 1-year-old female Terrier mix who came to SCAC from Georgia. She was bound for Connecticut, but the transport experienced a no show with the pick-up. Luckily, friends of SCAC made arrangements for her to come to Shaftsbury. Kinsey is super excitable, eager, friendly and playful. She is a great girl that will need training. Kinsey may need some work house-breaking, since it is hard to determine such things in the kennel environment, but she is very clean inside. Basic obedience, socialization, toy guarding, and food guarding training will be necessary. We recommend a dog-experienced home with children 15 years and older. Other dogs are possible upon introduction. If you are looking for a playful partner then come and meet our distinctive Kinsey! Waylon is a 6-year-old who was abandoned at the shelter with 5 other cats. He is a calm cat who is especially responsive. Waylon would make a great buddy because he likes attention and is very welcoming. Come see our calm guy. First developed in North America, long before the bow and arrow, the atlatl is a sling-like throwing system for darts or spears. Wells Church to Bless Animals

The people of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Wells, Vermont, will gather on the church grounds on Sunday, October 4th, at 4:00 pm for the blessing of animals in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. Francis is beloved by millions of people throughout the world as an example of one who loved all of creation. The blessing of animals has been a tradition at this local church for a number of years. Its members invite all in the community to join them for the ceremony. Animals of all sizes and conditions are welcome. Bring a photograph of those pets that do not travel easily. The Washington County Historical Society will host a History Fair on October 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Historic Salem Courthouse in Salem, New York. The Southern Vermont Arts Center’s 53rd National Fall Open Exhibition opens in Yester House Gallery on Saturday, September 26. Rett Sturman, Orah Moore, Regis Brodie and Gloria Vanderbilt are the featured artists in this exhibition, which boasts approximately 200 pieces submitted by artists from all across America, and juried in by guest juror David Miller, artist and Professor of Art Emeritus, Skidmore College. The day begins at 3 p.m., with the latest incarnation of SVAC’s Conversations with Artists series, featuring Inez McDermott, Associate Professor of Art History at New England College of Art, along with featured artists Orah Moore, Regis Brodie and Gloria Vanderbilt.

Jay A. Clarke will unpack the myth of artist Edvard Munch’s mental instability during a free lecture on Sunday, September 27, at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. “Questioning Munch’s Madness” is free and held at 3 p.m. The art of Edvard Munch has become so intertwined with concepts of personal anxiety and torment-as embodied in his iconic “The Scream”, that his less sensational imagery remains relatively unknown. Clarke, the Manton Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Clark, will consider how history has shaped fascination with the artist’s representations of devouring women and dying family members. She’ll also discuss how history has excluded Munch’s celebratory works such as his paintings and prints of male bathers and Norwegian landscapes created around 1900. Clarke was previously associate curator of prints and drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago. While at the AIC she curated “Becoming Edvard Munch”, hailed by The New York Times as “a thrilling exhibition” and by the Chicago Tribune as “among the institute’s finest of the last 30 years.” The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Mass. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (open Mondays in July and August). GMC Presents Annual Fall Foliage Concert

Winhall Library Gets a Facelift and Wi-Fi

For the past several months there has been a great deal of activity in the Winhall Memorial Library as members of the Board of Trustees moved, removed and realigned the collection inside the building. The Children’s Room has been relocated and is now a bright and cheerful place for children and their parents to browse among the many new books in the collection. The main collection has been reorganized so that different subject areas are now more easily reached, and the weeding has allowed for the purchase of many new books in different subject areas. There is now room for several computers to utilize our Wi-Fi, in addition to the new computer which is available to community members for their use. A few of the many new novels available are: “Help” by K.
