General Contractor; Smoke, Fire and Water Damage Division Eric Taylor moves forward with business his father began

By Mary Ann White The holidays are over, and our economy is still slow. We have seen new businesses come into the area, some old ones go out, and others diversify to stay in business. I slacked a little during the holidays on my spotlights, but plan on getting back into them focusing not only on new businesses or ones changing hands, but on ones who have been able to keep going though these tough times and what they have had to do to accomplish this. This week’s spotlight takes me to South Street in Hinsdale. George Taylor started Restorations Inc. back in 1970 and from 1970 to 1980 the business was primarily smoke, fire, and water damage repair and reconstruction. In the 1980’s son Eric came on board taking over as vice president in 1990 and officially became president in 2000. During this time Eric said they fell away from residential and went more to commercial projects such as condos at Oak ‘n Spruce, various stores at the Berkshire Mall (J.C.

Recent undertakings have been AzureGreen’s distribution facility in Middlefield, the staff housing project for Camp Becket, the expansion of the Division of Transitional Assistance on North Street, and BMC’s Onsite Imaging reception area. Eric said that the AzureGreen warehouse is expected to be completed by June and the administrative offices in October. Eric said they are fortunate to have work in this economy, and are now working on areas where they want to grow that being residential, particularly the smoke, fire, and water damage. John Lunt is Service Manager for this division of Restorations Inc. He was a former employee who moved on to become the building inspector for the City of Pittsfield and has now returned to help reestablish this division. Eric said that they have recently invested $50,000 into getting specialized equipment for what he said has become a pretty high-tech and systematic indus-

Captain-in-Charge Wynn goes from Bars to Stars PITTSFIELD – Mayor James M. Ruberto announced today that Captain-in-Charge Michael J. Wynn has been appointed the Acting Chief of the Pittsfield Police Department starting immediately. “For the past thirteen months Chief Wynn has been a great asset and face to the Pittsfield Police Department,” said Mayor Ruberto. “…and I will continue to show my support of Chief Wynn everyday.” Last month Captain-in-Charge Wynn was signing copies of his book, Rising Through the

Shefﬁeld Historical Society Seeks Exhibit Proposals The Sheffield Historical Society is currently accepting exhibit proposals for its 2009-2010-exhibition season in the Gallery at the Old Stone Store. The Society is also seeking a postal history scholar or someone who has the time or interest to devote to researching correspondence--possibly expanded to include diaries and journals--in our archives. The end product of your efforts and discoveries would be an exhibit on the postal history of Berkshire County. This is an excellent opportunity for area artists and artisans looking to gain local exposure or expand their artist resume; for a collector to gain notoriety by showcasing his or her collection to the community; or for an historian or student of history or museum studies to participate in the research

and curation of an exhibit. Recent past exhibits have included: Sheffield: Through the Lens of Carrie Smith Lorraine (1868-1935); American Antique Wicker; Fire & Light in the American Home, 16601880; A Serious Look at the Funnies: A History of the Comic strip; Red, White & Blue: Patriotic Motifs in American Folk Art; Paper Sculptures & Other Works by Seymour “Rob” Robins; and others. The only requisite is that the subject of the exhibit should in some way agree with the Society’s mission, which seeks to promote a wider understanding of the people and events that preceded us in this area, and to preserve and transmit that heritage to current and future generations. Hot chocolate, marshmallow toasting, the opportunity to build a snow animal in the Field Farm sculpture garden, and a chance to try out the new self-guided “Shapes in Landscapes Quest.” Starting at 1 p.m., there is a free guided walk with naturalist Rene Wendell, introducing wildlife tracks and signs.
