RJ quest to be “a leader in quality & craftsmanship” By Mary Ann White

In speaking with Roger J. Peltier, Jr. (RJ) of Pioneer Plumbing & Heating of Washington I found myself totally in awe of his knowledge and drive to be the best of the best in his field. He informed me that he has been known as RJ since his childhood and it just stuck with him. His working career began at the Becket General Store where he worked a few hours a week during Junior High. He also took on part-time work for Ed Bond, a local contractor, who hired him as a gopher and to do clean up. Soon after that he started working vacations and summers for Cesco Plumbing in Becket. RJ said that during that time, the business consisted of Chris and Bill Swindlehurst and one plumber, Ed Mange. “ I was a gopher, and drilled holes while learning about plumbing and heating,” he said. RJ also attended BCC through this time and worked toward getting his degree in Environmental Life Science. RJ’s aspiration was to be an environmental police officer. He took the exam where he placed in the top 250 of the 1500 who took the test. When not chosen in the next 3 years for any of the openings he decided to step back from that and get

into a career that he could rely on, which was the plumbing and heating field. “No matter how young or old, I knew that I could always make money doing this, because there is always a need for tradesmen. RJ explained that he had to work for 3 years as an apprentice with Chris at Cesco before he could take his Journeyman’s test. He gave much credit to Chris and Bill for their help. He attended classes at Taconic (300 hours) to obtain his Journeyman’s license, and then went on to attend NEFI (New England Fuel Institute) at STCC for his Oil Burner’s License. He now has a Master’s License and his SFCSL (Solid Fuel Construction Supervisor’s License for wood, coal, and wood pellet stove installation. He is also certified to do Solar and to work on Buderas oil or gas boilers that are very high-efficiency. He filled me in on how many hours of schooling, apprenticeship, and continuing education that someone who wants to be a plumber has to go through. It is very extensive and all state accredited. The state has pushed for more and more schooling to keep up with all the code changes that take place constantly. RJ stepped out on his own on November 1, 2002. Continued on page 3

City Seeks Proposals for Human Services The City of Pittsfield announced that applications are now available for funding to provide human services to benefit Pittsfield residents. Funding is for the program year July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010. Annually, the City undertakes a process through the Human Services Advisory Council (HSAC), an 11 member volunteer committee which reviews the proposals and submits its recommendations to the Mayor. Last years recommendations resulted in 36 human service programs receiving a total of $450,000 from the City’s general fund and from the federal Community Development Block Grant Program. The consumers assisted with those funds ranged from infants to the elderly.

In addition to submitting a written proposal, applicants will be invited to come before the HSAC to make a presentation in April. HSAC Chairman Christopher Meehan said, “Again we’re looking forward to televising the presentations on Pittsfield Community Television. It provides an excellent opportunity for the public to learn more about the great work that agencies are doing in Pittsfield, and it also allows the citizens to see a part of our process.” Applications can be obtained at the Pittsfield Dept. of Community Development at Pittsfield City Hall. Cantilena Chamber Choir at Berkshire South Regional Community Center The choir will present a concert in collaboration with the Berkshire South Regional Community Center at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 14. It will feature selections from the Magic Tree House: The Musical, based on the popular series of children’s books by Mary Pope Osborne. By special permission from Ms. Pope, the Choir has obtained the rights to perform music from the show, which is currently on a national tour. This will be a premiere performance in Berkshire County. Also on the program is the fairy tale Musicians of Bremen arranged for a cappella choir, and the Never-Ending Song, a Young Person’s Guide to the Choir. Joining the group will be a children’s choir from the Montessori School of the Berkshires.

The Cantilena Chamber Choir is under the artistic direction of Andrea Goodman who is also the Director of the Northern Berkshire Chorale in Williamstown and the Saratoga Choral Festival, an annual summer concert series for chorus and orchestra in Saratoga Springs, New York.
