Introduction

The Inspire program offers volunteers a chance to visit global projects and partake in fundraising activities, securing the continuity of our initiatives. Over several months, participants refine their fundraising and activity planning skills. The journey peaks with a 9-12 day volunteer trip involving direct collaboration with local communities. Upon their return, Canadian volunteers execute passion projects, using their enhanced skills, and can opt to join Islamic Relief Canada’s regional volunteer teams, furthering leadership development through local initiatives. OUR TRIPS

A Message From Our CEO As 2023 proved to be one of the most challenging years for our community, our Inspire changemakers showed us their resilience and dedication to creating impact for our rights holders all over the world. Creating the opportunity for our young leaders to be confronted with stark realities and stories nourishes the catalyst for change that is at the core of our Inspire program. Each participant has not only been changed by what they’ve observed and learned, but their contributions continue to fuel our mission as an organization. As we reflect on the impact of our initiatives, let’s remember that this work is not merely a duty but a manifestation of our shared values and beliefs. May your selfless service be accepted and reciprocated to continue making a change in the lives of those in need, for generations to come.

Your brother,

Usama Khan, CEO, Islamic Relief Canada

A Message from the Chair of the Board My family and I had the honour of observing one of this year’s Inspire trips to Türkiye. Undoubtedly, it has left a lasting impression on us, prompting regular reflection on our blessings and how we can use them for Allah’s creation. Inspire was more than a trip for us; it was an experience. We saw firsthand the effort and dedication of the Islamic Relief staff, who worked tirelessly to provide the best experience, especially for those the organization aims to serve. We were immersed in an environment that taught us, allowed for reflection, and fostered lifelong bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood. While we experienced much, we learned even more. Interacting with the children, we learned about their fortitude, dignity, and honour and that of their families. If we can incorporate even a fraction of that into our lives and our children’s, inshAllah, we will consider it a success. There was not a single moment on the trip that didn’t lead to reflection, and we hope and pray to be inspired by this experience to better use our time, resources, and blessings in serving Allah SWT and His creation.

Your brother,

Ebad Rahman Ebad Rahman

Board Chair, Islamic Relief Canada

A Message from the Founder of Islamic Relief Inspire could be a spirit, a dream, a vision, an action, or a function. It could be a means of change and a direction. My message to Inspire volunteers is to come here to live the life of the people, to come here to feel how those people live a different life. You see it difficult, they see it differently. You see it as impossible, and they see it as easy. Don’t feel pity for others, rather feel pity for yourself because they live an impossible life with a stronger character. You live an easy life with a much weaker character. They might not have your wisdom, but they have the heart, the mind, and the soul to become a solid individual. You are here to observe the smile on their faces, which comes to you from the depth of their heart. You are here to be emotionally excited and motivated by how much love they can provide you.

her South Africa experience here!

Alhamdulillah, the Inspire Trip to South Africa was a transformative experience for me. After sharing smiles and quality time with orphans and the underprivileged, I realized the importance of learning and appreciating life’s little things. A memorable moment was saying goodbye at Masjid Safiyyatun Hasanah, where children waved with flashlights and sang. Their happy smiles and kindness touched me deeply. I am grateful to Islamic Relief Canada and Islamic Relief South Africa for this amazing opportunity.

Alhamdulillah, we’ve been given the chance to not only make them happy but also understand their story and just feel what they’re feeling. The work Islamic Relief does is needed. It’s needed not only in Canada or South Africa. It’s needed all over the world. We have to remember that we are one big Ummah, and we need to help each other. Reflections

Emir Cica | Islamic Relief Bosnia Country Director

Sanaa Mahmud | Volunteer

I appreciate your longstanding support for the Inspire Project, which has become one of our most successful initiatives! It involves various sectors like education, orphans and child welfare, and advocacy. The project fosters a multi-interactive relationship among local and Canadian volunteers, orphans, academic and Islamic leaders, and project rightsholders. The impact is immeasurable, bringing joy to participating orphans and strengthening community bonds. We look forward to continuing and expanding this impactful project in the future. Thank you for your ongoing commitment.

The Inspire trip was trans- formative, bringing fulfillment and education. Volunteeringabroad changed my perspective towards others and the world. Working with orphans in Bosnia taught me that circumstances don’t define individuals. Despite my initial preconceptions, I left with a deep appreciation for the kids’ intelligence, drive, thoughtfulness, kindness, and creativity. Despite their challenges, they approached each day with smiling faces and eagerness for activities, leaving a lasting impact on me.

