SYRIA OPERATION

SUMMARY OF ACTIVITES IN 2012

“Two years of instability and conflict in Syria have left the country in an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in its modern history. The UN estimates 70,000 killed, almost one million have fled to neighbouring countries, millions have been internally displaced and around 1/4 of the entire population are in need of humanitarian aid. Islamic Relief (IR) has been providing aid and support to Syrians during these hard times through its field offices and missions in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. In 2012, IR implemented 54humanitarian and relief projects worth more than 10 million GBP. More than 1 million beneficiaries benefited from these projects. This update highlights briefly our humanitarian intervention in 2012. IR would like to thank all donors for their generosity and support. Also, we would like to thank our field staff for their dedication and invaluable work.

The need for privacy equals the need for food After 3 days of travel under the threat of death, Um Sulaiman, 48 years, and her ten childern reached Al Karama IDP camp in Idlib suburbs. During their ever unusual and unexpected journey they experienced miserable conditions. The family fled its home, in Hamah suburbs, seeking a relatively safer shelter somewhere else. For a month, Um Sulaiman and her childern shared tents with other internally displaced families. “We can’t stand life here anymore” said Um Sulaiman “My childern’s dream is to go back to our home in Hamah where their Dad still lives.” To live as an IDP has highlighted to Um Sulaiman and her kids the importance of personal privacy. For a month the family used to sleep at night in shared tents with other IDPs and spend the whole daytime outdoors. “It’s the first time I feel how privacy is needed as much as food” one of the daughters said. page 14

Islamic Relief Mission in Turkey has been working to support IDPs inside Syria since April 2012. Recently, we have established 200 new tents at Al Karama IDP camp. Um Sulaiman and her family were one of the families who benefited from this operation. The family received their own tent, blankets, mattresses and different kits for babies.

Now, Um Sulaiman and her childern can have some sort of privacy needed as much as food. Also, Islamic Relief provided the camp with safe sanitation system including 14 latrines and 14 shower units (divided equally between women and men).

People in the camp still need more support to secure their minimum needs of food, health, hygiene and well beings.
