WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE PROJECTS | IMPACT REPORT 2021
1
The Widespread Need Access to clean water is considered a basic right and yet more than 660 million people live without safe water and over 2 billion people do not have access to adequate sanitation. Millions of people within rural communities are constantly at risk of waterborne diseases, like cholera and dengue fever, as a result of inadequate access to water. Water and sanitation related diseases remain the leading cause of death for children under the age of five.
2
Women and girls are especially affected by water crises, as they walk for hours at a time to collect dirty water. This detracts from the time they could use to attend school and limits their availability to support themselves. Additionally, water sustains crops and livestock, which are a major source of income for many communities Islamic Relief Canada works in. Without water, pastoral families lose their livelihood, as well as their food security.

Our Approach The demand for water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) assistance has increased significantly with rapid population growth, urbanization, conflict, and frequent natural disasters. Whether assistance is for emergency relief or long-term development, WASH is an essential component of our work. It encompasses various forms of assistance, such as providing safe drinking water, distributing hygiene kits, building gendersensitive latrines and toilets as well as improving hygiene awareness and practices.
Due to the generous contributions of donors like you, Islamic Relief Canada has been able to operate in various countries across multiple regions to increase access to clean water and improve the quality of life for hundreds of thousands of people. When conducting water projects, Islamic Relief choses a holistic approach that combines clean water services with better food sustainability and income opportunities. Through skills training and improving hygiene awareness and practices, Islamic Relief equips the community to overcome barriers and be resilient to the effects of climate change.

Improving Access to Water & Sanitation in Sherpur
This emergency response aims to support thousands of vulnerable internally displaced people, returnees and host communities across the Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. This project establishes community protection mechanisms, with a focus on genderbased violence and child protection. We are working to install clean water systems, handwashing points and latrines and distributing water storage, hygiene items, and dignity kits. We are also working to train community volunteers on menstrual hygiene management awareness.
This project is focused on enhancing economic empowerment and livelihood opportunities for vulnerable families, particularly orphan and female-led households. Islamic Relief is providing families with support based on their needs and skill set; this will include greenhouse, livestock, poultry, and water wells. This is helping families meet their food/ nutrition needs and provide longterm benefits such as surplus production.
This project seeks to improve access to WASH services for families in Jamalpur and Sunamgonj districts in Bangladesh. This includes constructing 200 shallow tube wells, 50 deep tube wells, and 250 household latrines. The project will also train community members on maintenance, and conduct hygiene awareness sessions. There is a special focus on the active participation of the local community, and especially women as they play the main role in water collection and usage for their families.
Recognizing the inadequate water and sanitation options within schools and communities of Sherpur, this response tackles these concerns through two projects. We are building multiple solar-driven water distribution systems for the community, which reduces water collection time for women and girls who usually collect water. Additionally, we are building 10 water, sanitation and hygiene blocks for school children. This increases accessibility to education and ensures children are able to learn in a safe environment.

YEMEN WASH, Food Security and Livelihood
This response aims to reduce suffering while maintaining the human dignity of internally displaced people in Al Dhale’e and Dhamar. It focuses on rehabilitating 4 water systems to improve long-term access to clean drinking water. One way this is being achieved is by upgrading water systems to solar powered versions in order to minimize negative environmental impacts and ensure a long-term power source. We are also extending the water piping system to ensure accessibility of water stations by making them close to houses, with adequate privacy and lighting.
We further emphasize the importance of minimizing environmental impacts through cleaning campaigns and waste management awareness sessions in an attempt to reduce pollution. Hygiene kits that include chlorine tablets, soap bars for hand washing, washing powder and water containers, are being distributed. In order to meet food and essential living needs, Islamic Relief is providing unconditional cash assistance to internally displaced persons and host communities. Families are also being granted cashfor-work opportunities to construct and repair community assets such as ponds, rural roads and harvesting tanks. This project focuses in particular on femaleheaded households and people with special needs, as we recognize the barriers they face to accessing safe water and employment opportunities. BENEFICIARIES