Emina Bektic | Volunteer On the last day with the kids, we played a massive game of tag outside the school. It was a beautiful day filled with laughter. After tagging everyone, one of the kids in my group hugged me and said, “Thank you. I hope to be like you one day.” I hugged her back, thanking her, but little did she know, I aspire to be like her one day. These kids are my inspiration, and they will stay close to my heart forever.

Acknowledgement The success of the Inspire 2023 trip to Bosnia is attributable to the unwavering support and contributions from Islamic Relief Bosnia, our accommodation partner Maarif Schools of Sarajevo, the Center for Quran and Sunnah, and Behram-begova Medresa Tuzla.

Amra Hadzic | Islamic Relief Bosnia Staff Over the years, I’ve witnessed numerous projects, and this one stands out remarkably. It’s not just a project; it epitomizes our organization’s core values and vision. Beyond addressing immediate needs, it uniquely focuses on the often-overlooked emotional well-being of children. The project provides a platform for joy, attention, and dedicated time, allowing kids to enjoy their childhood and create lasting memories. It’s not just implemented; it’s felt, lived, and enjoyed—a emarkable synergy of ordinary people doing good.

Psychosocial support for orphans and refugees in Türkiye

Your generous donations support ongoing projects with Islamic Relief Türkiye for orphans and refugee children, aiding their integration into society. Monthly sessions focus on personal development through interaction, discussions, games, and art. Your support provides crucial psychological assistance and connects children and caregivers with psychotherapists when needed. This project significantly contributes to improving orphans’ mental health and social skills. Your continued support is vital in positively impacting these children and caregivers, working towards meaningful goals.

Reflections

Dr. Aarif Pathan | Trip Mentor While we may believe we are benefiting them through sponsorship, Alhamdulillah, what we might not always recognize is the reciprocal benefit to us. Connecting with Syrian, Uyghur and Turkish orphans aligns our hearts with the ummah, reflecting the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and drawing us closer to Allah (SWT). We should desire for these orphans what we want for our children: smiles, care, wiping their tears, alleviating their fears, and ensuring they feel protected and loved.

Sakina Carbide | Volunteer The Inspire project profoundly impacted me in just ten days, awakening my heart and mind in ways a lifetime hadn’t. Experiencing global issues firsthand with those suffering taught me more than I could learn from books or news. The strength and faith of the rights-holders surpassed my own, offering invaluable lessons in patience and resilience. This program inspired me to become a better follower of Allah’s teachings and His decrees for humanity.

‘We presented our findings from Uyghur community consultations to Islamic Relief staff, settlement agencies, and policymakers at an immigration/refugee conference in Calgary. I discussed the trip, shared insights from Uyghur children, and emphasized their remarkable resilience. The Inspire program, especially the passion project, allowed me to leverage knowledge and connections for ongoing advocacy for the Uyghur cause. I am immensely grateful for this opportunity with Islamic Relief Canada, enabling direct contributions to prepare Canada for this initiative.’

‘I’m part of the less than 0.01% globally to complete a marathon, a rare feat. My choice to take on this personal challenge stems from a commitment to empower vulnerable children. Running for the Inspire program allowed me to raise awareness about Syrian and Uyghur refugees, inspiring others. The intense six-month training not only enhanced my physical strength but also built resilience and mental robustness. This cause-driven marathon transformed my life, healing my heart and lifting emotional burdens. From a crestfallen single mother, I emerged fulfilled and empowered. The Inspire program has been transformative, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of it.’

This initiative has significantly advanced access to capacity building, educational support, and food assistance for orphaned children. Your generous donations have supported key aspects of the project, such as packing and distributing food to low-income families. Social programming, a crucial component of the 4-day summer camp, included taking the children shopping for essential items. The project’s impact extended further through school backpack packing and distribution at Miftahul School, setting up a playground for kids, providing mattress and bedding support at Darul Quran School, and offering hygiene and livelihood support for orphans in the Mataram or West Lombok district. These combined efforts contribute to uplifting the lives of disadvantaged children and positively impacting their overall well-being.

