The Qurbani/Udhiya program was one of the first programs started by Islamic Relief in 1986. It started with only 670 Qurbanis worldwide, and is now one of our largest annual programs with over 150,000 Qurbanis donated globally, benefitting over 3 million people. Over these 30 years, we’ve developed a very efficient, costeffective and reliable process. In the countries we work, the entire Qurbani process from start to finish is regulated to the highest Islamic, ethical and humanitarian standards. On Eid, we ensure your sacrifice is done humanely and hygienically. Meat is then immediately distributed to the most needy, without waste. Your generosity reaches families right here at home in Canada, all around the world, and especially in conflict zones like Yemen and Syria.

Throughdistributed.community-led action, local Imams and scholars, as well as skilled butchers monitor and perform all sacrifices so that everything is in compliance with shariah.
Your Donations in Action
Your Qurbani/Udhiya reaches the hands of those who need it most, providing 2-5 kilograms of meat which feeds a family for a week. This means your donations help families access food, which is sometimes the only meat they can enjoy throughout the year. Selecting Rights-holders
Islamic Relief field teams conduct a needs assessment to identify the most vulnerable communities. This includes orphan sponsorship households, female headed households, households below the national poverty line, conflictstricken households, and the poorest of the poor. We engage in discussions with local communities and agencies to ensure all eligible households are receiving Qurbani and that their needs are taken into account.
Collecting Qurbani Donations
Throughout the blessed 10 days, Islamic Relief Canada collects your Qurbani donations to provide Qurbani/Udhiya and feed the poorest of the poor. We pre-purchase approximately 20% more animals in order to fulfill all incoming requests.
How Funds are Used

Locally Field offices source high quality sheep, goats, cows or buffalo from local farms and traders, which means you are getting the best value for your money, and rights-holders are receiving high quality meat. The entire transportation and logistics network is managed to ensure the animals are treated in the best possible way, and that all meat is handled, packed and distributed with strict hygiene standards in place. We employ veterinarians and health officials to inspect the health and care of the animals, as well as the safety and freshness of the meat before it’s

Story Highlight
This is the reality for Zeynab’s family, “It is very rare that we eat meat. It is not part of our diet because our income does not allow us to have it.”
“Around 6:00am in the morning, I always start walking from the camp to the town which takes almost one hour to reach as I cannot afford to take the bus. I spend most of my time on the streets of Mogadishu and come back home with some money,” Zeynab shared. Still, she only earns $1.50 per day and struggles to make ends meet.
Through Islamic Relief’s Qurbani meat distributions, Zeynab and her family were able to enjoy nutritious meals and meat that lasted them 2 months. Zeynab gratefully stated, “Receiving the meat packs has made us very happy. Buying meat is not an easy task here in the camp, with one kg of meat costing more than $5 which means I would have to save 10 days worth of income to buy meat. We really appreciate the Qurbani you have provided, thank you.”
With more than 6.3 million people across Somalia facing food insecurity throughout the year, meat is a luxury that families can only enjoy during the month of Dhul Hijjah.
For families like Zeynab’s, the thousands of meat packs you have funded act as a lifeline.
Residing in the Alla Amin camp for internally displaced people in Banadir, Somalia, Zeynab is a mother of 4 and the breadwinner of her household. Zeynab takes care of her chronically ill husband, relying on financial support from relatives and donations from the public.

Afghanistan Emergency Earthquake Response Paktika
Climate change has devastated Bangladesh, leaving in its path deadly floods and rising sea levels that are expected to displace 1 in every 7 people in the country by 2050.
The late June flooding was recorded as one of the worst floods in memory, leaving 7.2 million people in urgent need of aid. 94% of Sunamganj and 84% of the surrounding Sylhet district remain submerged, displacing millions of people while destroying critical infrastructure.
In response to the floods in Sunamganj, our team is providing multi-purpose cash grants, repairing latrines, and distributing education materials to support students from the most affected schools.

As part of the Humanitarian Coalition’s Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund, our teams are providing hygiene kits, multipurpose cash grants, shelter repair, and hygiene awareness in the communities of Companiganj, Jointapur, and Goainghat Upazilas in Sylhet.
Compounded by the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that struck southeast Afghanistan on June 22, 2022, the need for aid is heightened more than ever. Our emergency response provides transitional shelter, culturally accepted latrines, and hygiene kits to affected households in the Barmal district of Paktika province.

DHUL HIJJAH IMPACT REPORT 2022 17 Right now, the world stands on the brink of unprecedented famines. 50 million people globally in 46 countries are at imminent risk of famine, experiencing critical hunger, severe levels of food insecurity, and malnutrition. Countless people are already experiencing famine-like conditions in places like Somalia, Kenya, South Sudan, and Ethiopia. Conflict and violence, climate change, and Covid-19, along with compounded economic shocks have left 274 million people in need of humanitarian aid. We are on the ground in every one of these countries, working to deliver aid. As part of the Humanitarian Coalition, donations made to Islamic Relief Canada between June 15 to July 17, 2022 were matched by the Government of Canada. Through our government matching campaign, your impact was doubled and is helping us to reach more children, women and the elderly suffering from extreme hunger. In Somalia and Kenya, government matched funds are already providing 3,000 families with unconditional cash transfers and emergency water trucking. Hundreds of thousands across Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan are receiving food packs, hygiene kits, cash grants, water facilities, training, and awareness campaigns in protection, nutrition, and hygiene.
