Project Activities All project activities were designed and implemented in collaboration with community organizations and regional government bodies including the Water and Sanitation Authority and the Pakistan Meteorological Department. This was done to engage various stakeholders and communities to participate in sustainable climate change initiatives.

Outcome #1 Increased access and use of clean, safe water for more than 40,000 community members Prior to this project, many water sources in the area were dried up or not functional. As a result, community members were forced to travel long distances to retrieve water. Some households were spending their limited earnings to buy water on a daily basis. Under this objective, the following activities were achieved:

14 Drinking Water Supply Schemes (DWSS) were constructed Serving more than 30,000 community members • These schemes are providing clean drinking water for targeted communities affected by drought in Quetta and Harnai • The project surpassed its initial target and 9 additional DWSS’s were constructed due to the severity of drought and lack of ground water sources in these communities • 5 of the DWSS’s in Harnai were constructed as solar powered systems • Challenge: one scheme had to be rehabilitated twice due to sustained damage from extreme weather events, particularly after flash floods and heavy rainfall

12 personal protective equipment kits were provided to healthcare facilities Serving more than 500 community members • Kits contained gloves, sanitizer, electronic thermometers, washing liquids, and disinfectant tools

6 ISL AMIC RELIEF CANADA

11 community consultation meetings were conducted • Meetings were carried out to identify vulnerable communities in need of agricultural water support

8 public water stations were constructed in schools, healthcare facilities, and other public areas Serving more than 1,200 community members • 7 water stations were constructed in schools • 1 water station was constructed in a healthcare facility

7 water ponds were constructed Serving more than 100 community members • Over 100 community members have access to the ponds • These ponds are helping farmers store water, enhancing their crop yields

7 agricultural irrigation channels were constructed Serving more than 2,000 community members • Each channel is 1,000 feet long and is irrigating more than 86 acres of land in the targeted communities • Communities are using these irrigation channels for their crops and vegetables, and livestock rearing

5 water storage reservoirs were established Serving more than 2,500 community members and their livestock including sheep, camels, and goats • Reservoirs not only store flood water for use by community members but also control flash floods, and are being used for irrigation purposes

Outcome #2 Improved food security for more than 8,000 community members. Under this objective, the following activities were completed 100 farmers in Harnai were provided with approximately 200 hours of laser land levelling to increase their farm yields Serving more than 270 community members • This process has helped farmers utilize scarce ground water to cultivate their land for agricultural purposes

100 female headed households were provided with poultry birds Serving more than 270 community members • Each household was provided with one rooster, 9 chickens, 50 kg of poultry feed, portable cages and medicine

100 small-scale agricultural farmers were provided with drought resilient seeds Serving more than 1,400 community members • Seeds that were distributed included 50 kg of barley and wheat, and 10 kg of cumin for each farmer

100 kitchen gardens were installed for women in both Quetta and Harnai Serving more than 850 community members • The purpose of this intervention was to increase the availability of nutritious vegetables and to diversify food sources in the region • From June – November 2021, training sessions were held to teach community members about gardening techniques • Community members received gardening tool kits containing a shovel, pick axe, spade, water sprinkler, and a garden rack • Kitchen gardens were equipped with a 120 ft iron fence to protect the gardens from animals in the area

20 animal health vaccination camps were run Serving more than 4,200 community members • This was done to reduce the incidence of communicable diseases and increase livestock yields • Over 18,000 sheep and more than 11,000 small animals, such as goats, were vaccinated against various diseases • Vaccination camps were established in five villages in the Quetta District: Killi Babozai, Randozai, Killi Sardar Karez, Shadini, Mian Khan Zai and Killi Muhammad Khan

8 ISL AMIC RELIEF CANADA

10 agricultural management skills training sessions were conducted Served more than 250 community members • Community members were trained on farming techniques, and taught about drip irrigation systems, green tunnels, land leveling, and proper use of fertilizers

8 green tunnels were constructed Serving more than 100 community members • These tunnels have been helping communities grow off-season vegetables • Community members now have vegetables to fulfill their daily food needs, and they are also able to sell them to generate an income

8 biogas technology plants were installed Serving more than 250 community members • This was done so that farmers can turn waste from livestock into sustainable energy for other purposes such as gas for cooking

7 drip irrigation systems were installed in farming households Serving more than 100 community members • This cost-effective solution has reduced water wastage and improved farm production

6 communal animal shades were constructed Serving approximately 100 community members • Shades have been constructed to protect livestock from harsh weather conditions and wild animals

Challenges Monsoon rainfalls and flash floods During this project, our field office in Pakistan was responding to the devastating floods in the country that affected both Quetta and Harnai districts. The prolonged rainfall and flooding severely impacted the speed at which our team was able to implement project activities. During this time, work on construction sites was closed as vendors and staff members were unable to access project sites. However, our team continually reassessed the situation and conducted multiple field visits.

Earthquake On October 7, 2021 a disastrous earthquake hit Harnai resulting in a temporary pause in project implementation as our team was affected. Some of our team member’s houses were also severely damaged. Despite this, our team pivoted to focus on immediate earthquake relief efforts in the region. When it was deemed safe, the team picked up on this project’s activities.

High inflation The price of goods and services went up during project implementation. This required our team to re-evaluate the project budget twice. However, Islamic Relief Pakistan was able to surpass our original target of supporting 16,800 people and now reach 55,491 people, a 230% increase.

Case Studies Habib Khan 52 years old resident of Killi Randozai Union Council Kuchlak in District Quetta

“I have 5 off springs. 3 sons and 2 daughters. Professionally I am a farmer. We depend on agriculture. We get water from tube wells and water supply tanks. Our water supply tank is expired and has a leakage. The water supply tank was constructed in 1830. As a result, the community faces many issues around access to water.” In response, Islamic Relief created a 1,000 ft long water channel structure. Now the water goes through a proper channel, isn’t wasted through prior leakage issues, and properly stores water nearby for farmland. Families like Habib’s now get a good amount of wheat, onion, tomato, and other produce that they sell in the market and earn a livelihood through. “This water channel has facilitated us in every walk of life and supported us in our agriculture field. We store the water of three tube wells and every farmer is able to water their fields. We are very thankful to Islamic Relief Pakistan and the donors who have supported this project for providing us this new water structure. It’s resolved so many of the community’s issues and is helping us to make a living through agriculture.”

Bibi Basra 62 years old resident of Killi Bahadurabad UC Nakus in District Harnai

“There are 13 members in our family. They include 3 of my sons, 3 daughter in laws, 5 grandsons, and 2 granddaughters. One of my grandsons is 8 years old and has a disability. I am a housewife and manage all of the household chores. This project has remarkably impacted our lives, personally improving mine drastically. Before the installation of the kitchen garden, I spent a huge amount of time outside tending to my vegetable patch. Now with the kitchen gardens, I grow more fresh and healthy vege tables at home. The training and tools I received have made my life easier, allowing me to wholeheartedly focus on my passion. I no longer buy produce from the markets, everything is grown naturally at home! This has helped my family save so much money. We can now spend this on other necessities. This has definitely changed my life for the better.”