Stories from the Ground

Rusnah | Beneficiary of the House Construction Project Rusnah, a 43-year-old woman, heads a household with three daughters. She works as a scavenger, navigating local dumps and villages to collect plastic for sale or anything usable under challenging conditions. Her income, particularly since her husband’s passing eight months ago, is limited, and she struggles to meet her family’s needs. Rusnah is a rights-holder of the Inspire project for home improvement. Previously living in a house unfit for habitation, she also cared for two orphans. After assessment by the Islamic Relief Indonesia team, her living conditions were transformed. Rusnah expressed profound gratitude, stating, “I felt like I was dreaming, something I had never imagined – to get help like this. Now my house is a decent place to live with my children, equipped with proper bedding and a toilet, making life comfortable.” With tears in her eyes, she added, “I am always praying to all those who have helped me receive this assistance, and I believe that only Allah can repay you all.”

Witnessing these children’s challenges heightened my gratitude for my privileges and instilled a sense of purpose and fulfillment. This experience expanded my global outlook, increasing my awareness of international issues and social injustices. The Inspire program provides immense motivation to be the change for the next generation. It is truly eye-opening.

Engaging in Islamic Relief projects and the Inspire program was a transformative experience. The program’s structure was highly motivating, transcending participants’ previous volunteer experiences. The innovative philanthropic approach not only aids those in need but also genuinely inspires every participant. Upon returning to Canada, I am not the same person I was at the journey’s start. I am now filled with a sense of peace, hope for the Ummah, and a renewed, self-inspired drive to do more.

Rabeel Al Kheri | Islamic Relief Pakistan Youth Ambassador

Muhammad Hamza | Volunteer

Islamic Relief is committed to the personal development of young graduates from the Orphan Sponsorship Program. Through the six-month “Power to Youth” program, these graduates engage in life and personal development. In the Inspire Program, workshops are conducted to impart crucial skills such as presentation and communication, enabling proficiency in expressing ideas effectively. These efforts not only enhance personal development but also equip them as capable ambassadors for Islamic Relief, capable of sharing experiences and advocating for the cause. Rabeel Al Kheri, one such ambassador, shared her experience: “I gained a great deal from the workshop. We focused on social action projects, learning how to plan a project, identify milestones, and engage stakeholders. I’m very grateful to Islamic Relief for providing us with ICT equipment, like laptops, tripods, ring lights, and our uniforms.”

Subhan Allah, the trip was really eye-opening. On the outside, they seem like just regular kids, but learning about their struggles really makes you grateful for what you have in life. Everything we are given by Allah SWT, we must give back to the true rights-holders. MashaAllah, the Islamic Relief Pakistan team runs amazing programs to rejuvenate communities. May Allah SWT reward everyone for their kindness and effort.

Dr. Raza Khan | Trip Mentor The Islamic Relief Canada Inspire program, now in its 5th year, is an exceptional initiative producing dynamic young changemakers for future impactful community projects. The dedicated young volunteers I met on this mission are set to become excellent ambassadors for Inspire, carrying lifelong memories and experiences. It has been an honour working with them, and I look forward to continued collaboration on future projects benefiting the rights holders we serve. It is highly recommended for both young and older volunteers.

Thank You for Your Support! Dear Colleagues, Partners, Supporters, and Changemakers, As we conclude another impactful year with the Inspire Program, we express deep gratitude for your unwavering support, which has been pivotal to our success! The 2023 Impact Report for the Inspire Volunteer Abroad Program is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and compassion that have fueled our collective efforts. In 2023, we organized nine transformative trips across six countries, with 169 participants collectively raising over $750,000. These funds have supported noble causes, from psychosocial support for orphans and refugees to aiding vulnerable families on their journey toward a brighter future. Our heartfelt thanks go to the remarkable volunteers who have given their time, energy, and expertise. Your impact is immeasurable, and your dedication is awe-inspiring. Special gratitude extends to Islamic Relief Worldwide and the host field offices for their hospitality and shared commitment to humanitarian endeavours. We commend our incredible Inspire team, whose dedication has been instrumental in bringing our vision to life. Lastly, we express gratitude to the dedicated media staff, videographers, and photographers who joined us on the Inspire trips, documenting every special moment. Looking ahead, our commitment to making a positive impact through the Inspire Volunteer Abroad Program remains steadfast. With your continued support, we are poised to achieve even greater success.
